GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
New happenings in my life
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308(.1)
Just to get off of the kicks and politics of Fidonet, I thought I'd
write a little about what is happening in my life. I'm not getting
real personal here, but it's a change. :-)
I'd like to invite other Fidonet people to write some about things
that are happening in your life. It doesn't have to be real personal
or some earth shaking event. Just about anything that might be
happening in your life. The idea here is to make Fidonet and the
Fidonews more "family" and "community". We are, BTW, a family of sorts
and what is happening in our individual lives might be of interest to
others. Who knows, you might make a friend or two. :-))
This idea was hatched by noticing that the first issues of the
Fidonews, Tom Jennings as Editor, asked for events happening in the
lives of Fidonet members. It seemed to be his belief that Fidonet was
a community, a thought that many still have, though not always shown.
Anyway. Send articles about the birth of your child, grandchild, your
pending marriage, what new things you are attempting with your
computer(s), BBS, or whatever to the Editor as a submission. Even the
remodeling of your house... Heck we're a community here, right? :-)
Enough of that. Here's my offering. :-)
Ok. Recently I tried to network three of my systems together just for
fun. My thought was to be able to play games and read/write messages
from any of the systems without having to have several setups on
several systems. I could also see the benefits of having the BBS
download files on a system with more space and allowing the BBS to
simply retrieve them as needed. Easy way to increase the BBS. :-)
I had a couple of NIC cards and with some cable, I started. Now, I'm
not a network specialist in any form. I couldn't get the cards to
configure and the whole thing failed to work. I finally found setup
programs for the cards and tried again. With the help of some Fidonet
members, I learned that the setup for many of the older NIC cards must
be done from Dos... not a Dos prompt.
It's been a learning experience, but I now have three systems running
on a peer to peer. Two are Win98 and one is Dos. FWIW, There is an
excellent site on the Internet at:
http://www.wown.com/ that has some
very good help on networking a peer to peer. You can also get
software to network Dos systems with TCP/IP and other protocols on the
Internet. If anyone is interested in the Dos stuff, let me know and
I'll try to point you at some information.
Have a great day!

