HEADLINE NEWS
=================================================================
In perspective
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308
It's been almost a week since the planes crashed in the USA. This
week's Fidonews is, admittedly, a reflection of this. As was pointed
out by Michiel van der Vlist in the Fidonews echo;
"Keep in mind that FidoNews is globally distributed. I've said it
before and I'll say it again; the world is bigger than the USA."
That is very true and there are many that are less than sympathetic to
the USA. Let us all remember that Fidonet is not the USA and the USA
is not Fidonet. What I'm about to say may not be popular with many.
It needs to be said anyway.
Yes, this last week was tragic. Yes, emotions are high. Yes, there are
many things happening. None of this will, or can, be settled in the
Fidonews. Filling the Fidonews publication or echo with politics and
sentiments for or against this is not what is needed, desired, or
anything else. As I said in the Fidonews echo and in this edition,
prayers are needed.
Whatever your feelings, say a prayer to your God or whatever you
believe in. This edition is mostly about last week's events. It offers
help and prayers, not politics and finger pointing.
As Editor, I feel I'd be wrong to not allow articles into the Fidonews
about the events of last Tuesday. As Editor, I feel that I would be
wrong to allow politics to rule the Fidonews.
This edition of the Fidonews is about the events of last Tuesday. I've
tried hard to make it non-political. If I've failed, it is I who have
failed.
We need to get back to normal in Fidonet and in the world. To do less
would be to give in to the events of last Tuesday. Let's look to the
future and get back to Fidonet.
Thank you, Fidonet, for understanding this.
In this light and with these thoughts, on to the news.

Pray for Humanity
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308
I'm sure that by now the world knows of the planes that crashed into
the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington,
D.C., U.S.A. on Sept. 11, 2001.
I'm not here to ask for sympathy for or condemnation of this. I'm
here to ask for some simple prayers.
Pray for those who were killed. For they are our brothers and
sisters.
Pray for those that did this. For they too are our brothers and
sisters.
Pray for humanity. For we need all the help we can get.
Pray for understanding. For without it, we are lost.
Pray for peace. For if we don't achieve it,.... need I say more?
Please understand that I'm not saying that justice shouldn't be done.
I'm not saying that those that did this deed be forgiven.
All I'm asking is for some simple prayers. We, all of this planet,
will need them to get through this.
Sincerely,
Frank Vest - Fidonews Editor and fellow human being

We gotta make a change
By Petko Bossakov
2:535/1
Hello everyone,
Since I'm representing the Bulgarian people in Fidonet, I believe I
must express my thoughts and feelings about the recent tragedy in the
United States. As a citizen of the Western world, I cannot understand
these terrorists' disrespectful attitude towards the sanctity of Life.
Life is the greatest wonder on this planet, in this Universe and this
reality, and no cause that compromises Life may be considered worthy
under any circumstances. For a small slice of Eternity we are granted
the privilege to exist, eat, sleep, work, have fun, fall in love,
dream, be here, doing whatever we do; for eons, we were not. We have
to respect that privilege.
As a true optimist, I still believe that this century can give us
FIDONEWS 18-38 Page 4 17 Sep 2001
peace and prosperity, in spite of the way it started. My sympathy goes
to all the human beings directly or indirectly affected by this. Let
us all stop for a moment and think about these words from a song made
by one of my favorite artists of the last century, Tupac Shakur:
We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see, the old way wasn't working, so it's on us to do
what we gotta do to survive.
Petko Bossakov

Another contribution
From: John Aldred
Pray for the siblings, parents, children & other relatives of those
who were killed. They are victims too; perhaps more so than those
killed. Who knows how long the survivors will have to live with their
personal losses.
It's such a sad time. And the whole world should be in disgrace that
in such modern times of relative "enlightenment" something like this
could even happen. Perhaps this "enlightenment" is what shielded us
from the possibility that this is even conceivable. I have no doubt
that one way or another, the orchestrators of this atrocity will be
brought to justice.
We also have to pray that we don't see repeats of events, in the last
few days, as time passes in the future.
To every member of the "civilized" world, which is not limited to just
those commonly known as "civilized" countries, but also those
individual innocents who are caught up in the middle of this through
no fault of their own:
You are in my heart and prayers. God (whomever you believe that to
be) bless you all.
John

Terrorism attacks September 11th, 2001
From "George Vandervort" <
[email protected]>
In case you haven't already heard, both towers of New York City's
World Trade Center have now collapsed and a serious fire rages at the
U.S. Pentagon, all due to terrorist attacks using hijacked planes.
Check your local news for more details.
FIDONEWS 18-38 Page 5 17 Sep 2001
As someone who has lived in a war zone for more than a year in my past
I can tell you that there are some things you should consider when
talking to anyone who may have been affected by today's events.
1. Don't joke about it, even if you think it might help cheer someone
up.
2. Don't coddle. Treat them with respect and help them in the ways you
would normally help. Offer support, but assume they will tell you if
they need help.
3. Don't speculate, and don't act like you understand or know how they
feel. If you haven't gone through an extremely traumatic event you
don't know what its like. Talk to them, but listen more than talk.
If you're affected by this directly yourself, take our condolences and
hopes that you recover. If we can help, ask.

