I. Introduction

Welcome to the Player Rating FAQ, written by Rashidi.  The purpose of
this FAQ is to update the ratings of the players in the game, to make
them as accurate as possible, as well as to represent what they
accomplished in the 2002-2003 season, and to educate others on the NBA.

Also, I must make something clear.  I have since edited players after
posting them on the initial Player Rating FAQ topic.  I have not posted
all the ratings changes on the topic, so though you may have used
changes from the topic, those changes may or may not be the same.  I'd
suggest checking all the players to see if they match yours.  I didn't
edit many players, so it shouldn't be a very big deal.  Any further
editing adventures I have will be listed in the version updates
section.

II. How do the ratings work?


First of all, what do the ratings do?

Overall - The numerical gauge of the player's total abilities.
Close Shot - Two-point shooting accuracy (inside the paint).
Medium Shot - Two-point shooting accuracy (outside the paint).
3pt - Three-point shooting accuracy.
FT -Free Throw shooting accuracy.
Layup - Layup accuracy, frequency, and creativity.
Dunk - Dunk accuracy, frequency, and creativity
Handle - Crossover ability.  Higher rating also means it is harder to
steal the ball while the player possesses it.
Pass - Ability to pass the ball from one player to the other without it
getting stolen.  Higher rating also means more speed on the pass.
PostOff - Effectiveness of offensive post moves
PostDef - Effectiveness of defending a post player.
Block - Ability to block the opponent's shot.
Steal - Ability to steal the ball from the opponent.
RebOff - Ability to grab offensive rebounds
RebDef - Ability to grab defensive rebounds
Speed - How fast the player runs down the court
Stamina - The rate of which players grow tired.
Durability - The player's resistance to injury
DefAwr - A player's defensive intelligence (defensive ability)
OffAwr - A player's offensive intelligence (executing plays, handling
the ball)

III. How did I calculate the ratings?

A lot of it was common sense.

At this present time, I will not reveal this in its entirety.  When the
FAQ is done (and plagiarism is no longer an issue) I will add this
section.

IV. The ratings

Ratings will be done in descending order, from highest overall, to
lowest overall.  This should work best, because the top players are the
ones most of you will want to edit first.  Doing it by team is bad,
because players change teams a lot, especially in the offseason.

If you want to find the ratings for specific players, Ctrl + F is your
friend.  Seriously.  If you ever complain about not being able to find
something in an FAQ, it means you are computer illiterate, because Ctrl
+ F is very easy.  Press the Ctrl key.  Hold it.  Then press F.  Then
enter the name of something you are searching for.  Make sure you can
spell it correctly.

If I've asterisked (*) a player, it means they announced their
retirement.  If you plan to use that player, I've adjusted his ratings.
If you plan to follow roster changes for next season, reduce him to 50
in all stats and release him.

Notes: Puts up an amazing 21/6/6.  He does have a flaw though.  He's
not a PG.  He puts up way too many turnovers considering his assist
total is only 6.  So why doesn't he make the switch?  His best friend
Cuttino Mobley plays SG.  If Francis switches, Mobley gets traded.
While putting friends first is an admirable quality, it's not going to
get him any rings.  Should be very interesting to watch this year.
Jeff Van Gundy will probably want to utilize Yao a lot more, which
could result in Francis' scoring go down, but for the better.  JVG is
also a Pat Riley defense freak, so I wonder what he'll think about the
Rockets, who were one of the worst defensive teams in basketball.
Could result in Mobley being dealt, and Francis moving over.  Stay
tuned.

Notes: Where to start... One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.
The all-time leader in assists and steals.  1,000 assists in a season
has only been accomplished 9 times, 7 of them by him (the other 2 by
Kevin Porter and Isaiah Thomas).  Led league in assists a record 9
times.  Stockton winning the assist title was as much a given as MJ
winning the scoring title.  His career FG% of .515 is the fourth
highest for a guard in NBA history.  His 14.5 apg in a season is the
highest mark ever, and probably will not be eclipsed unless there is a
significant rules change.  Same goes for his record 1,164 in a season.
Went to the playoffs in all 19 of his seasons.  Even this year, he
still managed 7.7 assists (fifth in league) in only 27.7 minutes.  If
you're wondering, that makes him first in assists per minute by a large
margin.  Before becoming a full-time starter, his numbers were still
remarkable.  Rookie year: 5.1 assists in 18 minutes.  Second Year: 7.4
assists in 24 minutes.  Third year: 8.2 assists in 23 minutes.  Fourth
Year (finally as a starter): 13.8 assists in 35 minutes.  Retired this
year with 19,711 points, 15,806 assists, and 3,265 steals, with career
averages of 13.1 ppg, 10.5 apg, and 2.2 spg

Notes: Don't be fooled by Bibby's low assist total.  He shares the
court with Webber, Divac, and Christie (who all rank very high in
assists at their positions), and he has the sixth man of the year
backing him up.  Back with the Grizzlies, Bibby was averaging 8+
assists per game.  He was traded for Jason Williams.  What did J-Will
do with the Kings?  He only averaged 5 apg.  What is J-Will doing now
that he's not with the Kings, who rob his assist total?  He's averaging
8+, just like Bibby was.  Derek Fisher put him on the map.

