1. Introduction
******************************************************************************
I am MysticWeirdo also known by my real name Warren Grieder.

Pro Fishing Challenge is a fishing game for the Xbox.

The game features 21 different species of fish, including several varieties of
bass which are the primary focus of the game.  Four lakes are available to test
your angling skills.  With 301 lures after accounting for color and rigging
variations, 30 line types, 35 types of rods, and 2 reel types, this game offers
632100 possible tackle setups.

This guide is intended for the single player mode of the game.  I don't have
Xbox live and can't comment on that mode of the game. If you're seeking
information on Xbox Live mode, I suggest visiting the forums listed in the
reference section, you may find more information there as well as schedules for
upcoming online tournaments.

This game is compatible with a fishing controller.  However, since I lake one of
those this guide will focus on using the stardard Xbox controller.

WARNING #1:  You may notice the game autosaves when starting and ending a day of
fishing.  Don't trust this, I lost all of the prizes for the 1st day of the
masters tournament doing so.

I believe the end of the day autosave only saves your records (and maybe
credits).  Always select Save and Exit from the main menu after each tournament
day to ensure that you save any clothing options, boats, and fishing tackle you
may have won. If you don't the unlockables CANNOT be won back by replaying the
tournament, while the equipment and boats may be purchased the unlockable are
gone for good. Equipment can be won again on the replays.

I think starting a new day of fishing saves it as well but don't rely on it.

WARNING #2: If you delete an angler that has partipated in a tournament, any
unlockables they've received may be unavailable to a new angler created in the
same slot.

3. Starting the Game
******************************************************************************

3.1 Game Type Selection
=======================

The first thing to do is select a Single Player game or Xbox Live.  This guide
will focus exclusively on the single play game.

3.2 Start New or Load Saved Game
================================

After selecting single player choose an empty save slot to begin an new game
or choose an existing character to continue a saved game.

3.3 Character Creation

3.3.1 Appearance

If your starting a new game you need to create an angler:
1. Select the anglers gender: Male or Female

2. Choose of of the nine faces.

4. Main Single Player Menu
******************************************************************************

The main menu is navigated using the left thumbstick or the d-pad.  The A
button selects the highlighted item.  The B button returns to the previous
level.  In the edit tackle and shop submenus, the Y button can be you to call
up the in game Help.

You start the game with 50000 credits and amatuer ranking.

4.1 Select Game
===============

This option takes you to a submenu with the options Tournament and Free
Fishing.  I'll cover each of these in their own sections.

If you haven't previously selected the Tutorial with you current character,
selecting either of these option will take you to the tutorial first.

4.2 My Information
==================

There are three options in this submenu to choose from: Personal Information,
Personal Bests, and Tournament Hi Scores

4.2.1 Personal Information
--------------------------

Selecting this option times you to a screen displaying your angler's name,
rank, play time, and cash on hand.

--------------------
4.2.2 Personal Bests
--------------------

Selecting this option displays your weight and length records for the various
species of fish in the game.

4.2.3 Tournament Hi Scores
--------------------------

This option display your records for the five tournaments and the season.
Your win count is also displayed.

4.3 Wear Change
===============

This option allows you to change your anglers outfit.  The same option that
were available in character creation can be chosen from.

Additional options will come available

4.4 Edit Tackle
===============

The game allow you to have two sets of tackle (lure, reel, rod, and lines) set
up.  This submenu lets you configure them.

4.4.1 Initial Inventory
-----------------------

The default sets are

Tackle Set 01 (equipped):
Lure: Basic Crank Type F
Reel: Type C Reel
Rod: Origin Rod C-65R-ML
Line: Origin Line N 16 lb.

Tackle Set 02:
Lure: Origin stick
Reel: Type S Reel
Rod: Origin Rod S-60F-UL
Line: Origin Rod Line N 8 lbs.

Your initial lure inventory (include the ones selected in the two tackle sets)
is:

You only have the rods, reels, and lines in the two tackle sets when you
start.

4.4.2 Editing the tackle
------------------------

On selecting on of the two tackle sets you'll see three options.

Exchange
--------
Choose this option to set the current tackle set as the default.

Edit
----
Call up another submenu to change the lure, reel, rod, and/or line in the set.

Select the item type to change, and select the replacement from the listed
items in your inventory.  Items with 0 are already in one of the sets and
cannot be selected.  Some lures may offer a rigging option after selecting
them.

Select Finish to confirm you changes.

Remove
------

This option can be used to remove a lure, reel, rod, and/or line from the
current set, leaving the space empty.  As the tackle set is unusally until the
space is full, this option's only useful for swapping items between the two
sets when there are none in reserve, or when selling and items to make room
for a replacement purchase in you inventory.

4.5 Database
============
Select this option to read the in game descriptions for the various lures,
reels, rods, lines, boats, and fish in the game.

4.6 Shop
========
Buy and sell equipment in the shop by selecting the appropriate option here.
See the shop section for the equipment prices.

You'll see a display showing the total number of items in your inventory, the
maximum number of items you're allowed, the number of the currently selected
item you have, the price of the currently selected item and your cash on hand.

4.7 Options
===========

There are 6 selections in the option menu.  Two, player information, and Xbox
communicator are Xbox live only and are greyed out in single player mode.

4.7.1 Screen Display

You can toggle several HUD elements in this submenu: Wind, Gear, Time, Player
Name, Lake Map, Depth Finder, Lure Information, Timing Gauge, Tension Guage,
and Fishing Guide.

4.7.2 Screen Gamma
------------------

Adjust the display brightness with the slider on this subscreen.

4.7.3 Sound
-----------

You can adjust the volume for the Background Music, Sound Effect, and
Environmental sounds here.

4.7.4 Xbox Controller

You can toggle the controller vibration on and off in this submenu.

4.8 Tutorial
============

Selecting this option begins a fishing tutorial.  Starting this tutorial is
required before participating in a tournament or free fishing.  I'll go into
this in more detail in the Tutorial Mode Section.

