Hi, I'm yyr (Aaron Teplitsky). Some of you may know me from the DDR community.
But enough about me. Let's talk about Pump It Up Exceed for PS2, which I'll
refer to from here on out as just "Pump Exceed."
Pump Exceed is a great game, but the clunky interface can make it difficult for
even experienced players to figure out which of its 101 songs to play next. No
worries! Before the game was even released I decided that I'd compile a list
with every difficulty for every song, so all of the information would be in one
place. That--the meat of this FAQ--is located in section 4. But I figured I
might as well make a complete FAQ out of it, adding some info on the game
itself, the features of the PS2 version, and some differences between Pump and
some other, similar games, namely Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) and In The Groove
(ITG).
That said: I am not an authority on Pump Exceed or the Pump series by any means.
I don't even consider myself to be all that good at the game. Therefore, you
will not find much in the way of playing tips, strategies or song-specific
information in here. However, the best places to obtain such information
are Internet forums, such as those on www.bemanistyle.com and www.ddrfreak.com.
Now, on to the info I *do* provide!
Version history:
0.5 - 9/2/2005 - Initial release.
0.7 - 9/6/2005 - Added some Sudden Death unlocks, as well as info on how to
unlock six of the hidden songs and some more Q&A.
0.8 - 9/9/2005 - Added info on how to unlock two more of the hidden songs.
Updated some of the Q&A.
Hidden songs will be added to the charts on the next update.
0.85- 9/15/2005 - Added and revised some of the Q&A.
Added eight of the ten hidden songs to the charts.
0.9 - 9/23/2005 - Revised/updated some of the Q&A and unlock information.
Hopefully the next update will complete this. However,
since my freetime is limited and other games beckon,
it may take a while.
1.0 - 11/10/2005 - Added info on the Xbox version's Edit mode.
Added the last two hidden songs to the charts. The order
of Go in the Channel charts is not confirmed, but I have
guessed it based on placement in the arcade version.
Relocated Flamenco to its correct channel (K-Pop).
Removed the exact unlock order from the Sudden Death mode
section. This is because 1) it wasn't going to be finished
and 2) I don't think anyone cares.
Clarified a few things and switched around some words.
This is the final version. Thanks for using my FAQ!
1.01- 12/29/2005 - Thanks to the efforts of HolyLancer182 on GameFAQs, the
exact round count to unlock Go was finally added. Yay!
I updated the Q&A a bit, as well.
NOW I think we're done here.
2.0 - How To Play
-----
Pump It Up is a dancing (stepping) game where you select a song and difficulty
out of the available library, then step on arrow panels in response to commands
given on the screen. These commands are in the form of colored arrows that rise
towards a "step zone" towards the top of the screen. The moving arrows will
overlap the "step zone" to the beat of the music--this is the time at which
you're supposed to hit the corresponding panels!
Sometimes 2 (or more) arrows will appear at the same time. You must jump and/or
use your hands to hit them all simultaneously! Also, sometimes you'll see an
arrow with a trail following it. You must HOLD your foot on this arrow for the
length of the following trail to avoid a massive penalty!
Each step will be judged based on your accuracy.
Perfect: You hit the step with perfect (or good, at least) timing.
Great: You were a little off.
Good: You were way off.
Bad: You were really, really far off.
Miss: You missed the step completely.
Above the step zone each player has a meter (lifebar) that measures how well
they're doing. The meter will go up if you're doing well (Perfect, Great) and
go down if you're doing poorly (Bad, Miss). If the meter completely empties,
you will fail out of the song ("Stage Break") and the game will end instantly.
Otherwise, when the song is complete, you will receive a screen with a summary
of your scoring and a letter grade based on your total song performance.
* If two players are playing, Stage Break will not occur unless both players
fail the song.
* The lifebars can be turned off in both Arcade and Home modes using the
Options menu. This will prevent Stage Break from happening.
3.0 - Differences From Similar Games
-----
Anyone who's played similar games--namely DDR and ITG--for any length of time
surely knows that just about all of the above description applies to those games
too. So... to a DDR or ITG player, what exactly makes Pump different? Read on
to find out!
