02: THE GAME - INTRODUCTION
=======================================================================
"Patience is the key"
It's about football, and it's about managing the team of your choosing
to the glory. If you're reading this and haven't played LMA Manager
yet, do so as soon as possible. Everything else will fade.
"Endless possibilities"
It's also about discovery, finding the players you love, improving your
squad to world class level via tactics and formation *you* have created
This is but a guide to you, take the tips as recommendations, not what
you must do to succeed. Making it on your own will give you more.
=======================================================================
03: SQUAD
=======================================================================
==================
GENERAL SQUAD TIPS
* Try to use as many players from one nation in your squad.
- Improves moral
- Possible friendships help your team
- Mother language plays a part as well (not as much as nation)
(e.g. English and Australians can become friends as well)
* Try to use only 3 or 4 foreign players in your line-up.
- At least two from the same nation if possible
(see above about friendships)
* Make sure your best attacker plays on the left side of your attack.
The left attacker usually scores more than the right attacker.
* If possible, sign only young players (under 23, under 19 is better)
- They train faster, and you can use them for ten years or more
- However, don't throw all your old ones away (more on this later)
* Stats of players in the first squad train raise much quicker than
those don't play as many games -->> Players you want to train
should be in your first team (See TRAINING for more).
# COMMENT
# On skills
# The Key skills below are in a order of importance, you can't live
# without the first two or three, but the rest can be weaker for that
# position
===========
GOALKEEPERS
* Key skills
- Shot stopping
- Diving
- Agility
All goalkeepers skills should be relatively high, but if you have to
pick something, these are the ones.
=========
DEFENDERS
* Key skills
- Tackling
- Marking
- Pace
- Passing
- Heading
- Position
- Forward Runs (Left and right back)
===========
MIDFIELDERS
* Key skills
- Passing
- Creativity
- Tackling (especially defensive midfielders)
- Forward Runs (attacking midfielders/wingers)
- Dribbling
- Technique
- Heading
- Shooting (especially attacking midfielders/wingers)
=========
ATTACKERS
* Key skills
- Shooting
- Heading
- Position
- Forward Runs
- Creativity
- Dribbling
- Technique
- Pace
Set your best CF on the left (if playing with 2 attackers). It does not
matter if he is right footed or left, but it's always preferable.
=============
PLAYERS ROLES
(Captain, penalty taker, free kicks, etc.)
-------
CAPTAIN
* Use a DEFENDER or ATTACKER as a captain & not a midfielder.
Your squad in LMA04 needs consistency. A captain is the most
important player. Usually the midfielders have to rest.
Goalkeepers, Defenders & Attackers can usually play all season all
games 90 minutes straight. This is due to fitness reasons.
Usually only a MF (LM,CM,RM)((LB,RB)) needs substitution. It doesn't
matter if the captain is a foreign player (morale has to be high).
-------------
PENALTY TAKER
* Use ATTACKER with penalty skill as penalty taker
More goals improves the rating of the player (and helps you get those
end of season awards)
----------
FREE KICKS
* Use ATTACKER with free kick skill as free kick taker
See above (improves rating + more goals for him)
+ Attacker usually has better shooting attributes than a MF.
-or-
* Use (attacking) midfielder with decent shooting (with free kick skill
even better) as free kick taker. Top this with good passing, and he
will set your CF's up from free kicks. (not all free kicks are direct)
# COMMENT
# About penalties and free kicks
# Attacker usually has the best shooting skills. Moreover and deeper
# analysis shows that when a striker scores his form increases. So this
# is an opportunity to improve form, rating and morale by giving the
# penalties and free kicks to your attacker (and scoring some :)
---------
PLAYMAKER
* You can go for couple of options here
(once again, feel free to experiment)
Be warned, if the playmaker has a bad day,
your team might have one also :(
(0) Don't use playmaker
OK and default option. No explanation needed.