4.9 Save & Exit
===============

This option save the game and returns to the title screen.

5. Tutorial Mode
******************************************************************************

You enter tutorial mode when you select Tutorial from the main menu, or the
first time you select one of Tournament or Free Fishing from the Select Game
submenu if you have started the tutorial previously.

If you want to skip the tutorial enter start, start, up, A, A, B, U, A, A to
navigate out of the tutorial to the main menu. You should only do this if
you've been through the tutorial with another angler as it teaches you most of
the controls you're going to need.

When playing through your newly gained knowledge at the end of many of the
tutorial subsections.

5.1 Manuevering
===============

This section theaches you how to move the boat with the engine and trolling
motors.

5.1.1 Maps
----------

The Maps subsection gves an overview of the map system so you'll know where
you are on the lake.

Small Map
---------

The small map in the upper righ of the screen shows your location, direction,
and the weigh in piers (no piers in Xbox live mode).

The small map has two modes: a zoomed in positions and surroundings view, and
a zoomed out view of the entire lake.  Use the white button to toggle between
the views.

Big Map
-------
Press the black button to toggle the big map on and off when in Engine Mode.
The big map is more detailed that the small map and also shows the your
location and the locations of the weigh in piers. (On Xbox Live other player
positions are also shown).

TEST: There's no test for this subsection.

5.1.2 Engine Mode
-----------------

Engine mode is used to move across the lake.

Use the right trigger to move the boat forward, the amount pressure on the
right trigger determines the boats speed.

Steer with the left thumbstick.

Releasing the right trigger results in the boat slowing to a stop.

The left trigger: toggles gears between forward and reverse.

TEST: Maneuver the boat to the yellow circle.  Start moving by pulling down on
the right trigger.  Adjust you direction with the left thumbstick so you're
going in the direction of the big "Go" arrow at the botton of the screen. Keep
moving until you reach the circle.

5.1.3 Trolling Mode
-------------------

Use trolling to fine tune your boats position.

In trolling mode you move the boat using the left thumbstick.  The boat moves
in the direction you holding the thumbstick.

TEST: Move the boat into the yellow circle.  Pull left on the left thumbstick
until the arrow is straight up, and then push up until you're in the circle.

5.1.4 Changing Boat Mode
-----------------------

When you first start on the lake your in engine mode. When in engine mode stop
the boat and press A to switch to trolling mode.

In trolling mode, press A to go to casting mode, or B to go to engine mode.

In casting mode, press B to return to trolling mode.

TEST: There is no test for this subsection.

NOTE: If your using a Handrow.  The modes are rowing and casting.  You control
the two oars individual using the left and right thumbsticks.  Rotate the two
thumbstick at the same speed in opposite directions to go forward (or back).

Rotate the in the same direction to turn sharply or vary their speeds when
moving forward to turn gradually.

5.2 Casting
===========

This section covering the different types of casts.

-------------------
5.2.1 Overhead Cast
-------------------

To perform and overhead cast:
Press and hold A to trigger the Timing Gauge.
Release A after the guage starts moving to cast.  Try to release when the
guarge is full.

If the cast is released to soon it won't go very far, if its released too late
it will fall short.

NOTE: The tutorial doesn't mention this but there's a variant of the Overhead
Cast called the Doublehand Cast.  To perform it press up on the d-pad andthen
go through the same motions as the overhead cast.  The doublehand cast goes
further and has a slower timing gauge than the overhead cast.

Thumbing the line
-----------------

If a cast is going to go to far you can thumb the line to get it to stop
sooner.  Push the A button to thumb to line after the cast has started. How
hard you press A affects the strength of the thumbing. This can be done with
any type of cast.

TEST: Make three sucessful overhead (or Doublehand) casts.

The timing guarge for the overhead cast fills up very quickly so you'll only
need to hold down the A button for a fraction of a second.  You'll get a
"Good" cast if you release with the Timing Gauge above 75%. (You may see
Excellent if the guage is very close to full.)

5.2.2 Sidehand Cast
-------------------

The side hand cast is used in strong winds for a low cast.

Press right on the d-pad and then go through the same motions as the overhead
cast.

Releasing the cast to soon cause the cast to go to the right, releasing too
late causes the cast to go to the left.

NOTE:  The tutorial skips a variation of the sidehand cast as well, the
backhand cast.  To perform the backhand cast, press left on the d-pad and then
go through the same motions as the overhead cast. Release too soon or too late
has the opposite effect from the sidehand cast.

TEST: Make three successful sidehand (or backhand casts).  The timing gauge
for either these casts fills up at the same rate as the overhand cast so time
the release accordingly.

5.2.3 Pitching
--------------

Pitching is short cast type use to fish in a specific area.

Press up on the d-pad and then go through the same motions as the overhead
cast.

If the cast is released to soon it won't go very far, if its released too late
it will fall short.

TEST: Make 3 Successful pitching cast.  The timing is the same as the overhead
cast.

5.3 Retrieve
============

Retrieval is the art of reeling the lure back in after casting in a manner
that tempts the fish to bite the lure.

5.3.1 Reeling
-------------

Press and hold the right trigger to reel, the pressure on the trigger
determine the reeling speed.  Don't reel in to fast.

If the line is not reeled after casting the line is in a free spool state
where theres no tension on the line allowing the lure to drop naturally.
Pressing the right trigger to start reeland cancels the free spool state.
Pressing the left trigger reenters the free spool state.

TEST: Reel with moderate speed.  Hold the right trigger with medium pressure
to reel the lure in.

5.3.2 Rod Actions
-----------------

Rod actopms are used to manpulate the lure to make it more tempting to the
fish.

Pushing up on the left thumbstick lowers to the rod. Pressing A draws the rod
towards you.  The amount of pressure you apply to A when you pressing affects
the rods angle.

TEST:  Use rod action.  Cast the line and start realing it in.  Push the left
thumbstick up and press A for the rod action.  You'll need perfore rod action
about 16 times, use a second cast if necessary.

