I. What is Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball? (DOA history)
_____________________________________________________________________________
DOA took the video game masses by storm. Although the initial release of
Dead or Alive for the Saturn, and later for the Playstation, resulted in
mediocre sales, it began the fan following that would soon grow
exponentially. The game prominently featured girls with a certain
characteristic bounce unparalleled by anything on the market. Frankly, it
was incredibly unrealistic and only good for the occasion laugh. It also had
the feature of up to 14 costume for some of the girls and an average 5 for
each of the guys (gee, I wonder why? ^_^). The "Danger Zone," basically a
boundary around the arena where players would take damage if they fell out of
it, was the beginning of one of the trademarks of the DOA series... multi-
tiered levels and explosive walls. There was also the hidden character of
Ayane for the Playstation version.
The release of Dead or Alive 2 for the Dreamcast was a huge milestone in the
series. Dead or Alive 2 featured amazing graphics, outclassing anything
beforehand. The bone crunching sound, adrenaline pumping soundtrack, and
intense fighting system proved to be successful. It pushed DOA back on the
mainstream screen. It also introduced new characters: the French opera
singer Helena, the love distressed soldier Leon, and Kasumi's amnesia struck
brother Ein (Hayate). With the initial release of the PS2, Tecmo created
DOA2: Hardcore for the American market, including fantastic new costumes and
a new hidden character, Bayman from the original DOA.
Dead or Alive 3 inspired much outrage when it was stated that it would be
released exclusively for the XBox. Tecmo made clear that they wanted the
console with the best specs in order to produce the most graphically superior
game that they possibly could. Dead or Alive 3 outclasses Dead or Alive 2 in
terms of balance and graphics. It introduced some new characters: Hitomi,
Christie, Hayate, and Brad Wong. Ein was brought back as a hidden feature.
Dead or Alive: XBV is a tribute to the genuine fans of the series, according
to Tecmo. It is a game epitomizing fan service. Despite the fact that many
would make the assumption, due to the name, that the main focus of the game
is volleyball, it clearly is not. DOA: XBV is a game based on relationships.
Building collections, dressing up your favorite girl, teaming her up with a
partner, and creating a strong relationship are the main goals of the game.
Volleyball is simply a means to get there.
Picking up the game for its volleyball action would be pointless. The
volleyball itself is actual calm and slow paced, making this game ideal for
simply leisurely picking up the controller when you're bored, but not for an
intense sport. That doesn't mean that it isn't addictive, however, as you
try again and again to get swimsuit after swimsuit onto your favorite girl.

II. Who is Kasumi? (Misc. Info)
_____________________________________________________________________________
So, who is this cute bundle of Kunoichi joy? It is none other than Kasumi,
legendary ninja extraordinaire. She rules!
Her Bio Data from Dead or Alive reads as this:
Nationality: Japanese
DOB: Feb 23
Height/Weight: 5'5"/106LB
Measurements: 34-20-35
Lethal Fighting Style: Mugen Tenjin (Ninjitsu Assassin)
Favorite Food: Strawberry Mille-Feuilles
Hobby: Fortune Telling
Kasumi's brother, Hayate, was next in line to succeed as the 18th master of
the Mugen Tenjin Academy... until one fateful day when an assassin attacked
and crippled him. Her father Shinden was left bitter and refuses to mention
the details surrounding the attack. Kasumi wants revenge; and she's
determined to succeed as 18th master of the school.
Watch out for Kasumi- of you think she's quiet and kittenish, you're in for
an ugly surprise. Kasumi's expertise is Assassin-style Ninjitsu, and like a
cat, you never see her coming until its too late.
Dead or Alive 2 simply labels her as "the Kunoichi of Destiny".
Dead or Alive 3 says:
Kasumi is a kunoichi female (female ninja) who was ordained as leader of the
"Mugen Tenshin" style. Instead of accepting this position, she became a
"runaway shinobi" so that she might avenge her brother, Hayate, who was
partially paralyzed by DOATEC.