About the Fidonet Software Listing.
From Editor
I've been in comunication with Todd Cochrane about the "Fidonet
Sotfware Listing" column. Since his life is basicaly on hold for a
couple of weeks or so, I asked if I could take the column if he is
called to duty. So, For now, I'll just include the listing each week.
If you need an update, you can mail Todd and copy to me at
"
[email protected]". That way Todd will know of the change. This might
get a little strange, but with Todd and I comparing notes, I think it
will work out. :)

From Me

We all know by now what the headlines of this edition of the Fidonews
is about. I'm sure that all nations have heard and, perhaps, watched
as the events unfolded.
I've always felt that Fidonet was a family... at the very least, a
community. I've enjoyed, in my few years in Fidonet, reading messages
from other countries. Reading how they feel and what they do, how
their customs differ from mine and all the things that Fidonet
provides.
As the events unfolded this last week, my thoughts moved from shock
to anger to sympathy and back for time after time. They are still
moving through these emotions and more.
With all of these emotions moving and all the things happening, I
wondered what the Fidonews was going to be like. How would these other
nations and countries that are part of this Fidonet community react.
I got my answer in the form of an article from Petko Bossakov of
Bulgaria. He had already sent an article for another section of the
Fidoews and then sent another one with his feelings and sympathy for
the U.S.A.
To Petko, and all of Fidonet in other countries, Thanks for your
thoughts and prayers.
Kind regards,
Frank

HUMOR IN A FIDO VEIN
=================================================================
The Sysop, upclose and personal
Translated by Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1
This is an old text file, contributed by the users of SORE BBS, a node
in the former Net 350. Unfortunately the BBS is down, but the text
stays, and I hope the authors wouldn't mind if I translated it and
submitted it to the Fidonews. Some of its charm is lost in the
translation, but it's still quite funny. Some brand names that are
specific to Bulgaria have been changed.
His day started like a Star Trek series. The only difference was the
surrounding environment. It wasn't a spaceship, but simply his own
house, where he grew up among his incomprehensible relatives.
He woke up late, around noon. He opened his rheumy and tired eyes and
lazily stretched. After focusing his blurred sight with the help of
his glasses, a thought passed through his dishevelled head like bytes
pass through a phone cable. "Today I have to put the new file areas in
order, because tonight I have to chat with that cool girl, Stilyana,
again. By no means I can allow any error to slip in. I have to make a
good impression -- talking to a female creature in the chatroom is a
rare occasion. Sometimes I feel that the girls who connect to BBSes
are not like the others... Oh, they are the thing that makes us move
forward, like the head of a floppy, which is formatting a disk. Well,
sometimes we stay somewhere longer, thinking about a girl for some
time, until she's fed up with chatting. It's like a bad sector on the
disk -- stops us for a while, and then we start moving forward again,
until we get to another bad sector. Damn, how stupid I am, comparing
girls to bad sectors. Well, what can I do -- the bad sectors are less
than the normal ones after all. Yaaaaaawn!" He yawned thoughtfully.
Looking at the ceiling, he noticed a small spider. "It is as big as a
pixel in 320x200," he measured.
The noise from the computer put him to sleep again. After two more
hours, a strange, but familiar feeling made him get out of bed. The
smell reminded him that it's time to change underwear. "Damn, I
forgot that this would happen again. Sitting with these pants so long
in front of the machine... that's an insult to my dear computer.
Let's deal with the change instantly. I wonder where did mom put the
clean ones?" The sysop started rummaging in the drawers, but with no
result. "Why can't everything be in a good order like my file
areas... I have to teach my mom to work with Maximus. Then maybe we
could get along with her."
After an hour of looking in the wardrobe, our hero found what he was
looking for. He took off his yellowish pants and when he got naked
like a boxless CD, he looked at his floppy penis. He thought "Eh, so
much time passed, and I still haven't felt the pleasure of doing it
with a real girl. It must be a lot better than watching a MPEG with
Pamela Anderson. But maybe this evening I will get to know Stilyana
better, I hope she uploads some digitized picture..." Thinking about
this, fast as a hard disk (UDMA2), the SysOp changed his clothes,
threw the dirty pants on the chandelier and headed for the kitchen.
FIDONEWS 18-38 Page 9 17 Sep 2001
As often happenned, his mother had left a note asking him to buy some
stuff from the shop. "Can't they learn that I don't want to go out
for such stupid things! I might visit Pesho, but he hasn't made an
upgrade lately, so there's no reason to go there. If only bread could
be bought over the Internet... and then teleported through the
modem... If everything is made of bits, why bread isn't? It'd be best
if people could learn not to eat. Or maybe some kind of pill once a
day. And now I have to go back and forth every day, like
error-correction code. This is stupid. And it's just about time for
those scientists to make a chair with a toilet in it. Why does a
primitive need have to disturb me?"
These were the fundamental questions that our Sysop was thinking
about. And he firmly decided to put this for discussion in the BBS
(and why not also in the website).
In that moment, the temperature in the fridge managed to rise to the
point that the compressor turned on. The sysop jumped: "Wow, it
scared me, it's like the hard disk of an Apple ][. That reminds me
that I have to put a newspaper ad that I'm selling my old harddisk. I
love it, but I need money after all."
After these digital thoughts, the SysOp opened a jar of peanut butter
and spread it generously on a slice of bread, which he bit off with a
lot of indignation. This was caused by the sign "Peanut butter" on
the label: "Why the hell have these idiots written it with Playbill,
when it'd be better in Times New Roman? Designers! I wonder who pays
them!?"
This time, however, he decided not to send a complaint to the
company, because this was just a small jar with some stuff made of
peanuts or whatever.
After all this, he started working. The first thing he did was
looking at the newest users on the BBS. "I don't like this guy, Angel,
he's been online 22 times and hasn't send me any file or message, just
downloading. Damn, 18 MB! I'll lower his level, he could've at least
left me his opinion about the BBS. I gotta put a note for users, and
maybe in a bold font."
Continuing with these thoughts, the SysOp didn't notice that his room
had become a mess. This kept up until his mother returned from work.
Just upon entering she felt sick and in spite of the fact that she was
tired from today's work, she started yelling at him. And the poor
Sysop thought, "Why do you have to scream, better help me spread the
news about the BBS outside Bulgaria, you work in a newspaper after
all. And tomorrow I promise that I'll buy the bread."
One of the things the Sysop couldn't understand is that the neighbors
from the block thought he was "a very good boy", while his former
schoolmates said "what a f***ing nerd!". Maybe they can't appreciate
his qualities. Aah, the reason is that they can't see how well he
configured his two modems. They both use the same interrupt. Of
course, they can't work at the same time, but maybe in the future...
At that moment an unpleasant, but familiar pain got him out of this
line of thoughts. The old haemorrhoids again. "I have to do
FIDONEWS 18-38 Page 10 17 Sep 2001
something," he said, "this evening I will check that website about
self-treatment. It's good that there are people to think about it."
Well, I might go on with this story till the end of time. I can only
come to the conclusion that the Sysop went on like an Iron
Maiden song says, "From Here To Eternity".

CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES
=================================================================
Compassionate Lawyer
From: Warren Bonner <
[email protected]>
One afternoon, a wealthy lawyer was riding in the back of his
limousine when he saw two men eating grass by the road side. He
ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. "Why are
you eating grass?" he asked one man.
"We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied.
"Oh, come along with me then," instructed the lawyer.
"But, sir, I have a wife and two children!"
"Bring them along!" replied the lawyer. He turned to the other man
and said, "Come with us."
"But sir, I have a wife and six children!" the second man answered.
"Bring them as well!" answered the lawyer as he headed for his limo.
They all climbed into the car, which was no easy task, even for a car
as large as the limo. Once underway, one of the poor fellows says,
"Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you."
The lawyer replied, "No problem, the grass at my home is almost a
foot tall."

Computer Contest from On High
From: Warren Bonner <
[email protected]>
Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better
at using the computer.
They had been going at it for days, and God was tired of hearing all
the bickering. Finally, God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a
test which will take two hours and it will judge who does the better
job."
So Satan and Jesus sat down at their keyboards and typed away.
They moused.
They did spreadsheets.
They wrote reports.
They sent faxes.
They sent e-mail.
FIDONEWS 18-38 Page 13 17 Sep 2001
They sent out e-mail with attachments.
They downloaded.
They did some genealogy reports.
They made cards.
They did every known job.
But, ten minutes before the time was up, lightning suddenly flashed
across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured, and of course, the
electricity went off.
Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word know in
the underworld.
Jesus just sighed.
The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted
their computers. Satan started searching frantically screaming, "It's
gone! It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!"
Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all his files from the
past two hours.
Satan observed this and became even more irate.
"Wait! He cheated! How did he do it??!!"
(You'll love the punch line....)
God shrugged and said, "Jesus Saves."

CLASSIFIED ADS
=================================================================
Rotating ads
As a service of the Fidonews, I am prepared to offer rotating ads for
those that provide services to Fidonet such as Mail Hubs, Gateways,
Fidonet via Internet and such.
How this works:
1. Create an ad following the guidelines for the Fidonews.
2. Keep it short and to the point.
3. Put contact and other needed information in the ad.
4. Send it to Frank Vest as a file attach.
A. E-Mail "
[email protected]
B. Netmail "Frank Vest - 1:124/6308
I will put the ad in a pool and use a program each week to
automatically rotate the ads into the Fidonews.
Please! If you stop offering service or need to change your ad,
contact me! This is very important to keep the ads current.
I'm doing this on a trial basis. If it gets to be a problem, I will
have to discontinue the service. I can make no promise of how often
your ad will be in the Fidonews. This will depend on how many ads I
have to rotate through.
As always in Fidonet, I make no guaranties. :)

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the -=_guidelines_=-:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line
should be with an * before it. The second time and second line
should without the * and centered. This will help in the format
since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and
the other one will remain and show what the article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only
real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who
might be reading the Fidonews.
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to:

Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
