Although discussion of personal workstations is relevant to the discussion
of editors, it is hard for me to imagine having a LISP machine available to
each of the ~4000 LOTS kids, or better yet to each of the ~20000 Stanford
students and faculty who may want to use an editor to write a term paper or
journal article.  I care about the editor technology implied by or possible
on a LISP machine only insofar as it represents experiments that in 10
years will be reflected in the personal computers available to every
student or secretary.  Meanwhile, my sights are lower:  I want the best
editor technology that can be offered to the masses in 1984.

Seriously, the question of how much computer you need to have an acceptable
editing environment is an important on</PRE>
