The Case of the Disappearing ISSN from FidoNews
From: "Frank Robbins" <
[email protected]>
I was investigating the actual date of when FidoNews became under ISSN
1198-4589. As indicated, that was accomplished by then Editor Sylvia
Maxwell.
I queried Linda Houston, the Publisher Liaison, at ISSN at the Library
of Congress and she indicated by email that this ISSN is invalid. Her
email is forwarded at the end of this correspondence.
ISSN stands for International Standard Serial Number. The following
website is the US ISSN Center Home Page is located in Library of
Congress:
http://lcweb.loc.gov/issn/
This site also explains how to obtain a valid ISSN.
Serials are print or non-print publications issued in parts, usually
bearing issue numbers and/or dates. A serial is expected to continue
indefinitely. Serials include magazines, newspapers, annuals (such as
reports, yearbooks, and directories), journals, memoirs, proceedings,
transactions of societies, and monographic series.
The ISSN should be as basic a part of a serial as the title. The
advantages of using it are abundant and the more the number is used
the more benefits will accrue.
ISSN provides a useful and economical method of communication between
publishers and suppliers, making trade distribution systems faster and
more efficient.
The ISSN results in accurate citing of serials by scholars,
researchers, abstracters, and librarians.
As a standard numeric identification code, the ISSN is eminently
suitable for computer use in fulfilling the need for file update and
linkage, retrieval, and transmittal of data.
ISSN is used in libraries for identifying titles, ordering and
checking in, and claiming serials.
The assignment of the ISSN is free in the U.S. and there is no charge
associated with its use.
Display and careful use of the ISSN will help in the world-wide effort
to make the number achieve its intended role as a valuable means of
identifying serials.
Historical review of the ISSN applied to FidoNews.

We're working on getting that ISSN number for the Snooze, and i'm
afraid the tag line is mutating again.

After looking at the recent issue of Practical Anarchy Online, i'm
not convinced it was the best thing for me to do to have gotten an
ISSN number for fidonews.

=========================================
There is no doubt that Sylvia Maxwell applied for the ISSN and
received the number that has been published on all FidoNews since 1117
(25-Apr-1994) up to the last time in FidoNews 1811 (12-Mar-2001). It
has been used for several years on FidoNews.
Warren Bonner seems to be the FidoNews Editor who removed it from the
newsletter and no information was made known in FidoNews that this
occurred. Don't know if any info was released in any Echoes.
Warren might have found out that the ISSN was invalid at the time he
removed it quitely from FidoNews. He would be the only person that
possibly could shed some light on this event.
It is quite strange that this ISSN was used over 7 years affixed to
FidoNews and then disappears without a trace or explanation!
So there you go, another piece of trivia in "The Tail That Wags The
Dog" saga.

A Father's Day Wish List
Since this is kind of a Father's Day Edition and there is a wish list
from the FOTI site and a memory from Ol'WDB, I figure I should have
something to say as well. :-))
I have been blessed with two children of my own, two step children
and three grandchildren with one on the way. :) With this in mind, and
some other things, here's my wish list;
I wish to not have to work for a living. (well, if you're gonna wish,
wish big :) )
I wish for more articles for the Fidonews. I mean, dang, my fingers
get hoarse from all this typing. :-)
I wish for Fidonet to become, once again, a large network of
hobbyists that enjoy this hobby.
I wish for all Zones in Fidonet to find peace with each other and
work together to build Fidonet back into the previous wish.
I wish health and well being to all.
I wish for all children to never have to be hungry or suffer again!
But most of all!
I wish for a time to come quickly where there will be no more war,
hate, prejudice, pain and hunger.
To all of you, I wish the best. May your way be as pleasant as you
desire.
Regards,
Frank

Interview with Vlad Hrusca (Region 53 Coordinator)
By: Ene Iulian as Editor (2:531/3)
Marius Alan (2:531/2)
Translated by 2:531/103
Translation corrected by the Fidonews Editor for Publication
Used with permission from the Region 53 Newsletter
Q: Describe yourself, please.
A: I'm 25 (on June, 2 will be 26), classic sysop, night animal ;)
Programmer, security engineer, etc. My hobbies are computer, roads...
Now - divorced with no children... Maybe I'll find somebody here ;)
Q: I know you are from the xUSSR, why did you come to Romania ?
A: Oh, It's a long story. My mother was born here, and I haven't work
in xUSSR...
Q: How long have you been a FidoNet member?
A: As a node - 1,5 year;) But I was a BBS off-line reader, point, BBS
sysop... In FidoNet for 10-11 years. It's my life and I can't live
without this network;).
Q: Why did you decide to make the region alive?
A: It's a complicated question. The Region must be alive! if you're
too lazy to do this, somebody must do this work. Why not me? If I
can... FidoNet is a great network, all my friends are from FidoNet,
can I do this simple thing for my region and for country? FidoNet is
not only a network, not only a way to communicate! It is a society! A
world with people, with problems, with happiness, with friends and
enemies. I can't support the idea that Romania is dead.
Q: You introduced in our fidonet life many new things, is it your
invention?
A: Nope;) About friday's meetings - it's russian tradition. To meet
friends. It's not bad. About mail via SMS - it was Ukrainian project.
My idea was only, maybe, the internet bbs' network;) But I think I'm
not the first;).
Q: What do you mean 'classic sysop'?
A: It's simple - something from xUSSR... Red eyes, beer, computers in
the mind, thinking about Windows reinstall when watching porno movie,
etc. (some of them is a joke).
Q: What plans do you have as RC?
FIDONEWS 18-24 Page 7 11 Jun 2001
A: It's my first experience as a FidoNet RC... My plans... To work, to
do all I can for our region. This Region will be alive!
So, I think our region has no way to die.
Vlad Hrusca (Region 53 Coordinator) was interviewed by Ene Iulian.
Thanks to Vlad Hrusca for his patience and time accorded.

