Lorenz et al on militarism
Think about it:  If self-preservation is really the reason for the
arms race, then why are we scared?  I don't feel that it's preserving
   my safety...

If saving lives is really the reason for intensive effort in agriculture
research, then why are people still dying of starvation in the third world?

Because even though we are trying as hard as we can, we are still only
partially successful.  I would not abandon agricultural research just
because it has not yet solved all the world's problems; if we stopped
the research, things would be even worse.

I am not saying that I am a fan of the arms race; I am just saying that
your conclusion, right or wrong, was not derived by a logical argument.