Day after day she is forced to defend herself from attempts on her life by
highly skilled assassins. Then, one day, Kasumi learns that Hayate is to be
at the DOA tournament. Though she finally meets her long-lost brother in
this last tournament, it is impossible for a runaway shinobi ever to return
home in peace.
Poor Kasumi! Basically, in DOA Kasumi is attempting to exact revenge for her
brother. DOA2 features her looking for her brother (abandoning her school
and becoming a wanted runaway shinobi in the process), finding him and
helping him regain his memory. DOA3 has her wishing to see her brother again
and battle the new threat that awaits them all -- Genra. Ayane, her half-
sister, hates Kasumi with all her might, possibly out of jealousy.
Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball has this to say about Kasumi:
A runaway ninja who got out of her village to avenge for her brother.
Nationality: Japanese
Height/Weight: 5'2", 106 LB
Body Size: B35" W 21" H33"
Birthday: February 23
Age: Not available
Blood Type: A
Hobbies: Fortune telling
Likes: Strawberry Millefeuilles
Favorite color: Milky Pink
Okay, so according to this, Kasumi somehow got shorter, her bust got larger,
and her hips got smaller. Interesting turn of events. *shrug* Whatever.
It doesn't matter. She's still cute as a button. Oh, and officially she's
17 years of age. They placed that statistic in the Japanese version of Dead
or Alive and removed it for the American version.
An analysis of Kasumi's strengths and weaknesses in DOA:XBV:
Kasumi is not particularly a powerhouse. In fact, she's a weakling. By
default, she only has 1 heart in power. Her small frame will successfully
get beaten into the ground by someone like Tina or Hitomi when they spike.
This is obviously a weakness, but her technique skills make up for it if you
are able to control Kasumi well enough.
Kasumi, being a ninja, is obviously very fast and precise. This shows in her
volleyball skills as well. Her technique in the game is through the roof,
being the max 5 hearts. This means that when you aim your shots in
volleyball when spiking (which you definitely should!) she'll be more
receptive to direction. Very significant since she's not incredibly strong.
Defense is average- 3 hearts. Defense is overrated. Offense is what you'll
need to win the games for the most part. Her defense will get the job done
and then some.
With proper instruction, Kasumi can be spiking win after win because of her
nimble abilities. She has a fairly good relationship with everyone in the
game except for Ayane, Christie, and Tina, but that can easily be resolved
later.
Besides, you've got to ask yourself... how could you not pick Kasumi? C'mon.
She's a little ninja hottie with a body and amazing flexibility :). Her
cute, shy appearance and innocent voice melts the hearts of fanboys
everywhere.
If anyone has noticed a voice change in the lovely Kasumi, it's because her
voice actress from DOA1 to DOA2 was Tange Sakura whereas Kasumi's voice cute
vocals were provided by Kuwashima Houko in the newer releases of DOA3 and
DOA:XBV. (Thanks to Donny Chan for this tidbit of Kasumi history)

Rabbit (Yep! A bunny suit! Awww!)
My personal favorites of hers selection are the Cattleya, the Bunny, and the
Camellia. To be completely honest, her selection has to be one of the most
conservative and modest in the game, but she does have some keepers. She'll
always look great no matter what, though. :)

IV. Kasumi's Favorite Items
_____________________________________________________________________________
In the world of DOA:XBV, there are two kinds of items that the character will
genuinely enjoy, and two that you should be generally giving them: Like and
Love.
Like items are ones that generic and bought in the accessory shops. These
include anything pink. This encompasses, but is not limited to:
Pink Visor
Pink Nail Polish
Teddy Bear (Pink)
Pink Cap
Pink Glasses
Love items are bought exclusively at Zack of All Trades. These items are as
follows:
Amethyst
Strawberry Millefeuille
Strawberry Juice
Crystal Ball
Tarot Cards
Balloons
Clover Brooch
Checked Cushion
Cute Cushion
All Origami
The giving of these particular items will always result in a large speed
boost in the notes appearing above Kasumi's head when she speaks (the
indicator of the relationship). Make her love you!