- The Platform/Pad
The biggest difference is that Pump features a totally different "stage" from
the other two games. Instead of four arrows--Up, Down, Left and Right--Pump
features five panels: Up-Left, Up-Right, Down-Left, Down-Right and Center
("Stomp"). The panels are arranged in the shape of an X. To easily visualize
this, look at your keyboard's numeric keypad: 7, 9, 5, 1 and 3. It's typical
for a DDR/ITG player to take a while to get used to the different layout, as it
requires that you move around more. Many players who have played both Pump and
4-panel games believe that the steps in Pump feel closer to actual dancing.
- The Arrows
The arrows themselves are shaped differently, but the big difference is in their
coloring. In DDR/ITG, the arrows are colored according to their timing. In
Pump, that is not the case; the Up-Left and Up-Right arrows are always colored
red/orange, the Down-Left and Down-Right arrows are always colored blue, and the
Center is always colored yellow. This makes songs more difficult to read, and
is one of the reasons most serious Pump players use speed mods.
- The Mods
Pump's mods are generally more minimalistic than DDR's, and you certainly won't
find anything of ITG's magnitude in this category. All of the speed mods are
whole numbers (1x, 2x, 3x...), for example. You will find a lot of similar mods
(like "Nonstep," Pump's version of Stealth), but also some that differ slightly.
For example, instead of Shuffle, Pump has a Random mod that actually randomly
assigns arrows for you. In Double modes, this can get ridiculous!
- The Backgrounds
While ITG uses fairly generic background movies, and DDR strings short movie
clips together, Pump contains full-length, full-screen backgrounds for every
song! Many of these consist of gorgeous hand-drawn animation! This is one of
the areas where Pump really shines. It's sometimes difficult to appreciate
these while you're actually playing the game, so the home versions of Pump
Exceed have a bonus Videos mode where you may freely view the songs' background
animations!
- The Difficulties
DDR and ITG actually feature five different difficulty levels for Single mode,
although not all songs have steps in every difficulty. In fact, most of DDR's
songs lack Challenge steps. In addition, Double has four difficulties of its
own in both games.
Pump is very different in this regard. Pump contains only three Single
difficulties and two Double difficulties. Not all difficulties are available in
each song. In addition, when two players are playing, they must play at the
same difficulty.
- Songlist Style
DDR, having come from Japan, features many songs on its songlists that are
either sung in Japanese or appeal to Japanese audiences. Recent North American
versions of DDR have fewer of these than the original Japanese releases. But
Andamiro has made no attempt to hide Pump's Korean heritage in this home version
of Exceed. In fact, it's been embraced... the K-Pop Channel, roughly a third of
the game, is entirely Korean music! Please enjoy the sounds of popular Korean
artists!
Additionally, you'll find that the music in Pump--including the music created by
the in-house team, BanYa--leans more towards traditional pop music than DDR or
ITG. You won't find much in the way of techno and trance here, for instance.
For some players, this is a breath of fresh air.
- Grading/Scoring
Technical players of other dance games will quickly realize that the timing
window on "Perfect" steps is very large compared to DDR. Many steps that would
have been Greats in DDR will be Perfects in Pump, and many DDR players whose
accuracy is generally less than perfect will often find themselves with single-
digit Greats. Likewise, the grading system is also more lax than DDR's. You
can get a large number of Misses but still wind up with an "A." The technical
emphasis in Pump seems to simply be on passing the difficult songs with decent
accuracy, and not necessarily hitting all of the steps perfectly.
- Freezes
Freeze or Hold arrows work differently in Pump than in DDR or ITG. Those two
games treat a freeze/hold arrow as two things: the step and the freeze. You are
scored twice (once on each). In Pump, freezes are very different. It's as if
they're equivalent to a string of notes on the same arrow, but you only have to
hold your foot down to hit them all. In other words, you'll see "Perfect
Perfect Perfect Perfect..." until the end of the freeze, unless you aren't
holding your foot down, in which case you'll see "Miss Miss Miss Miss..." In
other words, don't miss Pump freezes, or you'll be failing out pretty quickly.
