Wild and crazy alternative:

       Have a small computer for text processing and hire someone
       to network the two systems.  Thus, a PDP 11 or small VAX
       can be used for real text editing thus improving overall
       productivity by several orders of magnitude and the network
       can be used to transfer files, "submit jobs", etc.

       This technique has been used, more or less successfully,
       for years and years.  See PWB Unix (Programmer's Workbench
       UNIX) for a late example of this.