5.3.3 Snags
-----------

On occassion your lure will get snagged on a structure, lake bottom, or weeds.
If a particular lure gets snagged several times in an area try switching to a
different lure.

Getting out of a snag
---------------------

Pull and hold the right trigger to reel and maintain tension.  Move the left
thumbstick to the upper right and press A to swiiing the rod.  Change the
angle of the rod by varying the pressure you press A with and switng the rod
to escape the snag.

The line may break if its not strong enough for the tension.  Adjust the
pressure on the right trigger if the tension meter glows red.

You can give up and use B to cut the line and lose the lure.

TEST: Recover from 3 snags.  Cast your lure, it will snag as you reel it in.
When it does pust the left thumbstick to the upper right and pepeated press A.
If the tension guage starts glowing red ease up on the right trigger.  The
snag should be escaped in a few seconds.

5.3.4 Bites
-----------

When a fish bits the controlled will vibrate and the lure will move to the
upper right of the lure window. (If you have there turned off in the options,
you have to watch to lure depth and line movement.)

TEST: Get 5 bites.  Cast out and reel in until you get 5 bites.

5.3.5 Hooking
-------------

Make sure the fish bites the hook "FISH" appears on the screen when the fish
is hooked and you'll enter fight mode.

To hook the fish, when you feel the bite press and hold the right trigger to
retain line tension and start reeling, move the left thumbstick to angle the
rod, and press A to swing the rod to set the hook.

Press A hard and quick for a quick hooking.

Press A slowly for a sweep hooking.

If done improperly the hook may come loose during the fight.

TEST: Hook 3 fish.  Cast out the line and reel it in.  When you have a bit,
press down hard on A to hook the fish.

5.4 Fight
=========

Fight mode has you realing in the fish after hooking it.

5.4.1 Tension
-------------

Pay attention to the line tension meter.

If the meter blue, there's no tension on the line and the hook may come loose.
Raise the rood and reel it in a bit.

If the meter is red, there's too much tension of the line and it may break.
Stop reeling and use rod action to maintain tension.

TEST: There is no test for this subsection.

5.4.2 Reeling
-------------

Rull and hold the right trigger to reel after the fish takes the hook.
Maintain tension while reeling.  When there's no tension reel quickly and stop
when there's too much tension.

If you real too forcefully may result in the line breaking or the hook
lossening.

TEST: Get a fish to bite you hook and reel it in. Cast the line and start
reeling.  When the fist bites set the hook and start reeling.  Watch the
tension as you reel the fish to the boat.

5.4.3 Rod Action
----------------
Use the left thumbstick to move thye rod during the fight.  Move the rod in
the opposite direction from the fish's swimming.

Keep the rod down and avoid pulling the rod to often as the fish may jump
loosening the hook.

For a large fish you may want to pull the rod by pressing A to change the
direction the fish is swimming.

TEST: Practice different rod actions.  Cast the line out and reel it in.  When
the fish bites, set the hook and start to real it in.  Push the left
thumbstick to the left or right depending to the direction the fish is
swimming.  You'll be prompted on screen when you need to move the thumbstick.

5.4.4 Landing
-------------

The fight get the fish to the boat, now its time to land it.

Small fish are landed automatically.

Larger fish need to be landed manually.  A landing marker appear when the fish
is close to the boat.  If the meter is white, the fish is still strong and you
should continue fighting it with rod actions.  When the meter turns red, the
fish is weaken and may be landed by pressing B.  There's a change the fish
will regain energy and the meter may turn which again.

TEST: Practice landing the fish.  This is essential the same as the rod action
test, except you see the landing marker when the fish gets to the boat.  Wait
for the marker to turn red and press B to land the fish.

This conclude the tutorial mode.

6. Lakes

6.1 Time
========

The clock moves at six time real time.  So a six hour tournament lasts for 1
hour real time. Free fishing can last up to 2 hours. Make sure you have enough
time available before starting an outing.

6.2 Lake Menu
=============

If you press the start button a menu pops up on the left hand side.

In single player mode the Xbox Live only commands: Start Competetion, Friends
List, and Player List are disabled.

Examine todays catch.  The fish you've catch today will be here.  If your in a
tournament only the fish matching the target specifications get put in here.

Available in a tournament only, this option will display the regulations for the
day's tournament.

Calls up to help system

User Info
---------

Displays your anglers information.

Leave Lake
----------

Weigh in and return to the main menu. In tournaments this concedes defeat for a
0 lb weigh in.

=============

If you zoom in the Big map by right clicking on the the map, your notice the
various grid sectors have been numbered.

Other features:

Rivers flow into the lake is Sectors 25, 29, 35, and 54.  Another flows out in
sector 32.

There are several small islands in sectors 27, 46, and 47, on the border of
sectors 50 and 56, and on the border of 50 and 54.  There are two large islands,
one spanning sectors 02 and 28, the other spanning sectors 23 and 24.

A bridge spans sector 43 over some deep water.

A strait runs north of pier 1, through sector 53.

Favorite Fishing Spots:
The rivers in sectors 54 and 32, in the strait in sector 53, and to the west of
the island in sector 02.

This for lake Ougi isn't layed out as nicely as lake Shieh, if looks something

Other features:

There are small man made structures in sectors 06, 13, 15, 17, 24, and 36.
There's also a large building in sector 18.

The are rivers flowing into the lake through control gates in sectors 24 and 25,
and one flowing out in sector 33.  Theres a dam in sector 17.

The are artificial inlets in sectors 19 and 37.  A partial opened control gate
blocks passage through a channel in sector 32.

There are short bridges in sectors 19, 32, and 37.  There are 2 longer bridges,
one spanning sectors 1, 2, and 4, and the other spanning sectors 21 and 33.

There are a couple of small islands in sector 35.

Favorite Fishing Spots:
Under the two longer bridges and in sector 32 between the bridge and the flow
control gate.

Favorite Fishing spots:
Just around the last bend to the north in sector 40, I've caught a Amur Catfish
in excess of 60 lbs here.