(1) Use your best attacker as a playmaker. (i.e. the left attacker)
He gets the ball more often means more goals for you..
Why? The CF is the last pion in your attack. Using the playmaker option
will lead in more ball possession to this CF. So you are able to create
more shooting options and more chance to score goals.
(2) Use the best passing (attacking) midfielder as a playmaker
Top the passing skill with int and creativity and your strikers are set
If the AM has decent shooting, you just might see some goals as well
(3) Use the left/right wing as a playmaker
If you have a top winger, set him as a playmaker (and set play your
distribution at wings). And sit back to see those crosses fly.
Note! on midfielders as playmaker
a MF needs substitution often and substituting your playmaker can
lead to disturbance & inconsistency in your team. Moreover, you might
not want to attract too much attention playing in midfield, if you want
to go forwards, not sidewards (direct attacking instead of patient).
-------------
CORNER TAKERS
* Use left/right winger when possible
(with corner specialist skill if available)
In LMA04 a right footed player should take a right corner.
In LMA04 a left footed player should take a left corner.
It works out for your team to score more this way as vice versa.
(i.e. left footed player takes a right corner)
----------
MAN MARKER
This is probably the most difficult part in LMA04.
It seems that no one has been successful with this one.
Why? In LMA04 when watching a match & using a man marker you will see
that whatever that man is doing, he won't do it proper.
The man marker will follow his target, but he is always to late & he
will only focus at this task & that's why he will move very awkward on
your screen & that's why he won't be able to do his regular tasks,
which will screw up your attack and will lead to many conceding goals.
But if you want to go for it, go for it.
My guess is that the most important skills are.
- Marking
- Pace
- Tackling
===============
MORE ON PLAYERS
* Don't worry about old age
players will not play worse, because of age. Old players actually help
your team, as they don't use up training points, so your younger team
members train faster. And old players are sometimes better or as good
as the younger players.
---------------------------
ABOUT HEIGHT OF THE PLAYERS
Height is important, e.g. if your attacker is only 1.68 with perfect
heading skills, he still loses a header fight over a 1.90 defender
with terrible header skills.
The same goes for goalkeepers and defenders who are trying to clear
those aerial threats. Taller players help on midfield as well.
When you watch the game, see who is losing the air competitions and
see if it because of height (check the opponent players).
Of course, good heading skill is important. Tall player with terrible
heading skills can win in the air, but the ball won't go where you want
it to go.
===========
YOUTH SQUAD
Keep an eye on your youth squad (at least at the end of each season,
see if there are some good prospects).
You should especially pay attention to the stats you can't raised
with training. These are:
Pace
Intelligence
Temperament
+ Potential (check training reports every month)
If your youth squad have a player with (nearly) max stats in these
"non-trainable" stats, sign him, train him, and give or loan him to
get first team football - and in the years to come, you'll get a
decent (or even great) player out of him. Patience is the key.
The above is true especially with the young goalkeepers,
see eL MAgico's words of wisdom below.
-----------------
YOUNG GOALKEEPERS
eL MAgico on Codemasters Forum - LMA Manager - Hints&Tips
"In LMA'04 the option of promoting youth players to your squad don't
pay off. This option doesn't work proper. So never sign or only sign
youth players on a temporary contract. However, goalkeepers can make
the squad do wonders, if you know how to do it.
If there is a youth goalkeeper available, with ( nearly )ultimate
personal skills, i.e. Temperament & Intelligence and with excellent
agility skills you MUST sign him. ( Don't look too much at the other
skills, i.e. handling, shot stopping etc. ,they will improve ! )
Obvious the younger & taller! the goalkeeper is the better one for you.
Okay, you bought your superstar. Train him yourself.
Always train yourself! Set training at 0:30 hrs for each skill.
Your young gun will start improving & his skills will improve very,
very fast. (Check training report every month)
If you want to fasten your goalies skills you can play him.
