I believe that some of you editor-people will be interested in the the
following thesis proposal, just released as a Technical Report here at
the University of Washington.

                   Technical Report No. 81-11-01

                           November, 1981

Abstract

The Eden system will support an object-oriented methodology on an
integrated local network of nodes, each offering a high-resolution bit
map display, a keyboard, and a graphical pointing device.  This report
outlines a user interface design for the Eden system that allows all
objects to be examined, created, destroyed, and modified by means of a
single mechanism.  This design, based on a hierarchy of
syntax-directed, generalized editors, makes editing the basic paradigm
for human interaction with the system; that is, all interactions with
the system are treated as the editing of objects.
