The question posed by Upstill, "is the Soviet Union the monolithic,
intractable menace it is popularly imagined to be?", rolls up a straw man with
a real, useful question.  Whether or not the SU is "monolithic" is only
secondary to the main issue, that is whether it is indeed "intractable", i.e.
refractory to efforts to discuss mutual non-annihilation rationally.  Let's be
careful of these red herrings; some remarks on this list are already fishy
enough!
