1. About this FAQ
===========================================>>
This FAQ covers the GameCube version of SSX 3.
Version History:
v0.1: The main thing missing is the course walkthroughs. This will be the
primary addition to the next version. There's a lot of information in
here already, though, so it's still useful.
======================================>>
2. How to Play
===========================================>>
You're a snowboarder, riding down a mountain. Press the (A) button to crouch
down, and then release it to stand up and jump. If you do this as you go over
a bump in the course, you'll get a lot of airtime. While in the air, press
(L), (R), or (Z) and you will grab your board. Release that button before you
land and you will successfully complete your first trick. Doing this does two
things. First, you get points or money, depending on where you are in the game.
Second, your adrenaline meter (on the right side of the screen) will go up.
The more complicated the trick is, the more points or money you get, and the
more the adrenaline meter goes up. Here are some ways to make the trick more
complicated:
- Do multiple grabs. To do this, release the first grab button and then press
and hold a different grab button (L), (R), or (Z).
- Tweak the grab. While holding a grab, you can press the (B) button to tweak
the grab.
- Do a flip. You can press and hold a direction on the Control Pad to do a
spin or a flip. If you start holding this direction before you release the
(A) button to stand and jump, you can "pre-wind" the flip so that you can
begin flipping as you begin your jump. This can result in even more points!
For bonus Style points, change the direction of your flip in mid-air!
- Land on a rail. If your jump ends up landing you on a rail, you'll get
bonus points.
- Chain tricks together. If you start a trick within three seconds of
completing the previous one, your trick multiplier increases.
Each of these methods will earn you extra points and/or money. They will also
fill up your adrenaline meter faster. Once your adrenaline meter is full, you
can do Uber moves. To do this, simply get a good amount of air, do a grab,
hold it for at least one second, and then tweak it by pressing (B). Each
uber move you successfully complete will give you a letter in the word UBER.
Once you have spelled this word, you can then do full ubers which are different
for each character. See the ubers section below for more details about this.
There are several different modes of play. There's free-riding, where you can
just ride around the mountain collecting crystals, performing extra challenges,
and pretty much doing whatever you want. There are also races, where you have
to complete the course as fast as possible. In races, you'll want to note that
holding (B) while boarding down the mountain uses your adrenaline for a boost
of speed. There are also freestyle events where the object is to complete the
course within a given time period with the most points. As you win the events,
you will unlock a total of three peaks.
======================================>>
3. Improvements over SSX Tricky
===========================================>>
Conquer the Mountain - Rather than just having individual events, the courses
are connected by mountain area. The mountain has a mix of untracked terrain
with a jumps or rail here and there. There are also other challenges and
collectables scattered throughout the area. You still have the ability to jump
right to a specific event through a menu system, and the menu system shows very
clearly which events have been completed.
Track Selection - The tracks have become more speciialized. In the first
mountain, there's a course that's made for "Big Air", and one that's a huge
halfpipe where you compete for highest score in two minutes. When you get to
the starting gate, you have the option of entering it, or going around it and
"playing" on the track. This means you could literally board for hours on the
half-pipe racking up one huge combo.
SUPER UBER - The TRICKY meter has become the adrenaline meter. You fill the
meter up initially like before. Once it's full, you can execute a first level
of uber moves by using adrenaline during any grab. Your adrenaline still goes
down when you use it (by pressing B, like before), but you don't lose the
ability to execute ubers as long as you get it full before a certain period of
time elapses. Doing ubers tend to fill the meter up, but don't always. For
each uber you execute, you get another letter spelling UBER. Once you have all
four letters, you can do the full ubers and you begin spelling SUPER. Once you
have spelled SUPER, you get unlimited adrenaline like in Tricky, but it only
lasts a certain period of time (about a minute). After that, you lose the
SUPER, but not the UBER, and you have to spell SUPER again.
Better Rails - It's a lot harder to fall off of the rails, and you can uber
while you are on them by hitting a grab (as long as you can uber). Just make
sure that the rail has a little curl at the end to give you some air, or that
you have enough rail left to finish it. Rails are also more accurately aimed
at other rails, so expect to get chained from one rail to the next, even on
your first time through the course.
Recovering - If you wipe out, just hit B repeatedly. You will recover and get
up without losing any extra adrenaline. The other option is to reset, which
will cost you quite a bit of adrenaline. You can even recover mid-air, do a
grab, and land!
New Scoring! - Now you can hold ubers, just like you can hold moves. Different
ubers can be held at different points, and it's pretty intuitive. The score
just racks up while you do it. The other option, chaining moves together, has
been made much easier to do. You get three seconds to begin a move after
completing one to keep the chain going. You only get the bonus points for the
chain if you end the chain without dying, so sometimes you might want to end
it on purpose.
Money - You now have money. You collect it instead of points when you're
riding around the mountain. You earn it from competing in events. You spend
it on collectibles, upgrades, skins, boards, and ubers. You can even transfer
it to SSX 3 on the Game Boy Advance with a cable.

You can purchase attributes to improve your character. These give the character
increased abilities which makes it easier for you to win races, perform tricks,
and generally do well in the game. Each attribute starts at 1.0 and can be
purchased in 0.2 increments. Each 0.2 increment starts out costing $250 and
increases in cost every time the attribute passes a whole number value. The
final increment brings the total to 11.0 and costs $5,000. To buy every
attribute costs $577,500 per character.
Here are the attributes available:
Acceleration - increases acceleration from slow speeds
Edging - improves overall board handling
Speed - increases the top speed
Spin - increases the speed of spins and flips
Stability - improves stability while cornering and balancing
Toughness - reduces chances of getting knocked down
Tricks - increases speed of performing tricks