The tops of the dead trees can be seen in sectors 1, 2, ,3 , 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10.

Man made structure can be found in sectors 15, 33, and 38.

Rivers flow into this man made lake in sectors 1, 28, 32, and 40.

The dam hold the water in this lake spans sectors 23 and 24.

Rocks can be found in sectors 1, 18, 28, 32, 40, 41, and 42.

A bridge spans sectors 29 and 30.

6.4.4 Mirror Lake
-----------------

The sectors of Mirror Lake come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Here's a

Other features:

The main flood gates are closed in sector 41.  Smaller flood gates are closed in
sectors 14, 15 and 41.  There is a set of open flood gates in sector 38.

A small island is in the northwest corner of the lake where sectors 12, 32, 33,
and 34 meet.  Another small island spans sectors 7 and 26, its not possible to
travel on the north side of this island since the water passage is too narrow.

A very large island occupies the northern half of the map.  Pipes enter the lake
from this island in sectors 2, 3, and 4.

A river flows into the the lake in sector 17.

There are bridges in sectors 17 and 42, one spanning sectors 10 and 19, and
another spanning 11 and 26.

Favorite Fishing Spots:
I've haven't found any really good or really bad spots in the lake.  I've caught
Blue Catfish in excess of 60 lbs in sectors 38 and 48.

7. Fishing Tips

7.1 Stock up at the store
=========================

Before heading out onto the lake, make sure you have several of your favorite
lure.  This will prevent you from having to switch to an alternate lure in the
event of a line break or a snag you can't free the lure from.

7.2 Picking a boat
==================

When setting out on a tournament day choose the fastest boat (i.e. largest
engine) you have available.  This will allow you the maximum time for fishing
before you need to head in.

7.3 Pier Choice
===============

If you already know when you intend to fish, make sure you choose the closest
pier, to gain a few minutes of fishing time.

7.4 Locating a Fishing Hole
===========================

Thing to look for when scoping out a fishing hole:
Obstacles and weeds that provide cover for fish.
Structure providing shade
Moving water for its higher oxygen content.
Variations in the lake bed on the depthfinder.

NOTE: Dots on the depthfinder may be fish. The larger dots are larger fish.  If
you here a ping there's a really large fish. If you run across an area with a
lot of them try fishing there.

My record 63 lbs. 6 oz. was caught in sector 40 of Blueripple lake on 03/16
(professional tournament)

Even the smallest of these put up a tough fight.  If you have a fish that
doesn't jump and your haven't trouble reeling in, odds are its one of these.

I caught one of these on the eastern side on the small island in the northwest
corner of mirror lake during the Amateur 4th tournament.

I've caught two over these over 60 lbs. in sectors 38 and 48 of Mirror Lake. The
one in sector 48 was my record at 67 lbs. 15 oz. on 05/08 (Profession
Tournament)

7.5 Equipment Choice
====================

NOTE: If your using a soft lure that has a choice of riggings, the rigging may
be reset to the default on entering the lake from the main menu.  Select edit
tackle from the Lake Menu an

7.5.1 Lures
===========

The lures are divided in two categories: hard bait and soft bait.

The in game help database suggests using hard bait in wide areas to look for
bass.  However looking for dots in the depthfinder work just as well for
locating fish.

Types of hard bait: Pencilbait, Poppers, Noisy Plugs, Swishers, Darters, Frogs,
Jerk Minnows, Diving Minnows, Vibration Lure, Crankbait, Shad Plugs, Spinner
Bait, Buzzbait, Swimbait, Rubber Jigs, Metal Jigs, and Spoons.

The in game help database also suggests using soft bait in areas with bass. I've
found that fish will bite at soft bait more often then they will on hard
minnows.

Types of soft baits: Straight Worms, Grubs, Stickbait, Reapers, Tubeworms,
Paddle Tails, and Lizards.


My personal favorite, the pearl white lizard, I discovered thank to a post by
Anon Indie, on the official board for the game at:

The in game help says that the bass find the lizards two pairs of limbs
appealing.  As for the color choice, water tends to filter out the shorter
wavelengths of light, making those lures with colors that reflect the longer
wavelengths, white which reflect all wavelenghths and red at the long wavelength
end of the spectrum.

I've also seen a message board post at worldwidefishing.com relating a real life
fishing story which calls the white lizard the best bass lure.

The are various types of rigs that can be used with the soft baits: No sinker,
split shot, Texas, Florida, Carolina, Jighead, Drop Shot, and Wacky.  Not all
rigs are available for some types of soft bait.


I typically use the Carolina Rig with the lizard for no better reason than I
only have to press up once when selection the rig to deselect the no sinker rig.
Anon Indie's post recommends the Florida Rig.  The Texas rig could also be
considered as the help database call it "snagless", although I don't notice a
difference in the number of snags.

The white lizard is not necessarily the best lure to use it this game, but it
will see you through most of the 12 single player tournaments.  I used a blue
Short Minnow Type F in the Amatuer tournament in Lake Ougi for 2 wins there.

7.5.2 Line
==========

The choice of line will effect how many bites you'll get and how easily the line
will snap.

You'll suffer fewer snaps when you choose a heavy line but you also get fewer
bites as the fish are more likely to notice the line.

I prefer the 16-20 lb lines as I lack the finesse required for the lighter
weight lines.

For those wanting additional challenge go with the 2 lb line.

If your trying exclusively to land the really big fish or are having a lot of
trouble with line breaks, the 30 lb lines will give you the best chance.  Rainy
weather is a must for this line to reduce the visibility in the water.

The in game database tell you to choose the line type according the retrieve
method to be used:

Nylon for horizontal movements: Jerk Minnows, Diving Minnows, Vibration Lure,
Crankbait, Shad Plugs, Spinner Bait, Buzzbait, Swimbait and Spoons

Fluorocarbon for vertical movements: Rubber Jigs, Metal Jigs, and soft bait.

PE for topwater lures: Pencilbait, Poppers, Noisy Plugs, Swishers, Darters, and
Frogs.

