Unix Emacs has supported a subjob control feature for quite a while,
substantially longer than the VMS version -- which is just Unix Emacs
running under a compatibility package.  It's implementation was
prompted by Multics Emacs.  One of the advantages of the Unix
implementation over the Multics one is the ability to have multiple
processes under the same Emacs.  I typically run with lisp in one
window, a shell [the command interpreter] in another, a file being
edited in another, and a continuously updating SYSTAT in the mode line.