- Hands
In The Groove did NOT invent Hands; they were in Pump first. (Hands: having to
hit more than two panels at the same time.) Most songs don't have Hands, but
quite a few do, especially on Crazy difficulty. The main difference here is
that the songlist won't warn you in advance...you'll have to keep an eye out for
them, and be ready!
Those are the major differences. Some sound good and some don't sound so good,
but for the most part, they're just differences between games that ultimately
play about the same. If you've truly enjoyed 4-panel games such as DDR and ITG,
you will definitely come to enjoy Pump if you give it a chance! Now...on to the
guide!
4.0 - Songlist & Difficulty Guide
-----
Here is the reason I put this FAQ together. Originally I was just going to do
this for myself, print it out and keep a copy with me while I played, but I
figured... as long as I'm doing it for myself, why not for everyone else too?
The reason I felt this guide was necessary is simple: Pump Exceed's clunky
interface. When Pump Exceed was first released in arcades, I liked the look and
feel of it, and the ability to switch between Single and Double modes in the
middle of a game. But when you're actually trying to use it, it can be a pain
trying to find your next song, especially if you're unfamiliar with the
songlist.
In DDR, you can scroll through songs while watching the difficulty meter on the
bottom of the screen, and check the Groove Radar to get an idea of what sort of
steps await you. ITG arguably does it even better by showing you exactly how
many steps, hands, etc. are going to be in the song as well as assigning it a
difficulty number.
Pump also assigns a difficulty number to each difficulty of each song, but in
the arcade (or Arcade Mode), you can't view these numbers while scrolling
through the songlist. In fact, you can't even view which difficulties are
available for a song while scrolling through the list. You must first select
the song you wish to play, AND THEN you are presented with the available
difficulties (for both Single and Double) and asked to choose one. You can
"back out" if you don't like what's available, but this is a time-consuming and
irritating process, made worse by the 60-second time limit. Pump Exceed's Home
mode is not much better; you can see difficulty ratings for each song, but only
for a single difficulty. (This is how the series used to work in the pre-Exceed
arcade versions.)
So here I've listed everything, first by the order they're presented in the
game, and then by difficulty rating order. Pump steps are given a difficulty
rating between 1 and 20. Available difficulties will be listed for each song by
their rating. WARNING: The rating system for this game is odd. You will find
mis-numbered songs...lots of them. The rating system is a good general guide,
but you should not believe it to be the last word on the song's difficulty.
That said, here is an overview of the game's five difficulties, immediately
followed by the charts:
NORMAL ("Beginner Mode"): This Single difficulty contains the game's easiest
steps. In DDR terms, the difficulties range from approximately one to six feet.
Older versions of Pump called this level "Easy."
HARD ("Professional Mode"): Players who are familiar with similar games should
start here. This Single difficulty contains a wide range of step levels, but
once you're truly good at Pump, you should be more than able to master them all.
In DDR terms, difficulties range from approximately four to nine feet.
CRAZY ("Stepper Mode"): The hardest Single difficulty. The easiest steps here
will give you a workout, while the most difficult are so very hard that you'll
think they're 12- or 13-footers from ITG... or perhaps even worse. In DDR
terms, difficulties start from approximately eight feet.
FREESTYLE ("Performance Mode"): The normal Double difficulty. You must use two
pads to play this mode, and move around quite a bit to hit everything, but the
reward comes in the form of amazingly fun steps you simply can't experience
anywhere else. In DDR terms, difficulties range from approximately two to ten
feet. Older versions of Pump simply called this level "Double."
NIGHTMARE ("Burning Mode"): This newly-added Double difficulty contains the
game's hardest steps. Prepare for pain.

5.0 - PS2 Version Features
-----
NOTE: Most of the following information is also true of the Xbox version. Only
info pertaining to the four songs removed from the Xbox version (Canon-D, We
Don't Stop, Maria and Pumping Up) is not valid. In addition, Final Audition3
U.F is locked in the Xbox version, and will unlock after 100 complete rounds
of Arcade Mode.
