UNIX TECO; portable FORTRAN editors
>From menlo70!hao!woods@Berkeley Thu Oct 29 08:19:21 1981
We here at HAO (High Altitude Observatory) have both of these beasts,
although I have never used the TECO and those that have say it is a rather
primitive version.
Our portable FORTRAN editor is called ABE (A Better Editor). It is implemented
here under v6 UNIX, and has been ported to a VAX 11/780 running VMS (and
possibly other places that I don't know about).
Personally, I prefer to use vi, since vi is faster and requires fewer
keystrokes, however, abe does have some advantages, particularly a much fancier
pattern matching scheme, and the ability to repeat a command an arbitrary
number of times without having to type "." that many times.
Also, abe creates a backup file upon exit, so that your old version can easily
be recovered if necessary. Abe requires that the host computer have the
capability to echo characters back as they are typed in, and also requires
a file for each different terminal type on the system, which contains the octal
codes for the characters that clear screen, clear to end-of-line, etc.
(termcap was not available at the time abe was written).
