1. - Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my Ayane FAQ! This guide is for Tecmo/Team Ninja's
Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (hereafter referred to as "DOAX"),
for the Xbox video game console - but more specifiaclly for playing as,
or winning the affection of Ayane - the sexiest kunoichi ever!

Sometime last year, Tecmo and Team Ninja dropped a bombshell on gamers
everywhere.. well, *male* gamers anyway. :) That bombshell was Dead or
Alive Xtreme Beach volleyball... Imagine, all of your favorite gals from
the awesome Dead or Alive series, kicking back and enjoying some R&R on
the beach. With a solid volleyball engine, dating simulator elements,
and hundreds of swimsuits to buy for your lovely ladies, the game was
sure to win the hearts of DOA fanboys everywhere.. and that it did.

I wanted an Xbox for many, many reasons, but *this* was the game that
got my butt into gear. Being an obsessive Ayane fanboy since the DOA1
days, how could I resist? While I can admit that DOAX isn't a "gamer's
game", it IS very fun to just chill out with. Who said *every* game
requires in-depth fighting engines and killer reflexes? I applaud
Team Ninja for releasing a game like this. A game that doesn't take
itself too seriously, a game you can just relax and play, a game with..
hot chicks in bikinis!

Please keep in mind that this is my first ever FAQ, and I have a track
record of horrible, horrible typos.

With that said, let the FAQ commence! :)

2. - Biography: Why Ayane?

BECAUSE AYANE RULES!!! Okay, well.. maybe I'm a little biased.

In gameplay terms, Ayane is a pretty good character. She has decent
defensive abilities and her spike feels fairly strong when timed right.
She is also tied with Kasumi for having the best technique in the game.
Her only real downside is that none of the other girls seem to like her
all that much - I guess she's a loner. Don't worry, though, because the
other girls' friendships are easier to attain than you may think.. and,
hey - you've always got Lisa.. right?

Want another reason? She's the coolest girl ever!

2.b - Biography: DOA3 Profile

Ayane is a half-sister of Kasumi and Hayate. Ayane's former teacher and
foster parent, Genra, the leader of the Mugen Tenshin style in Hajin Mon,
has dissapeared. Ayane, now the most powerful Shinobi in Hajin Mon, learns
that Genra has been turned into a puppet by DOATEC and it's dastardly
Omega Project. Seeing what has become of her beloved father figure, Ayane
realizes that fate commands her to put Genra out of his misery.

She is Kasumi's half sister and a ninja assassin who is destined to live
in the shadow of Kasumi. Expert in "ninjutsu", her deadly fighting style
has given her the nickname "Female Tengu". She joins in the Dead or Alive
World Combat Championship as an assassin in pursuit of Kasumi. Ayane
secretly admires Hayate, Kasumi's brother.

2.d - Biography: DOA1 Profile

Ayane's first ever appearance was as a training dummy in DOA1 for the
Sega Saturn. She wasn't playable. You could only beat the poor
defenceless girl up. Poor Ayane. :(

While Ayane was playable in DOA1 for the Playstation, she had NO backstory.
She "officially" entered the Dead or Alive tournament with a purpose in
DOA2.

3. - Courtside

Ayane is a very good character. Not too strong in power or defense, but
has the technique to make up for it tenfold. This makes her reliable
backing you and deadly up front.

Keep in mind that this guide is for using AYANE. For *general* volleyball
strategies, I suggest checking out Sharpsight's exelent Volleyball FAQ
on GameFAQs.com.

3.a - Courtside: Using Ayane

Let's take another look at her stats, this time in more depth.

-Power: **

Ayane is NOT a powerhouse. Her spike pales into comparison to the likes
of Tina or Hitomi's. However, she *does* have enough power to make her
fairly useful for spiking, which isn't as true for characters such as
Kasumi or Lei Fang. It's all about the timing. With good timing, you
can turn each spike into a potental point. When your character leaps into
the air with her arm cocked back and ready to slap that ball over the net,
the trick is to wait... Wait... NOW! If you look very closely, your
character will reach the apex of her jump, then begin to fall. As soon
as this happens hit your A button! I cannot stress perfecting your
timing enough.. Once you do, you will notice a BIG difference in your
game. If you're having trouble, practice it in exhibition mode!

