A return to Fidonet?
By Louie Gonsalves,
[email protected]
I am an ex-Fidonet sysop. I came to FidoNet circa 1993 as a user,
became a sysop around late 1994, and by mid-1998 had pulled the plug,
for various reasons. One of those reasons was personal, real-life
stuff, another was the local net I headed in North Dakota pretty much
disintegrated after the Flood of 1997. Wiped out. Gone.
Yet here I am. It's late 2001, almost eight years after I got my
first node number, four years after I called it quits, and I am
considering getting back IN.
Why? Simple. I miss it. I miss echomail, I miss running a BBS.
Headaches and all =o)
I do have a pile of questions. I've been out of the loop for four
years. I've read the back issues of the Snooze, but nothing's
clearer.
1. To be fido these days.. telephone number needed, or is
tcp/ip enough? Or more accurately: Is a tcp/ip name
sufficent to be nodelisted?
2. The old geographical limitations still in place? IE,
could I get a nodenumber from another net, should the NC
responsible for this area be unresponsive? (NOTE: I haven't
contacted him, so I don't know. It's just a question.)
Then again, I do question my sanity. I see P4 is *still* the Policy
in effect. *sigh*. I see the Nodelist has shrunk to levels that I
had never seen. Of course, this could be argued to be a good thing,
meaning all the deadwood's gone and those that remain do so 'cause
they enjoy Fido. Right?
I actually intend to put up a real BBS. Telnet-and-www-only for now.
I may add dialup. But primarily, I'm doing this for myself. I do
miss FidoNet. Reading most of the old snooze issues (yes, from #1
till present) brought back memories, and gave perspective.
Kind regards,
Louie Gonsalves, ex-1:285/59, ex-1:2808/0

Failed End Run
By Andrea Santos
[email protected]
As the turf wars continue, CAB is, again, perturbed with the Zone 1
Coordinator for alleged nodelist misdeeds, emploring like-minded
sysops throughout the Zone to stand up and be heard.
Lest CAB be reminded, he had an obligation, per Policy 4, to inform
the Z1C of a pending election and he also was obliged to notify the
Z1C of the Region's results, not simply insert the new RC 12 in the
nodelist, with instructions to list whoever was found sufficiently
amusing.
Further, the Z1C has NO OBLIGATION to accept the results of that RC
"election" or any other. It's a long held courtesy that the will of
the Region be granted, but it's not guaranteed, particularly when the
departing and incoming RCs opt to play hijinks with their Regional
segment and list person(s) already listed elsewhere, when there is no
technical reason to do so.
If Mr. Ross has a *need* to be listed in Region 12, I can't imagine
why the Z1C wouldn't grant the request, if asked. Course, that would
also necessitate that Mr. Ross be removed from the Region 18 segment.
After all, there can be no technical reason why Mr. Ross requires
listings in two Regions.
The nodelist is an address book not a political toy for the whims of
perpetually disgruntled nodes. Choose not to recognize that and the
*C above will do it for you as has been done!
Scorecard reads: Z1C 7 - CAB/DEE 0.