The Amazing Zone 1 Word Twist Game
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308(.1)
It's time once again, as always, to play "The Amazing Zone 1 Word
Twist Game".
How to play?
Simple: Any statement made or word(s) said by someone in a Fidonet
Echo are interpreted and twisted, in any way you want, to mean what
you desire, regardless of the intention of the statements or word(s).
This is best used in an administrative echo to disrupt or stop someone
from actually doing something that another sees as wrong without
having to justify why it is wrong.
Let's start:
First, This is my side of post made in a Fidonet, Zone 1, Echo by me
and how it can be twisted. My post is noted as "Statement *" and my
twist of the statement is noted by "Twist *".The statements are real.
The twists are made up and should not be related to any real twists
that have been used on any messages.
Begin:
"Why are some areas listing (gaining) nodes while others are not? I'm
not pointing a finger at any one group here."
If only it would be taken that way.
Statement 1:
"Fidonet has a Policy. Some respect it, some ignore it. Some follow
it, some work around it, some disregard it while others do other
things with/to it."
Twist 1:
I agree with you. The ones that ignore it are wrong because it is
law. It's precious and should be revered and followed.
Twist 2:
Yes, you are right, it is a bad policy and should be ignored and
disregarded. It is outdated and should be thrown out.
Statement 2:
"If P4 is ignored, anyone that asks for a Node number can be given one
by anyone that is willing to assign one."
Twist 1:
Absolutely. That's how it should be and we are doing that.
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 4 23 Jul 2001
Twist 2:
Of course you are right. P4 forbids that. How dare someone think that
Node numbers can be given by anyone!
Statement 3:
"If P4 is followed, one must apply for a Node number and agree to
certain things."
Twist 1:
Yes. That is what is killing Fidonet. People don't join because of
P4. You are correct in wanting it thrown out.
Twist 2:
Yes. P4 should be followed. We agree.
Statement 4:
"I'm not saying either or any is bad or good, just stating the facts
as I see them."
Twist 1:
Facts?!? Yeah, your facts!
Twist 2:
Facts?!? Yeah, your facts!
Statement 5:
"If any organization has a policy and that policy is followed, there
will be those that won't join that organization because of the policy.
If there is someone, or section/group in the organization that is
willing to ignore the policy, the ones that wouldn't join before
because of the policy will/might then join."
Twist 1:
You are right on. Policy should be followed to prevent those
undesirables from getting in.
Twist 2:
Absolutely. Allow new Nodes in. Forget about that old, outdated text
file called a policy.
Statement 6:
"When this happens, there is going to be conflict between at least two
factions of the organization."
Twist 1:
Yup. And our way is best. How good of you to see this.
Twist 2:
Yup. And our way is best. How good of you to see this.
Statement 7:
"The ones that follow the policy will fight with the ones that ignore
the policy because it is against the policy and wrong in their view."
Twist 1:
<sarcasm>
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 5 23 Jul 2001
Of course we can't have that famous policy ignored. Heaven forbid!
What is this world coming to?!?
Twist 2:
<no sarcasm>
Of course we can't have that famous policy ignored. Heaven forbid!
What is this world coming to?!? I'm glad you're with us on this.
Statement 8:
"The ones that ignore the policy will argue that the policy is wrong
and defend this with arguments that they are gaining members for the
organization."
Twist 1:
Of course they will. That's the only argument they have.
Twist 2:
Yup. Can't argue with facts.
Statement 9:
"There could be others that will argue for parts of the policy to be
followed and other parts to be ignored because of different reasons
and judgements. Sadly, in many instances, the sides that are arguing
will be totally unwilling to work towards fixing, developing, or other
wise helping, preferring to argue and continue doing as they always
have."
Twist 1:
Fix what? It isn't broken. What we do is working fine. Prove it needs
be fixed.
Twist 2:
Fix what? It can't be fixed. What we do is working fine. Prove that
it can be fixed and we'll talk.
End:
Of course, this isn't always the case and not all people in Zone one
participate in this game, but it does happen. :(
Have fun,
Frank