Depending on how you retreive some of the lures they may fall into different
categories.

I generally ignore this advice and use Nylon for it's greater elasticity (which
I'd like to thing make it less prone to breaking).

7.5.3 Rod
=========

If your a novice, you'll probably want to go with the easier to use spinning
rod, which the help database recommends for lighter lures.  The bait casting rod
is recomended for heavier lures.

Rods have two other factors to consider taper and power.

The taper should be choose according the type of lure being used.

Vertical movements should use a fast taper.
Horizontal movements should use a regular taper.
Topwater lures should use a slow taper.

The power of the rod should be chosen to match the line strengh and lure weight
according to the help data base.

I completes ignored the advice on Taper and Power and just used the default slot
1 rod: Origin Rod C-65R-ML.  According to the help database I with a lizard and
16 lbs test line I should be usings an S-60S-M if there were such a rod in the
game.  C-65S-M or the pricey C-65EXS-M would probably by a better choice. After
switching to the C-65EXS-M (and 16 lbs. FC line) I found that fish were easier
to reel in, although the number of hook off has gone up (especially with
catfish).

7.5.4 Reel Choice
=================

Choose the reel that matches the rod you're using.  Don't use a spinning reel
with a bait casting rod or vice versa.

7.6 Casting
===========

I recommend using the Double Hand Cast (up on the d-pad when casting).  It's
slowly moving timing gauge allow more accurate casts.  The casts also go
further, you may want to cast at the halfway point on the gauge or thumb the
line to limit the distance.

If the wind picks up you will notice the lure in blown off course.  You may want
to switch to the sidehand or backhand cast in these conditions.  Choose the one
that will get you in the least trouble with you're most common timing mistake.

If you want a short cast in a situation where your getting a lot of pings under
the boat, perhaps the pitching cast is in order, although you could just tap A
with an overhead cast for a similar effect.  If your targetting some nearby
weeds or other obstacle use the pitching cast.

Instead of casting you can also drop the lure over the side of the boat by
clicking the left trigger.  Do this if you want to do some vertical fishing with
a jig, spoon, or soft bait.


=============
7.7 Retrieval
=============

Press and hold the right trigger to retreive the lure.  You can vary the speed
of the lure be adjusting the amount of pressure.  Rod actions can be applied
with the left thumbstick and A button to give the lure some additional movement.

The lure window will be green if the lure is being retreived corrected.  If its
red either speed up or slow down the retrieval or use some rod actions.

The best technique for retreiving the lure will vary from lure to lure.  Some
lures may give you a choice of multiple techniques.

7.7.1 Falling
-------------

After a lure hits the water, you can allow it to sink in the water if its a
sinking type.  Begin retrieval when the lure reaches the desired depth.

The lure can be allow to fall straight down in a free spool state, or you can
reel in a bit to remove the slack, making the lure fall in a curve to provide
some additional action during the fall.

Push the left thumbstick up to lower the rod, and press A repeatedly.


Jerking
-------

Move the left thumbstick and left and right quickly while using the stop and go
technique.


Bottom Crawling
---------------

Let the lure fall to the bottom and then start reeling in the lure.


Bottom Knocking
---------------

Allow the lure to hit the bootom.  Lift it by moving the left thumbstick down,
pressing A, and/or briefly pressing the right trigger before allowing the lure
to hit the bottom again.


Swimming
--------

Like bottom crawling, except using some additional rod actions by moving the
left thumbstick and pressing the A button.


Shaking
-------

Move the left thumbstick in small incremented while retrieving.

Walking the Dog
---------------

Move the left thumbtick to the left and right to get the lure to zig-zag while
retrieving.


Lift and Fall
-------------

Lift the lure and let it fall again, like in bottom bumping except the lure
doesn't hit the bottom.  If you're close to the boat, alternate between pressing
the left and right triggers.

7.8 Hooking
===========

When you get a bite, press the A button hard and hold it and then move the left
thumbstick quickly to the left and right to hook the fish. This should be
effective most of the time.

=========================
7.9 Fighting/Landing Fish
=========================

Once the fish is on the line you need to reel it in.  You need to pay attention
to the direction the fish is swimming and the tension on the line as you do so.

I've found I suffer far fewer hook off by keeping the A button held down
throughout the fight.  The fights seem to take less time when do this as well.

The tension meter is a 3/4 circle that if it were set on a clockface would go
from zero at 6 o'clock to maxed at 3 o'clock.  If the tensions stays at zero too
long the fish will hook off.  If the tensions maxes the line will break.

Try to maintain the tension between the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock positions.  If
it goes over that range, ease up on the right trigger, or click on the left
trigger to release the spool and put some pressure on the right trigger again
after a second.  If it drop below, pull harder on the trigger.  If the meter go
completely blue move the left thumbstick around to try to get some tension back.

Don't be hasty reeling in the fish, its better to tire it out at a fair distance
(10 - 20 ft.) from the boat, than to deal with the erratic tension an energetic
fish can cause when its close to the boat.

While your fight the fish, watch for the prompts that tell you to change the
rods direction and do so.  If possible, anticipate these by watching the
direction the fish is swimming.

Fish up to and including some of those at 2 lbs 3 oz. are landed automatically.
Larger fish much by landed manually by pressing B when the landing marker is
red.  It may be necessary to continue the fight for a while for the fish to
tire.

During a tournament you might not want to waste time on non target fish.  If you
can recognize the hook fish is not a target species, either by visual
recognition when it jumps or by its behavior (i.e. non jumpers are usually of
the Esox genus or catfish), you can let it go by clicking the left trigger to
release the tension allow it to hook off in a few seconds.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS:
-------------------

-The fish races straight towards the boat causing the meter to go completely
blue, possible hook off:

Reel as fast as you can and move the left thumbstick around trying to regain
some tensions.  You may be able to avoid a Hook Off if you can regain some
tension quickly enought.


-The fish makes frequent course changes near the boat possibly swimming under
the boat, causing the tension meter to become erratic, possible line break or
hook off:

Push the left thumbstick up and do some light pumping of the right trigger to
try to stabilize the tension.