-Technique: *****

This is where Ayane shines. Technique affects aim, and more presicely how
far left/right, and closer/farther she can hit the ball when you tell her
to. Combined with her decent power she can be deadly. When you press A to
spike the ball, hold the analog stick in the direction you want the ball
to go! Press the analog stick up to aim left, down to aim right.. and
left to aim close, right to aim far. Confusing? Not really...

As shown above, there is a huge hole in your opponents' defense where
the "O" is - this is where you want to spike the ball! So from where
Ayane ("a") is, you would hold down UP and RIGHT as you spiked, to
aim the ball to the left and far! Mastering aiming will let you take
full advantage of Ayane's technique!

To sum it up: Aim for holes in your opponents' defense, and remember..
timing, timing, timing!

-Defense: **

As far as I know, defence only affects blocking. Want my opinion on
blocking? Don't. It's way too easy to screw up, and if you do you're
almost guaranteeing the opposing team a point. That's bad. Instead of
blocking, I suggest the following strategy:

As shown above, I reccomend keeping Ayane about three to four steps
back from the net, and in the middle of the court.

When your oppenent spikes, watch her closely and it should be easy to
tell where the ball is headed. By keeping Ayane in the middle of the
court, you have the best chance of intercepting the incoming ball no
matter which direction they hit it in. Simply position Ayane in the
general area you think the ball will be and hit B at the right time.
She will stop the ball dead in it's tracks and pass it to your teammate.
Press B again to have your teammate pass it back to you and can spike
the ball back to them! If you screw up or something goes wrong, you've
got your teammate right behind you, who can hopefully undo your mistake
and keep the ball from touching the ground.

cunsult them if you need more guidance on how to play.

In conclusion, good timing=strong spike. Strong spike+good aim=points.
Points=victory. Ayane owns. :)

4. - Socializing

DOAX has a very interesting friendship system. In a nutshell, you need
a partner to play volleyball.. and you can't get a partner without first
winning the friendship of the desired partner.

There are two ways to gain friendship. The first is to already have the
desired character partnered with you. With her as your partner, winning
consecutive volleyball games will make her adore you.. Just keep winning,
and she'll never split up with you.

The second, and more important way is gift giving. Out of the hundreds
of items out there, each girl has a handfull of items that she likes,
and another handful that she *loves* (to be explained later). Also take
note that girls you give gifts to frequently will return the favor by
buying gifts for *YOU*! This can range from useless trinkets to pricey
swimsuits that you can't get in your own shop!

In summary, giving the right gifts to the right girl will gain you massive
friendship and items in no time.

4.a - Socializing: As Ayane

While playing as Ayane, you'll quickly notice that pretty much all of the
girls have zero interest in you... But don't fret, as this can be changed
easily! As stated before, the best way to get a girl to like you is to
give her gifts! Use your common sense and check the game manual often..
Which would Hitomi like more: A recipe or a handgun?

In the worst case scenario, at least you still have Lisa (Assuming you
didn't turn her down in the opening dialoge!). She's a great teammate,
and I've beaten the whole game with her by my side, multiple times.
Just shower her with gifts and don't lose *too* much, she'll like you. :)

4.b - Socializing: As Other Girls

So you're playing as a different girl and want Ayane as a *teammate*?
This is easier said than done, since Ayane can be a real bi.. err.. you
know what I mean. :) Give her lots of "like" and "love" items until you
see two or three musical notes floating over her head when she speaks:
this is a sign that she's starting to really like you! When you see the
notes, ask her to be your partner.. and pray she agrees. :) A word of
warning, though.. If you're playing as Kasumi you're probably better
off going for a different partner. Ayane hates Kasumi with a passion.

Now that you know to give items.. what exactly should you give Ayane..?

4.c - Socializing: Gifts

There are three shops in DOAX: The Accessory Shop, The Sports Shop,
and Zack of All Trades [opens for buisiness on your 4th day at the island].

The Accessory Shop sells small accessories that show up on your character
when equipped or used, like sunglasses, hats, and nail polish. All
characters in the game have the same selection of accessories and the
shop restocks daily with new items. Some of these items are good gift
ideas - Again, just use common sense! Ayane likes purple things, so she
would like to have a purple rose.. don't you think? These are known as
the "like" gifts!