As with every player in your squad, the best training is playing in the
match . However, your goalie is inexperienced, and very young, so this
will affect his abilities. But if the match allows it, play him.
I only have two goalkeepers in my squad. No more are needed.
In a small squad (keepers) abilities will improve more than in a large
squad. I use 11 decent players, 4 decent subs (including keeper), and
3 rubbish OLD players. Why old players? Because of their age they won't
improve, so more "training points" will be added to your young star.
If you sign a goalkeeper in year A, no new youth players will be added
in that year. At the start of year B, new youth players will be added.
My tip: buy at the end of the season all the youth goal keepers.
At the beginning of the new season you sell them & three new guys will
take their old position.
1. It gives you money
2. It improves the chance of getting that young gun.
Conclusion from my own experience: I use young goalkeepers in every
game I start. I put them on the bench for 5/6 years.
They improve to 70%. Then I put them on the number 1 position and in
4 more years they are about 100%!!!
And they will be useful until they are 37 years of age, because their
abilities won't decline. And because I signed a english player, moral
is sky high & his friendships with others do my squad also good.
Maybe he will start complaining about his unhappiness in the first
years, but don't worry, show them who is the boss & he will stay."
=======================================================================
04: TRANSFER MARKET
=======================================================================
- Buy young (16-25, preferably under 21)
- Pay approximately 1.5 x the value of the player
- Sometimes relegation release is a good way to get the player to
accept the contract
- Use short list
- Scout everyone you are interested in
- Pace, intelligence and temperament can't be raised with training
------
SEARCH
Search recommendations (more and less trivial tips)
- search for young players (16-20 or 16-25)
- use wage limit
- the wage budget limits you more than the transfer budget (value)
- don't forget to set the search option for specific specialty
- e.g. if you are looking for a free kick taker
- search for out of contract at the beginning of each season
- search for loan listed players
--------
SCOUTING
Looking for new players is a bit easier in normal mode (versus expert),
as you can check the overall.. But you should always scout (and get the
best scouts possible).
In scout reports, the first thing to look is Pace, Temperament and
Intelligence - as these won't go up in training. Next, the potential -
It should be better than good (e.g. very good, excellent, world class)
After this the other stats. If the pace isn't good you usually should
move on to next one (use consideration here, the other stats might be
too good to miss). After scouting 5+ players, go for the best for the
position you're looking the new player for.
---------------------
(RE)GENERATED PLAYERS
After the first season, the game generates players to fill up the
player base every season, as the old ones retire.
Game replaces certain "star players" with (almost) exact replicas (same
field position(s), specialist skills, Nationality and foot preference,
only thing that differs is the age and the name of the player.
The (re)generation only happens in computer managed teams, sadly not
yours. There are some world class players that are not regenerated,
when they retire, but most are.
The Regens appear in the team that they retire. For Example, Figo and
Zidane retire in the same season, the following season, there should be
2 quality players in the team, one that's an attacking Portugese player
and the other's a French wonderkid with the same key skills as Zidane.
Of course, you can find really good "normal" generated players as well:
Some (generated) young players have very good stats (this is over 90% /
9 bars) in key areas. So at the start of each season, I go to transfer
market, and search for young players (16-20), and add the wage limit
I'm looking for (started from Div 3, so the budget is not too big).
I always look for 18 (or younger) year old ones. I also prefer tall
players.
For example I found a 195cm striker, with 95% pace, 75% temp and intel,
95% shooting, 95% heading and the other stats are not that bad either.
And 192cm left back, with 100%pace, 80% temp and intel, 95% tackling,
85% marking, 70% passing. The striker had wage of £1800 and the left
back £4800. Both with excellent potential - I wonder, why my youth
squad doesn't generate ones like these? After couple of seasons,
they're both at about 70% overall now, and doing great (as the most
important stats are 100%), and still very young. Works for teams coming
up from lower divs.