-The fish is stuck on a rock, bridge support, shoreline, or other obstactle,
possible hook off.

Press the left trigger to release tension and hope the first swims out from
behind the obstacle.  Restore tension with the right trigger after a second.


-Times running out on the day and you're still fighting with a big one.
(Possible penalty/disqualification)

Either let the fish go by pressing the left trigger to release tension, or
continue the fight conceding defeat on the day.

7.10 Snags
==========

When you get snagged, put a bit of effort into saving the lure.  Pull the right
trigger, press A repeated.  Try rapidly rotating the left thumbstick in both
direction while holding A several times.  Don't waste too much time in a
tournament though,  if the lure doesn't free itself in short order, press B to
cut the line at reequip one of your spares.

8.2 On the lake
---------------

Once your on the lake move your boat around the lake in Engine mode to look for
a promising fishing hole.

Once you've located one go to Trolling Mode and position your boat.

Enter casting mode, and start fishing.  You won't get a bite on every cast so be
patient.  When you do get a bit, reel in the fish and land it to put in your
live well.

NOTE: Only the first 100 fish you catch will go into your live well, these are
the only ones you'll earn credits for so there's no point continuing to fish
after you've caught 100 fish.  Of course it takes about 10 hours of game time to
catch that many if you're getting bites almost every cast.

8.3 Weighing In
----------------

Once your done enough fishing either return to any of the three piers or select
Leave Lake from the menu to go to the weigh in.  You'll also weigh in
automatically if time runs on.

You get some credits for each fish in you're live well at weigh in.  The amount
will vary by the species and the weight of the fish.  The weight of the fish
when displayed is rounded down to the ounce, but the actual weight is used in
calculating the credits. The credit are rounded down when giving you your reward
for the fish.  This table gives the credit value per ounce base on those
assumptions and the possible margin for error given the data I had at hand.

9. Tournaments

9.1 Tournament Basics
=====================

9.1.1 Information and Set Up Screens
------------------------------------

When you select tournament you'll be taken to a tournament fitting your rank.

NOTE: If you have a saved  tournament season in progress you'll can choose to
continue it or start a new season.  If you start a new season your tournament
hi-scores will be erased (but not the stuff you've unlocked).  If you have
received professional status and start an amateur tournament you'll forfeit your
professional standing and will be unable to start a new professional tournament
until you finish in the top 50 amateurs again.

You'll view a schedule screen first which lists the dates and locations of the
seasons five tournaments.

The next screen list the details for the next tournament in the schedule.

The third screen list the rules for the day's tournament.

The four screen is a boat select identical to the one in free fishing.

The final screen is the pier select identical to the free fishing version.

9.1.2 Onto the Lake
-------------------
From here you go out onto the lake, just like in Free Fishing mode only with a
shorter time limit. Head to a potential fishing hole and start fishing.  Any
fish from the three target species that your catch will go into your live well.
Only the five biggest will be in the well, if you catch more than that the
smaller ones will be replaced.

You may notice that some fish seeming at the target lenghth don't end up in the
live well.  The regulations indicate "Greater Than" so fish at exactly the
target length don't qualify.  (There are no fractions of an inch length
measurement so some of the non qualifiers may have been rounded up.)  These fish
aren't going to win you the tournament anyways so don't worry about it.

9.1.3 Weigh in
--------------
Keep an eye on the clock when fishing to leave yourself enough time to return to
the pier for weigh to avoid a time penalty or disqualification.

Don't head in immediately after catching your limit.  Keep fishing to try to get
bigger fish to replace the smaller ones in you live well.

Unlike the Free Fishing, you can't select Leave Lake to weigh in.  You must
return to the pier you started from.

NOTE: The weight your opponents brings in highly variable.  What may get you a
win on one attempt may only get you in the top 10 (if that) on another.  I've
included the lowest and highest values I've observed in each tournament
description.  Depending on the tournament and the opponents luck, the weight to
beat could be anywhere from 10 lbs to 40 lbs.

9.1.4 Points
------------

You'll receive points towards your season total based on how you ranked on the
day.  The ones I know from the top 10 or finishing in that position.

Depending on how well you rank, you may unlock something and/or receive one or
more piece of equipment, make sure you have some open inventory slots for them.
You'll also receive credits for the fish in your live well just like in free
fishing.

There appears to be a prizes for winning, finishing in the Top 10, finishing in
the Top 50, and just for coming out.


You'll receive a major cash prize for finishing high in the rankings.  The cash
prizes for days and seasons are the same.

9.3 Amateur Fishing Challenge
=============================

The Amateur Fishing Challenge is the first tournament available to you.
You need to finish 50th on the season to advance to the next round.

The amateur season takes place over five days in September, October, and
November.  If by some change your unable to finish in the top 50 the date will
shift for the next attempt at the season.  (If you select new game the dates
will reset.)  There's no accounting for leap year so there's a seven year cycle.
There are different fixed weather conditions for each of the five tournament
days in each of the sever seasons in the cycle, the conditions repeat when the
cycles start repeating.

My First Season Results for Day 1: (8 lbs 9 ozs was good for 16th place)
I started from pier 3 and when to the river in section 35. Using the Basic Crank
Type F, I pulled in this mediocre catch.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler: (15 lbs. 14 oz.)
This this I started from pier 1 and started bottom crawling with a pearl white
lizard on 20 lbs Fluorocarbon in the narrow passage to the north.  I pulled in
an 8 lb 2 oz Smallmouth bass at the south end and a 2 lbs 7 oz Northern
Largemouthed bass there later in the day. Another Northern (2 lbs 1 oz) was
caught off the west coast of the sector 2 island.  Two small fish in those areas
rounded out the catch.