As a general rule of thumb, if attempting to give Kasumi a somewhat
naughty swimsuit, load her with love items rather than like items. If
you just need her as a partner, like items are acceptable. Easiest way
to go about this is to stock up on these items on the previous vacation.

V. Kasumi's Volleyball Strategies
_____________________________________________________________________________
First of all, there are some basic volleyball strategies that EVERYONE should
know before they play.
1. The A button should be strictly used for spiking, the B button should
always be used for passing. The only exception to this rule is when the
opponent is blocking when you're spiking. If this happens, LIGHTLY tap
the B button and push BACK on the directional pad. This will cause the ball
to fall straight through the opponent's block and to the ground. Typically,
the other partner will be too far away to save the point.
2. Always keep your partner behind your character, and your character closer
to the net, but not too close! You can accomplish this by using the right
thumbstick to move your partner anywhere you like.
3. Never aim your shots until the moment before you spike. The computer can
adjust themselves depending on where you aim, making it difficult to win
later games.
4. Spiking should be aimed always in the area that is away from the
opponents (duh), whether close or far, left or right.
5. The whole Zack tip in the manual bears a lot of truth. Basically,
wait a moment until the ball is right in front of the top of Kasumi's head
before pressing the button for a more effective shot. In reality, you need
to hit it at the last possible moment for it to be a "Naiisu Spiku!"
6. When the enemy spikes on you, always push the B button. ALWAYS pass it.
7. Never block. Blocking blows... seriously. It's dumb. Especially when
you're Kasumi. Kasumi will simply get knocked aside, letting the opposing
team get an easy win.
8. Kasumi should be spiking as much as possible and the partner a minimal
amount. This way, if the opponent blocks, you'll be in control of the spike
or feint. In the horrible case in which your partner is spiking and the
opponent is blocking, the best position you can have Kasumi is right next to
your partner as you continually press B over and over. In the very
possible event that the spike is blocked, Kasumi will be able to relay the
ball back into play with any luck.
9. When spiking or serving, it's imperative to get the timing right...
you'll need to practice it a little.
10. Whenever the computer is about to spike, never make any sudden movements
with your character. The ball will always home in towards you to an extent, but
if you dash while the spike is being performed, it is possible that the ball
will be sent to your previous location and not your current.
Your entire strategy should consist of you passing the ball so that your
partner volleys it up, and Kasumi rushes in for the spike. This is the
entire volleyball game. See? Didn't I say it was simple? :)
As long as you aim your shots, you should win with a very good record. In
fact, you should rarely lose, if ever. Kasumi should be closer to the net on
one side, your partner should be farther away by a little on the opposite
side (left or right).
So, who's a good partner for Kasumi?
In actuality, a powerhouse is probably the best choice for a partner. In the
event that your partner does spike a few, and it's inevitable, it's better to
have someone very strong who has the ability to knock down the other girls.
This makes Tina and Hitomi great choices. Anyone can really complement
Kasumi. The whole game is based on YOUR abilities and skills. But if you're
having a tough time, I'd suggest a powerhouse.
What to watch out for in particular when facing another team?
The biggest problem that Kasumi has is getting knocked over repeatedly
against the likes of Hitomi and Tina. A team of Tina AND Hitomi is pretty
bad news for Kasumi, but its still far from unbeatable. There is also the
matter of Ayane. She's a very skilled player. If she spikes from a distance
then there's practically no stopping the attack. She suffers, however, from
the same weakness as Kasumi -- she's easily knocked to the floor. This is
where your partner comes in handy.

VI. Kasumi's Swimsuit Acceptance Strategies
_____________________________________________________________________________
"The Venus is extremely comfortable! Really! It is! Honest! I'm just
looking out for your ability to relax on this beautiful island. You think
I'd lie?"
"Well, if you put it THAT way... sure!"
This will never... ever... happen.