=======================================================================
05: TRAINING
=======================================================================
=====================
GENERAL TRAINING TIPS
- Relegate training to yourself (off from head coach)
- Train heavy off-season, light on season
- Pressing team tactics makes your player tire faster, as does
counter attack
- You can change to normal/heavy training everytime your team is at
(almost) full fitness. e.g. Change to heavy, if you have a two week
cap between matches, and the team is at full fitness after five days
- Keep on eye on fitness level (over 80% is fine)
-->> Rest your players if needed. Set first team's training to 0:20hrs
each (GK's, subs and reserve don't need "resting")
- If there is only 1-3 days between matches,you might encounter problem
with your player's fitness, as they can't recover quick enough
-->> Set the training bias to light, fitness and almost full team
(not individual that is). Remember to turn the bias back towards
individual after the match (and players are at full fitness again)
- Check the green and red dots on training to see that your doing OK
- Change between general and advanced training bias 15th of every month
- Stats raise much quicker if you use the players in games.
-->> (Young) Players you want to train should be in your first team
-->> Keep old players as subs and reserve (unless so much better than
the young, that your team will perform better).
El Magico wrote on Codemasters Forum - LMA Manager - Hints&Tips:
"Actually, it's the combination of all the different training aspects
to use at a time, because if you focus only at some, other attributes
will decrease!
The overall bars will improve in training over time. If you train your
players faster, the overall bars will improve with the same speed.
The sum of the improvements on the attributes will have results
(and increase) on the overall bar.
The best method to train them is set stronger individual training bias
set training intensity to heavy and to use a managerial controlled
individual training. Set rates on 0:30hrs each, or specify.
Make sure the players train at least on every aspect a certain time or
attributes can and will decrease. It's important to relegate the
training yourself. The assistant staff won't be that punctual.
If a certain player is tired, in the monthly training report the coach
will say that the player will have fitness worries. Maybe he could be
struggling in training therefore. However it doesn't affect the
training improvements if the player is a bit tired. I found out that
whatever the coach says about struggling or fitness about a player,
that player still can improve.
But to make sure you give your player the best conditions, play your
player until his fitness drops below 80%. Rest him, play him again,
he will improve as fast as possible, play him again, rest him, etc.
Too much drop in fitness & a player will face injuries!"
=================
TRAINING SCHEDULE
- Set training rates on 0:30hrs each (or make small adjustments)
- Leave 0:20hrs minimum to each, or stats might decrease
- Make sure your players know your tactics and set bias towards
individual after that (start all the way from team when you start the
game, and move one tick towards individual every month).
-->> Your teams tactical rating will rise quickly, especially if you
have a decent/good head coach. This will most propably result in
better results in matches.
- Don't set the bias to full individual (e.g. keeping 1 from max is OK)
if you have even one player in the team not with full tactical rating
* Field Players (Defenders, midfielders and attackers)
Stamina --> stamina
Box work --> shooting, heading, marking
5-A-side --> tackling, passing, marking
Crossing --> forward runs, positioning, heading
One-on-One --> dribbling, technique
Advanced --> creativity, positioning, technique and forward runs
* Goalkeepers
Stamina --> stamina
Box work --> shot stopping, aerial
5-A-side --> diving, shot stopping, distribution
Crossing --> awareness, distribution
One-on-One --> diving, handling, agility
=======================================================================
06: TACTICS
=======================================================================
- Always train the tactics you are playing.
- When you change the tactics (e.g. at the beginning of your game),
change the training bias to full team, and move towards individual
when your players get better with your tactics.
The most important thing is that whatever team tactics you set, stick
with it. As your team's tactical rating goes up, so will the
performance. (at least keep for one season, several is better).
You can change the formation (position and individual focus as well),
but keep the team tactics you settle for. Patience is the key.
After some time, your players will have (almost) max tactical
rating (except for new players, of course).
