Subject: FidoNet In South America. Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 11:02:40
From: "David Gonzalez" <
[email protected]>
To:<
[email protected]>
Hi
I want to submit my article about the topic of being on an area where
FidoNet and BBSing is not very common and how can us sysops make our
systems more attractive to people.
Hi!
I'm sort of a re-new sysop can I call it because I had my BBS some
years ago but a crash on my Hard Disk made me quit, it but now I'm
back on track, but when I restarted it surprised me the way things are
being done now. Telnet, Email, WebBBS, humm two years out and you're a
dumb oldie.
What I want to say is that here in Colombia as you may see on you fido
Nodelist (4:93/0, 4:930/0, 1) I'm the only SysOp around and even
though people is very unfamiliar with this kind of systems. they do
not know what TELNET or a BBS is unless they're studying computers or
Network management.
When I started my BBS in early 1995, Fido in South America was almost
dead and now it's even more, we don't even appear on www.fidonet.org
home page, what's going on?. When I asked for my node number I was
very enthusiastic about this and users were a few but they were
interested and called my system frequently.
Where I want to get with this is to make you think or better make US
think about how to keep our network from being left apart or letting
it die. it's true that Internet stole many of our users and has lots
more of stuff you know Pictures, Fancy graphics, those millions of
programs, you know I personally used 1 to get my BBS software and more
but I still think a BBS is a more personal way to interact with people
and and there are many features that we can make available at our
systems and as Internet is so useful, let's get it to work for us, we
can make our systems available at a web page with that nasty JAVA plug
in (I haven't been able to do so yet, any help?) and many more
features that we can use as links to our systems, and more.
Please make this thoughts available to all of your users and yourself
think about this and give us sysops ideas on how to keep our beloved
network alive.
I expect all your comments at the FIDONEWS Echo or:
Please feel free to contact and me and _DO_ so, via e-mail at
[email protected] or
[email protected] or net mail to 4:930/1

I apologize for losing the author's name of this submission.
(I could not find it in echo, net or email.)
Here in the north country, mOOse have been loyally posting to FiDoeNet
for many years now, despite being swamped with work running a
profitable Moose Factory or important businesses like Bullmoose Mines
or Moose Jaw Times.
Why?
Perhaps it's because FiDoe has always been friendly to four-legged
critters.
It is with horrour then that followers of the loyal order of mOOse
open a dog-eared copy of the recent FidoeNews 18:3 to find none less
than one of our illustrious FiDoe RC's promoting her recipe for four
pounds of roast venison - Canadian elk, moose or deer.
Like, take off, eh? The typical mOOse would much rather be safely home
in Moose Creek with a comfortable pair of antler warmers and a case of
cold Moosehead Beer than find themselves on someone's dinner table.
At least there's refuge for mOOse who would rather migrate northward
than become Carol's supper: MOOSECHAT, a Canadian humour echo for
noble mOOse!
MOOSECHAT is dedicated to equality for mOOse everywhere, including
chocolate mOOse, as well as liberty and justice for all.
MOOSECHAT is a shining beacon of freedom for mOOse everywhere, as well
as a handy way to contact key world leaders like Vlad-on-Mir Poutine
from Russia, Jean Cretin from the Great White North eh?, Saddam Insane
from Iraq and Chad from Florida. It gives mOOse time away from the rat
race.
It also provides valuable moose-related investment info from
organizations like Moose River Gold Mines, Elk Resources and John
Deere as well as sports coverage of key Senators players like Alexi
Ya$hin and Hillary Clinton.
In short, it allows the Canadian mOOse to, like, gronk farther and
louder.
Beauty, eh?

WB> Hi K!
My personal feelings exactly: I do not intend to stop posting in
Fidonews, I do not intend to stop the ASCII newsletter. I don't know
why you thought that.
KS> Because that's what the question sounded like.
WB> I am responding as editor to questions from sysops who want to
have access to improved versions that make use of their computers and
their abilities, and other languages with translation in English.
KS> HTML isn't really an "improved version"; it merely makes a "pretty
version" which isn't quite the same thing. The easiest solution to
this is to have a fidonews website, where you can read and download
the httml version, maybe a pdf version as well, and the ascii version,
along with archives of earlier issues. I might add if you're doing
html I recommend writing your own in a text editor - most html editors
are better than the hideously bloated Word for Windows html option,
but I've yet to find one I care for.
Meanwhile I'm all for other languages being involved, with
translations. One of the biggests nuisances about the Snooze is the
way almost nothing comes in from any zone but 1 and sometimes 2. 3 we
rarely hear from, 4 I find myself wondering if it still EXISTS,
similar for 5 and 6. Finding a way to translate this thing into other
languages might well stimulate submissions from people using same.
Theoretically this thing should append my sig with my site address,
but just in case it doesn't, I've got a site at
http://home.earthlink.net/~kayshapero/index.htm, with the net 102 site
at