Echomail Saga
By Frank Vest
I asked a simple question in an echo. It was in innocence and I
thought it would be answered simply and over with. Not in Fidonet.
:-))
The subject was about how the distribution systems in Zone 1 work in
regards to how they "mesh" with each other, the hierarchy, "Who's
Who", and such.
Up to the point that I dropped the conversation, it has been fairly
civil in that echo on the subject. I'd like to thank the participants
for that and also thank the Moderators for allowing the conversation
to happen in the echo, which is, BTW, not really `on topic' for that
echo.
I've had thoughts for some time about the distribution systems in Zone
1. There are two or three, dependant on how you look at it. So, I
asked the following questions;
"Real question to me is: Why does Fidonet Zone 1 need a tier??...
better yet, why does Fidonet Zone 1 need three distribution systems."
Answer: Terminology. Different systems call their members by different
terms... IE: Tier1, 2 ... ZHub, RHub ....
"Another real question to me is why are there three separate lists of
echos for Fidonet in Zone 1? Why not have one official list and all
carry it?"
The common answer, from all sides, to this question seems to be, `Zone
1 doesn't need multiple distribution systems for echomail' and
`politics'.
I have been in this conversation via the echo and via Netmail. Some
feared that I was receiving one side of a story and believing that
side only. Far from it. I was gathering information in the only way I
know how or can. I ask questions and read answers.
As this plays out.... from my point of view....
There are three echomail distribution systems in Zone 1. Some discount
one of those because it carries a lot of multi-lingual echos. I can't
discount that since, 1.) It carries much the same echos as the other
Z1 distribution systems, 2.) What does language differences have to do
with distribution?
It is mentioned that the distribution systems, while separate, have
"bridge" Node(s) that may or may not be part of each system but act as
a connection between the systems.
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 7 23 Jul 2001
To me, that is a weak place in the echomail distribution. since a
break there will kill echomail for one half to one third of Z1
depending on the number of Nodes linked to each distribution system
and such.
It is mentioned that Fidonet is a network.
Duh... Yes. :)
As such, there are tiers in the network. Some are above others in some
fashion due to how the network is set up. The "rank" in this setup is
strictly technical and has nothing to do with power. Ok... let's look
at that.
Fidonet, I believe, is a peer to peer network. All Nodes in this
Fidonet network can connect to every other Node equally. I'm not
saying that each Node does or has to connect to every other Node, only
that they can connect to each other where and if desired. That's a
peer to peer?
When things such as top level and other titles are inserted into this
peer to peer network, it becomes something else. The "equal" goes away
and there is a "power" based on who can connect to who for what reason
and where do these connections fit into the "rank" of the system.
Then, there are divisions due to technical situations. One hub feeds
this side and one hub feeds that side due to the demand. It is now a
"Client/Server" system. It can still be peer to peer in the respect
that anyone can connect to anyone else for one or all echos, but there
is a change that takes place.
I'm not a network technician and I don't know a lot about networks or
some other things. What I do see, however, is how the above plays out
in the real world with people.
Take Fidonet and set it up as a peer to peer. Then add people to
operate the systems on this peer to peer network. Now, add in some
people that decide to set up a distribution system and make a
"client/server" system for the network to increase efficiency.
Remember that this can be and still is a peer to peer network in the
respect that each Node can connect to any other Node. In fact, the
people that set up the "client/server" system are peers to one another
in some respects.
Good idea and it can work. The problem comes in when you start dealing
with the "human" factor. Put personalities into play and other human
things and we end up with problems. One doesn't like another and a
word is said that doesn't set well and there is a disagreement between
two hubs about something and the next thing we know, there is a split.
Now we have two distribution systems doing the same thing separately.
How do they interact? A bridge system that can and will work with
both.
Time passes and there is another disagreement, another split and
another bridge. More time and more disagreements and more bridges and
so forth.
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 8 23 Jul 2001
This may not sound like a real problem until you realize that these
bridges are stacking up on top of each other, the distribution systems
are stacking up and the weight is growing. Given time, there will be
one distribution system for each Node. In other words, each Node will
be it's own distribution system and will bridge to every other Node.
Can you say Peer to Peer? You should... That's what we end up with.
:-)
Ok, so what's so bad about this? The trouble that is caused in
getting from point A to point A. Huh?!? "Point A to Point A"?!? Yes.
We have gone nowhere and caused/had a lot of trouble in the process.
Depending on how this happens to play out, we could go from point A to
-point A. If every Node ends up as its own distribution system and
bridge because of some disagreements and all the distribution systems
refuse to cooperate with each other and the bridges, which are the
distribution systems which are the Nodes, refuse to cooperate with
each other, the Fidonet peer to peer network dies.
Take a look around. See anything familiar?
I'm not saying that multiple distribution systems are wrong. I'm just
saying:
Forget about the top level, mesh this and that, titles and such.
Look at the Elist. Find the echos that are listed as distributed via
Fidonet.
Forget about the multi language stuff. If it's not in your language
and you don't want it, don't subscribe to it.
Check for "private" echos. IE: Regional, administrative and such.
In case there is a question if the echo is "private" or admin. or
such, ask the Moderator.
Check with the Moderators to find out if they wish to have their echo
listed and distributed via fidonet.na
---= Rules =---
1. If the echo is listed as a Fidonet echo and the Moderator wants it
distributed, by gum!, it's distributed. Period.
2. If a person feeding someone doesn't want to carry an echo, get it
from somewhere else.
3. No power allowed. No Titles allowed.
4. If other distribution systems wish to continue operation, fine. Go
for it.
5. If some want to charge for service, no problem. If some want to pay
for service, no problem. Just don't bitch about the service to anyone
except the person or "distribution system" you pay to.
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 9 23 Jul 2001
6. This is a hobby. There are no guarantees given, implied or
expressed.
7. Drop the politics!
---= End of Rules =---

I was approached by Todd Cochrane about adopting the "Fidonet Software
Listing" section of the Fidonews. Todd will now be producing, updating
and submitting that list. Any corrections, additions or whatever
should be addressed to him.
At this time, I do not have contact information on Todd. I'm sure he
will provide such in his section or let us know how to reach him for
updates and additions.

