CHAT WITH THE EDITOR
=================================================================
Okay fido folks, now is the time to become involved in the restoration
of fidonet policy. You have talked, cried, moaned and bitched about
it in echoes from "hell to breakfast" in past ten or so years. The
"ignore it completely" group cannot be right as that would leave us
with no discipline and structure. That would leave us like a dead
Christmas tree with node (ornaments) falling like autumn leaves. That
just must not come to be.
The "modify parts of it" group, (in my mind), have the best
opportunity right now to start some real constructive dialog. The
first thing in the business world would be to find a qualified person
to "Chair" the project and define it for all to be able to see a way
to reconstruct.
Also, that Chairperson could simultaneously develop a Zone One policy
that would dovetail and fit perfectly with the newly reconstructed
policy. All buildings, laws, policies, etc. need maintenance and
reconstruction after a decade of service; they too need service, a new
coat of paint after a good retrofit.
So that your efforts to contribute to this effort are visible to all,
thus helping others with their ideas and phraseology, I propose to
open a "Policy Reconstruction" section of Fidonews in future weekly
issues, for all to see submittals. All submittals would be addressed
to the Chairperson, and CC'd to editor at 1:1/23 or
[email protected] for the "PR section". This function of the
Snooze may help negate duplications and reflect changes already
proposed, as well as adding new proposals.
Since any changes to policy must be ratified by all Zones, and because
we are working in zone one, would not it be prudent for the Z1C to
appoint that "Chair-person"? Until that is accomplished in some
manner, there is no starting place. I urge all to read carefully
Frank's `Guest Editorial' this week. In fact I think Frank would be
an excellent Chairman!

Subject: Article
It's a Zone Policy (or is it?)
By Frank Vest
The Echo is FIDOPOLS and the subject is a Zone Policy for Zone 1. Now,
I'm not the brightest kid on the block or anything like that, but I
have to wonder...
It would seem that an effort to create a Zone Policy would need a
format or outline. I've seen none of this so far. There has been some
proposals to take a Policy from other Regions or places and modify
that to fit in a Zone Policy. There's even been a proposal to modify
the Election "Rules" that were used in the previous Z1C Election and
make the Election portion of the Zone Policy out of them.
This begs the question from me of "How can there be progress on a
Policy if there is no format, outline, direction or starting place?".
It would seem that at least one of these need be present to proceed.
So far, I've seen discussion of P4. The effect of P4 on a Zone Policy.
Can there be a Zone Policy under P4. Removing P4. Re-writing or
creating a new P4. and some other discussion. Still, nothing that
resembles an outline for a Policy. Not even an outline or starting
place for a set of "Guidelines" for the Zone Policy.
What is sad as well is that I see only a few people posting in the
Echo. The few that are posting appear to represent the right and left
wing with little middle ground. Now, that paints a pretty bleak
picture, so let me say this. Those that are there seem to be willing
to compromise and work together towards a goal "IF" they had a goal,
starting place or some direction to work towards.
So, where is this going? Are the Nodes in Zone 1 going to get with
this Zone Policy writing, or is it just another area for the right and
left wings to battle over who's right and who's wrong? Without some
kind of outline of subjects to be discussed and worked on, this is
like playing basketball with 5+ balls. Which one do you run with?
Which one do you dribble now? Which goal should you be at to score?
Maybe we need a place for these sides to do battle in order to keep
them pacified and out of the hair of those that do the job of making
Fidonet work and function? I don't know. I wonder if the FIDOPOLS echo
is the place for this pacification? Again, I don't know. If this be
the case, I'm happy to give the echo to them and move on. I do know
that from what I see, and assuming that the FIDOPOLS Echo is for the
serious effort of writing something, "The wheels are spinning, but the
car ain't moving".
IMHO, Zone 1 needs to decide what this effort is for... Is it a Zone
FIDONEWS 18-07 Page 4 12 Feb 2001
Policy? Is it a Fidonet (P4 replacement) Policy? _THEN_, in order to
start, decide *Why* is this being written and *What* will it do. Write
this down at the top of the "beta" document. Then start with P4 and go
section by section through it. Decide what needs to be explained or
clarified for a Zone Policy or what need to be changed for a Fidonet
(P4 replacement) Policy.