5.1 - General Info and Partially-Locked Songs
When you first power on Exceed PS2, the following are true:
- Initially available modes are Arcade, Home and Sudden Death as well as a
Tutorial.
* Arcade Mode resembles the arcade version of Exceed and includes Internet
Ranking.
* Home Mode works like Event Mode in similar games; in other words, it doesn't
end until you quit. The selection method is also different: you pick a
difficulty first, THEN your song. While selecting a song, its difficulty rating
is displayed in the screen's upper corner. Lastly, while on the songlist you
can hold BACK to access a mod menu, like DDR's (called the Easymodifier menu
here).
* Sudden Death Mode challenges you to clear a song (on any difficulty) without
Missing anything. If you get even one Miss, you fail out of the song, but any
better step rating (including Bad) is okay. This is NOT a nonstop mode--when
you clear the song, you're done, and you go back to the menu to choose again.
- You can turn the life gauge ON or OFF for both Arcade and Home modes, as well
as adjust the difficulty of the lifebars.
- 10 songs are completely locked. They show up in Song Statistics as
"??????????????." They are referred to both in the game and in this FAQ as
"HIDDEN songs."
- The following songs are locked in Arcade Mode until cleared in Home Mode:
BANYA CHANNEL: Final Audition 2, Turkey March, Mr. Larpus, Beethoven Virus,
Winter
- The following songs are locked in Arcade Mode until cleared in Sudden Death
Mode. They are also the ONLY songs initially available in Sudden Death Mode.
K-POP CHANNEL: Forever Love, Love Song, Valenti
POP CHANNEL: Kiss Me, Power Of Dream
- When starting Home Mode for the first time, you will be limited to selecting
the following 20 songs. To access the rest you must clear them in Arcade Mode
first.
BANYA CHANNEL: X-Treme, Get Up!, Final Audition3 U.F., Blazing, Pump Me Amadeus,
Final Audition 2, Turkey March, Mr. Larpus, Beethoven Virus, Winter
K-POP CHANNEL: What Do You Really Want, Shake That Bootie
POP CHANNEL: A Little Less Conversation, I Love You Baby, Let's Groove, Name of
the Game, Rapper's Delight, Walkie Talkie Man, Essa Maneira, Born To Be Alive
5.2 - Unlocking & Secrets
- Video Mode unlocks after clearing 20 songs in ANY mode. Duplicate songs
within each mode, however, will not count. For example, if you cleared 8
DIFFERENT songs in Arcade, 7 in Home and 5 in Sudden Death, that will work.
The videos for the 20 songs you cleared will be available immediately. From
this point, clearing a song in any mode should add it to Video Mode.
- Survival Mode unlocks after clearing 20 songs in Home Mode. Note that these
must be 20 DIFFERENT songs. For example, if you clear Essa Maneira 20 times, it
only counts as 1. When you first enter Survival Mode, the 20 songs you cleared
are the only ones selectable; to add more songs, clear them in Home Mode.
- Survival Unlocks
The following HIDDEN songs will be unlocked by playing Survival Mode:
10 songs cleared (in one game): Street Show Down
20 songs: Monkey Fingers
30 songs: Flamenco
Duplicate plays of one song WILL count here. You'll get the unlocks even if you
play the same one song 30 times, as long as you don't fail or quit before the
30th clear. NOTE: There is NO reward of any kind for playing beyond Stage 31.
- Distance Unlocks
In the Statistics menu, you'll find an option called "Step Distance." This
number increases with each non-Miss step you take. 1 km is equivalent to 2000
steps. Distance is added even when you fail songs, so just keep on going!
The following HIDDEN songs will be unlocked at these distance milestones:
10 km: My Way
50 km: One Love
100 km: CANON-D
- Arcade Mode Unlocks
Note that a round only counts if you clear all four possible songs. To reach
the fourth song, get a grade of A or S on the first three. To make the process
easier, you can turn off the lifebar in Options to prevent failing out early.
The following HIDDEN songs will be unlocked after the listed number of rounds:
25 rounds: Point Break
50 rounds: Dignity
100 rounds: We Don't Stop
175 rounds: Go
- Note on the HIDDEN song unlocks
When you unlock one of these ten songs, it becomes available immediately in ALL
modes.