Getting Kasumi to wear those little kinky suits can serious pain unless you
have a game plan, which fortunately I do. Unless you know what you're doing,
you could be blowing millions of ZackBucks down the drain.
First off, I'm assuming that anyone who needs help is needing help with the
more provocative suits, like the Venus or V-suits. Every girl hates these,
and by that same token, every guy loves them. Here are some ways to help
even the odds.
1. Stock up on love/like items for Kasumi with the suit giver. You'll need
to get on Kasumi's good side.
2. Try to build a relationship with the other character by playing a few
vacations with them earlier on.
3. Little known fact: The more you use a team in tag battle mode in DOA3,
the better their relationship will be in DOA: XBV. This is especially
helpful with the more difficult partnerships like Kasumi/Ayane and
Kasumi/Tina.
4. Clear out some of Kasumi's inventory before trying... it's important that
she has some room for gifts and suits. She will not accept a suit if her
inventory is full.
5. Don't give a suit until day 10 or later. A relationship will not have
the ability to reach a higher state until after Day 9. This will facilitate
the giving process.
6. Never give swimsuits, unless Kasumi is sure to like them, through the
hotel. Always give them in person if there is a question as to her opinions
on the suit.
7. If you find yourself running out of like/love items, which you shouldn't,
but if you do, you can substitute for a cheap and modest swimsuit. In the
case of Kasumi, give her a pink swimsuit that doesn't show that much skin.
She'll like it, and that'll help your relationship.
On the day of reckoning, make sure Kasumi sufficiently loves you. Also make
certain that Kasumi is partnered up with someone (this confirms that she will
be there 3 times that day). In the morning, give her a love item. Give her
the suit during the day. Give her another love item in the evening. If
she's not wearing the newly given suit in the evening when you give the love
item, you failed... but don't fret! All is not lost!
Complete the vacation. Start a new one. This time, pick Kasumi. Decline
the island tour. Give lots of like/love gifts to the previous "suit giver."
This can be difficult, depending on the pair, but partner up with her ASAP.
Upon doing this, win 2 games of volleyball during the day and poolhop in the
evening. Do this for at least 3 days. Continue to give her love items each
night. After the 3 days, continue to play volleyball and poolhop, but not to
a rigid schedule... just whenever you like and you may rest at the pool.
Continue to give gifts at night.
After a few nights, you may get a swimsuit package from the previous "suit
giver," and that suit may just be the suit that you've been looking for! If
it's not, continue with this process until the vacation is over. Even if you
do not receive a suit from the "suit giver" that vacation, make a new one and
try with Kasumi again, coaxing the suit from the "suit giver." I've had an
experience where on the SECOND vacation after my attempt I received my
desired suit, so keep trying.
This isn't bulletproof. But it increases your chances significantly. The
Tecmo Forums have very in depth processes by which to get suits on girls.
I've found this laid back method very effective and sufficient for me.
http//www.tecmoinc.com and click on community, general forums, and then Dead
or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. Many people say that these are surefire
bets, but I've had minimal failures using my method. Good luck!
Also, a nice method of expanding Kasumi's collection of suits is by having
everyone love her (not hard for her to do). If you have a pile of cash,
which you probably should after a few vacations, go to Zack of All Trades and
buy out the store. That night, give every girl a love gift. Some girls will
throw them out, but continue to do it every night. By the end of the
vacation, everyone will love her and they'll send her suits through the
hotel. You may get a really nice one, and each suit is one step closer to
completing the collection. ^_^
I haven't completed the collections as of this FAQ, but I've been able to
get the Venus on all of the girls and given Kasumi many V-Suits, thongs, and
string bikinis. It works. Keep at it. It's worth it. :)
Just as general advice, Helena and Ayane are not morning people... do not
give gifts, especially suits in the mornings... If trying to build a
relationship with Christie, do NOT give her more than one gift a day. It
pisses her off to get bugged.

VII. Kasumi's Gravure Movies
_____________________________________________________________________________
Ah... we get to watch as the lovely Kasumi enjoys her stay at Zack Island,
kindly modeling the suits we've selected for her.
