Gladius is a brilliant but often overlooked tactical RPG for PS2, Gamecube, and
Xbox.
This guide contains a TROVE of information from the game, include combat
formulas, stat gain, and complete, accurate, and detailed lists of all
recruitable gladiators and equipment. It also includes a lot of suggested
optimizations based on this information.

USING THIS GUIDE
===============================================================================
ABOUT SWING METERS: Some people like using them and some people don't. The
game is much harder with meters off. For that reason, this guide is designed
for play with meters off. Almost all of the information still applies when
meters are on, but the finer points of strategy are going to be different.
Most of the information in this guide has been verified. However, mistakes and
omissions are always possible. Corrections, questions, or other comments are
ALWAYS welcome at the GameFAQs Gladius board. Activity tends to take place at
the PS2 board even though many of us prefer the lower load times of the
GameCube version.
Notably absent from this guide, but planned for an update, is a complete and
detailed list of all skills including exact damage values and effect chances.
It is currently undergoing intensive reformatting.

GENERAL TIPS & POWER RECIPES
===============================================================================
Although the combat formulas used in Gladius are fairly simple, this is a game
with a lot of tactical wrinkles. As the tutorial very correctly explains,
there are a lot of ways to get the jump on an enemy -- or vice versa:
* Height advantage: the higher gladiator has an effective 2x advantage
* Weight class advantage: large damage or to-hit adjustments
* Range: what attacks can each gladiator use from where they are?
* Equipment: higher DAM, DEF, and special abilities can make a huge difference
* Skill match-ups: having powerful skills, or skills that are very effective
against a given enemy, makes more difference than anything else
* Gladiator choice: some classes have much better skill sets than others
* General tactical elements like position, unit quantity, etc.
For this reason, each battle is unique and there is no one "correct" way to
approach Gladius. There are, however, some ways that are a lot easier than
others. What follows are some "power recipes" that can lead you to develop
some of the strongest and most versatile units in the game:
* Damage Reduction accessories: This ability reduces ALL incoming damage by
50%. Needless to say, this is among the most powerful of all effects.
Plus, every single gladiator class has a Damage Reduction accessory.
* Affinity Attack 4: This skill does a ton of damage to every enemy, regardless
of how far away they are. Very useful for most gladiator classes, its real
charm is its infinite range, which gives you a lot of flexibility.
* The Executioner's Sword: Usable by Centurions, Samnites, and Ogres.
These items have a 35% chance to kill an enemy outright every time they
hit. If they hit twice, the chance is applied twice. So, paired with
combo attacks or area of effect attacks, you are very likely to see death.
Three hits nets you a 73% chance of seeing at least one death; with five
hits you're up to 88%.
* Channelers: Teleport + Sleet + Ameliorate. Channelers can use Teleport to
get into range and avoid being attacked, Steal Affinity to easily charge
their powers, Sleet to quickly disable enemy gladiators, and Ameliorate
to keep their teammates healthy. The ultimate support unit. However, they
can also do more damage with spells (Talisman + Asaya) or with Affinity
Attack 4 (inherent double damage) than any other gladiator.
* Urlan: Break Defense + Affinity Attack 4. Urlan's version of Break Defense
is move-to-attack; it's probably the best physical attack in the game. It
can also charge ALL of his affinity with the proper setup. Turn 1 Break
Defense, turn 2 Affinity Attack 4. Very hard to beat. Note that this
setup requires JP you will probably only get for Urlan if you start as
Ursula.
* Gungnirs: Combo 2 + Affinity Attack 4. Gungnirs hit hard in the early game.
Combo attacks improve their range dramatically, hit often (especially with
the Gungnir spear), and charge their affinity. Two ranged combos followed
by Affinity Attack 4 is very strong. Combine with multiple Gungnirs and/or
Urlan for incredible destructive power.
* Amazons: Combo 2 + Affinity Attack 4. Amazons can use a similar strategy.
