MechAssault is an awesome game.  It is the main reason why I bought an Xbox
in the first place.  I noticed there weren't any in-depth FAQs about the
weapons and defense mechanisms, so I decided to write this one.  While the
game doesn't have a very large selection of weapons to choose from, it helps
to understand the purpose of each device in order to be able to decide what
weapon to use against what enemies at what time.

My name is Cody Bishko.  I live in Alberta, Canada.  I have always had a
passion for gaming and writing about games, and I want to become some kind of
gaming-related writer in the future.  I have an odd knack when it comes to
electronics, especially computers and other high-tech devices.  I play a lot
of games in my spare time, especially on my PlayStation 2.  I currently own a
PC, PS2 and Xbox, and consider myself a hard-core console gamer.  I am
interested in Audio/Visual entertainment (DJing, professional lighting, etc),
but my budget keeps me away from such hobbies.

The version history is used to keep track of all the updates made to this
document.  Most people don't look at it, but I personally appreciate it when
software designers and other FAQ authors write a version history so I can see
what has been changed over time.  If you're like me, go ahead and go through
it, but if you are like most people I know, just skip to the next section.

          ¯¯¯¯¯\¯¯¯¯¯                        Energy Weapons   \
                ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Energy weapons are mostly used against quick moving targets at a mid to close
range.  They require stored energy in the 'Mech, which is indicated by the
red energy bar located on the bottom right of the Heads-Up Display (HUD).
When an energy weapon is fired, the bar drops and then has to charge itself
up again.  Once fully charged, you can fire your energy weapons again.  To
quickly select your energy weapon on your 'Mech, hit (X) on the controller;
or cycle through the selections using the left trigger.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.11  \  Pulse Laser                 /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Pulse Laser is a low power energy beam that has a very high rate of fire.
It is most effective against quick moving 'Mechs, ground vehicles, jets, and
helicopters.  They are also very effective against the quick Elementals.
Accuracy depends on how well you can track the target.  Hitting anything that
is a long ways a way can be difficult, especially if you are moving.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.12  \  Laser                       /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This is the standard laser beam.  When fired it projects a long beam of
energy with a limited tracking ability, which can cause damage even if your
target  has moved.  It has a longer reload time than the pulse laser, but
more power.   This weapon is best used at a medium to long range against slow
to medium speed 'Mechs.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.13  \  Particle Projection Cannon  /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Particle Projection Cannon (PPC) is a very powerful energy weapon.  It is
basically a ball of energy with slight seeking capability.  Its main
drawback, like the Hammer Missiles, is its charging time.  To fire, make sure
the weapon is selected and pull the right trigger until the weapon is charged
(Aim on HUD is blue).  You don't have to charge the weapon fully before being
able to fire, just as long as it is blue.  The PPC is effective at all
ranges, and has an excellent accuracy.

          ¯¯¯¯¯\¯¯¯¯¯                     Ballistic Weapons   \
                ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Most 'Mechs incorporate Ballistic Weapons.  The only thing you have to do is
put the targeting reticle over your target and fire.  Most Ballistic Weapons
don't produce much heat, so they are a great way to make your 'Mech stop
overheating while still staying on the offensive.  Press (Y) to quickly
switch to the Ballistic Weapon, or cycle through your choices with the left
trigger.

                _________________________________________
                \  1.21  \  Machine Gun                 /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Machine Gun has the highest rate of fire in the game.  It produces
absolutely no heat, so it is the best weapon to switch to if you find your
'Mech is overheating.  It can be very devastating when used at a close range,
but useless at a long range.  It is the most effective weapon to be used
against buildings and infantry.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.22  \  Autocannon                  /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Autocannon is a direct-fire weapon, so it doesn't have any tracking
abilities.  It has a fairly slow rate of fire, and creates a fair amount of
heat.  Damage is moderate to heavy, depending on range.  It is best suited
for close to mid-range combat with slower 'Mechs.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.23  \  Gauss Rifle                 /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Gauss Rifle is a very powerful ballistic weapon.  It has a very slow rate
of fire, but it is very accurate to a huge distance.  It creates very little
heat, so it can be used while dispersing heat like you would the Machine Gun.
(1.21).  At level three, it has the ability to knock the target 'Mech off its
feet, giving you a chance to attack without taking damage.

          ¯¯¯¯¯\¯¯¯¯¯                        Missile Weapons   \
                ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Missiles are the most widely used weapon in the game.  Before firing
(excluding the Hammer Missile), you should make sure you have a target lock-
on, or you will probably miss your shot.  To lock-on, simply hold the
crosshairs over your target for a few seconds, and when the crosshairs go
red, you're locked-on, and you can fire away.  You will loose your lock-on if
the reticle is moved off the target for more than a few fractions of a
second.  Missile weapons cause a lot of heat, so when things are starting to
melt down, it's advised that you switch to a ballistic weapon.  To quickly
select the Missile Weapons, hit (B) on the Xbox controller, then fire away!

                _________________________________________
                \  1.31  \  Crossbow                    /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Crossbows are best used at a short range.  They cause decent damage, have
a high rate of fire, and cause little heat.  They have heat-seeking
capabilities, but they can't change their course very easily.  When fired
from a 'Mech that has many turrets, it is possible to fire up to eight
separate missiles at once (with the missiles power-ups).  This, plus the
ability to target multiple enemies at once, makes it very effective against a
large horde of enemies.  It is very effective when there are a lot of
infantry running towards you, or a convoy of light tanks.  Just remember to
get target lock before firing.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.32  \  Hammer                      /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Hammer Missiles are deadly, but they lack the most needed seeking
feature.  They are entirely dumb-fire, which means you have to really make
sure you've got a sure shot, because these take forever to load.  Similar to
the PPC, you must hold down the right trigger until the clock symbol is at
max and is flashing.  If you let go of the trigger, it will fire, but the
timer set on the missile will be set to detonate earlier, most likely
exploding in mid-air.  This weapon is very effective against tough stationary
targets, or 'Mechs who get stuck.  The missile will stick to the target, and
from there wait to detonate.  It has a very large splash radius that will
damage any other enemies that are around the target when it blows up.
                _________________________________________
                \  1.33  \  Javelin                     /
                 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Javelin Missiles are long range missiles and cause moderate damage.  They
feature tracking ability, so its accuracy is incredible.  They have a good
splash radius, but create a lot of heat.  The most you will see on a 'Mech is
four.  These are very effective against heavily armored tanks and enemy
'Mechs.