# COMMENT
# On Tactics
# 4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2 seems to do the job for most, but there really is
# not one killer tactic in this game. So if you like, just go with
# 4-3-3 and leave the position and focus edits for control fools :)
============
TEAM TACTICS
--------------
Counter Attack
If YES, team will charge forward as quickly as possible when they see
a opening. If the possession is lost, the oppising team
-------
Defence
Players sit back, and wait for the opposition to come forward (which
might leave room for counter attack)
- or -
Or players push up to put opposition under pressure (tackle them, or
make them make mistakes)
Pressing can get the ball back quicker, but it does tire your team more
(eats fitness). Sitting back (deep) conserves fitness, and might make
room for attack, but also might let the opponent have their chances.
-----
Focus
The difference between playing defensively and is pretty obvious.
Defensive can be safer, but more aggressive focus can mean more goals
for you (offence is best defence?)
-------
Passing
Short passes are more safe, but slower. Long passes can create more
chances, but with the risk of losing the possession more easily.
Weaker (lower division) teams should probably go more on short passing,
as it helps to keep to possession, which means less opportunities for
the sometimes-too-skilled opposition.
------
Attack
Direct attack goes for the goal, when even a smallest chance is seen.
Patient wait for the opening, make passes back to defence, etc.
------------
Distribution
With center distribution, the play is built up directly from the center
of the field (more vertical/diagonal passes versus horizontal)
Going more for wings, means more forward runs by wingers, and more
crosses to box (more diagonal/horizontal passes versus vertical).
The distribution should somehow reflect your formation and players.
e.g. have good wingers - go more on wings, etc.
==============================================
EXAMPLE CUSTOMIZED FORMATIONS AND TEAM TACTICS
I give some successful examples here. Feel free to experiment.
----------------------------------
(1) Formation: 4-3-1-2
Source : Codemasters Forum - LMA Manager - Hints&Tips
Originator: El Magico
* Position edit
- Move your AM position 7 ticks back (full)
- Move your two CB's position 7 ticks back (full)
* Focus
(optional) Focus left attacker up (in lower divisions)
(optional) LB&RB focus back, if beaten by wingers and crossings
* Team Tactics:
(El Magico)
Defence +1
Focus +1
Passing -1
Attack +3
Distribution +3
Counter attack yes
(Zemalf)
Defence +1
Focus +1
Passing -2
Attack +3
Distribution +1
Counter attack no
* Other tips
If there is a red card in your match, sacrifice your AM.
His role is minimum versus the others.
When you set your CB backwards in position edit and your conceding
goals will drop. Why? Watching the game learns that a defender coming
up to an attacker has larger chance getting the ball if he would run
after an attacker. Don't worry about offside, because the chance of
getting a conceding goal is smaller using this tactic.
If you like, use a defender as CM (defensive midfielder) with
midfielder skills off course. Do this especially if you focused him
backwards.
------------------------------------
(2) Formation: 4-4-2 a.k.a The Perfect Tactic
Source : Codemasters Forum - LMA Manager - Hints&Tips
Originator: Spurs Forever
# COMMENT
# About The Perfect Tactic
# This tactic has worked very well for me, so I can recommend it
# without hesitation. Should work on every level.
* Position edit:
CB's 2 ticks back
LB/RB 2 ticks up
- or -
CB's 1 ticks back
LB/RB 3 tick up
(choose which winger goes for goals, or both)
RM 6 ticks up (-1 from max)
LM 3 ticks up
- or -
RM 3 ticks up
LM 6 ticks up
- or -
RM 6 ticks up
LM 6 ticks up
CM's 2 ticks back
CF's 6 ticks up
2 ticks out (for left CF 2 ticks to left, and vice versa for right)
* Focus edit:
(choose which winger goes for goals, or both)
RM focus left and up (Northwest if you will)
LM focus up
- or -
LM focus right and up (Northeast if you will)
RM focus up
- or -
RM focus left and up (Northwest if you will)
LM focus right and up (Northeast if you will)
CF's focus up
- or -
CF's focus infield (Left CF Northeast, Right CF Northwest)
* Team Tactics:
Play with "best" tactics
-->> in tactics training; the "white man" over the "yellow man"
=======================================================================
07: MATCH DAY
=======================================================================
==================
GENERAL MATCH TIPS
* Watch the match yourself.
