The Fidonews at a Glance
This week the number of contributions was zero! Not one single article
has been sent in. I hope you forgive this editor if he finds it
difficult to find the inspiration for writing an editorial...
All I can offer, beside Carols Japanese Kitchen, where she's
cooking "Japanese Stuffed Squid" and a joke from Ol'Wdb "to keep
handy" as he expressed it, called "Tithing" plus the ninth episode of
"Bastard Operator From Hell", is a text, that I saved from a Fidonet
Echo, and that I think deserves a better destiny than just to be
ignored by the handful of remaining writers in the echo, that seem to
be completely occupied by bashing each other. It's a text about
"Netiquette: Replying to messages" from as far away as South Africa.

HOW TO REPLY TO MESSAGES - SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR NETIQETTE
By: Stephen Hayes, 5:7106/20
Khanya BBS, Pretoria, South Africa
With the growth of the Internet, there are many newcomers to
electronic communications, who are unfamiliar with the culture and
etiquette (called netiquette) of electronic messaging.
One of the things that often causes problems for newcomers (newbies)
is replying to messages.
Here is the way most experienced users reply to messages in
"many-to-many" electronic forums -- Usenet newsgroups, BBS con-
ferences, and e-mail mailing lists. Some forums are available in all
three formats, and are gated from one to the other.
You read these messages with a "Reader", which may be a mail reader, a
newsreader, an offline reader, or it may be called a "message editor".
Each of these has different ways of doing things, but when you reply
to a message you should get a copy of the message with the original
text preceded by a "greater than" sign, like this:
> Can anyone help me? I am looking for a widget
> produced by the XYZ manufacturing company. Are
> they still in business.
Some readers, especially BBS ones, will put the initials of the sender
of the original message before the "greater than" sign. So if the
sender was John Smith, the quoted text will appear like this:
JS> Can anyone help me? I am looking for a widget
JS> produced by the XYZ manufacturing company. Are
JS> they still in business.
Most readers will display such text in a different colour, so it is
easy to see who wrote what. This process is usually called "reply
quoting".
When displaying the quoted text your message editor should also put
the cursor at the top of the quoted text.
What you do next is the important part.
If the quoted text consists of several paragraphs, scroll down through
it and delete the parts you are NOT replying to. If you delete several
paragraphs that are significant for the argument, it is polite to put
<SNIP>
FIDONEWS 19-11 Page 4 18 Mar 2002
on a line on its own, separated by spaces, to show that you are not
ignoring the argument.
When you reach a paragraph to which you want to make a specific reply,
leave a BLANK LINE after the quoted paragraph, and begin your reply
there.
If you do not leave a blank line, and if you do not use the "greater
than" sign to mark quoted test, many message readers will not be able
to distinguish between the various parts of the message. If you want
to *communicate*, and get useful replies to messages, follow these
guidelines to make it easy for those who read your messages. If you
make it easier, you are more likely to get constructive and useful
replies.
-- Example begins --
> Can anyone help me? I am looking for a widget
> produced by the XYZ manufacturing company. Are
> they still in business.
The XYZ company went bankrupt in 1623, but their products are still
stocked by the QRM Company whose e-mail address is
[email protected].
-- Example ends --
Note that the answer to the question should follow the question.
Putting the answer before the question is called "top posting", and is
bad manners (bad netiquette).
If you reply in the manner shown above, it is easy for anyone reading
the message to see what the question is, and what question the answer
is supposed to be answering.
That will make it easy someone who didn't see the original question,
but who has more information on the topic, to contribute more
information.
-- Example begins --
>> Can anyone help me? I am looking for a widget
>> produced by the XYZ manufacturing company. Are
>> they still in business.
> The XYZ company went bankrupt in 1623, but their products
> are still stocked by the QRM Company whose e-mail address is
>
[email protected].
I have had better service from the DQX Company, who not only
distribute and service the Widgets, but are also developing
a better product, which will be called a Super-widget. Contact
them at
[email protected].
-- Example ends --
FIDONEWS 19-11 Page 5 18 Mar 2002
Top posting separates these elements, sometimes with a lot of
irrelevant material in between, which makes it much harder to follow
the thread of the discussion.
If you separate the parts with a lot of irrelevant text, as top-
posting does, you will just annoy readers, and their attention will be
more on the bad formatting of your message than on its content, and so
you are less likely to get useful replies.
Some general guidelines for posting and replying
When you post a message or reply to one in a "many-to-many" electronic
forum, whether it is a newsgroup, an e-mail mailing list or a BBS
conference (echo), the following guidelines are not only good
netiquette, but will make communication easier.
1) Make sure that MIME encoding and HTML are switched off in
your message reader/editor.
2) Snip all parts of the message that you are not replying to.
Some message readers/editors can be set to warn you if
quoted text is more than a certain percentage of your rep-
ly. If the quoted text is more than 70% of your reply, you
probably need to snip more. If you quote a 500-line message
and just write "I agree" or "Rubbish", you will annoy other
users, whether you put your comment at the beginning or the
end. If you quote a 500 line message, you should write at
least 200 lines in your reply, or else snip the original
message. If you are writing a one line reply, you should
quote no more than about 8-10 lines of the original, and
your comments should generally FOLLOW, not precede, the
quoted text.
3) If you are replying to a message that has several questions
or components, reply to each one immediately after the
quoted question or text, so that others can see what it is
you are replying to.
Why do so many newbies practise "top posting"?
When the Internet began, it linked mainly government, military and
academic computers. The software used was designed for the purpose,
and developed for the kind of communication that was used.
In the late 1980s, BBSs were developed, and generally followed, and in
some respects improved upon the Internet and Usenet model. Newsgroups
and BBS conferences, in particular, were designed for "many-to-many"
communication right from the start.
In the 1990s the Internet began to go commercial, and many companies
that produced office automation software tried to adapt that software
to the Internet. In doing this they often produced clumsy kludges and
workarounds. Office messaging software was designed for interoffice
memos, which were "one-to-many", not "many-to-many" communication. The
programs were designed for a hierarchical top-down environment, in
which managers sent memos to their underlings, and the underlings were
not expected to answer back.
FIDONEWS 19-11 Page 6 18 Mar 2002
Many of these programs could not do reply quoting at all (da Vinci,
early versions of WordPerfect Office). When people using these
programs in offices began using the Internet, they were often flamed
because they ignored netiquette, because of the shortcomings of their
programs. Those who produced these programs added the kludges and
workarounds, but they are still designed *primarily* to work in an
office environment. The default settings of programs like Microsoft
Outlook and Groupwise have the office environment in mind, with the
boss-underling memo culture. But this culture is regarded as rude in
the Internet and Usenet and BBS messaging environment.
If you use an office automation product to connect to Usenet,
therefore, check the settings to make sure they work best in the
Usenet environment - no MIME, no HTML, no top posting, reply quoting
with the standard "greater-than" sign at the beginning of the line.

