Memorial Day in the U.S.A.
Monday, May, 28 is Memorial Day in the U.S.A. On this day, we
remember the men and women that have served our country and given
their life in that service.
It's a solemn day, but a good day, for it reminds us that what we
have today was long in coming and high on cost. We should never forget
that!
It might not mean much to people in other Zones or Countries that the
service men and women of the U.S. gave their life for their country,
but you have had such men and women too. They gave all when asked
without a second thought.
As a fellow human being, I'd like to invite all of you in all Zones,
Nations and countries of Fidonet to join in a silent prayer of thanks
to all those people that gave all in the service of their country.
<moment of silence>
Thank you,
Frank Vest - Fidonews Editor and fellow Human being

The Fidonews Banner
Maybe you did and maybe you didn't notice the change in the Fidonews
Banner... You know, that part with the dog and information? Aww...
come on.. You saw it, didn't you?? :-)
Ok, I started looking at back issues of the Fidonews (you people have
got to stop pointing me at stuff like that :) and found that there
were several Fidonews Banners used over the years.
Here is the first one from Volume 1, Number 1:
Volume 1, Number 1 1 Dec 84

+----------------------------------------------------------+
No, I'm not going to post every change in the Fidonews Banner that
has been. :)
I do think that it is interesting that the Banner has been changed.
Being that I'm not one of the original Nodes in Fidonet and my
attention isn't generally that great, I didn't notice the changes
until I was pointed at the archives of the Fidonews in regards to that
story by Tom Jennings in the Fidonews that was removed by a hub due to
content.
I'm not going to suggest that every Editor change the Fidonews Banner
or that it should be changed. I really don't know why the changes took
place either. Maybe someone with more history could answer that
question.
If you look at that first Banner above, you'll notice that it is
simple. Computers were simple in that day.
There isn't much information in the Banner. There wasn't much to tell
back then. Remember that Fidonet and Fidonews were just beginning and
were small.
There is the Dog and a bowl. The words "Fidonews" and a few words
telling that it is the Fido and Fidonet User Group Newsletter. Well...
that's what it is.
FIDONEWS 18-22 Page 4 28 May 2001
Now, as time goes along, the Banner changed as Fidonet changed. So,
here's my reason for the change and what it means to me only;
Fidonet is growing. You might think I'm crazy, but we are moving into
the Internet and doing so much more than we did just a few very short
year ago. Think of the way computers have advanced. Think of how
Fidonet is struggling to keep up. Sure, we're behind in many ways, but
for a hobby, we aren't doing that bad. :) In this light, a change
seemed in order.
The new banner as I see it;
Computers talk now. Some even understand speech to some degree.
The Dog "talks" now. Notice the "bubble" that encloses the wording
above the dog. It's much like the "bubble" that you read in many
comics and advertising.
The "Copyright" has been changed to reflect that it is a US
copyright. I'm not going to get into that and you can read it however
you wish.
The bowl??
Well, I liked the old dog with the bowl and decided to bring back some
of the past. We move forward by learning from, respect of, and looking
back on where we started from.
The word "EDITOR" on the bowl??
Sometimes I feel like I'm just so much food for Fidonet. Have you ever
felt that way? :-)
Anyway, there you have it. A story told and changes made. I hope the
story is a positive one.
Regards,
Frank - Fidonews Editor and a meal. :)

INTERVIEWS
=================================================================
Interview with Scott Jibben of Jibben Software
By Frank Vest
As Editor of the Fidonews, a publication of the Fidonet mail network,
I'm trying to interview various Authors of BBS related programs and
other software for the Fidonews.
With your permission, I'd like an E-Mail address and Web page, if
available, to publish in the Fidonews.
Q: Tell us a little about Scott. Just who are you? :)
I don't do much with the BBS anymore. I've been consulting for
database enabled web sites using Cold Fusion since I got out of the
BBS market. My software is essentially freeware now. I give out keys
to anyone who asks for them. Someday I will produce versions that
don't need keys (one of the packages is already in this state). If
the demand gets too high to produce free keys, I'll convert these
doors more quickly or I'll just put out public keys that anyone can
use.
Q: What got you first interested in BBS?
I started using BBS when 2400 baud modems where the affordable option.
9600 baud was just getting introduced but the cost was prohibitive. I
suppose that this would be back around 1987 or so. I started a BBS
with my friend, Travis Carter, called The Warehouse in 1990 or 1991.
It had just about everything and quickly went from a 2-line system to
a 10-line system. Travis then quit the BBS to pursue a new
opportunity, US Internet. US Internet is one of the largest regional
Internet ISP's in our area (www.usinternet.com). Travis turned over
the BBS to me. The BBS market kept shrinking. At first I dropped to
six lines, then three. Finally, it was simply not cost effective to
keep a BBS running for only about 100 people.
Q: How long have you been programming?
I have been programming in one form or another since about 1982.
Q: What prompted you to begin writing Doors and other utilities?
I saw doors as an opportunity to write games that I wouldn't have been
able to publish commercially against Sierra On-Line and Origin
Systems. It was really fun to figure out how to squeeze a full
dungeon that was similar to Wizardry into about 400K of memory and
support multiple users and inter-node combat.
Q: What do you see as the strong points of your programs? Give us a
quick review.
FIDONEWS 18-22 Page 6 28 May 2001
I tried to make my doors be multi-node friendly so that you could have
real inter-node chat and combat. In Mines of Gorr, I still believe
that I have some of the best ANSI graphics for a D&D door available.
FYI, these were all drawn by a fellow named David Cates from Arizona
on a voluntary basis.
Q: Where do you see door games going in the future?
Well, I haven't followed door games that much in the last few years.
The days of BBS making large amounts of money are gone. Almost all of
the large BBS systems that I used to like playing with/on are either
gone or have moved entirely over to be an ISP. So, the BBS market and
doors will revert back to the people who have the time to make door
games for fun and fame instead of money. My time has to be divided
between family and revenue so I don't see an opportunity for myself to
get back into the BBS door game market.
Q: Where do you see BBS systems going in the future?
I see them reverting back to the 'good old days' where the BBS was
maintained by the hobbyist. Since many of the door games are now free
to use and even many of the BBS software packages are free it isn't
that expensive to start a BBS. The real problem is getting users to
know you exist. Running a BBS for a profit will be difficult to do
unless you have a unique feature that no one else has and it is
something that people want. Another good option is to get a DSL
connection and wire the BBS to the Internet.
Q: Anything else you want to add or tell the readers?
I was amazed at how quickly the BBS market shrank with the emergence
of the Internet. So, don't get into a BBS with the idea that you'll
make tons of money via subscriptions. Go into it with the full
realization that the SysOp will fund most, if not all of the costs.
If you don't want to run it as a hobby then perhaps you should find
something else to do. The BBS has come full circle and is back at the
hobbyist level. Enjoy the relationships that you start and build
through a BBS because that is now the reward of running one.
If you want to use my doors to help attract people to your BBS, be my
guest! You can download them at

