I've seriously gotten so tired of the
web becoming the new bloatware. It's
gotten to the point that, even as we
get better and faster machines, the
developers of various websites will
just abuse that power to bog down the
user's machine with the excuse of
"It works fine for me." It's shameful.
I'd rather see most of these websites
return to the days of dial-up in how
they perform. Leaner, faster, not
draining a device's battery at an
alarming rate, and not causing to heat
up like an oven just because their
precious JavaScript package manager
says they need to load in lots of
absolutely unnecessary code to get
what they want.
Yeah, I'm angry. Running well-made
sites on my MacBook sips power, but
when I suddenly go on to a "modern"
site, like Twitter (for research) or
YouTube, battery life gets cut in half.
I can play videos from YouTube in VLC
with half the power loss as loading it
in their crummy HTML5 viewer. In fact,
I'm pretty sure Flash would work
better than the HTML5 player in terms
of power consumption at this point.
Hell, iTunes uses less power, and
THAT is a miracle in and of itself.
The web didn't need to become this
bloated. This was done because "we
can". Not "because we need to".
Give me native apps and a simple
web, please. Not the monstrosity we
have now.