electronic comunications. Comments and suggestions for improvements
are welcome. Last updated: 8 March 2002

Japanese Stuffed Squid
2 lg Squid, 6 inch cavity
1 lb Shrimp, shelled and chopped
2 c Bread crumbs or rice
1 c Chopped cabbage
1 c Choped leeks or green onion
1/3 c Fish sauce (Patis)
1 ts Poppy seeds
Ok, lots of variation here! You mix all but the breadcrumbs and
squid into a mess then add breadcrumbs til it's holding together.
Optional, add an egg at this stage. Stuff the squid with it then deep
fry the whole thing to a delicate brown. Drain over lots of paper
towels and eat cold in slices over rice or warm it in the microwave.

BASTARD OPERATOR FROM HELL #9
I'm driving to work and I'm stuck behind this old guy, the classic
slow driver from hell, whose car red-lines at 20 mph and can't take
corners at more than 5. I honk my horn but his hearing aid's probably
turned way down to "whisper", so I'm stuck.
I make a mental note of his license plate. In fact, I did that 60
times a minute for 15 and a half minutes. Oh dear.. oh dear.... Looks
like another call to the DMV Database to register a vehicle as stolen
by out of town arms dealers...
I get to work, flick the excuse page over. "ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION
FROM SATTELLITE DEBRIS". Fair enough, it looks like it's going to be
a good day.
I log into "FUCKYOU", (the help-desk enquiries username) and go into
mail. There's 3 new messages, the first of which is 117 lines long, so
it's obviously a storyteller. Shit, I hate that. Instead of saying
"My account needs more disk space" they tell you about how they're
doing this bit of research for a lecturer and how it's got to be in
yesterday, and they almost had it but their second cousing twice
removed had a perforated herpes scab and lost a lot of blood and had
to be rushed into hospital... etc etc. I delete the message.
Second message I read, but it's one of those people who can't handle
the mail interface and send a null message, so all you get is headers.
I reply to the message saying "No worries, we can do that by next
tuesday". Hope it was important.
The last message I leave for tommorrow, because Saturday would be a
dull day if I ever had to work then.
The phone rings. I thought I'd fixed that!
I put it on hands free so I can slop some pizza into the microwave.
"Yes" I call
"Something's wrong with my Boot disk, I can't login to the server"
"Have you got your disk with you?"
"Sure!"
I go get the disk and put it and the pizza in for 5 minutes on
"ULTRA-NUKE".
Six minutes later, he rings back.
"It still doesn't work, and now my disk makes a funny noise and
smells."
FIDONEWS 19-11 Page 9 18 Mar 2002
"OH SHIT! It's that electromagnetic radiation from satellite debris
again!"
"Really? I think I heard about that!" (What a tool!)
"Yep, I'm sorry, you'll have to buy another disk"
"Oh, that's ok, I don't mind, the old one was getting worn. Thanks"
"Sure, no worries. And be sure to run it through our virus checker
FDISK when you get a lot of important data on it..."
"I will! Thanks!"
"That's Ok - it's my job!"
Xcbzone is running really slow so I kill off a whole lot of database
backends that seem to be hogging all the cpu and get back into my
game. Much better.
It isn't easy on the frontline, work work work...
I go to the cafeteria for a quick 2 hour snack - they're so nice to me
there. They always have been, ever since that computer glitch that
registered their kitchen as an organ recipient - very messy. I grab a
couple of cans of coke and some cheese things and cruise on back to
the office via the first year computer funamentals lab. I look in the
window on the scene that unfolds it- self to me - a lab full of first
years with no demonstrator.
WELL I'LL JUST HAVE TO HELP!
I walk on in.
"Right, I'm your temporary replacement demonstrator and today we're
going to put our assignments aside for half an hour to learn about the
REMARK function, or, as it's known to the computer literate world,
rm.."
I should have been a teacher you know - I've got this way with
people... ...

Tithing
By: Warren Bonner
<

Every Sunday, a little old lady placed $2,000 in the collection plate.
This went on for weeks until the priest, overcome by curiosity,
approached her.
"Sister, I couldn't help but notice that you put $2,000 a week in the
collection plate," he stated.
FIDONEWS 19-11 Page 10 18 Mar 2002
"Why yes," she replied, "every week my son sends me money, and I give
a share to the church."
"That's wonderful, how much does he send you?"
"Oh, $20,000 a week."
"Your son is very successful, what does he do for a living?"
"He is a veterinarian," she answered.
"That is a very honorable profession. Where does he practice?"
"Well, he has one cat house in Las Vegas and another in Reno."

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