Subject: RV: FidoNet In South America.
Hi
I want to submit my article about the topic of being on an area where
FidoNet and BBSing is not very common and how can us sysops make our
systems more attractive to people. Your replies appreciated.
Hi!
I'm sort of a re-new Sysop can i call it because i had my BBS some
years ago but a crash on my Hard Disk made me quit it but now i'm back
on track, but when i restarted it surprised me the way things are
being done now. Telnet, Email, WebBBS, humm two years out and you're a
dumb oldie.
What i want to say is that here in Colombia as you may see on you fido
Nodelist (4:93/0, 4:930/0, 1) i'm the only SysOp around and even
though people is very unfamiliar with this kind of systems. they do
not know what TELNET or a BBS is unless they're studying computers or
Network management.
When i started my BBS in early 1995, Fido in South America was almost
dead and now it's even more, we don't even appear on www.fidonet.org
home page, what's going on?. When i asked for my node number i was
very enthusiastic about this and users were a few but they were
interested and called my system frequently.
Where i want to get with this is to make you think or better make US
think about how to keep our network from being left apart or letting
it die. It's true that Internet stole us many of our users and has
lots more of stuff you know Pictures, Fancy graphics, those millions
of programs, you know i personally used i to get my BBS software and
more but i still think a BBS is a more personal way to interact with
people and and there are many features that we can make available at
our systems and as Internet is so useful, let's get it to work for us,
we can make our systems available at a web page with that nasty JAVA
plug in (i haven't been able to do so yet, any help?) any many more
features that we can use as links to our systems, and more.
Please make this thoughts available to all of your users and yourself.
Think about this and give us sysops ideas on how to keep our beloved
network alive.
I expect all your comments at the FIDONEWS Echo or:

Ok aqui va "Here it goes"
(yo no lo he podido
escribanlos a
[email protected],
[email protected] netmail en
4:930/1, ahhh y lo olvidaba en telnet://skynetbbs.thebbs.org y
porfavor no olviden visitar mi pagina en Internet en el sitio
skynetbbs.8m.com.

Colombia.

Hi ya there All!
Well unfortunately there's no Spanish edition of Fidonews for Us
sysops that are in countries where English is note very common. So i'd
like to coment about a Spanish Edition FidoNews for the Latin
community, and specially for Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and the
rgion i'm NC Colombia the Newest region of Fidonet though here in
South America people are not very familiar or used to BBSing and our
ZC is not very Intrested on providing leadership in the Zone.
i'd like to submit my name as the new ZC or what can we do to make
Luis who i think is tired of Fidonet, how do we help him?.
Thanks

hypodermics. Appendicitis was followed by tonsillectomy. These gaveway
to aphasia and hypertrophic cirrhosis. I completely lost my memory for

It's a Recipe, sort of
By Frank Vest
I've noticed Carol's recipes in the Snooze. I'm not going to try to
compete with her, but here's a little something that is better than
nothing. :)
There is a time when we are all single. In this time, fast-food was/is
probably our mainstay for nourishment. I went through it and it was ok
but I often wanted more. Burgers and Pizza only go so far. :)
Here we go:
Chili
Get prepared. If you dont already have it, go to the store and get the
following:
1 can - "Ranch Style Beans" 1 half pound hamburger meat
1 small onion Small container of chili powder
Crackers or Fritos(r) <optional>
In worst case, raid mom... that's what she's there for. :-))
Chop the onion into small pieces.
Now, in a skillet or whatever you have that will cook stuff on a
stove, brown the hamburger meat with the onion and chili powder to
taste. This isn't that hard, just turn the stove on, put the meat and
however much of the onion and chili powder (be easy with the chili
powder, a little goes a long way) you think you'll want in the pan and
stir with a fork till it's in small bits and not red anymore. Drain
the grease off of it into whatever container you have that you will
throw away.
Next, open the beans and pour them into the pan with the meat and
onion. Get a bigger pan if you need. Fill the can with water about
half way and swish it to get the rest of the sauce dissolved. Put that
in the pan as well. (just the contents of the can, not the can :)
Now, heat this whole mess up while stirring. You might need to add
some water to thin it out a little. If you get too much water, cook it
a little while till the water evaporates. Be careful to not burn the
stuff by getting the heat too high. Keep it stirred.
You can eat this straight, put it over the "Fritos(r), crackers or
however you like.
FIDONEWS 18-07 Page 11 12 Feb 2001
If it's not good, blame mom for not asking you over for dinner. :)

