+++ MY KINDA MUSIC: SMOOTH AND SOULFUL +++
There were very few quintessential artists/groups that harbored the
New Jack Swing sound and did it right. I'll list some of my personal
favorites and hope you'll understand my frustration since they were
blatantly left out of the game.
--COLOR ME BADD
Sure, VH-1 mocks this band and their sound but back in 1991 they were
the second biggest group in the world (behind Boyz II Men). And anyone
who remembers the early 90's can remember how huge their popularity
grew after songs like "I Wanna Sex U Up", "All 4 Love", "I Adore Mi
Amor" and "Thinking Back" were released (I sure do). Also, don't forget
their hit ballad "Forever Love"!
--BABYFACE
I'm disappointed that none of Babyface's music from his "Tender Lover"
album was included here. Besides Teddy Riley, Babyface was the
essential producer and innovator in the New Jack swing movement in the
early 90's. Songs like "It's No Crime", "Whip Appeal", and "Soon As I
Get Home" is the reason why Babyface's "Tender Lover" is so essential
to New Jack Swing.
--JODECI
I'm also very disappointed that no tracks from this group were included
in the game. The 1991 album "Forever My Lady" by JODECI was one of THE
essential 90's R&B/New Jack albums and is 100x better than Boyz II
Men's "CooleyHighHarmoney" album (which was chosen for this game!).
I suggest giving "Forever My Lady" a listen. The music on this CD
showcases the New Jack soul of JODECI that many other groups have tried
to replicate but could NEVER duplicate. JODECI's music was so fresh
when it came out and 13 years later, is still the best out there. No
R&B group today can outmatch the soul that JODECI possessed. Shame on
Rockstar Games for ignoring this band!
--TONY! TONI! TONE!
This band had a lot of cool New Jack Swing hits in the late 80's and
early 90's. Tracks like "Feels Good", "It Never Rains In Southern
California" and "Not Gonna Cry For You" are unforgettable NJS classics
that you MUST listen to! No NJS collection is complete without their
first two albums!
--KEITH SWEAT
Labeled as the innovator of "New Jack Romance", his undeniable voice is
indistinguishable from all the other artists out there today. He
possessed a smooth sound that no other artist could replicate and IMO
is still the best out there.
Give his albums "Make It Last Forever", "I'll Give All My Loving To
You" and "Keep It Comin'" a listen and you'll understand the "Romance"
side of New Jack.
--R. KELLY & PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
Yes, before R. Kelly was known as the "Homie-Lover-Friend", he was in a
New Jack Swing group! Their debut album, released in 1992, entitled
"Born Into The 90's" was Kelly's first and only New Jack album that
spawned three hit singles: "She's Got That Vibe", "Honey Love", and
"Slow Dance". If you can find this album, pick it up! It's a rare one!
--JADE
Jade had three big hits in 1992: "Don't Walk Away", "One Woman" and "I
Wanna Love You" from their debut album "Jade To The Max". With these
three hit tracks, these ladies brought the New Jack sound into
mainstream pop and it ruled most of 1992. You could not escape their
sound and it was just infectious.
Give their hard-to-find album "Jade To The Max" a listen and I
guarantee you'll like what you hear.
--ZHANE
Zhane ruled the airwaves in 1993 (together with En Vogue) with four big
hits: "Hey Mr. DJ", "Groove Thang", "You're Sorry Now" and "Sending My
Love". Technically, this group isn't New Jack Swing but you can
definitely hear the NJS influence in their music. Their music can still
be heard on flashback stations and is still great to listen to.
Give their debut album "Pronounced Jah-Nay" a listen. This is a CD that
you'll end up buying and wearing out at a party.
--LISA STANSFIELD
Lisa Stansfield isn't a New Jack Swing artist but her music had soul.
Her debut album "Affection" had five mega-huge hits in 1990: "This Is
The Right Time", "Live Together", "You Can't Deny It", "What Did I Do
To You?" and her biggest hit "All Around The World". With a 70's soul
influence in her music, it's quite odd that her ultra cool style of
music wasn't included in the game.
Since Rockstar Games had the nerve to include non-NJS artists like Soul
II Soul and Aaron Hall, I might as well include an artist of my own who
had more soul in her voice than Britney, Christina, and Jessica
combined. Give Lisa's remastered debut album a listen and I guarantee
you will like it.

I am very saddened that the New Jack swing sound died down in the mid-
90's. All the R&B music today CANNOT compare to the sound of New
Jack. I just wish this type music were still being made today. In fact
I'm getting emotional just typing this so I'll stop here.