You are in more control now and your coaching skills can affect the
result. e.g. use pressing skills if you're on the lose. But wait as
long as possible, because of the fitness of the players.
===============
DUGOUT COMMANDS
Depending on your basic tactic and focus, these can vary, but the
following are the most useful in most cases (and the ones I use).
* Left wing attack & Right wing attack (left and right triggers)
Gives you more options to control the game
* Keep Ball (white button)
Makes your team play it safe at the last minutes when you have the lead
* All out attack, direct, counter (black button)
For that last (desperate) charge to get that equalizer
Don't go overboard with dugout commands -
Only use one dugout command every 15 minutes
(more will confuse your team)
===========
SUBSTITUTES
* Try to substitute one player during half-time & the other 2 during
60 minutes.
* Only substitute for fitness reasons
* If possible, save 1 substitution you can use in case of injuries
Very important in matches where overtime and/or penalty shootout is
possible (e.g. some cup matches). --> See the next one also
* Don't change your penalty specialists out if penalty shootout is a
possibility (or substitute one in at the last minutes)
-----
Joker
The Joker is a player who scores after he is substituted in (e.g. at
60 minutes). He is a striker (or and attacking midfielder at least),
and you want him to score when he comes in (e.g. to equalize).
+ The striker (or AM) must be good (shooting, etc.)
+ He should be very quick (pace) + full fitness of course
+ Your team focus should be attacking, and direct.
+ That individual player should be focused up, and possible move
position up as well
+ Make him the playmaker
-->> At best, the opponents defenders (and midfield) are tired (dropped
fitness), and in comes your lightning quick, technical player who runs
circles around them, and makes that needed goal.

08: BEST PLAYERS
=======================================================================
Probably the most Frequently Asked Question is:
"The best striker/midfielder/defender/goalkeeper?"
- or -
"I need good players for div 1/div 2/div 3.."
So here you go. The suggestions from the Codemasters community forums
NOTE! the prices and the teams are the one's you see when you start
the game (1st July 03). These are prone to change as you progress on.

# It would be best if you can confirm that the scout reports inform the
# potential to be 'world class', or even better if you bought the player,
# and over the years he actually got to world class.

09: TEAM SPECIFIC GUIDES
=======================================================================
The Swansea City Guide and the East Stirling Guide offer general tips
for any lower division team, so check these even if not going for
these teams.
==================
SWANSEA CITY GUIDE
Originator : Zemalf
Swansea is a decent pick, if you want to start from English Division 3.
Expectations are (only) to finish at TOP16, so you don't sacked even
if something goes wrong.
Every time you start a game you should do the following
(actually these go for any team I think, in division 3 that is)
NOTE! This is before you advance any day!
----------
1. Check Staff
+ Relegate everything to yourself
(except maybe treatment decisions in case of injuries, that you can
leave to physio)
+ Get the cheapest assistant man. and commercial man. as possible
+ Get the cheapest physio you can.
+ Get the cheapest head coach as possible
+ Get good mixture of (better) coaches for GK,Def,Mid and Att.
+ Leave Fitness instructor as it is on the season 1
(or get slightly better if the budget gives in)
The result of this action -->>
You get better results from training, and other tasks you can deal
yourself. Head coach is tough one, but as you want to schedule training
yourself, only training reports will not be as reliable as possible.
----------
2. Check scouts
Check if first scout (your "next opponent" scout) is max in tactical,
and (at least) decent in player judgement. If not, check if there is
better scout available (use first empty scout slot to do this)
- if there is, fire scout 1, and hire the better one, and start the
'scout next opponent' task again
The other two scouts (your "player" scouts) should be max in player
judgement, tactical players only (very) minor role. So check if there
is better ones available, fire the old one, and hire the better to
replace him
The result of this action -->>
Scout reports on next opponent are reliable, and your player scouts
actually have a possibility to catch that next superstar
----------
3. Set Tactics
Go with the one you like.