Unfortunately, you cannot use Amazons effectively until the second half of
the game, when it is harder to build up the JP for these skills. However,
one of their bows increases damage against men quite a bit, and Charm has
a 40% chance to convert a male gladiator to your side: that's even better
than killing them. N.B.: Eiji can't use ranged combos, but her Charm
ability is not restricted by gender!
* Undead Summoner and Summoner: Both of these units can charge their own
affinity, summon an infinite supply of Undead Legionnaires, and attack at
range. The infinite summons are the best factor since they can absorb a
LOT of damage from enemy gladiators. Possibly the strongest of all
abilities, the downside is that it takes a lot longer to end a battle this
way than with more aggressive units like Urlan.
* Channeler + Undead Summoner: In combination, these two units can kill enemies
without getting anywhere near them. The Undead Summoner should pass or use
Darkness from Life, and the Channeler should Steal Affinity, Affinity
Attack 4, or pass.
* Pair of Secutors or Bandits: Backstabber. Attacking one enemy with two
gladiators makes it easy to get back attacks going, which means triple
damage with the Backstabber skill. Secutors can also use Surprise Attack
(often enhanced by the Ring of Refuge) to try and secure more back attacks.
Additionally, both of these gladiators can obtain incredibly high DEF
scores in the second half of the game, making it extremely difficult for
enemies to hit them.
* Centurion: Motivate + Roam. Motivate lasts for three of the Centurion's
turns and increases the damage all nearby allies deal by 20%. It also
stacks, so you can use it multiple times. Especially potent in combination
with the Affinity Attack 4 units. Centurions also get one of the very best
move-to-attack abilities, Roam, paired with the Executioner's Sword.
Throw in Combo 2 to give them a great chance of killing anything that
doesn't run away.
* Samnite: Executioner's Sword + Befoul Area. With the Executioner's Sword
equipped, Befoul Area not only does damage, it also tries to kill each
nearby enemy with a 35% success rate. In tight quarters, this is amazing.
* Cyclops: Blindman's Eye + Glower + Punch. The Blindman's Eye allows the
Cyclops to easily hit any enemy, even Light units -- thus removing the
major liability of all other Heavy units. Punch is a terrific
move-to-attack ability that's very fast, and Glower allows the Cyclops to
cause Fear at range with an unusual 80% success rate. Very, very strong.
* Plains Cat: Swipe. Swipe costs just 2 SP and is guaranteed to stun the
victim (unless immune). A Plains Cat who gets in melee range can often
seal its target's doom with this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.1] COMBAT FORMULAS -- HIT CHANCE FORMULA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chance to hit (or miss) is determined by the following formula:
The result is then capped at a low of 5 and a high of 95.
What this means in plain English is that the further ACC and DEF are from each
other, the more difference each point of ACC will make. Here's a demonstration
of the formula in action:
As you can see, increasing ACC higher than your opponent's DEF isn't
particularly necessary, but if your ACC drops more than a few points below
their DEF, you start to run into problems. Conversely, increasing DEF isn't
very useful if your opponent already has more ACC than you have DEF. But if
your DEF already outstrips their ACC, further increasing your DEF can
drastically reduce their chances of hitting you.
In practice: DEF is most worth paying attention to for the characters who can
easily achieve a high DEF: Valens, Ursula, Secutors, Bandits, Murmillos, and
Centurions. On the other hand, it is the characters with low ACC, like beasts,
who will want to find ways of improving their ACC.
There are also a few situations in which attacks automatically hit or miss, and
the above formula is not used, as well as others in which ACC and DEF are
treated as higher or lower for the purposes of the attack:
SITUATIONAL FACTORS IN ACCURACY
-------------------------------
Hit automatically connects if:
- Critical hit
(not sure if the hit must be generated by a PC-controlled swing meter)
- Attacking an unaware gladiator from the back
- Defending gladiator is Knocked Down
- Defending gladiator is Petrified
- Defending gladiator is Frozen
- Defending gladiator is Stunned
- Defending gladiator is Afraid (? - this needs to be checked)
- Skill being used never misses
Hit automatically misses if:
- Skill targets a character that skill cannot be used on
+38 ACC when a Light unit attacks a Heavy unit
-20 ACC when a Heavy unit attacks a Light unit
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2.2] COMBAT FORMULAS -- DAMAGE FORMULA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gladius uses a relatively simple damage formula. Everything is multiplied
together, and there are no random factors outside of the swing meters:
DAMAGE = BASE POWER x ( ATTACK MULTIPLIER / 100 ) x SITUATIONAL FACTORS
For most attacks, BASE POWER is the number listed as "DAM" in the school info
box. "DAM" is simply the sum of a character's PWR and their equipped weapon's
strength.