Moving Forward for Policy Change
By Frank Vest
1:1/23
Last week, this Editor wrote a Netmail to all the RCs in Fidonet. The
Netmail proposed a change to Policy 4 regarding the Netmail address
for the Fidonews Editor. The current Policy states that the Fidonews
Editor is at 1:1/1. As most know, the Editor is currently at 1:1/23.
There have been very few responses to that Netmail. Of those
responses, the general thought seems to be `Change the Editor's
address to match P4'. IOW, the Fidonews Editor becomes 1:1/1 and the
problem is solved. This is one way to do it. Please read on.
If that is what is decided, so be it.
This Editor doesn't see that as a remedy. Policy 4 has been stated as
"not current", "out of date", "not with the times", "out of touch" and
dozens of other things. Changing an address to match P4 is admitting
that P4 is "with" the times and Fidonet is "out of touch".
One reply offered support and voiced a concern regarding how the
change was worded by this Editor. The concern was that the portion
"Contributions are submitted to the Node listed in the Zone section of
the current Fidonet Nodelist as Fidonews Editor". The point was made
that there are 6 Zone sections in the Fidonet Nodelist.
This editor understands this concern and did not consider that fact
in the writing. Another reason that several heads are better than one.
:)
The wording can be changed. This Editor would like to see the
Fidonews Editor listed in the Zone that s/he resides in. What is
important, however, is that the RCs come together to act on the
proposal.
Another reply felt that this was a trivial matter and that there were
other things in P4 that are more important.
This Editor agrees with that. This Editor also believes that before
one can walk, one must take a first step. Fidonet, like the Internet
and most other new babies, started on its back in a crib... nurtured
by a "father and mother" figure. Both finally rolled over and learned
to crawl. Both took that first step and then walked into the world.
Both finally began to run. Both have fallen many times.
The difference??
The Internet got back up every time and started again.... learned
what went wrong and fixed it. Fidonet went back to crawling and is
still crawling along with eyes that wonder at the big Internet that
FIDONEWS 18-51 Page 6 17 Dec 2001
runs so fast and is so big.
Now.... The Internet was slow starting. Fidonet was running before
the Internet crawled. Fidonet was bigger than the Internet. What
happened?? To this Editor, that is simple. When Fidonet fell, it
stopped trying. Fidonet lays there crying and begging for some food.
All the while, losing weight and starving. :'(
Does Fidonet need your sympathy?
NO.
Does P4 need your sympathy?
NO.
Both need your help!
Ladies and gentlemen of Fidonet. We must take that first step again.
Policy has undergone change in the past. Each, in my opinion, was an
attempt to document and update what was being done, how it was done
and give some form of guide to Fidonet. Fidonet must do this again or
face the end of Fidonet.
It has been said that P4 can not be changed. I disagree.
P4 has been changed. The current is P4.07. That, in and of itself,
indicates that there was a P4.00. Even if that is not enough, P4 in
itself gives a method for change. The problem is that Fidonet seems
perfectly happy to crawl along and cry for it's milk.... or lay there
and die. It's simply easier to sit back and cry that P4 can't be
changed because it is too hard. It's easier to blame the Internet. The
easiest is to blame each other. Simply say "It's their fault!" "They
did it!!" "Daddy!!" "That bad P4 hurt me!".
How to change P4??
It won't happen by crying "That bad P4 hurt me!".
Section 8 of P4 tells how to make a change. The RCs make a referenda
to the IC who takes it to the *Cs in general for a vote.
How hard is this to understand??
The RCs are asked to make a change. A group or person can ask them.
Provide good reason(s) for the change. Remember that your Net, Region
or Zone is not the only one in Fidonet. Give GOOD reasons.
Alternately, the RCs can initiate a change. They see a part of Policy
that needs updated and then bring that to the IC. This can only happen
if the RCs pay attention to their job and find out what is being done
in Fidonet that works and what technical changes are happening. Then
take this to the IC with the proposed changes for a vote of the *C
structure. That is what the *Cs are for.
This Editor is encouraged by the response received. There is interest
FIDONEWS 18-51 Page 7 17 Dec 2001
and that is important.
Ok, this Editor has rambled enough. The effort has been made. If this
effort fails, so be it. I'll go on with the knowledge that I tried.
Can you, or will you be able to say the same???
Thanks to all and best wishes to Fidonet,
Frank Vest - Editor, Fidonews