I went with my customized 4-3-1-2.
* Formation
4-3-1-2
* Position edit
- Moved my AM position 7 ticks back (full)
- Moved my two CB's position 7 ticks back (full)
* Focus
- Left CF focus up (not in all games)
* Team Tactics:
Defence -1 (reserves fitness, can go with +1 as well)
Focus +1
Passing -2
Attack +3
Distribution +1
Counter attack no
----------
4. Set Training
* Handle training yourself (don't leave it to head coach)
* Train light on season, heavy off-season
* Change between general and advanced bias on 15th of every month
* Set 0:30hrs to all training aspects
* In case of fitness problems, set 0:20hrs to each
You might want to do this for first team from the beginning
(Always train GK's, subs, and the rest of team at 0:30hrs each)
* Always train team tactics you play
Set individual-team to full team at start, and move it towards
individual as your team gets better with your tactics
(leave it at 1 or 2 from max individual)
----------
5. Sell unnecessary players and/or put in transfer list
Put together a team you could play with.
(best players you have for each position)
You should sell the unnecessary load, and look for improvements to the
first team (if you defence is weak, look for defenders, etc.).
If you have good old players, don't sell right away.
Players under 25 have a potential to grow better, so keep that in mind
(for older than that, there isn't enough time). Old players are usually
better than the young, so they help at the beginning + rest of the team
trains faster as old players don't use up the training points.
If you have trouble selling someone, stick 'him on a Free Transfer, and
when you get a club interested, reject their offer and put him back on
the transfer list. Sometimes this results in an offer within a week. Or
you can just accept the free transfer offer, if the player's value
isn't high.
If this doesn't work, at some point you might want to release some
players (you'll have to pay compensation.)
I suggest you look for a team of about 18-20 players
(11 for first team + 5 subs + 3 for reserve/rotation)
This way you have enough material, and your players train relatively
fast (having older players help the younger).
** For Swansea, keep these players (in order of importance)
First team:
Trundle, Connolly, Britton, Maylett
Subs:
Johnrose, Nugent (Both decent old players)
Possible subs / first team players:
Coates (old, but quite good winger/midfielder)
----------
6. Start looking for improvements (players that is) to the team
Figure your squads weak spots and start from those. If you lack good
defenders, you probably should get some, and the same goes for other
positions as well.
For Swansea, check these players:
(= add to shortlist and buy as soon as possible)
D.Clare
S.Opinel
G.Thompson
P.Morgan (possibly won't join you 1st year)
N.Moore
A.Themwell (unavailable 1st year)
P.Reid (possibly won't join you 1st year)
N.Dixon
N.Lamey
M.Collins
N.Lenagh (if you didn't keep Coates)
Adding the players to your short list is important, as some other team
might also bid for some of these players, if this happens, you are
informed (as the player is in your short list), and you can make a
bidding of your own (bigger than the others).
Don't mind if you don't have the money, you can delay the other teams
this way until you require the needed funds (sell unnecessary players
to get the money).
If a player doesn't want to play in your team or is unavailable
because of first year contract, leave them to your shortlist, as you
are likely to want these the next year (hopefully in the div 2)
This tip for lower divisions teams from Ramarama (especially for div 3)
"Don't forget to check the relegated teams each season, the top wage a
divison 3 player will be on is £2k a week, and Tranmere for one very
often go down - they make great signings for teams with not much dough"
----------
5. Combine your first team + 5 subs
---
*** The first team for Div 3:
D.Clare L.Trundle (CF)
Connolly (AM)
S.Lenagh / Coates (LM) Maylett (RM)
Britton / M.Collins (CM)
S.Opinel (LB) N.Moore (CB) B.Dixon (CB) Robinson (RB)
Thompson (GK)
* Player Roles:
Moore as the captain, Clare as the penalty shooter,
Connolly took Free Kicks, and wingers took corners.