For most magical attacks as well as weaponless attacks like punches and kicks,
BASE POWER is simply equal to a character's PWR.
The ATTACK MULTIPLIER is specific to the skill you are executing. I have
converted all attack multiplier values into percents for convenience.
For most classes, the basic move-to-attack skill has a multiplier of 40. This
explains why basic attacks against the training dummy will do exactly 40% of
your DMG in damage. Similarly, if a skill has a multiplier of 200, it will do
five times the damage of a regular move-to-attack. (The "ATTACK" number that
displays on the in-battle info box is the result of a character's basic
move-to-attack skill without any situational multipliers.)
There are a variety of SITUATIONAL FACTORS which come into play depending on
what type of hit you make, where you are in the arena, who you are attacking,
and any special status from items or skills that may be affecting you. What
follows is a list of all known factors that directly affect damage output.
There is no limit to how many situational factors may be in effect at once:
however, multiple copies of the same factor do NOT have any additional effect
(EXCEPT where noted as "stackable").

Each character has six main statistics. The manual's explanation is a bit
misleading. Here's what each stat *really* affects:
PWR: Added to your weapon strength, to determine the damage done by most
skills. Early game differences in PWR are minor; the stat only becomes
relevant if you attain high levels, and even then, high PWR is less useful
than having a great skill is.
ACC When a gladiator attacks, the defender's DEF is subtracted from his ACC;
& the result directly determines the hit rate of his attack. So attacking a
DEF: 10 DEF gladiator with 20 ACC is just like attacking a 110 DEF gladiator
with 120 ACC. Because of this, and because ACC and DEF rise at the same
constant rate for (almost) all classes, a +10 bonus to ACC or DEF is worth
just as much in the late game as it is in the early game. However,
because the DEF of shields rises more quickly (and to greater heights)
than the ACC of weapons, having high ACC (or skills that ignore DEF)
becomes increasingly critical.
INI: INI directly determines the length of time between each move you make.
There is a small amount of padding added to it, but in general, a
character with twice the INI will get to act almost twice as often.
However, INI rises at the same constant rate for all classes, so the
higher your levels get, the less relevant INI becomes: the advantage of a
30 INI gladiator over a 10 INI gladiator is much greater than that of a
130 INI gladiator over a 110 INI one.
CON: [CON x 6] = BASE MAX HP. 'Nuff said.
MOV: Base MOV is always identical to base INI (before equipment). As far as I
can tell, MOV only affects how quickly a gladiator moves along an extended
movement course when it's not his turn. Thus, it's not a particularly
important stat. It rises similarly for all classes, anyway.
When a gladiator who is in your school goes up a level, he gains points in each
stat. The amount he may gain is determined by his class. There is a small
amount of random chance involved; however, due to the way the stat increases
are rolled, they are very likely to result in close to average growth in the
long term.
Gladiators who are not in your school -- including potential recruits -- have
predetermined stats. (If he or she subsequently joins your school, from that
point only they will level up with random gains.) There are multiple stat
tables for each gladiator class, although most gladiator units use the first
stat table for their class. With one exception (noted below), all increases in
the stat tables follow the rules for random stat increases (for gladiators in
your school), and most of the stat tables result in fairly average stats.
* Exceptions:
Cyclops predetermined stats use 4-6 instead of 5-7 for PWR.
Bear predetermined stats use 5-7 instead of 5-8 for both PWR and CON.