COORDINATORS
[email protected]
Dear readers, I am sorry to report the battle rages on between the
"haves and have-nots". A better description may be, "the coordinators
and the Un-coordinators". As you are aware of the discomfiture and
friction between some regional coordinators, among themselves and the
zone one coordinator, the pot finally boiled over. For some time the
"Ol'Codger" has pleaded for fido friends to close ranks and come
together to no avail. Policy4 has become the root of most dissension.
There are those that speak of starting their own nets, others speak of
starting their own nodelists. The un-cooperators are in the process
of trying to Hi-jack fidonet. I have an idea, let's try the last
resort, prayer! It may not work, but it couldn't hurt. Yes a miracle
is needed, NOW.
The nodes that already have an exception to reside in a geographical
location other than their own, have received permission by their *C's
to do so, with the understanding that it is revoke if it causes any
problem. Some of these are very necessary as they would not be in
Fidonet were it not permitted. Some are not necessary at all.
My own net 103 had a horrendous fight with ex-RC Kohl over nodes in
net 102 that had to call long distance from cities along the Orange/LA
Counties border where they resided, to get a connection with their
assigned NEC. The nodes NC's and the previous R10C Dave Garrett had
approved their exceptions as they were local calls to net 103NEC
Fidonet lost eight nodes on Kohl's orders for them to return to his
net 102. Had we not complied with his order, he threatened that net
103 would be removed from the nodelist. I have another idea, lets all
try to accommodate and cooperate with each other without politics.
Reducing the egos to one on one, all of you would see each other in a
new light. Just for a moment, imagine you were isolated in the whole
world from anyone you know. Now your perceived "enemy" sysop is
suddenly the only person in your world... the only one to talk to, the
only one that may help you when you need help... suddenly it is not
all about you being more wealthy, more educated, more savvy... Just
take a moment to think about it... does the "Golden Rule" seem wise?
Back to the root of the dissension a moment. We really need to set
some committee in place to find a way to correct the problems that
Policy4 seems inadequate to handle. I suggested this three years ago
in the above mentioned fido-fray. For us to fly full blast ahead into
the storm of complaints and pleas for exceptions in the face of
evolving technology is as asinine as trying to play a CD on a
phonograph.
With that I put my Ouija Board back in the closet and close the idea
department for this week.

Recieved this in E-Mail. Thought I'd share it with all of you.
- Frank
Letter to the Editor
From: Luke Kolin (formerly 1:250/714)
Sir:
It was with some surprise that I was able to read through the Snooze
the past two weeks and see that the more things change, the more they
stay the same. Having been a Canadian job exile for approaching four
years, I've developed a keen appreciation and curiosity for Southern
attitudes. I have been somewhat privileged to observe some of this by
virtue of the fact that while I am a northerner, I am NOT a Yankee - a
subspecies that in these parts seems to rank marginally above Hillary
Clinton and members of the Taliban.
At present, I am placing a bet with myself if Charles' and Andrea's
blatherings will continue on in FidoNet as long as discussions here
about the War of Northern Agression. These finally seem to be
simmering down, although the recent Florida recount debacle has
resurrected the fratricidal arguments about the great Hayes-Tilden
election swindle of 1876. I hear brothers have stopped speaking to
brothers again.
I'm also delighted to hear that one of my old friends in FidoNet has
been following in my footsteps by being summarilly dismissed as RC12.
I'm not sure if Lesley-Dee has lasted the six months that I did, but
it's every man's dream to see his protege follow in his footsteps,
only faster and better than him.
When faced with the depressing thought of turning 30 in just over a
year, it was comforting to see that in FidoNet at least, very little
has changed since 1994. Old battles are being refought with many of
the same participants as if the preceeding years simply did not exist.
Perhaps they have not - the 1998 snowfall that brought out the
Canadian Peace Corps may have frozen them for three years. Perhaps
Visage has missed the helpful e-mails I get on a regular basis that
promise to increase my ejaculate by no less than 581% - I'm confident
that this could give his badger sperm futures a rigid upward cant that
makes MarchFIRST stock look downright dowdy by comparison. It might
also pay for writers with new material.
Perhaps we can restore interest in FidoNews by creating 'FidoNews
Classic', a collection of classic reprints from battles past. I'm sure
you, as Editor, could also increase interest by holding a weekly
contest reprinting old articles with the theme "Old or New?", and
readers could guess which are originals and which are cunning
reprints. Winners would receive a free vinyl-bound collection of all
the 'Should the Snooze be dedicated to technical matters only?'
articles since 1984.

Luke Kolin (formerly 1:250/714)

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the -=_guidelines_=-:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line
should be with an * before it. The second time and second line
should without the * and centered. This will help in the format
since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and
the other one will remain and show what the article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only
real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who
might be reading the Fidonews.
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
FIDONEWS 18-51 Page 27 17 Dec 2001
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to:

Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