FR> When are we going to take the giant step from ASCII only, to HTML?
MG> NEVER do away with ASCII.
ED> Guess I should have said,"to HTML a-l-s-o". I never meant to drop
ASCII; only give an option for those with better software for handling
photos and fonts a little more information.
FR> When are we going to branch out to two publications, one for ASCII
FR> and one for HTML.?
MG> Don't we already have that? Isn't that what www.fidonews.org is
all about? If you want, dress up the website a little, God knows it
could use it. Make the HTML display of the Fidonews a little nicer,
but don't change the basic ASCII format.
MG> I also think that the Fidonet websites that /do/ exist are not
maintained and promoted nearly enough on the Internet. We need some
committed individuals to do the legwork necessary to ensure there are
valid links between Fidonet related websites and Fidonet BBSes on the
internet, along with proper submissions to search engines. It should
be so that when someone types in "fidonet" in a search engine, a whole
slew of Fidonet-related websites would appear. That is just not
happening these days.
FR> Should the weekly fidonews be a BI-Monthly newsletter?
MG> No. When things are slow, there doesn't seem like there's much
news, but when something big happens, a bi-monthly publication would
contain old news about the incident by the time it came out.
FR> Should it be alternately ASCII and HTML? Or ASCII weekly, HTML
monthly?
MG> No, no and no! The ASCII format should remain unchanged as the
main Fidonews distribution, and the distribution of it should remain
as is. HTML should only be available from www.fidonews.org, for those
who want it, or perhaps the HTML versions could be distributed on
request via an e-mail mailing list.
FR> Should all sysops have the choice of which edition and format?
MG> As far as I'm concerned, we already do.
ED> You aren't ALL sysops. Others feel differently.
FIDONEWS 18-05 Page 8 29 Jan 2001
FR> Editor would like feedback on these questions for next issue. FR>
Send replies to address 1:1/23 or
[email protected] please. FR> We
need your input to make the Fidonews all it can be to all folks FR> in
fidoland.
MG> I think it's better to reply here, in public.
ED> Absolutely. That is the reason for this questionnaire in public
Fidonews echo, and represented in the publication. I thank you and
all others that participated on this issue. It is pretty clear that
folks with older machines without gigabyte hard drives want NO change.
And I promise as long as I am the editor, ASCII will be the first
format/protocol.
ED> Your and Anne Page's suggestions on the web page downloads for
those that would like a spicier version are good ideas, and only by
our talking about it can others see the merits of FidoNews in other
formats to attract more and more Internet users back to Fido.
Thanks again Michael, ED.

as well.
LA> On my part, it was part of a grander scheme that I'm still
coddling. The half-baked version is below.
PL> For all intents and purposes, a point that feeds over any kind of
internet method of distribution is of no difference than an ION node
when you look at it... and having a BBS was never a requirement to be
a FidoNet node.
LA> I still do things dial-up, from a DOS machine, so I don't know if
what I'm mulling is already in use. Roughly, I'm thinking that we
need software that, to an end user, will work like their favorite
browser -- fire it up and it goes to his/her ISP, links to an ION hub,
exchanges mail (net and echos), logs off and tosses the mail up onto
the local screen. FidoNews and nodediffs would be background
processes, unseen by the casual user.
Points are subject to the same rules as nodes, so the problems that
folks feared about linking the echos to the chaos of Usenet is
side-stepped. Become a nusance and your number gets yanked.
This does several things: It gives us many more potential members, it
puts Fido where the users are, it doesn't break the nodelist or create
a seperate Fido system, so we've got backwards compatability.
Traditional, low-tech nodes won't try to dial up an ION point, the
node would automagically know to send it to the bossnode. Bossnodes
would be the firewall against spam and would be responsible for
quickly cancelling any malignant points, making Fido attractive to
ordinary humans as a "cleaner" source of mail. ISPs would view it as
another mailing list, one that they wouldn't have to store their
user's mail for (Space would be a problem for the bossnodes, though.
Dunno how to address that). And we could add bells-n-whistles to the
ION side, graphics, what have you. They would be filtered out at the
gateways leaving clean ANSI texts.
But the really, really important thing is putting Fido where the
people are. They aren't dialing up BBSi ever again, so we can just
lock that fantasy away in our toyboxes. Private mailing lists exist
all over the Internet, we could promote this is a meta-mailing list.
Of course, this is just noodling. I'm not a programmer, I don't know
how to write such stuff. But some people in FidoLand _do_ and we can
stand around wringing our hands, or try to pretty Fido up, or we can
actually do something -- if we still have the critical mass of
tech-savvy folks needed.