- More songs for Sudden Death Mode
Songs will be added in a set order as you clear unique songs in Sudden Death
Mode (repeat clears do not count). It doesn't matter what order you clear
songs in; the same unlock order will be used regardless. Songs will be
unlocked one by one until all 91 non-HIDDEN songs are available. (HIDDEN songs
are added automatically when unlocked.)
- Easymodifiers
Thanks to GeoffMendicino on GameFAQs for some of this information.
The "mod menu" that appears when you hold the Back button does not have all
available mods at first.
The following Easymodifiers will be unlocked after completing the listed goals:
5 unique songs in Home Mode: Vanish
20 unique songs in Home Mode: Random
ALL BanYa Channel songs in Home Mode: Flower Card Skin
ALL K-Pop Channel songs in Home Mode: Old Skin
ALL songs in Sudden Death Mode: Throw-In
- There are more Easymodifiers to unlock, but the exact methods are unknown.
Please note that you can always use any modifiers by inputting the step
codes in the instruction manual, even if they haven't been "unlocked."
6.0 - Q&A
-----
The questions and information from this section were gathered from various
online message boards and other sources.
Q: Is there a code to unlock everything?
A: If there is, nobody outside of Andamiro/Mastiff knows.
Q: How do you unlock Dignity and CANON-D?! What's the fastest way?
A: Play 50 complete, 4-song rounds of Arcade Mode to unlock Dignity. (3-song
rounds may work, but this is not confirmed.) To get CANON-D, you must get your
step mileage up to 100 km (in other words, you have to hit 200,000 non-Miss
steps).
If you can't always pass everything, you should turn the lifebar off in Arcade
Mode to avoid failing out of games early. To raise your step mileage quicker,
you can play harder songs, or play on the controller when you're tired. (Join
The Party Crazy 3 times = a little over 1 km.)
Q: So what's the most efficient way to unlock everything the fastest?
A: Play Survival until stage 31, then fail out. Play Sudden Death and Home
Mode specifically to unlock the songs locked in Arcade Mode. Then, just play
Arcade Mode--A LOT-- and forget the rest of the game exists until you have
everything.
Q: How do you use speed mods?
A: Press (in this order) Up-Left, Up-Right, Up-Left, Up-Right, Center. This
will switch to the next speed setting. Enter the code again until you find the
setting you want. You can also hold Back to access the Easymodifier Menu if you
happen to be playing Home Mode.
For a complete list of modifier codes, please check the game manual.
Q: How is the Xbox version different?
A: The Xbox version contains 4 less songs (97), but in return, Xbox Live users
have been promised downloadable songs (not free). According to reports, the 4
missing songs are Canon-D, We Don't Stop, Maria and Pumping Up. There is also
a downloadable Edit Mode, which is now available. The big news here is that
the Edit Mode supports custom soundtracks, so you can create Pump steps to ANY
song you can put on your Xbox!!
Q: Where are the downloadable songs on the Xbox version?
A: As of 12/23/2005, there are no downloadable songs available (thanks to
Razor10 on GameFAQs for confirming this). Folks are starting to wonder if
there ever will be downloadable songs, and at this point, I'd advise you not to
bet on it.
Q: Should I get the PS2 or Xbox version?
A: Gameplay-wise, the two versions are identical. However, if you have Xbox
Live, some creativity and some free time, I'd recommend the Xbox version solely
for the Edit Mode. (I wish I'd known months ago that it would support custom
soundtracks!)
Q: How is the original Korean PS2 version different?
A: Thanks to DeXtrosity v2 on the GameFAQs boards for the following info.
Songs that were taken out of the Asian version for the US version: Get Your
Groove On, Oy Oy Oy, All I want for X-Mas, Oh Rosa (Spanish ver.), First Love
(Spanish ver.), Let the Sunshine, Lay it Down, Everybody, On Your Side, Fiesta
Macarena Pt. 1 and Xi Bom Bom Bom.