Notes: J-Will, not to be confused with Jay-Will.  One of the most
exciting players in the league.  Has much improved since his Sacramento
showboating days.  Still showboats, but no longer commits turnovers.
Had the second highest assist to turnover ratio in the league, only
behind Kevin Ollie (which means he had the highest ratio among starting
PGs).  Was second in the NBA in assists per minute, only behind John
Stockton.  Second in assists per game, only behind Jason Kidd.  You've
gotta believe he'd be first if he got a couple more minutes per night
(only 31.7 mpg).  Has three-point range, but that's it.  If he can
develop a better offensive game, he's surpassed Mike Bibby in my book.

Notes: Became Dallas' leader in the playoffs.  As much as the Mavs
needed a SF, he'll be missed.  Sure, he came off the bench for two
years.  But he's still as good as Gilbert Arenas.  He's certainly a
much better passer.  The only question is his durability.  Back when he
was with LA, he was talking about retiring early because of his bad
knees.  Being on the bench in Dallas helped prolong his career.  He
shouldn't get that many minutes this year, even though he'll be
starting again.  Probably around 30 minutes.  You won't hear Speedy
Claxton complaining.  NVE hates playing on bad teams as much as Latrell
Sprewell, so the ride won't be without bumps, and Golden State would
probably be wise to move him to a contender ASAP to take advantage of
his high value.  Then again, if the Warriors played in the east, they'd
be in the playoffs.  They have 2 decent centers, one of the better
rebounding PFs in the league, a star PG, a rising SG, another quality
SG off the bench, and the third pick from last year who should relish
Jamison's PT and NVE's run and gun style.  But unless the Blazers
decide to dismantle (probably not this year), they don't have a shot in
the west.

Notes: Jay-Will's career is in jeopardy after a serious motorcycle
accident this summer.  He carries with him the jinx of the number 2
pick, which dates back as far as Sam Bowie.  Bowie was famously drafted
before MJ.  Other #2 pick gaffes are Shawn Bradley before Penny, Darko
before Melo, Bibby before VC, Dirk, Jamison, and Pierce, Keith Van Horn
before Tracy McGrady, Marcus Camby before Stephon Marbury, Ray Allen,
Antoine Walker, Danny Ferry, taken ahead of Sean Elliott, Glen Rice,
Tim Hardaway, and Shawn Kemp, Steve Francis (forced a trade to Houston
for less talented players) before Baron Davis, Lamar Odom, Wally
Szczerbiak, Rip Hamilton, Andre Miller, Shawn Marion, Jason Terry, Ron
Artest, and the list probably goes on.  Other #2 picks have not come
out unscathed: Len Bias (died in car accident after being drafted),
Alonzo Mourning (developed kidney disorder), Antonio McDyess (has had 3
knee surgeries in 2 years, also taken before KG).  The last two #2
picks that ended up being the best player in their draft classes were 2
Oakland PGs, Jason Kidd (thanks in part to Grant Hill's injuries), and
Gary Payton.  Anyway, getting back to Jay, the PG position often takes
more than one season for a young guy to learn, so this accident means
we may never see how good Jay Williams could have been.  Oh, and he
changed his name to Jay from Jayson because Jayson Williams the former
Nets star shot his limo driver with a shotgun a month before the draft.
Rashidi doesn't miss a beat.

Notes: French.  That gives him some points in my book, but he needs
more assists.  Decent scoring PG, average distributor.  Still, most PGs
struggle in their first year or two in the league, and Parker thus far
has not struggled as much in comparison (Gary Payton did not score in
double figures until his third season).  He's going to need to improve,
because he gets abused by bigger PGs like Stephon Marbury.  Got upset
that the Spurs wanted Kidd, which would have meant a bench role for
Parker.  Poor baby.

Notes: Will probably retire due to injuries.  Was traded to Atlanta
because his expiring contract provides cap relief.  Only eighth player
in NBA history under six feet tall to be named an all-star.  Rarely
turned the ball over, had amazing assist to turnover ratios.  In his
last year, 01-02, he had 8.3 assists per game to go with 1.34 turnovers
per game.