FV> Ok, I'm gonna take a stab at this. Please forgive me if I'm off
the deep end here. :)
Some of what you are wanting is already being done in some ways. There
is a program called "Internet Rex" (IRex) that will transfer Fidonet
mail via the Internet E-Mail. One can feed a Node, Point, Hub, Net or
??? in this manner. IRex will do the mail runs via E-Mail and the
Point package will do the tossing and such.
I'm not a guru on this, but I will tell you this much... I run Dos
with Desqview on a 486 and I feed a Net in my area via Irex on this
Dos machine. Once I get Irex registered, I'll be able to feed up to
1000 systems (Nodes, points, Nets or ??). I gather newsgroups via the
Internet and gate them to my BBS and any systems under me that want
them via IRex. I can gate E-Mail to and from the Internet via IRex and
much more.
Some of what you are wanting can be done now. It would be a matter of
putting together a package that is pre-setup with the programs, batch
files and whatever is needed in it. The user plugs it in and goes.
I'm probably off base here, but is this close to what you are
wanting??

Frank

all I can do is think about it...

PL> I agree that Fido needs to be brought where the people are, but
totaly disagree that people will never BBS again. Even if it's just a
small circle of folks still calling various dial-up boards in their
areas, people still are calling... it is the "lazy SysOp" who will
have no users, not BBSs as a whole... there are also quite a few
telnet boards that brag high usage, and even a "PAY for access" telnet
system (not in FidoNet) that is based in my local area that has no
less than 10 to 12 people online at any given time, 24 hours a day. Go
figure that one out.
PL> I feel that making FidoNet available in a neet package to those
NOT interested in BBS themselves however would be a fantastic breath
of life... I have seen a couple of point packages out there that with
a little modification would be ideal for this purpose.

tossed around and make it a working reality :)

Subject: Tradigy
George Bush is visiting an elementary school today and he visits one
of the classes (4th grade I believe). They are in the middle of a
discussion related to words and their meanings.
The teacher asks Mr. Bush if he would like to lead the class in the
discussion of the word, "tragedy."
So our illustrious leader asks the class for an example of a
"tragedy."
One little boy stands up and offers, "If my best friend, who lives
next door, is playing in the street and a car comes along and runs
him over, that would be a tragedy."
"No," says Bush, "that would be an accident."
A little girl raises her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children
drove off a cliff, killing everyone involved, that would be a
tragedy."
"I'm afraid not," explains Mr. Bush . "That's what we would call a
GREAT LOSS.
The room goes silent. No other children volunteer. Mr. Bush searches
the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a
tragedy?"
Finally, way in the back of the room, Li'l Johnny raises his hand. In
a quiet voice he says, "If Air Force One, carrying Mr. & Mrs. Bush,
was struck by a missile and blown up to smithereens, that would be a
tragedy.
"Fantastic," exclaims Bush, "that's right. Can you tell me WHY that
would be a tragedy?"
"Well," Li'l Johnny replies, "because it wouldn't be an accident, and
it certainly would be no great loss."

Subject: Longevity:
FIDONEWS 18-05 Page 15 29 Jan 2001
Humans are the longest-lived mammals and giant tortoises are the
longest-lived reptiles, sometimes living as long as 150 years. Among
birds, the record is held by turkey buzzards at 118 years. But
thick-shelled ocean clams called quahogs hold the top longevity
record among all animals. These slow-moving mollusks can live more
than 200 years.
Quahogs are burrowing clams that feed on microscopic life they strain
from the water. They use their fleshy foot to pull themselves under
the mud, then extend two long tubes up into the water.
Native to the North Atlantic Ocean, quahogs are in great demand as
food for people, and as a result, those found near shore seldom live
longer than 10 or 20 years. Like many other North Atlantic life
forms, populations of quahogs have been reduced greatly in some areas
due to overcollecting.
Quahogs can be made into very good clam chowder:

6 slices, paper-thin lemon
In a bowl, combine the milk, egg white, tabasco sauce, soy
sauce, cayenne pepper, white pepper, sage, thyme, majoram, and
the onion rings. Add the catfish fillets and refrigerate for
2 hours.
In a shallow dish, combine the cornmeal with salt and peppers,
to taste.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Remove the fillets from the milk mixture and dip into the
seasoned cornmeal. Shake off the excess cornmeal.
On a non-stick platter, place the coated fillets. Dip the
onion rings first in the milk mixture and then in the cornmeal.
Place the onion rings on top of fish.
Bake in the fish and onion rings in the preheated 400 degree F.
for 10 minutes. Turn the fish over and place a couple paper-thin
slices of lemon on each fillet. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes
longer. Remove and serve.