EDITOR'S CORNER
=================================================================
An Old Idea
By Frank Vest
[email protected]
In some of the original editions of the Fidonews, there were articles
from Nodes about what was happening in there personal lives and other
such things. The Editor seemed to encourage this as the thought was
that Fidonet was a community. As example of this encouragement, I
offer the following excerpts from the Fidonews:
--==--
You are ENCOURAGED to send things in for the
newsletter. ANYTHING is fit for the newsletter, such as a
description of your board, problems found, questions, jokes,
fixes, horror stories about wrong FidoNet numbers, things
for sale, etc etc etc.
--==--
I'm not sure that just "ANYTHING" is fit for the Fidonews, but I am
willing to accept most anything. We are Fidonet. We are all different.
Fidonews is the Newspaper of Fidonet. News from those members is
welcome. I'll draw the line at vulgar language.
Tom went on in the first edition to write:
--==--
Oh yeah, I did mention that ... I hereby declare all
Fido users and sysops members of the FidoNet Users Group.
Sounds pretty stupid, huh? Well ... If there are 100 Fido
systems around the country, and each has at least 100 users,
thats 10,000 people. Any group that large has advantages, if
nothing other than letters to the editor of your favorite
magazine. This is just a brainstorm at this point, but is
something to keep in mind.
--==--
This would seem to indicate that Users as well as Nodes are welcome in
the Fidonews. After all, Fidonet is more than just a bunch of
Sysops. Even with our shrinking numbers, there are still Users in
Fidonet that access BBS for the message areas. I'll buy that. :)
As you have probably noticed, I've written most of the Fidonews this
week. That's nothing new. I've been trying to get articles submitted,
but there are always the excuses. Some are pretty good excuses, but
the ones that stick out to me are the ones that blame me for articles
not being submitted. Really?!? :(
I know that there are guidelines for submissions. The first Fidonews
editions had some as well. IE:
--==--
ARTICLE SUBMISSION
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 12 23 Jul 2001
The format of this thing is totally ad hoc; please
make recomendations as to formats, sections needed, liked,
or hated, columns you'd like to see, or see removed,
anything at all. If you want to submit something regularly,
we can start a column for you.
You are ENCOURAGED to send things in for the
newsletter. ANYTHING is fit for the newsletter, such as a
description of your board, problems found, questions, jokes,
fixes, horror stories about wrong FidoNet numbers, things
for sale, etc etc etc.
SUBMITTING AN ARTICLE
An article should have your name, node number (if
applicable), followed by the text. Text can be any ASCII
derivative; WordStar, soft paragraphs, 8th bit set, etc are
all OK.
Articles can be uploaded at either Fido #1 or #51,
into the NEWS File Area, or by sending it by FidoNet. There
is a convention for naming the files, so that the newsletter
can be published automatically.
ARTICLE FILENAMES
file.ART For article type things
file.SAL Things for sale
file.NOT Notices
file.MSC Miscelaneous things
file.EDT an Editorial
file.NEW News items
file.WNT Wanted items
Make sure the name is unique, especially if you send
it by FidoNet, so you dont overwrite another article.
--==--
I'm not saying that we should do as the above, but still... If you
don't submit anything, you can't know if it will be accepted. Blame
your lazy self. The guidelines for submission are basically that,
guidelines. They are mainly technical in nature since the program that
makes the Fidonews will not handle high ascii and lines over 70
characters. The rest are still "JUST GUIDELINES". Even the character
and length problems are workable. I "fix" the articles that are
submitted that don't meet the requirements of the makenews program. I
don't mind doing this. I do mind when there are no submissions due to
some complaint about the guidelines. That's BS and a bad excuse IMHO.
I've put in an article from me about things happening in my life. Hey,
we all have a life and we are all members of the Fidonet community.
Write something! If nothing else, when you submit articles, it just
might shut me up since the Fidonews will have submissions and I won't
have to write so much. :-))