Notes: By far the most underrated player in the video game.  Even
coming off a bad season, I don't see how Sega thought it fit to rate
him lower than Brent Price.  Then again, they saw fit to make Allan
Houston a terrible shooter too, so maybe they're just trying to keep

60 overall for Eisley is just ridiculous, considering they gave a 70 to
Frank Williams.  Did they forget he was Stockton's backup during the
finals run, or that Eisley's three-point accuracy, assist to turnover
ratio, and assists per minute have consistently ranked among the top
10-15 in the league when he's not benched in favor of Mark Jackson?
Eisley hadn't missed a game since 95-96 either, until his third string
assignment.

contender.  Didn't show it last year... John Stocton and Mark Jackson
toyed with him after Don Cheaney boasted that "he wasn't worried about
Frank being able to handle the slower veterans".  He had one good game
where he hit 3 three pointers and had 11 points, which kept his ppg
from being below 1.0 this year (subtract those 11, and he had 17 points
in 21 games).  His FG% was .273, beating out the likes of Tshkilvili
and Wagner for the title of worst shooting rookie.  In all fairness, he
DID miss training camp with an injury, but he has waive written all
over him, especially when Milos Vujanic decides to rear his head in NY.

house.  How did I come to know about Lamar Odom?  Back in the day, we
were talking about what NBA players we'd met.  My friend who was in
ninth grade at the time, and went to Christ the King HS, said "Lamar

Notes: Did Detroit give up on White early, or did White give up playing
basketball early?  Wasn't he supposed to go earlier than ninth in the
draft?  MJ loved the kid, he was considering trading the first pick
(Kwame) for someone good so he could move down and draft White.  Now,
he's a mess.  What do we know about White?  On the worst team in
basketball, he managed these numbers as a starter in 19 games.  10.9
ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.9 apg with a .399 FG% in 27.5 mpg.  He certainly isn't
a Ricky Davis stat padder.  I also assume he changed his position to SG
now, which is kind of perplexing.  He's 6'9 and 230 pounds.  Shouldn't
he be playing SF?  And with these kinds of advantages, why is he not
being successful at posting up smaller guards?  He's the biggest guard
in the entire NBA, and he can't even shoot 40% as a starter?  For what
it's worth, he was also third in the NBA in Turnovers per minute.

28.0 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.3 bpg, 529 fg%.  Conference Finals -
28.0 ppg, 16.7 rpg, 5.8 apg, 3.0 bpg, 569 fg%.  NBA Finals - 24.7 ppg,
15.4 rpg, 5.3 apg, 5.3 bpg, 495 fg%.  Absolutely insane.  In case you
are wondering, Duncan's assist totals exceeded Tony Parker's assist
totals in each round of the playoffs.  Definitely the heir to Shaq's
kingdom, and unlike Shaq, he didn't jump ship and screw over his former

It's not so much that Yao was markedly better, but the voting wasn't
even that close.  What did Amare do that was markedly more effective

V. Created Players

Upon request, I'll rate certain players.  Rookies, or former NBA
players.  If you have a request, e-mail me.  But keep in mind that I
don't watch college basketball, so accurately making a CAP for a rookie
may take some time.

On the concept of "Players adjusted to a certain year", this is there
because often players want to cap players from, you guessed it, a
certain year.  A popular request seems to be the Chicago Bulls.  As
most of us know, Jordan in the game is not the same player as the
Jordan who won 6 titles.  In fact, Jordan was a different player during
his first 3 titles than he was in his last 3.

Other players suffer setbacks in their career, and aren't the same.
Larry Johnson for instance, was a bonafide superstar when he came into
the league, and then back injuries killed his career.  Some people will
want Charlotte LJ, some will want NY LJ.

Shawn Kemp and Vin Baker are players in the league that also used to be
good, but aren't very good right now.  These are all just examples of
what can appear in that section.  Of course, Rashidi doesn't have all
the time in the world (though it's sometimes hard to tell), so he'll
get to these when he can.  As said, e-mail me with suggestions.

Oh, and lastly, I don't care about CAP appearances.  I don't make them
so don't bother asking me how to make Lebron's face and such.  A player
will still play the same, no matter what his hair looks like.