In other words, these stat gains are HIGHER when in the school.
* Not quite an exception, but worth noting: there are a few gladiators that use
special skill tables with all minimum or maximum gains. All of the gladiators
who join via the Historian's League have minimum gains, except for one of the
Satyrs, Pan, who has maximum gains. Unfortunately, this includes the only two
recruitable Minotaurs. Imaus the Wolf and Bartorius the Secutor have maximum
gains.
As you can see, ACC, DEF, and INI/MOV are identical for just about everyone,
while PWR and CON vary mainly by weight class: the main distinction being
between Heavies and Beasts with high PWR/CON, and everyone else with lower
PWR/CON.
The stats that each gladiator begins with at level 1 are all predetermined.
These predetermined level 1 stats consist of a single set of level up gains
tacked on to base stats that vary by class:
3 5 5 5 1 Ursula, Valens
3 10 0 0 1 Minotaur
1 3 0 0 1 Yeti
3 0 0 0 1 ALL OTHER MEDIUM & HEAVY
2 0 0 0 1 ALL ARCANE, Female Gungnir
1 0 0 0 1 Bear, Scorpion, Scarab
Yes, it's true: the Mongrel actually IS the best at something! You'll notice
that the differences to PWR do not amount to much, and those to INI are
fleeting in significance. By far the most meaningful bonuses, then, are to ACC
and DEF.
The following table compares the final ACC and DEF that each gladiator class is
likely to end up with, taking into account innate skills and top equipment
options. The final numbers can be interpreted relative to an average character
of the same level, with no special bonuses or equipment, just the regular 4-6
ACC and DEF per level.
OTHER MECHANICS
===============================================================================
NORDAGH TRANSFORMATIONS
-----------------------
Urlan, Barbarians, and Gungnirs have the ability to transform into bears,
wolves, and plains cats. While transformed, the character (temporarily) has
all his equipment removed, and has a few modifications made to his base stats.
Each transformation has 2 or 3 forms available, depending on the class. Each
form you learn (1, 2, or 3) unlocks additional skills you can use while
transformed; if you have learned Bear Forms 1-3 and you transform into Bear
Form 1, you can still use skills you learned from Bear Form 3. Other than
unlocking skills, the only difference between the forms is the base stat
changes, which are slightly greater on the more advanced forms.
*Gungnirs use Bear 2's stats regardless of which Bear Form they activate.
*Urlan does not lose defense when in Bear Form 2 or 3.
Since a transformed gladiator will be notably weaker than an actual animal of
the same level, the main use for the transformation skills is healing. Each
time a gladiator transforms to OR from a beast form, he retains the same
percentage of maximum HP he previously had, plus an additional 20%. Also note
that the transformation may change the effective weight class of the unit;
transforming a Medium into a Light Wolf or Plains Cat may be useful when facing
a Heavy.
BERSERKER RAGE
--------------
Berserker Rage functions in much the same way as the above transformations.
While enraged, the Berserker gains a small set of stat bonuses. His weight
class shifts from Light to Heavy. He does keep his weapon equipped. However,
the major downside is that he becomes Berserk and the computer controls his
actions.
CROWD METER
-----------
The crowd meter runs from 0 to 100 points onscreen, and it can go even higher
than 100 -- although you receive no benefits beyond 100.
Certain actions make it rise:
+15.0 Using an affinity ability
+ 0.1 Causing damage, per % of Max HP taken away
+ 2.5 Each skill point used
The crowd meter also drains naturally on its own, depending on how high it is:
10 or more -5 per turn
30 or more -10 per turn
60 or more -15 per turn
100 or more -20 per turn
The benefits your team can receive from the crowd meter are:
25 points MOV +30%
50 points Affinity charge rate +1.5
75 points INI +20
100 points Critical hit damage x 2.0
The second status is presumably supposed to multiply your affinity charge rate
by 1.5, but due to an error, it adds 1.5 to it instead. As you can see, none
of these effects are very good, except maybe for the last one.