My Season Results for Day 2: (21 lbs 5 ozs was good for 1st place)

I start from pier 2, and when a short distance to the northwestern end of the
bridge in section 4.  Using the Origin Minnow Type F I got lots of bites early
on include a 5 lb+ Northern Largemouth Bass.  I lost that lure in a snag and
switch to an Origin Swishers which pulled in an 11 lb. Florida Largemouth Bass.
With three smaller fish these were good for 1 place.

SECOND WIN with new angler: I again used the blue Origin Minnow Type F on 20 lbs
Fluorocarbonand caught about 14 lbs. of fish. In a stroke of luck the highest
opponent only had 10 lbs 8 oz.

If only the big one hadn't got away.  Only 4 target fish were caught in this

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
Starting from Pier 1 I headed east to where a river empty into the lake in
sector 28.  Using the pearl white lizard on 20 lbs Fluorocarbon, casting into
the river I managed to pull in a 13 lb 7 oz Northern Largemouthed Bass and four
fish around 2 - 2.5 lbs.  I lost another larger bass when it hooked off on the
rocks.  22 lbs at weighin earn the victory.

My Season Results for Day 4: (11 lbs 1 oz earned 7th place)

I started from pier 1 and went to the bridge in section 42.  Using the Origin
Popper, I pulled in a 3+ lb. Spotted Bass at the western end. The Origin Popper,
the Origin Stick, and Origin Grub were used pulling 4 other fish in the
neighbourhood of 2 lbs.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
Headed north from pier 2 and use the pearl white lizard on 20 lbs Fluorocarbon.
Pull in a 6 lbs. 13 oz Northern Largemouth Bass to the east of the island in the
northwest corner. Another Northern Largemouth Bass at 5 lbs. 10 oz. pulled in
further south.  Three other qualifiers rounded out the catch at the winning 19
lb 8 oz.

My Season Results for Day 5: (12 lbs. 8 oz. was good for 16th)

Starting from Pier 3, I headed over the northwest side of the island in sector
2.  Using the Origin Grub and Origin Stick in caught three decent sized Northern
Largemouth Bass (2lb 5oz, 3lb 7oz., and 3lb 10 oz.) as well as smaller
Smallmouth Bass and Spotted Bass.  I had another large one hooks that managed to
slip free.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
A short distance north of Pier 3 is a stream flowing out of the lake under a
wooden building.  Casting the pearl white lizard on 30 lbs Nylon into the stream
I pulled out two respectable fish: an 8 lb and a 7 lb 6 oz Northern Largemouth
Bass.  Three smaller fish include a 2 lb 8 oz off of pier 3 rounded out the
catch at 22 lb 8 oz beating a much lower than average (for this tournament)
second place angler.  This days catch would have been insufficient for many of
the results I've seen.

9.4 Pro Fishing Challenge
=========================

The Pro Fishing Challenge is the second tournament available to you.
You need to finish 50th on the season to participate in the Masters Tournament
at the end of the season.

The professional season takes place over five days in March to June.  You'll
start in the season after your last Amateur season, so if you qualify in your
first Amateur Season you'll start in professional season 2. Every time you
complete the pro season (and the following Masters seaon if you finish in the
top 50) the dates will shift for the next attempt at the season.  (If you select
a new profession season game the dates will reset to season 1.)  The number of
the subsequent season increase by 1 (or reverts to 1 from 7) from the previous
Professional season if you didn't finish in the top 50, or from the preceding
Masters season if you did.

Like the amateur seasons there's no accounting for leap year so there's a seven
year cycle.

points to the winners 394.  Two pathetic days with beautiful fish of non target

Leaving pier 1 and testing out bottom crawling with a pearl white lizard (fish
seem to bite on these at least every second cast), pulled in my first Walleye on
the northern boundary in section 49 as well as a person record for a Blue Gill,
is follow the southern boundary fishing it the reeds catching a couple of
qualify, albeit small Spotted Bass.  Moving to the first bridge in the eastern
channel, my first cast pulled in an 8" 12 oz Northern Largemouth Bass, the next
cast pull in another that just qualified.  Unfortunately I snapped the line on
another big one losing my last white lizard.  Other bottom crawling lures seems
less effective. Lost another big fish in another snap.  Settling for the four
fish, I still managed fourth.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
This time I left from pier 1 at started fishing in the southeast corner of
sector 48 using a pearl white lizard on 30 lbs Nylon.  I pull in a 13 lb 14 oz
Florida Largemouth bass here and three qualifying Northern Largemouth Bass
before moving the the northeast corner of the same sector to catch a qualifying
Spotted Bass. The weight of 21 lbs 11 oz. provided a win over the distant second
place angler.

I could have sworn Channel Catfish was on the list, I pull out a 28 pounder on
the boundry between sectors 8 and 9 bottom crawling with a pearl white lizard on
30 lbs Nylon. Only two qualify fish bottom crawling in various locations with
the same lure. Also pulled in my first Rainbow trout in the northern part of
section 14.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
I was only scouting for pontential hot spots for a serious attempt here, but
I'll take my wins when I can get them. Starting from pier 2 I explore the
various inlets before catching an 9 lb 3 oz Smallmouth Bass among the rocks in
sector 18.  Another small qualifying Smallmouth was caught here as well.  After
getting frustrated with several just under qualifying Northern and Florida
Largemouths I headed back toward the pier.  Since there was still an hour or so
left on the clock I tried fishing in the relatively shallow waters in Sector 39
near there border with Sector 10.  I hooked into an landed a 17 lb. 10 oz.
Florida Largemouth Bass here.  The 28 lbs 3 oz. weight for the 3 fish was more
than enough to win.

A 21 lb Musky pulled in the deep water in sector 35.  Four qualifying fish two
from bottom crawling in the middle of the lake, and two from the river in the
northeast corner.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler.
Just north of pier two is a river flowing into the lake.  Using the pearl white
lizard on 16 lb Nylon (high test lines result in very infrequent bites for this
outing) I pull in 4 Northern Largemouth Bass between 3 lbs. 8 oz. and 3 lbs. 11
oz. and a Spotted Bass at 4 lbs 2 oz. for a weigh in of 18 lbs. 7 oz. and the
win.