Here are both. Remind me next month to start with 'Sashimi Bass

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
Title: Magic Leeks!
Categories: Appetizers, Diabetic, Low-fat, Vegetables, Xxcarol
Yield: 6 Servings
2 ea Whole bunches of leeks
1 tb Soy sauce (shoyu)
1 tb Worstershire sauce
Olive oil, light drizzle
1 ts Black pepper
1 ts Salt
Ok, chop them washed leeks up. Get all the dirt out. Now mix the
seasonings (sans oil) and put that in a reclosable baggie. Shake'em
up and down (or side to side if you prefer). Add a drizzle of olive
oil to a pan and either fry them tender, or bake at 350 degrees for 20
mins. Dont let them get cold or the magic leeks out!
Suitable as a side dish to anything that would be complemented by
onions. Nice little 'knosh' all by themselves on a late night for a
dieter.

GETTING TECHNICAL

Re: Fidonews Submission
----------------------------------------------------------------------
10 February 2001
FAQ on IP Connectivity Nodelistings
Reference: FTS-5001.001 and FTS-5000.001
Written with assistance from David Hallford,
FTSC Nodelist working group member
Let me first smile and say I'm not re-writing the Fidonet
Technical Standards, but merely trying to assist with
questions I've seen on implementation of them. Sometimes,
they just aren't as understandable as the Fidonet Technical
Standards Committee intended.
Lets start with the basics. The nodelist has a specific
format. You can't vary off that in some aspects or it will
fail to process. That can cause a node, hub segment, net
segment, region, or even a whole Zone to fail to process
depending on where it fails. YIKES!! Lets not go there ok?
The first field of interest for a sysop with IP
connectivity, is the 3rd one where the BBSname is
traditionally entered. For an IP node, this is the 'system
address' space. You list it but once here in the preferred
mode if at all possible. You can also list the IP address
or an email address if that's preferred.
The problem for most NC's is that it's never really 'clear'
how the samples and flags work in conjunction. Thats
probably because there are many variations.
Below is a sample for BINKP/TELNET/FTP type entries.
Sample:
,100,
[email protected],Virgina_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger,
(etc).
In that case,
[email protected] is a `DNS lookup' address
for the IP number.
If the site has a POTS line as well, list it as normal. If
they do not, use -Unpublished- for the phone field, mark
them PVT, and enter 300 for the baud rate. Among the flags,
enter those which are applicable, omitting those that do not
apply.
FIDONEWS 18-07 Page 14 12 Feb 2001
Sample:
(ION)
,300,CM,IBN,ITN,IFT
(With POTS and IP)
,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,VFC,IBN,ITN,IFT
While I dont see anyone using it, I could also just plug in
the IP address there if it was STATIC.
Sample:
,100,24.0.0.1,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc)
Although controversial at this time, a static IP address can
also be put in the phone number field by replacing the "."
with a "-" and prefacing it with 000.
Sample:
,100,Shenk's_Express,Virginia_Beach_VA,
Carol_Shenkenberger,000-24-0-0-1,300,
The other flags would be the same. Note, do NOT use this if
the IP address isnt static! Even the 'gee seldom changes'
folks should use the DNS version.
If I used just email attachments, I'd enter my email
address instead.
Sample:
,100,
[email protected],Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger,
(etc).
Then add the email version IP flags which fit my setup.
Sample:
(ION)
,300,CM,ITX,IUC,IMI
(With POTS and IP)
,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,VFC,ITX,IUC,IMI
Now lets say you do both methods. FTP or variation, and
email attachment type and want to list both. It can be done.
Be careful on field length as each flag must be 32
characters max including the flag! The total line must be
157 characters or less.
Sample:
,100,
[email protected],Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger,
1-757-486-3064,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,IFT,ITX:
[email protected]
Note that on the IFT portion I did not need to relist the
FIDONEWS 18-07 Page 15 12 Feb 2001
address. If '
[email protected]' resolved to an IP address
also capable of BINKP, I would add IBN. If it also
connected to TELNET, I'd add ITN. Only ITX (email
attachment TransX) required additional information be
listed.
I hope this helps pull things together for people!