Sets = The Stat Set and Skill Set the gladiator uses.
Stat set determines
Skill set determines
GL = Gladiator's level.
Any positive number is a set level.
Zero means his level will equal your school level.
Negatives means his level will equal your school level, minus that number.
Perm = Cost to permanently recruit the gladiator, per level.
Temp = Cost to temporarily recruit the gladiator, per level.
Pop = Minimum popularity needed
ML = Minimum school level needed
Chance = Chance of appearing each time recruits are reshuffled.
The bullets to the right of this chance indicate:
* Something special must be done to make this gladiator available
- This gladiator has the minimized stat set (set 4)
+ This gladiator has the maximized stat set (set 5)

Classes = Which classes can equip the item. I've tried to keep this
as easy to read as possible, but a few items are usable by
too many classes, so the following abbreviations are used:
C = Class-specific item. Seems to have no effect, and
class-specificity is controlled elsewhere. I'm not sure
exactly what this effects, so I'm leaving it in the listing
for now.
U = Unbreakable shield
HELMETS:
All units receive fewer hit points from helmets than what is listed.
The percentage amount received is:
Heavy 92%
Medium 79%
Light 78%
Arcane 78%
Support 78%
Beast 5%
Beasts cannot actually equip any helmets -- guess it's just as well!
SHIELDS:
Shields provide more DEF than is listed here. The DEF varies in a way I
haven't pinned down quite yet, but the actual DEF provided is often about
1.5 times what is listed.
ITEMS NOT IN THE GAME:
Unfortunately, there are a handful of items listed that cannot actually
be accessed in the game. In some cases this only corresponds to certain
elemental versions of a weapon, but in other cases an entire awesome
item, like the Sniper's Bow, appears to be impossible to access.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to determine which items are in this
category, but it is a small one.

#1: What are the chances of the computer rolling a critical, normal, or weak
hit for basic and combo meters, when meters are off? What are the chances
of the computer "failing" and ending a combo early?
UNFORTUNATE BUGS
----------------
Most gladiators' Affinity Attack 4's add weapon damage for Air, Earth, and
Water, but not for Fire. The only meaningful exception is the Barbarian. This
puts a real damper on the use of Fire Affinity gladiators.
The Mongrel Shaman skill "Affinity Draw" is supposed to double their affinity
charge rate. However, the wrong effect was entered, and instead of multiplying
the rate by 2, it adds 2 to it. Thus the Petrified Bludgeon, instead of giving
them 100 affinity per hit, gives them 52 affinity per hit. This is too bad,
since alternating regular attacks with Affinity Attack 4's would have given
Mongrel Shamans a reason to exist, something they currently lack.
The same problem afflicts the second crowd reward -- it adds 1.5 to affinity
charge rates instead of multiplying by 1.5. This is also too bad, because it
would have made the crowd meter (and hence the Satyr class) more useful.
Channelers and Undead Summoners, on the other hand, are probably not supposed
to gain affinity from auxiliary hits when using a Combo Attack, based on an
invisible innate ability they have that attempts to set their offensive
affinity gain to zero. (It doesn't work.)
Continuing with the arcane affinity problems, it looks as though the Undead
Summoner's "Darkness from Life" ability was originally written as a side effect
of his drain-life-from-an-ally ability. This would make him a more balanced
class: still easy to charge affinity, but at a more significant cost than the
health of a gladiator who can stay so far from the fray. I think that'd be a
very fair cost to pay for unlimited summons, although I guess he'd be somewhat
inferior to the regular Summoner at that point.
Presumably, the Berserker innate "Adrenaline" was meant to add more than 20%
to their damage. The Dervish version of Adrenaline adds 50%. That would
certainly have made Berserkers better, but I think adding 100% was intended --
that would really be necessary to make up for all their horrible stats.
Eiji's Charm skill works on all units, regardless of gender.
It appears that Althaag was not supposed to sell all accessories at the
beginning of the game, but these restrictions were never programmed in. Not
having damage reduction accessories in particular available at the start would
make the other accessories see more use.