These movies are played when resting in an area. Three separate cameras will
be on Kasumi, and you can switch through them using the left trigger button
and zoom with the right trigger button.
Here they are:
Niki Beach:
Morning- Stretching exercises
Day- Stretching exercises
Evening-Walking along the beach
Private Beach:
Morning-Playing on the swing
Day- Playing on the swing
Evening-Playing on the swing
Jungle:
Morning-Leaning against the tree
Day-Leaning against the tree
Evening-Leaning against the tree
Bass Island:
Morning- N/A
Day- Swimming in the waters
Evening- N/A
Various Gravure Movies are used when Kasumi is resting at the pool. To the
best of my knowledge, these are picked almost randomly. They are:
1. Sitting at the table, crossing legs
2. Hesitantly gets into pool, plays with tube
3. Stretching exercises

VIII. Kasumi's Facial Expressions
_____________________________________________________________________________
The key to the relationship is being able to tell what kind of mood Kasumi is
in.
Unwilling- facing straight forward; eyes off to her right, your left
Usual- facing her right, your left; eyes off to her right, your left
Confident- facing straight forward; eyes off to her left, your right
Basically, you want her eyes facing her left, your right.

IX. Kasumi's Quotes
_____________________________________________________________________________
How do you know if you're giving the right gift? Through Kasumi's quotes,
that's how! You can see if she likes it or not by reading the following:
Hate: "... Thanks. I guess."
Dislike: "Ummm... Thanks."
Okay: "Thanks. I really like it."
Like: "Wow! Thanks!"
Love: "Thank you! I'll treasure it!"
She won't even open the package in front of you if she feels very *blah*
about your relationship or she dislikes you.
Misc. Quotes
In the morning without a partner: "It's so bright outside" or "I slept so
well."
Arriving at the hotel: "Whew... I'm kinda beat." or "I'm back."
At night: "Goodnight, sleep tight." or "Hope I have a nice dream tonight..."
At night before leaving the island: "I wish I could stay on this island a
little longer..."
Leaving the island: "Oh. Time to go, huh."
_____________________________________________________________________________
X. Fun Stuff to Try
_____________________________________________________________________________
1. During pool hopping, have your character stand on one of the cusions and
leave her there. It's pretty funny watching her try and stay balanced.
2. Play a 2 player exhibition game and control one of the teams. Spike the
ball into the opposing team and watch as they fall over.
3. When about to enter a gravure movie at the pool, press the Back button.
The movie should show your partner's movie instead.

XI. Frequently Asked Questions/Rumors
_____________________________________________________________________________
Q: I heard that there's a nude code in EGM! How can I do it?!
A: You've been had. That article was clearly an April Fool's Joke.
Q: Is there any way to get them nude?!
A: No. Not really. There is the "visor trick" that some people try. That
is, to take a somewhat transparent swimsuit, or a swimsuit with transparent
attributes (e.g. Emu) and wear a visor with it (the colored visors with the
transparent colored section for a rim). During a gravure movie, or at the
poolside, you can manipulate the camera so that you are viewing through the
rim of the visor. If you look at the suit through the visor, it
disappears... something to do with the transparency attributes. Don't get
excited, though. The girls are protected by Tecmo. They have little colored
stars (their favorite colors, in fact; how appropriate!) covering their most
intimate regions. Better luck next time. Hahah.
Q: What's the deal with DOA Code: Cronos?
A: Not much, that's for a fact. This game is also supposed to be somewhat
fan service, but no one knows what it is. It's certainly not DOA4. It
remains a mystery.
Q: Are there any super ultimate crazy secrets?
A: Despite the hundreds of rumors on the net, I'm going to attempt to give
you some actual factual data on some of the rumors. Itagaki, the creator of
the series, has hinted that no one has successfully "completed" the game.
There are still supposedly secrets that no one knows about. He refers to a
"Godhand" mode. Perhaps some of these will be revealed in connection with
newer releases of DOA games, such a Code: Cronos, DOA: Online, and DOA4.