Added to the US version: CANON-D, Street Showdown, Point Break, My Way, Hatred,
We Don't Stop, A Little Less Conversation, Name of the Game, Rapper's Delight,
Let's Groove, Walkie Talkie Man and I Love You Baby.
Total songs in the Korean version: 100. The North American version: 101.
In addition, a CZ stepchart was added for Love Song (and possibly more) and the
difficulties of several songs were tweaked to represent them much better (psh,
like Dignity CZ being a 15...yeah right).
Q: Is song "x" in the game? How close to the arcade is this version?
A: The majority of the time: if it was in the arcade version of Exceed 1,
there's a very good chance it's in there. The home version of Pump Exceed is
very arcade-like, and has lots of Korean content!
Q: How is the pad that comes with the game? Can it also be used with DDR/ITG?
A: The pad is good stuff. I hear it's not as good as the Korean pad, but it
feels fairly solid. As far as the four-panel games go: there are Up, Down,
Left and Right arrows on the pad, so it is possible, yes. However, the actual
buttons are smaller than the 4-panel pads’ buttons. Also, there are no Circle
or Start buttons on the pad, so Japanese versions of DDR won’t work--there’s no
way to start the game!
Q: Can I buy a second pad separately?
A: Yes! Mad Catz has released pad-only packs that can be purchased for $20
each. While I haven't seen any in stores yet, they sell them at their Web
site:
http://www.madcatzstore.com. (I have no knowledge of whether the pad is
identical to the Mastiff pack-in, or what any possible differences may be, so
consider this merely informational and not an endorsement.)
Q: Are there any alternatives to the bundled pad at all? Ignitions? Anything?
A: Only one: the Andamiro USB pad, bundled with the PC and Korean PS2 versions.
I hear it's thicker and has a better bottom, but I've never used it myself.
The other option you have right now is to modify the bundled pad. Try taping or
otherwise fastening it to plywood. I actually use a layer of Ignition foam
in between the pad and plywood.
Q: Can't I use a Cobalt Flux with this game? It has a middle button!
A: Basically, the answer is no. This is because Pump uses only the shoulder
buttons--this cannot be changed--and the CF's panels don't map there. I've
heard of people attempting to modify their control boxes, but even if that is
successful, the sizes of the buttons will be off; Pump's diagonals are bigger
than the CF's. It seems that the best solution really is a Pump soft pad,
modified or otherwise.
Q: Can I buy the game by itself, without the pad? They sell pads separately,
after all.
A: No, at least not as of 12/29/2005. I wouldn't expect that you'd be able
to do this, at least until Exceed 2 comes out (if that happens).
Q: Can I play using a standard Dual Shock (or compatible) controller?
A: Yeah, it'll work. Use the shoulder buttons for the arrows and X for the
center. You can also turn Analog mode on and use the thumbsticks (press them
down for the Center steps).
Q: I've been playing DDR for years, but this game seems impossible...why?
A: It's just the different button layout that's confusing you. Give it time.
It took a while to get good at DDR, right? This is no different. Practice!
And if you're having trouble reading the arrows, try a higher speed mod.
Q: Why does the difficulty rating on CANON-D (Crazy/Nightmare) say "??" Is
there a problem with my copy of the game? How hard is it really?
A: No, CANON-D was rated ?? on Crazy in the arcade, too. (Nightmare steps
weren't playable in the normal fashion, either...they had to be unlocked using
a special process that didn't carry over from one game to the next.) And by
the way... IT'S VERY HARD. =)
Q: What's with the high scores on Join The Party?
A: Join The Party on Crazy has a center-button freeze that lasts for the entire
length of the song. This is worth several hundred Perfect steps. Don't get too
excited--the Hall Of Fame on Pump's Internet Ranking won't allow you to choose
the same song twice, and there are songs worth even more points!
Q: Honestly, seriously...is this game REALLY as good as DDR?
A: It's all a matter of opinion and personal preference. There are people that
actually enjoy Pump MORE than DDR or ITG. Perhaps you should try it...maybe
you'll wind up being one of them!
7.0 - uh, Conclusion?