Errorlevel Method- FD 2.12 and below only 15AUG98
Adapted for Fidonews, 18Jan 2001
Hello! For those of you using FD2.12 and below, this method may be
easier to start with. It's basically one big batch file and you dont
have to pass off to other batch files.
1. Go into FD config, and make sure you have assigned a number to
each baud rate connecting to your system. Use the same numbers I have
below in the 'frodo.bat' file if you wish or swap them to others and
match them in the 'frodo.bat' file to the new ones. It will be easier
and safe to use the ones I post.
2. Add the following to your 'frodo.bat' file or just replace your
old one with this example then add in what you need for your setup.

Now that was a big 'frodo.bat' file!
For informational purposes, here is a rundown of some of the lines you
may not be familiar with:
AT H1 1 - This is a common software which is called AT.COM and
manipulates your modem. In this case, it is taking a modem on Com1,
offline. Depending on your modem brand, you may not need an extra
utility to do this. Both FD and TG have the capability of taking the
modem offline for you. It is there only for assistance of those
sysops who's modems wont stay offline with FD's codes.
EDITNL - This is one of the many nodediff merging softwares on the
market. Depending on your version, the addition of the /KILL switch,
will also delete the old nodediffs. It was included only as an
example, and you should use whatever you find at a local dial. Mergenl
is widely available and does the same thing.
MBUTIL - Gecho specific packer for message bases. See the 3rd FAQ for
other examples of tossing/packing sequences you may use for your
needs.

The Druggist Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his
sobbing wife. Tearfully she explained, "It's the druggist. He
insulted me terribly this morning on the phone." Immediately the
husband drove downtown to confront the druggist and demand an apology.
Before he could say more than a word or two, the druggist told him,
"Now, just a minute, listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm
failed to go off, so I was late getting up.
I went without breakfast and hurried out to the car, just to realize
that I locked the house with both house and car keys inside. I had to
break a window to get my keys. Then, driving a little too fast, I got
a speeding ticket.
Later, when I was about three blocks from the store, I had a flat
tire. When I finally got to the store there was a bunch of people
waiting for me to open up. I got the store opened and started waiting
on these people, and all the time the darn phone was ringing off the
hook."
He continued, "Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the cash
register drawer to make change, and they spilled all over the floor.
I got down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels; the phone was
still ringing.
When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made
me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on
it...half of them hit the floor and broke. Meanwhile, the phone is
still ringing with no let up, and I finally got back to answer it.
It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal
thermometer...and believe me, Mister, I told her!"

After a second session of psychotherapy, the pyschiatrist

Hello Warren.
Has anyone discussed the fact that the domain name for FidoNet.Org
expires within the month of February 2001?
The current "who is" states:

I was curious is someone is going to renew the domain name of
FIDONET.ORG again before it is stolen away from the FidoNet when it
expires?
Once the domain name is stolen, it would be very difficult to get it
back into FidoNet without paying some large fee to the new DNS holder!
Here are a few domain names which use fidonet:

Hi Frank,
Don't worry about it Frank. I will call George today if he isn't
planning on re-registering the domain name, I will take care of it for
Fidonet. Also please realize a few things: the registration is good
until February 26, and then Network Solutions lets it run a month
after that before removing the records.
Take care,

Re: Nodediffs
St:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi folks,
It's been reported to me that two people have had problems with some
software like XLAXDIFF, and the ARC packaging of the nodediff from my
system with at least nodediff.a19. The problem seemed to be related
to the fact that the name of the interior file was in lower case. The
problem was solved by extracting the file manually, renaming
nodediff.019 to NODEDIFF.019 and rearchiving it.
If you are having a problem like this with your nodelist processor,
hopefully nodediff.a26 has been no problem, since I changed the
filename from lower case to upper case for the ARC version.
FYI, as David did, I release 3 versions of the nodediff in ARC, ZIP
and LZH format in the NODEDIFF, DIFFZIP and DIFFLZH file echos,
respectively. Sorry, there is no version of ARJ for linux at this time
<smile>.
If anyone needs to pick up a fresh nodelist, it is available on my
system in /pub/nodelist at ftp.filegate.net, or file request at
1:2320/38, magic name NODELIST.
Take care, Janis
