GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
The Fidonet, Zone 1, Echolist
By Frank Vest
Just some random thoughts. Take them as ideas, suggestions or just
ignore them
The Elist:
While this is a good tool, I have some concerns about it.
1. Why list echos that are not distributed? If you look at the thing,
there are a lot of "place holder" and "Tag holder" entries.
A. This adds a lot of bulk to the Elist.
1. Harder to search the list
B. It robs others of starting an echo that might be viable if
distributed.
This is a dis-service to Fidonet. What if someone generated a list of
thousands of combinations of "Echo Tags" and elisted them? A person
with a computer could do this and I'm surprised it hasn't been
attempted.
2. Why is there a "Volume" listed?
A. How can anyone know what the volume of an echo will be?
1. Estimate the volume?
a. Over what? a week? month? year?
B. Is this a "weapon" that can be used to remove an echo?
In this day and time, an echo can have a volume of 50 messages one
week and 0 for the next four weeks... only to be followed by 100 a
week after that.
Just some things to think about. I'm not kicking the Elist. It is a
good tool to prevent duplicate echos, show what echos are available,
tell who the Moderator is and other facts that help Fidonet Echomail.
On the other hand, it could be used to control echos.
Regards,
Frank

What has been, will be again?
By Frank Vest

There is a belief that time is a circle and what has been will be
again. IOW, If it happened in the past, it will happen again in the
future.
FIDONEWS 18-39 Page 3 24 Sep 2001
I'm not sure what the above has to do with what I'm going to write,
but it sure sounded neat. :-)
I'm sitting here thinking about Fidonet, computers, the past, the
future, computer viruses and other such things (that seems to be
normal for me). :-)
I'm not a tech sort of person, but I remember having an old CPM
machine. I graduated from that to a "real" computer (IBM PS/2) shortly
thereafter. When I got to the "big time" of the PS/2, I started
learning about viruses and how they can infect and affect a computer.
With Dos 5.00 as my operating system and me accessing BBS so much, I
was concerned. I took the measures to prevent infection and did my
best to "keep an eye" on the system.
Time went on and along came the likes of Windows, OS/2, Linux and
other such programs and operating systems. Along with these came, of
course, more and stronger viruses.
So, where is this editorial going with all this? I don't know. :-)
Here's a thought
It seems that the more popular the operating system, the more viruses
there are that can affect it. Of course, things like the Internet,
Fidonet and other stuff where many people share and access each
other's systems has helped, I'm sure. I can't say for sure, but I
don't remember CPM having a virus problem. I hear that a virus can't
be written for Linux. OS/2 is supposed to be fairly safe as well.
Ok, so what?
Well, It seems that as new operating systems come into being, or
become popular, there are more viruses written for them. So, here's a
strange thought.
Fidonet programs, as we know, tend to be small. Many are still Dos
based, or have a Dos version. Now, I've not heard of a virus being
written for Dos in a long time. So, is it safe to say that Dos is
virus free? Probably not, but I'd say that the chances of having a new
Dos virus hit your old Dos box is not very likely. :)
With that in mind.... As computers become even more popular, the
internet gains even more use, operating systems evolve and viruses
follow along with this path, there could come a time where a virus
will succeed in stopping the Internet and, maybe, enough computers in
the right places to shut the world down.
Wouldn't it be something if all of us "old Dos" users became the only
systems that didn't get shut down due to a virus? Wouldn't it be
strange to see international powers come to Fidonet and ask for help
in getting information flowing since Fidonet and these old Dos
machines were the only things still running?
<shaking head upon awakening>

Wow! What a dream!!..... Or was it? ;-)

AMERICANS
[email protected]
Patriotism is a bond that welds us together as one nation.
Freedom is the spine of our constitution.
Justice is the spinal cord of the constitution.
With Freedom and Justice we have Liberty to work, play, worship and
live in the civil manner of our choice. That is the reason so many
come to our shores for freedom and a new way of life. Together all
peoples of this great country will defeat and destroy terrorism. We
MUST stay united and bonded by patriotism, together... for all human
kind! Our sincere thanks to all of the nations of the world that have
pledged their support and sympathies for our, and the world's grave
loss of the WTC. "Stand Tall and Proud", America!
Now a short note from Governor Jim Gilmore:
Dear Friends:
Over the past week and a half, we have all seen, heard and felt the
true spirit of America and Americans. While as a nation we mourn the
tragic loss of so many innocent lives, our character and resolve has
not been broken.
In his speech to a Joint Session of Congress, President Bush said,
"We are a country awakened to danger and called to defend freedom."
And - as a nation - we will rise to the challenge.
We will not live in terror. We will stand united (with all nations
against terrorism), by the strongest and deepest of ties - that of
being an American.
With a singleness of mind and purpose, we will persevere.
Sincerely,
Governor Jim Gilmore

Nemesis
By Kay Shapero (1:102/125)
It's called "legwork."
Step by step
Into the past
Winding the thread before you.
From the wreckage to the crash.
From the crash to the plane.
From the plane to the airport
Step by step
Into the past
Winding the thread before you.
Find the one who saw the killer.
Find the one who drove the killer.
Find the one who housed the killer.
Step by step
Into the past
Winding the thread before you.
And at the end
The Minotaur?
Bring your spear.
It's called "legwork".

CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES
=================================================================
"JESUS IS WATCHING YOU"
A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight
around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a CD player to
place in his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark,
"Jesus is watching you".
He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off and
froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head,
promised himself a vacation after the next big score, then clicked the
light back on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he
pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a
bell he heard
"Jesus is watching you".
Totally rattled, he shone his light around frantically, looking for
the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his
flashlight came to rest on a parrot.
"Did you say that"?, he hissed at the parrot.
"Yes", the parrot confessed, and then squawked "I'm just trying to
warn you".
The burglar relaxed. "Warn me, huh" - "Who do you think you are
anyway"?
"Moses", replied the bird. "
Moses"?, the burglar laughed. "What kind of stupid people would name a
parrot "Moses"?.
The bird promptly answered: "The same kind of people that would name
a Rottweiler *Jesus*".

CLASSIFIED ADS
=================================================================
Rotating ads
As a service of the Fidonews, I am prepared to offer rotating ads for
those that provide services to Fidonet such as Mail Hubs, Gateways,
Fidonet via Internet and such.
How this works:
1. Create an ad following the guidelines for the Fidonews.
2. Keep it short and to the point.
3. Put contact and other needed information in the ad.
4. Send it to Frank Vest as a file attach.
A. E-Mail "
[email protected]
B. Netmail "Frank Vest - 1:124/6308
I will put the ad in a pool and use a program each week to
automatically rotate the ads into the Fidonews.
Please! If you stop offering service or need to change your ad,
contact me! This is very important to keep the ads current.
I'm doing this on a trial basis. If it gets to be a problem, I will
have to discontinue the service. I can make no promise of how often
your ad will be in the Fidonews. This will depend on how many ads I
have to rotate through.
As always in Fidonet, I make no guaranties. :)
Regards,
Frank Vest - Fidonews Editor

FIDONEWS INFORMATION

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the -=_guidelines_=-:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line
should be with an * before it. The second time and second line
should without the * and centered. This will help in the format
since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and
the other one will remain and show what the article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only
real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who
might be reading the Fidonews.
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to:

Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
