TOP STORIES

Kind of a sad Fidonews
By Frank Vest
[email protected]
Yes, it's kind of a sad Fidonews.
There are two articles that relate the demise of Fidonet Nodes and
Nets. One relates to a Node that was forced to quit some years back
due to things beyond control. The other is kind of a sad reflection of
the current times in Fidonet.
Let's not lose heart in this. While there are those that leave us,
that is a way of life. Let's be happy for the one's that are still
here and try our best to keep ourselves here. For sure... as sure as
in life... there will be those who leave us. We don't want to see them
go, but they will go just the same.
As is shown by the story of Music Drain BBS, the loss of a BBS and
Fidonet Node can be turned into something positive. A gathering of
Sysops to remember a lost one. A chance to meet and chat, face to
face, with those that we only know from messages. One BBS created a
"family". The loss of that BBS wasn't enough to destroy that "family".
The family still lives and the lost one is rememberd. A sadness, yes,
but a positve as well.

Sadly, from Region 19
Taken from a message by Steve Quarrella
1:393/9005
Net 380 is gone. I get some disconnects there, one FAX machine, and a
BBS without a mailer. I've got a note out to the sysop of that BBS,
but I admit that I'm not optimistic.
Net 147 may be gone. The NC has a note on his web site that his
system is dead. One other system has a FAX machine online, another is
definitely gone, and another is RNA (Ring No Answer).

"Egorkin's "funeral"
From : Max Krasnikov
2:5045/57.18
(Tuesday, 28 August 2001)
Minor editing by Frank Vest
Vladivostok. Summer. It's a time, when all the people strive to go as
far as possible to islands, sea, China, Japan... Due to this tendency
a sharp comedown in the trafic is feeling, which resolves itself into
40Kb per day ... e.g. just nothing... However, people don't diverge
the traditions, so 23-th August, by plan, all got around the square
near the sea front (Naberezhnaja) by the "elephants" to celebrate
"Egorkin's "funeral"", to catch those who was not able to be hunt down
by netmail, to solve small net problems, and just to have a bock, meet
in real those who converse by fido... Generally it could be named most
likely fidotap rather then sysopp...
A little bit hystory: 23-th August is a kind of significant date for
us, 4-5 years ago, in the time of modems at 2400, a man with the name
Egor Nikolaev (2:5045/9) worked as administrator at a big Vladivostok'
restaurant-hotel. He had a node with address 2:5045/9. He occupied 3
phone lines for the node, and he was a big distributing node in the
net. He had a BBS named Music Drain, which gathered people from all
over the Vladivostok in the quiet evenings and nights. There people
were picking up each other, rubbing shoulders with each other, making
arrangements... at that time such BBS was a basic source of
information and gossip for computer-modem oriented people, Internet
was not yet online, even fido was not that much common as it's now. So
one fine day a paper from the Phone Central came to the management of
the restaurant. So to say, it was needed to register the units on the
phone line, otherwise - amercement and all in the same vein... the
management, of course, asked Egor to clear away all the modems from
the lines... In fact, it came to close not only the node, but the BBS
also, which was for 3 years a retreat for a lot of fidos and just
users... This was just a killing decision for him, he had to kill his
child with his own hands... And the last days of the stantion's life
he gathered all to the funeral of Music Drain BBS, it was 23-th August
... Since that time year in year out 23-th August is the Commemoration
FIDONEWS 18-37 Page 4 10 Sep 2001
Day of Music Drain BBS... Everything begins as usually by the
"elephants" and ends in the underground club BSB...

I guess it's about normal?
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308(.1)
Last week was a holiday in the U.S.A. and some other countries as
well. I guess it's just normal that on holidays, most people have
nothing better to do than send articles to the Fidonews. After all,
the lakes and recreation areas are packed and the battle to get to
them is terrible. There's nothing open to go do. Many are on vacation
on these weeks. What else is there to do other than write articles for
the Fidonews and messages in the Fidonet echos?
Last week I was thrilled to have so many articles sent in. It was
great! There was news from all around Fidonet and beyond. Most of the
articles were from you... not me. It was beautiful.
Let's not forget that the Fidonews and Fidonet are here every week.
Not just holidays or vacation time.
I realize as well as anyone that jobs and family come first. There is
always something to do and vacations are important to us all for a
"break in the routine". Let just not forget that Fidonet is part of
our family and the Fidonews is important to Fidonet.
It's understandable when some things come before Fidonet and the
Fidonews, but sad when Fidonet and the Fidonews are put on the bottom
of the list. :(
Thanks to all of you who send in articles. Thanks as well to all of
you who read the articles and write messages in Fidonet.
Regards,
Frank Vest - Editor

The Door
From: Warren Bonner <
[email protected]>
Phil went to apply for a job. After filling out all of his
applications, he waited anxiously for the outcome. The
employer read all his applications and said,
"We have an opening for people like you."
"Oh, great," he said, "What is it?"
"It's called the door!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
like, ..... just about every day
From: Warren Bonner <
[email protected]>
My wife and I were lunching at a sidewalk cafe in Huntington Beach,
CA.
Our waitress looked like a real surfer girl - athletic with a great
tan and blond hair. Mulling over the menu, my wife asked her if the
roast beef was rare. The waitress gave us a long blank look, then
replied, "Well, no...... we have it, like, ..... just about every
day."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What'd he do?
From: Warren Bonner <
[email protected]>
It was the end of the day when a cop parked his police van in front
of the station. As he gathered his equipment, his K-9 partner was
barking and he saw a little boy staring in at him.
"Is that a dog you got back there?" the little boy asked.
"It sure is," The cop replied.
Puzzled, the boy looked at him and then towards the back of the van.
Finally he said, "What'd he do?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Pray for me! :)
One Sunday in a Midwest city, a young child was "acting up" during the
morning worship hour. The parents did their best to maintain some
sense of order in the pew but were losing the battle. Finally, the
father picked the little fellow up and walked sternly up the aisle
on his way out. Just before reaching the safety of the foyer, the
little called loudly to the congregation, "Pray for me! Pray for me!"

CLASSIFIED ADS
=================================================================
Rotating ads
As a service of the Fidonews, I am prepared to offer rotating ads for
those that provide services to Fidonet such as Mail Hubs, Gateways,
Fidonet via Internet and such.
How this works:
1. Create an ad following the guidelines for the Fidonews.
2. Keep it short and to the point.
3. Put contact and other needed information in the ad.
4. Send it to Frank Vest as a file attach.
A. E-Mail "
[email protected]
B. Netmail "Frank Vest - 1:124/6308
I will put the ad in a pool and use a program each week to
automatically rotate the ads into the Fidonews.
Please! If you stop offering service or need to change your ad,
contact me! This is very important to keep the ads current.
I'm doing this on a trial basis. If it gets to be a problem, I will
have to discontinue the service. I can make no promise of how often
your ad will be in the Fidonews. This will depend on how many ads I
have to rotate through.
As always in Fidonet, I make no guaranties. :)

Corrections to Fidonews Volume 18, Number 36 on 03 Sep 2001
The article "TOP 10 REASONS" indicates that it was from From
Lesley-Dee Dylan. While this is true, it should be noted that the
article *WAS NOT* written by Lesley-Dee Dylan.

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the -=_guidelines_=-:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line
should be with an * before it. The second time and second line
should without the * and centered. This will help in the format
since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and
the other one will remain and show what the article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. (the only
real rule in this whole thing)
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
FIDONEWS 18-37 Page 24 10 Sep 2001
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to:

Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
