I have a minor comment about extensibility.

One of the great virtues of an Emacs or a Unix is that however horrid
the interface might be (and I'm not saying Emacs is particularly bad)
the user can change it.  In Emacs s/he can change the definitions
that go with the keys, in Unix one simple thing is to alias user
defined names to the non-mnemonic names (like cat or ls).
Unfortunately there is a major problem when one does this and that is
when one goes to *another* computer that uses the same system or uses
a *different* account on the same computer.  In these cases your
customized init file is not read in.  I then have recover from the
errors I get from my largely automatic behavior and try to recall
what the "Standard" is.  This is so confusing for me that I do not
use the extensible features of these systems.