-=+ FATHER'S DAY +=-
[email protected]
Father's Day
In 1909, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington, wanted fathers to be
honored with a special day just like Mother's Day. Sonora's mother
died in childbirth and her father raised the family on his own.
Because of Sonora's efforts, the first Father's Day was celebrated in
Spokane on June 19, 1910 according to records.
In 1972 Richard Nixon officially declared the third Sunday of June as
Father's Day.
I looked this information up as I wanted to establish firstly, that it
is a real dedicated day and not just a folklore tradition. I found
that the latest official recognition of this day that honors fathers,
was in a declaration from the White House by president William J
Clinton in June of 1999.
Father's Day having been established without a doubt as to it's
authenticity, I wish to remind all of my Fido friends to remember
their fathers on the third Sunday of this month. How you remember them
of course is up to you individually. As for me, I remember my daddy
as the most strict, stern, straight, honest, parent you can imagine;
but with a warm, long suffering, patient, loving benevolence, topped
with a keen dry sense of humor. You know the type, after he tells a
joke... you "get it" in about a minute, then fall over laughing. He
had to have a good sense of humor to weather the great depression and
work for Santa Fe Rail Road for fifty cents a day as a switchman to
feed his family in 1929, haul mail for the US government in 1930 to
earn enough to start a dairy farm. That dairy drew to 75 "milking"
cows, which had to be milked twice a day seven days a week. Just
imagine the devotion and determination that alone took! Yes, myself
and my three brothers worked side him helping with the many chores and
there were many! By the time I was sixteen, I thought he was the
strictest, meanest man on earth. At seventeen and a half I enlisted
(May 1, 1943) in World War II to get away from that dairy farm life,
and was convinced, In my mind, that my daddy was too dumb to learn
anything else from me. After three years + in the North Atlantic
Campaign to eradicate the Nazi and their U-Boats the war was won. I
came home. For a few evenings I would sit on the old front porch
after dinner, and daddy would be sitting by my side... we talked, as
never before. He listened and replied. By the end of the week I
thought my daddy was the wisest man I ever knew! How he learned so
much in three + years was amazing! 8^)
No one ever wrote anything about my dad. So I take this opportunity
with your permission, to honor my daddy. He died, (1964), of a heat
stroke painting the Church house he was an Elder of for many years.
FIDONEWS 18-24 Page 9 11 Jun 2001
I didn't realize the depth of his love for his family, his Church, his
God until I was raising six children of my own! Love your daddy if he
is living, and love his memory if he has passed on to Glory.

EDITOR'S CORNER

Editor is AWL
No, that doesn't mean I'm a sharp pointed tool for punching holes in
stuff. AWL = Absent With Leave :)
The wife and I had some vacation time and we've spent the last week
playing in genealogy. We took a couple of day trips to places of
genealogical interest to us, did some research and took some pictures.
I've spent the rest of the week trying to figure out how it all fits
into the genealogy of the family.
Since I've been sort of on vacation, I haven't done much with the
Fidonews. I've read my mail when I could and answered some mail, but
that's about it.
I do have one little thing that keeps coming back to bite me:
It seems that there are some that think I'm real hard on the rules
for submissions. True, I would like to have the format followed to the
letter and everything be perfect, but really.... I'm not that bad.
I'll fix, or try to fix, problems with submissions in regards to
format. Most of the stuff that comes in will have problems. It's
really hard to write a perfectly formatted article and I realize this.
I know that I sound real "hard nosed" about submissions and stuff and
I figured out that I'm not the Moderator type and turned that over to
someone else, but gee, I'm not really that bad.
Please, don't judge me by my bark. :-)
Regards,
Frank

HUMOR IN A FIDO VEIN
=================================================================
Dr. Seuss Writes Technical Documentation Again for
the FidoNet Technical Standards Committee (FTSC)
================================================
Original by: Gene Ziegler
http://users.ntplx.net/~dmiller/fstuff/seuss.htm
Title adapted to FidoNet by Frank Robbins
[email protected]
Here's an easy game to play.
Here's an easy thing to say:
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash,
Then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!
You can't say this?
What a shame, Sir!
We'll find you
Another game sir.
If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel on another protocol,
That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!
When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk,
And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk,
Then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

Children's Church Humor

After the christening of his baby brother in
church, Little Johnny sobbed all the way home in the
back seat of the car. His father asked him three times
what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That
preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian
home, and I want to stay with you guys".

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the guidelines:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
1. Put the title in two time. The first time should be with an *
before it and the second time without the *. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index
and the other one will remain and show what the article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted.
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name..

If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