(At least two other attempts had higher weighing but so did the opponents.)

4 qualifying Spotted Bass from working the easter channel towards the bridge,
including a 4 pounder.  No large fish pings detected in the areas I surveyed.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
A great day of fishing, I laid anchor just to the southwest of the "4" in sector
48.  Using the pearl white lizard on 16 lb Nylon, I caught 1 Northern Largemouth
and 2 Florida Largemouth all in excess of 7 lbs.  Two smaller Spotted Bass
rounded out the catch at 24 lbs. 14 oz. giving a victory over the distant second
place competitor.  The real highlight of the day was the 67 lbs. 15 oz. Blue
Catfish caught at the same location.

Bottom crawling with the pearl white lizard under the same bridge I fished for
the Amateur tournament.  5 decent sized (3-4 lb) Northern Largemouthed Bass
caught.  I could have used that 11 pounder from the Amateur tournament, I was
only 4 pounds shy of 1st. My first brown trout pull in under the bridge.

WINNING ATTEMPT with new angler:
Another great day of finish.  I fished in the artificial inlet in sector 32
using the pearl white lizard on 16 lbs. Nylon.  I caught a 16 lbs. 14 oz.
Florida Largemouth Bass and a 9 lbs. 4 oz. Northern Largemouth bass here.
Another large bass hooked off earlier in the day.  3 other Northern Largemouths
over 3.5 lbs were caught bringing the weigh in to 37 lbs 2 oz.  Other notable
fish with a 40 lbs. 6 oz. Channel Catfish and a 23 lbs 9 oz. Amur Catfish.

Bottom crawling with the pearl white lizard in the narrow passage north of pier
1, pulled in a 10lb 9oz Smallmouthed Bass at the northern end.  Moving to the
western shore of the sector 2, casting away from the shore, pulled in a 6 lb. 9
oz. Northern Largemouthed Bass, and 3 other qualifying fish.

SECOND win with new angler:
I was all over the map with this one.  Two decent sized Spotted Bass (4 lbs. 6
oz. and 3 lbs. 14 oz) came out of the river flowing out of the lake north of
pier three.  A couple of Smallmouth Bass, one 2 lbs. 15 oz. and a smaller one,
were caught to the northeast of the sector 2 island.  Another smaller Spotted
Bass came out of the narrow passage north of Pier 1.  The 12 lbs. 13 oz. weighin
was good for a narrow win.

caught near the reed to the south of pier 1.  A 5 lbs. 10 oz. Northern
Largemouth Bass was caught in the river north of pier 2 as was a 5 lbs. 11 oz.
Smallmouth Bass.  Two small fishing caught in those areas rounded out the catch
at 19 lbs 2 oz. for the win.

In Game Description: A subspecies of the Largemouth Bass.  Fishermen target it

In Game Description: Aptly named, the Bluegill has dark-blue marking around

In Game Description: It characteristic feature is its 4 mustaches.  Is
omnivorous, sometimes eating small fish when it reaches adult size can reach

Amur Catfish

In Game Description: Has a long body with a flat head and its characteristic
"mustaches". Omivorous. May exceed 100 lbs.

Blue Catfish

In Game Description: Similar to a catfish, but with a blue body.  It eats
living fish, so it may respond to a lure.  Lives in clear stream waters with
gravel or sandy beds. Usually reaches 60 lbs at 50 in. long, but may exceed
100 lbs.

Brown Trout

In Game Description: Has a green/brow head and back, yellow/brown sides, and
may feature cinnabar spots.  Fishermen value it for beauty and power.  It's a
strong fighter, but slower than the rainbow trout.  Can reach 3 ft. at 30 lbs.

Brook Trout

Length: 18 inches

In Game Description: its main features include a wavy body pattern when viewed
from above, and violet sports along its sides.  lives in deep waters with high
oxygen levels.  Can grow to be 18 in. long and 10 lbs.

Channel Catfish

Scientific Name: Ictalurus Puctatus
Length: 18 inches

In Game Description: Comes from the Mississippi river area.  The adult is
mostly black, but younger fish may have black spots covering its body.  Also
call the Spotted Catfish.  Eats dead fish on the river bed, so it may respond
to smelly bait.  Can reach 50 in. and 60 lbs.

Chain Pickerel

Length: 16 inches

In Game Description: Resembles the Northern Pike, bu has a long narrow body
encircled by bright spots.  Smaller the the Pike, reaching 31 inches and 10

In Game Description:  Head and back are greenish brown. Side are light
greenish brown or yellow brown.  Light spots cover its body.

In Game Description: The largest member of the Pike group, this fish can grow
to be 62 in. in length, and about 65 lbs. will attack and eat snakes,
waterbirds and mice in addition to other fish.

In Game Description: This polar fish lives in the central US as well as
throughout Canada and Alaska.  Its sharp teeth allow it to latch onto prey.

In Game Description: Lives in streams and river backwater with muddy or gravel
beds.  Differs little from the Walley except for its smaller size.  Rarely

In Game Description: Similar to a bass, but has a silver body with 7-8 vivid

areas.  surprisingly, it chases bait day or night.  Can grow to 6 ft. and 120
lbs.

Walleye

Scientific Name: Sander Vitreus
Length: 14 inches

In Game Description: A fresh water fish with a yellowish gold body and pearl-
like eyes.  It is sensitive to light so hides during the day behind rocks and
weeds.  Prefers cold water.  Can grow to be 25 lbs.

Crappie

Scientific Name:  Promoxis Annularis
Length: 12 inches

In Game Description: A popular game fish, and targetted by lure fishermen.
Lives in waters around 59 F and isn't very active at low temperature or times
of drastic temperture shift.  Can reach 12 in. and 5 lbs.

Perch

Scientific Name:  Perca Flavescens
Length: 12 inches

In Game Description: A freshwater fish which lives in cold waters.  Has
beautiful features, but resembles the Sychri group more the the Lates.  Its
body color changes to silver as it grows.  Can reach 14 lbs. in weight.