POET'S CORNER
=================================================================
IT COULDN'T BE DONE
Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say no till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.
Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it";
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

MYSELF
I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand, with the setting sun,
And hate myself for things I have done.
I don't want to keep on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about my self,
And fool myself, as I come and go,
Into thinking that nobody else will know
The kind of a man I really am;
I don't want to dress up myself in sham.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men's respect;
FIDONEWS 18-07 Page 17 12 Feb 2001
But here in the struggle for fame and pelf
I want to be able to like myself.
I don't want to look at myself and know
That I'm bluster and bluff and empty show.
I can never hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see;
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself, and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience free.

HUMOR
=================================================================
A man decided to get his wife a dozen roses and take them home to her
after work. The minute he opened the door, his wife screamed, "This
is the worst day that I have ever had in my entire life! The kids
have been terrible. They spilled the dog dish, ran water over in the
bathtub, got in a food fight, hid my slippers, put soap flakes in the
spa, broke off a sprinkler head making a geyser into the open car
window, put my ink pad on my computer seat where I sat on it, strewed
my piano sheet music all over the music room, sucked up the fireplace
hot embers into the vacuum cleaner which caught fire, then knocked
down the wood pile putting out the fire, the fire alarms are screaming
AND NOW YOU'VE GOT THE NERVE TO COME HOME DRUNK!"

A Russian cosmonaut has an emergency during his reentry
into earth's atmosphere and his space craft crash lands in
the Australian bush, way out in the middle of nowhere.
After what seems like an eternity, he wakes up in a bush hospital
clinic, very rustic, dirty, with foul smells and he is really
bandaged from head to foot. He sees a very large, somewhat
gruff looking nurse approaching him as he lay in his cot.
"Did I come here to die?" he says with a deep sense of
resignation and fear.
"No," the Aussie nurse replies, "You came here yesterdie.

A dietitian was once addressing a large audience in Chicago:
"The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most
of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks erode
your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. Vegetables can
be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by
the germs in our drinking water.
"But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all -- and we
all have, or will at some point, eat it. "Can anyone here tell me what
food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after
eating it?"
A 75-year-old man in the front row stood up and said, "Wedding cake."

A dad walks into a market followed by his ten-year-old son. The kid
is spinning a 25 cent piece in the air and catching it between his
teeth.
As they walk through the market, someone bumps into the boy at
just the wrong moment and the coin goes straight into his mouth and
lodges in his throat. He immediately starts choking, going blue in
the face, and Dad starts panicking, shouting for help.
A well dressed middle-aged, moderately attractive but serious
woman in a blue business suit is sitting at a coffee bar in the market
reading her newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee.
At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup
down on the saucer, neatly folds her newspaper and places it on the
counter.
Then she gets up from her seat and makes her unhurried way across
the market.
Reaching the boy, the woman carefully takes hold of the boy's
testicles and squeezes gently at first and then ever more firmly.
After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the 25
cent piece, which the woman deftly catches in her free hand.
Releasing the boy, the woman hands the coin to the father and
walks back to her seat in the coffee bar without saying a word. As
soon as he is sure
that his son has suffered no lasting ill-effects, the father
rushes over to the woman and starts effusively thanking her saying,
"I've never seen anybody do anything like that -- it was fantastic.
Are you a doctor?"
"Good heavens, no," the woman replies. "I'm a divorce attorney."

Also, as information is provided to me, I will be adding a
latency field to each node, which is defined as the maximum
time between when the message is received, and when it is
sent on to other nodes, or available to be sent onward,
defined in minutes. A latency of ! implies that there is an
immediate response, and an attempt to deliver immediately
after processing, or a "MinuteMail System", as it were.
