TIPEDT is a character oriented editing utility that allows the
user to directly edit the sequential files. These keypress files are
usually created by ESP Macro Desk Accessory, Task Manager control
files, or any file that contains printable and/or non-printable ASCII
characters. TIP files contain keystrokes characters that are used as
executable MACRO's with the ESP Package.
TIPEDT is a character editor, NOT a text editor. Using TIPEDT to edit
binary files that contain printable and/or non-printable ASCII
characters is much easier than using VUE in control Mode, because ALL
Control characters can be entered and edited in a much easier method.
TIPEDT is AMOS 1.3D to AMOS 2.x compatible. Extended directories and
all.
Command format:
.TIPEDT filespec[.TIP]
The default file extension is .TIP. Other file extensions can be used
if indicated in the file specification on the command line.
If the indicated filespec does not exist, TIPEDT will prompt the user
if they want the indicated file specification to be created. If the
users answers Y, TIPEDT will create the indicated file specification.
This allows the user to create and edit non-existing TIP files for
use with ESP or any other application.
If the user answers N, TIPEDT will return to the AMOS prompt.
The TIPEDT editing display is composed of two lines, each 25
characters long. Initially only the lower of the two lines is
displayed. Every character in the file can be displayed. Control
characters are displayed in reduced intensity preceded by a ^
(carot) character. Deletes (rubouts) are displayed in reduced
intensity as RUB.
The operator must remember that TIPEDT is a character oriented editor
and NOT a text editor such as the VUE utility. TIPEDT is used
primarily to edit binary files. These are sequential files that can
contain printable ASCII characters and non-printable ASCII characters
such as control codes.
To select the character to edit press the right or left arrow keys.
The current edit character is the character under the cursor. As
the arrow keys are pressed the display of editable characters
adjusts to move the new editable character under the cursor. The
characters which scroll off to the left will appear on the upper line
at the right most character position.
The character under the cursor may be deleted by pressing
control-D. Characters may be inserted by pressing control-F and
entering the new character when prompted. In normal operation the
insert instruction, control-F, must be given for each character to
be inserted.
TIPEDT can also toggle insert mode by pressing control-\. While the
user is in insert mode, any character or key sequence will be
inserted into the current text. This includes all printable ASCII
characters and control characters except control-\. Pressing
control-\ will exit or toggle insert mode off.
If you need to enter control-\ into the text stream, use control-F to
insert and then press control-\. This will insert control-\ into the
text stream. You must be OUT of Insert mode to insert the control-\
character by using the control-F method.
To move to the end of the file use control-E. To move to the
beginning of the file press HOME or control-^. To move passed control
characters to the next group of printable ASCII characters, press
control-W. To move backwards to the previous group of printable
ASCII characters, press control-A.
When you are through editing the file press ESCAPE to change to
command mode. There are three commands in command mode:
ESCAPE - to toggle to and from edit mode.
F - to Finish and save changes.
Q - to Quit and ignore all the changes made.
TIPEDT provides an online help menu of available commands.