Sometimes went with Clare as playmaker.
---
*** The first team for Div 2:
D.Clare L.Trundle (CF)
Connolly (AM)
Prutton (LM) Maylett (RM)
Britton / P.Reid (CM)
S.Opinel (LB) N.Moore (CB) P.Morgan (CB) Themwell (RB)
Thompson (GK)
Also played Opinel as LM, and Reid as LB (Prutton as a sub)
+ rotated quite a bit to keep the fitness up
* Player Roles:
As in Div 3, but Morgan as the captain.
---
*** The first team for Div 1:
The first season in div 1 might be a bit problematic, if your
wage budget is still bit low (it probably is :)
Buy some good player(s) you can afford, and do everything to avoid
relegation (the team from div 2 can possibly take you far, but you
never know)
When the wage budget is big enough (can afford the 5K-10K wages),
go for Rivaldo (young), and possibly D.Ashton.
You might also consider changing the formation if you like:
4-4-2 The Perfect Tactic by Spurs Forever works nicely,
especially with Rivaldo on right wing going for goals.
---
*** The first team for Premier League:
If you got this far, you probably don't need more advice :)

EAST STIRLING SURVIVAL GUIDE
Source : Codemasters Forum - LMA Manager - Hints&Tips
Originator : Ramarama
If you're up for a challenge, go the East Stirling Way (pick the worst
team, and try to make the best of it). You probably need all the help
possible, so here's some guidance from Ramarama.
Ramarama wrote:
"East Stirling
Geez this team are pants.
But here is the guide to survival...
1. Go to the stadium screen, look for investors, build the best stand
possible at the north end on day 1.
2. Search for all players 3 bars or more on wages of less than £250,
create a short list of any on £150 better than your team.
3. As you have little money and no wages release 1 or 2 players with
only 1 or 2 years left on their contracts, this should allow you
to buy 1 or 2 players in.
4. Have a go but it is likely that the better players on your list
won't join you yet. Matthews is a quality striker who will sign
straight away, but for the rest aim a little lower, midfielder
Polworth and a 36 year old RB/CD whose name I forget will sign up
immediately (a couple of these are £20,000 players so you will need
to bid £30,000 to get them)
- players from Scottish non-league obviously have lower standards,
but this should allow you to bring the likes of
Petterson (GK)
Robinson, Dixon, Moore, Linighan, Scott, Cheyne (Defenders)
Lenagh, Collins, Butterworth, (Midfielders)
Ure (Striker)
5. It is a steady process of sign one, sell/release one to build your
team, be aware that you only have until the end of August before the
transfer window shuts. Players that you should probably allow to
leave are that better than average right back and center half.
With what money you make you can also release 1 or 2 and sign 2 It
might also be worth sacrificing the better then average striker and
midfielder too, I wouldn't have thought they would be too much use
in the long term anyway. I know they're young but there's no point
planning for the future if you don't keep your job in year 1.
Those more adventurous of you may sacrifice the only good player
you've got for the greater good, but I figured I'd struggle to sign
anyone that good for a few seasons and kept hold of him without
compromising my team too much.
My team by the transfer window was:
Pettinger,
Linighan, Dixon, Moore, Cheyne, -That good player who you already have,
Collins, Butterworth, Lenagh,
Ure, Matthews. Robinson, Aitken, Scott Polworth, Todd
and a few youth players make a pretty good selection of back up players
The team has major trouble defending which I hope it will get over and
also problems scoring - Burt/Lampey/Eastwood are targets in January
when they become available, and I will weigh up then how is best to
free up the money to sign them, Aitken seems an obvious choice as Ure
cannot be sold for a year and he hasn't set the world alight.