There is some speculation about writings on the walls of the private beach.
In seems to say "17 in 17." I'd have to say that it does in fact look like
it says this, but its probably nothing. If you are looking for it, it's
written on the large rock cliffs jutting out onto the water.
The secret "connection" between DOA: XBV and DOA3 is the tag team
relationships. Tag team relationships in DOA3 prosper in DOA:XBV. Also, if
you erase the data on the records or survival mode, it does indeed show Zack
winning. One other connection is that the more wins you have in survival
mode, the more starting money you have when starting a new vacation. This
is practically worthless since the increase in money is so miniscule. Don't
even worry about this. Play survival just to improve your survival score,
not to get a measly few ZackDollars.
Q: What swimsuits looks good on Kasumi in particular?
A: Any and all of them. A few in particular that look really nice are Tina's
Apollo or Hitomi's Whale. A lot of Ayane's outfits look cute on her. Lisa
and Christie have the raunchiest, most revealing outfits. Lei Fang's Emu is
pretty sweet and Helena's Salty Dog or Gimlet are very nice. Other good
choices include the Incarose and Reticulum.
Q: Why is Kasumi's age never shown?
A: I'm assuming that the Tecmo is making the assumption that the American
public would not take kindly to sexualizing a 17 year old girl. The games
obviously display her in provocative, sexy clothing (not complaining here :))
and use her beauty and bounce as a way to promote the series. Ayane, also
having an age unlisted, is actually 16.
Q: I want Kasumi to wear a specific swimsuit when I'm not controlling her
Is there a way to do this?
A: Yes. The easiest way to accomplish this feat is with preparation. While
playing AS Kasumi, place all of her swimsuits, except for the one you want
her to wear, in the collection. Now, fill up her inventory with indisposable
items, such as gifts. The computer is not allowed to throw away any items
except for items that were given at that time. The only way for the comp
Kasumi to wear new suits is to clear space in the inventory. She's unable
to this without putting a something in the collection. She can't put any
suits in the collection because she's wearing the only one. Puts her in
quite the predicament, eh? :)
Q: I heard that you can get lenticular cards with the game... why didn't I
get one?
A: These promotional lenticular "motion" cards were given in the game cases
of copies that were preordered.
Q: Why does Tina hate Kasumi?
A: It's not really clear, but Tina seems to dislike most of the girls unless
she's good friends with them, like Lisa. Kasumi is no exception.
Q: I read a cheat that at the slot machines, you can put a rubber band around
the controller and constantly make money. Is this true?
A: Most certainly is not. It was in an issue Game Informer and is completely
false.
Q: What happens when you complete your collection?
A: You get a letter from Zack saying "Congratulations" and something about
how he didn't believe you could do it. Then he comments that he'll see you
in DOA4. Yes. I know. Very lame. But who knows? It could unlock
something in one of the later games.
Q: What's the easiest way to make money?
A: Volleyball. Winning 7-0 will gain you 150,000 ZackBucks, plus bonuses for
"Nice Spike!"s. The winning drop dramatically when you win 7-1, down to
100,000. You can get extra money if you knock down an opponent with the
ball- 1000 per nail. :) Just remember, never sacrifice a perfect score for
getting a Nice Spike. The risk of losing 50,000 does not measure up to the
1000 you potentially could receive. Opportunity cost, people! Basic
economics!
If you're desperate, and you suck at volleyball no matter what you do, try
starting a new vacation, accepting the island tour and doing constant v-ball
matches for the next 2-3 days. That early in the game, you're almost
guaranteed perfect wins. Once you reach a harder day, simply leave the island
and restart a new vacation.
Q: You're swimsuit strategy didn't work... you suck.
A: That's not really a question, but okay... I suck. Suckitude is in the eyes
of the beholder. The strategy is not foolproof. If it doesn't work, try
again and you may certainly get different results.
Q: If I have questions, can I email you?
A: Yep, you most certainly can. And I'll try to find the answers for you.
