oLASER  1 nDATE 0886 1HP LASERJET PRINTER DRIVER INSTALLATION AND USE FLASER "A.  GENERAL DESCRIPTION !The  HP  LaserJet  printer  driver is designed to make it possible to print !reports prepared on the Alpha Micro computer on the  HP  LaserJet  printer. !Such  reports  are  prepared  by using Alpha WRITE.  Given that the user is !familiar with Alpha WRITE features such as FONT,  HEADER,  etc.,  then  the !LaserJet driver will produce the desired results. !The  HP LaserJet printer has the capability to do what is called "Portrait" !and "Landscape" printing.  The former  is  what  might  be  called  typical !printing,  i.e.,  the report prints from top to bottom on a typical 8 1/2 x !11 page.  Landscape means that the report will be printed sidewise  on  the !page,  i.e.,  from  side to side.  These printing modes should NOT be mixed !in one specific report that is to be printed via the HP LaserJet driver. #B.  INSTALLATION PROCEDURE !Two programs are required to use  the  LASER  Driver  on  the  Alpha  Micro !computer:    LASER.PDV,  and  TADUTL.LIT.  To restore these programs to the !Alpha Micro disk, mount the VHS tape in the VCR and  log  to  [1,2].   Type !VCRRES  DSK0:[]=DSK1:[]  and  follow  the  steps  normally  associated with !VCRRES.  When finished, you will note  that  the  LASER  driver,  which  is !called  LASER.PDV,  will be restored to DSK0:[1,6], and that the TADUTL.LIT !program that is used to insert the PIC code and to  control  the  LASER.PDV !will be present in [1,4]. !After  LASER.PDV  has  been  restored  to  DSK0:[1,4],  enter  the PIC code !provided by TADC.   The  PIC  code  contains  three  sets  of  letters  and !characters,  separated  by  a  dash,  that are associated with the SSD chip !contained within the computer.  It is important to  be  very  sensitive  to !the  letters  and  numbers  making  up  the  PIC code.  All the letters are !capitalized.  Note the difference between O and the number  0.   Similarly, !be careful to distinguish between the letter L and the number 1. !To  enter  the  PIC  code,  LOG to [1,2], and type TADUTL.  The TADUTL menu !will appear.  Since the LASER.PDV is part of the Office and Support  System !(OSS),  type OSS.  The next menu will list the software associated with OSS !system.  Type HP.  Information will then be displayed on the VDT about  the !SSD  process  and  the  PIC  code will then be requested for the LASER.PDV. !Enter the PIC code information exactly as  it  is  typed  on  the  enclosed !form,  and  touch  <RET>.    After  a few seconds the main TADUTL menu will !again appear.  Touch <RET> to exit from this menu.  You will  not  be  able !to  determine  if this process is succesful until you start to use programs !that use the LASER.PDV.  If the PIC code  was  entered  correctly,  reports !using this driver can then be sent to the HP LaserJet printer. oLASER  2 nDATE 0886 "B.  INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (Continued) !If  the  PIC  code  was  installed  incorrectly,  you  will see the message !invalid PIC, on the VDT when a report is sent to the HP  LaserJet  printer. !If  this occurs, then the PIC insertion process must be started over again. !If the driver still doesn't work, call TADC! !C.  USING THE LASERJET DRIVER !Most of the time the results of the LaserJet driver will be transparent  to !the  user,  e.g.,  the  driver simply translates the printer forms controls !received from AlphaWRITE for the  HP  LaserJet  printer.   However,  it  is !important  to  understand  that the LaserJet driver will not enable a print !command to be activated if the appropriate Font cartridge is not  installed !in  the  printer.  Similarly, if a printer characteristic is requested that !is not consistent with the  other  controls  exercised  in  the  AlphaWRITE !menu(s),  then that characteristic will not be activated in the printer, no !matter which Font cartridge is installed. !For example, suppose the "E" (Letter Gothic) Font cartridge  is  installed. !This  cartridge  has one pitch:  12 characters/inch (CPI).  This means that !if the document header requests 16 CPI, there is no  way  the  driver  will !make  it  possible to print a file with this requirement.  The Laser driver !will activate such a request only  when  an  appropriate,  e.g.,  "L"  Font !cartridge is installed in the printer. !Similarly,  if  some  portion  of  the text is to appear in italics, if the !Font cartridge has italics only under  12CPS,  and  the  AlphaWRITE  header !information  is  set  for  10  or 16 CPI, then the desired text will NOT be !italicized.  However, if the Font characteristic of the Font  cartridge  is !consistent  with  that the AlphaWRITE menu(s), and the appropriate requests !have been made  in  AlphaWRITE,  then  the  print  file  will  exhibit  the !requested characteristic. !All  printer  forms  control  requests  are  contained  in AlphaWRITE.  For !example, HEADER contains information such as  Lines/inch  (LPI),  and  Word !Spacing  (Fixed,  Variable,  or  Proportional).    Similarly,  Function key !number 2 is used in lower  case  mode  to  start,  and  end  underscore  or !underline.    And function key number 2, upper case (Shift Function key 2), !is used to start and end BOLD printing, and Font type.  Four  possibilities !are  provided for Font type, i.e, number 6 under Shift Font:  0 = Portrait; !1 = Landscape; 2 = Upright; and 3 = Italics.  NOTE:  do  not  mix  Portrait !and Landscape within a given file! !NOTE:    the  following  printer  forms  controls  are NOT activated in the !current version of the HP LaserJet  printer  driver.   Subsequent  versions !may have one or more of these printer characteristics. !Variable word spacing; Strikeout; Overbar; Overprint, double !underscore, and special characters.