Fidonet's Favorite Things
By Frank Vest
Inspired by a Sysop in a Fidonet Echo
To the tune of "My Favorite Things"
Flame wars and Net wars no one is forgiven
Stopping at nothing is how we are driven
Wild accusations that hurt what we love
Hey wait a minute I forgot my glove
Start out with a message designed to do damage
Finish with a statement that's born of pure spamage
Twist all the words to fit what you think
That's how you manage to make Fido sink
When the Nodes drop,
When the Nets stop,
We all get together to lay on the blame
Then we don't feel so bad.
Tell all the Sysops your views about P4
That's the best way to start up a Zone war
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 15 23 Jul 2001
What does it matter what others may think
They really need to go see a shrink
When you are proved wrong never admit it
Swear that the others simply don't get it
Puff up and cough up and spew up old things
It doesn't matter, it has a good ring
When the mail stops,
When the zones drop,
We'll all get together to lay on the blame
Then we won't feel so bad.
<clap> <clap>
<bowing humbly>
Thank you very much
For my next number.... No! Wait!! Not the flame throwers... Arrrgh!!

The Lord's Prayer for E-mail
I had been teaching my three-year old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord's
Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after me the
lines from the prayer. Finally, she decided to go solo. I listened
with pride as she carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end
of the prayer: "Lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver
us some E-mail. Amen! ! ."

FAUX PAS
submitted by
[email protected]
In the north of England lived a man, poorly educated, who made a large
fortune by selling his design for a bicycle chain. With this money he
set about realizing his childhood ambition to become a country squire.
He purchased a beautiful estate near the Scottish border, and
proceeded, with the help of some excellent servants, to live in a
manner none in his family had ever dreamed of.
Foremost of these servants was his butler, Jeeves, a well-educated man
who assisted his master in every way he could to better himself. The
master would often ask Jeeves for advice on how to handle a social
situation, or to explain a new term. One day when the master was
reading he called Jeeves in and asked, "Jeeves, what is this fox
pass?"
"Sir," replied Jeeves, "that would be 'faux pas.' I'll give you an
example. Do you remember recently when Lord and Lady Plushbottom
stayed for the weekend? And do you remember how on Sunday morning Lord
Plushbottom pricked his finger on a rose thorn? And do you further
remember how later, at breakfast, Lady Plushbottom asked her husband,
"Is your prick still throbbing, dear?", and you said "Christ!" and I
dropped the marmalade?
That, Sir, was a "faux pas."

Fishing
Two fellas are fishing in a boat under a bridge. One looks up and sees
a funeral procession starting across the bridge. He stands up, takes
off his cap, and bows his head. The procession crosses the bridge and
the man puts on his cap, picks up his rod and reel, and continues
fishing. The other guy says, "That was touching. I didn't know you had
it in you."
The first guy responds, "Well, I guess it was the thing to do - after
all, I was married to her for 40 years

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the -=_guidelines_=-:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
1. Put the title in two times. The first time should be with an *
before it and the second time, on a seperate line, without the *.
This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed
and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the
article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. (the only
real rule in this whole thing)
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

Details:
Software Reviews (Fido): Reviews of software for Fidonet and BBS.
Getting Technical: Tech articles about Fidonet. How-to and such.
Web Page Reviews: Reviews of Fidonet (maybe other) Related Web Pages.
FIDONEWS 18-30 Page 30 23 Jul 2001
General Articles: These don't seem to fit in other places.
Fidonet Current Events: Elections relating to Fidonet, new Nodes
coming in and other such articles.
Clean Jokes & Humor: Funny stories and jokes that are not vulgar.
Ascii Comix: Those wonderful Ascii Comics that we used to have in the
Fidonews.
From the *Cs: Letters from the *Cs about what is going on in Fidonet.
Rebuttals: Didn't like an article, want to say something in reply to
an article? Say it here
Guest Editorial: Don't let the Editor get all the glory. Write your
own editorial and submit it.
Advertise: Advertise your free Fidonet service, Fidonet event or
whatever to do with Fidonet that you offer. If you are a
Fidonet Service provider such as a "Fido<>Internet", Star
Hub or some other such service provider, we can arrange to
run your ad on a rotating basis. Ask the Editor.
Recipes: Recipes from Sysops, readers or interested parties.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