Fidonews' Need For Roving Reporters
[email protected]
Frank has been doing a real fine job with what he has to work with,
with respect to articles received by you roving reporters. Yes each of
you are a roving reporter, that scan the echoes and enjoy fidonews to
catch up on what's going on through out this and other zones. And my
friend is somewhat dismayed that 99% of you have offered nothing! I
said, "perhaps I could give them a nudge..!?!"
Frank replied, "Naaah, that would only embarrass them. I never mean to
do that! The fidonews articles should come in freely from the many
prolific writers of their own free will and spirit of contributions".
I said, "I'm sure they don't mean to be insensitive... you know how
fidoneters are, getting the cookie out of the cookie jar is more
important than putting a nickels worth of time in return for the
cookie, or the lid back on the cookie jar".
Frank just grinned and shrugged the doubts in his mind off for the
moment and wished me and family a happy Memorial holiday.
I would like to extend that wish to all of you also, and please try to
assist your fidonews editor with an article, poem, recipe, or juicy
tidbit.
This is a plea to ALL zones, you echo bitch that everything is about
zone one in the Snooze, well, here is a golden opportunity to give
input about your own zones... send in election news, or news of sysops
who have rendered outstanding assistance to new comers, or what you
would like to see included in the weekly news.
Well gotta put a new 3-way switch on the dinning room fan, chain broke
out of old switch, a sealed unit, so hafta replace. Then finish repair
on 25" TV master Bd-rm. I think there is always two or more things to
fix at any given moment in this household!

it's difficult these days to make both ends meat." 8^)

CLASSIFIED ADS
=================================================================
Rotating ads
As a service of the Fidonews, I am prepared to offer rotating ads for
those that provide services to Fidonet such as Mail Hubs, Gateways,
Fidonet via Internet and such.
How this works:
1. Create an ad following the guidelines for the Fidonews.
2. Keep it short and to the point.
3. Put contact and other needed information in the ad.
4. Send it to Frank Vest as a file attach.
A. E-Mail "
[email protected]
B. Netmail "Frank Vest - 1:124/6308
I will put the ad in a pool and use a program each week to
automatically rotate the ads into the Fidonews.
Please! If you stop offering service or need to change your ad,
contact me! This is very important to keep the ads current.
I'm doing this on a trial basis. If it gets to be a problem, I will
have to discontinue the service. I can make no promise of how often
your ad will be in the Fidonews. This will depend on how many ads I
have to rotate through.
As always in Fidonet, I make no guaranties. :)

[email protected] will automatically route to the
appropriate individual's email. Anyone in this list will
also receive routed notice of this feature. In my case, it
would still be
[email protected], but you get the idea.
Also, as information is provided to me, I will be adding a
latency field to each node, which is defined as the maximum
time between when the message is received, and when it is
sent on to other nodes, or available to be sent onward,
defined in minutes. A latency of ! implies that there is an
immediate response, and an attempt to deliver immediately
after processing, or a "MinuteMail System", as it were.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are the guidelines:
No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces.
No right or left margins.
Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain
typewriter, don't use it.
Put a title to the article and your name.
1. Put the title in two time. The first time should be with an *
before it and the second time without the *. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index
and the other one will remain and show what the article is about.
Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted.
Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00
hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the
U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear
in the next Fidonews.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name..

FIDONEWS 18-22 Page 19 28 May 2001
Fidonet Current Events: Elections relating to Fidonet, new Nodes
coming in and other such articles.
Clean Jokes & Humor: Funny stories and jokes that are not vulgar.
Ascii Comix: Those wonderful Ascii Comics that we used to have in the
Fidonews.
From the *Cs: Letters from the *Cs about what is going on in Fidonet.
Rebuttals: Didn't like an article, want to say something in reply to
an article? Say it here
Guest Editorial: Don't let the Editor get all the glory. Write your
own editorial and submit it.
Advertise: Advertise your free Fidonet service, Fidonet event or
whatever to do with Fidonet that you offer. If you are a
Fidonet Service provider such as a "Fido<>Internet", Star
Hub or some other such service provider, we can arrange to
run your ad on a rotating basis. Ask the Editor.
Recipes: Recipes from Sysops, readers or interested parties.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem.