Notes: If you don't know who Drazen Petrovic is, he's only the best
European player to ever play in the NBA (pre-Dirk).  His career was cut
short by a tragic auto accident after only his fourth NBA season.  In
the 92-93 season for the Nets (who recently retired his jersey), he
scored 22.3 ppg, had a .518 FG% (.449 3PT%) and shot 87% from the line.
The Croatian team led by Petrovic (who averaged 25 ppg), Toni Kukoc,
and Dino Radja placed second in the Barcelona Olympics, behind the
famous Dream Team.  In fact, they were the only team that was able to
get a lead against the Dream Team after 10 minutes into the game.  For

(21k/5k), Dave Bing (18k/5k), Bob Cousy (17k/7k), Clyde Drexler
(22k/6k), Walt Frazier (15k/5k), John Havlicek (26k/6k), Magic Johnson
(17k/10k), Michael Jordan (32k/5k), Oscar Robertson (26k/9k), John
Stockton (19k/15k), Isaiah Thomas (19k/9k), Jerry West (25k/6k), Lenny
Wilkens (17k/7k).  That's 15 players, ALL of whom are on the NBA's
greatest 50 players list.  The other two are Derek Harper (16k/6k) and
Reggie Theus (19k/6k).
Karl Malone (36k/5k) also achieved the milestone this year, while
Scottie Pippen (18k/6k) got it the same year as Hornacek.  Gary Payton
(18k/7k), Terry Porter (15k/7k), Tim Hardaway (15k/7k), Rod Strickland
(14k/7k) have all gotten there since then. Jason Kidd (9k/6k) will
probably make it in 3 years, while Mark Jackson (12k/10k) will probably
fall short (he would need 3 years).
I am in absolute shock and awe at Hornacek's elite company.  I've
certainly got a newfound respect for him now, and hopefully you do too.

VII. Depth Charts

Here I'll list the depth charts of the NBA teams, so you have a good
idea of where to put them in your "Team Lineups" screen.  You may not
realize that where a player is placed on the bench affects the rating
of the team.  Bobby Jackson in the top bench slot affects the team's
rating more positively than he would if he were at the bottom of the
bench, or on the IR.  Also, I am going to be placing players regardless
of position.  Some players have incorrect positions in the game, and
unfortunately, you can't edit position.  For instance, Latrell Sprewell
is technically a SF, and Wally Szczerbiak is technically a SG, but this
season Spree will be a SG, and Wally will be a SF.  I will also include
players that are not in the game, to make it as realistic as possible.

Answer: Like I said, I don't make appearances.  I'm sure there are
websites you can find via a search engine that provide appearances that

Question: Why do you have to make the rapist, Kobe Bryant a perfect
99?  I mean the Lakers didn't even make it to the conference
finals with him and Shaq.

Answer: Actually, he is higher.  He is 101, but the highest the roster
screen will say is 99.  If you start a game, and check his rating (with
normal biorhythm) he'll be 101.  However, this is not my fault.  If you
give McGrady IDENTICAL ratings to Kobe, Kobe will STILL have a higher
overall.  I don't know why this is, though I speculate there may be
some unchangeable hidden ratings (Clutch, for instance). Overall is not
important at all, the ratings are, and Kobe is nearly identical to
McGrady (in fact I'd prefer McGrady in the game).

Answer: Probably Seattle.  It's not that I don't like them, it's just
that NY hears very little newsworthy about them.  I haven't even seen a

wait, I think I saw Lewis once when the Knicks played Ewing and the

Answer: Darius, you need to go back to high school and learn some basic
math.  You are 4 for 52 on three pointers in your career.  You were 1
for 19 in your rookie year, 3 for 19 in your second year, and 0 for 14
last year.  Those numbers would make John Starks proud.  When you are
shooting three's at less than 8% accuracy, most people would stop
jacking them up.  I hope you don't wonder why your FG% keeps dropping.
Stick to your rim rattling dunks, and pray extra hard.  Pray that King
James (aka Darius Miles WITH talent) passes the ball to you enough to
remind the excitement-deprived Cleveland fans of what Shawn Kemp was
"supposed" to be for them, or else you will be waived ala Harold Miner.

I would like to continue doing this for the next basketball sim that

to, as I was 100% busy the first half of the week, and then had a virus
scare the second half of the week.  Everything's back on track though,
it's just a matter of time...

Version 1.4 (8/23/03): Added the Depth Charts section.  Added Donald
Royal.  Edited Desmond Mason, Rasho Nesterovic.  This is the smallest
update so far, as I've been busy lately.

XIV. Closing

This is my first time using the 2k series.  Prior to this, I'd been
with the EA Sports brand, which dates back to NBA Showdown (92-93,
prior to the Live series).

I have not decided if I will do this FAQ next year, or if I will do it
for the 2k series (now known as "ESPN Basketball").

One of the initial problems I had with this FAQ is I'd never done
anything like this, and had to figure out ways to do it on the fly.
Assuming I do this again next year, things will go much faster, since
I'll already have experience on what to do and not do.

Once this is completed, I'll be very satisfied that I was FINALLY able
to finish one of my many long-term projects.