The Sports Shop sells swimsuits. Each girl in the game has a set number
of swimsuits that only she can buy that is rotated in the shop daily. While
swimsuits do make good gifts, I wouldn't recommend it for a few reasons.
First off, swimsuits are way more expensive than other items, and don't
guarantee a good reaction. Second, reactions to swimsuits can be a little..
unpredictable. Example, just *try* giving Ayane an overly cutesy or
especially perverted bikini.. You'll get a really bad reaction, and her
affection level with you could plummet. Really, the only reason to give
swimsuits as gifts is to hook up a girl with a bikini she can't buy in
her own shop - see section 5.b.

This part of the FAQ will be focusing mainly on items from the Zack of All
Trades. This shop sells little trinkets that make *awesome* gifts but are
otherwise useless. These are known as the "love" gifts! Please note that
this shop will not open until your fourth day on the island.. use that
down-time to make lots of money playing volleyball!

For some cash, you can also play the uber-easy Hopping Game at the poolside.
It's time to go shoppin'!

4.c1 - Socializing: Gifts: "Like" Items

Giving these items to Ayane will raise her affection for your character
just slightly - start with these items, and work your way up to the "Love"
items when she starts to show more interest in you. I reccomend giving
her these before you have access to Zack of All Trades on your 4th day.

As I stated before, *most* "like" gifts are just simple accessories from the
Accessory Shop.. all of which are purple themed. :) These include, but are
not limited to...

-purple rose
-purple anemone
-ribbon bracelet (purple)
-purple ribbon
-nail polish (purple)
-flower sandals (violet)
-purple sunglasses
-purple volleyball
-butterfly hair clip (any color)
-lavender [the flowers, from Zack of All Trades]
-compact [any color, from Zack of All Trades]
-handmirror [from Zack of All Trades]

I don't think this list is complete, but just use common sense. Ayane
likes butterflies, beauty treatments, and practically anything purple.

5.c2 - Socializing: Gifts: "Love" Items

Ah, here's the *good* stuff. Ayane will love you for giving her these
items! Keep in mind they randomly appear - ONLY in the Zack of All Trades
Shop!

-Marrons glaces [Ayane's favorite food! Beware, it's perishable - give it
to her as soon as you buy it!]
-grape juice [another perishable she loves]
-kunais [a ninja needs throwing knives, no? :)]
-shurikens [these too!]
-swallowtail broach [keeping with the butterfly theme..]
-peridot [her birthstone]

**special note** Do not Give Ayane any colored oragami if you value her
friendship - see section 6.

These are all of her "love" items that I know of, and they're more than
enough to make her like you. Good luck! :D

4.c3 - Socializing: Gifts: Reactions

In addition, here are all of the possible reactions you can get from
Ayane after giving her a gift. Pay close attention, because these are
valuable clues as to how much she likes that gift!

-BEST: "Oh my! Thank you."

-GOOD: "Hey hey. This is pretty good."

-OKAY: "Hmph. Thanks."

-BAD: "Huh? What's this thing?"

-WORST: "What is this? You've got bad taste."

4.d - Socializing: Moods

Did you know you can tell Ayane's (or any girl's!) mood just by looking at
her picture next to where she speaks? Here's what to look for!

-UNWILLING: Look out, 'cause she ain't happy.. Ayane is facing LEFT and
looking downward slightly, not smiling. Very similar to the CONFIDENT
picture, so be careful!

-USUAL: Ayane is feeling normal.. She is facing RIGHT with a neutral
expression on her face.

-CONFIDENT: Ayane is feelin' pretty good.. She is facing LEFT, looking
upwards slightly, and you can see the strap of her swimsuit. Be careful,
as this is very similar to the UNWILLING photo - look for the swimsuit
strap to be sure!

"Don't tell me you really bought this game for the volleyball..."

Ayane's swimsuits are some of the sexiest in the game, but maybe I'm just
a little biased. In this section you'll find all things swimwear related.

This is a complete list of all the swimsuits available (and exclusive to)
Ayane. They can all be purchased in The Sports Shop where they are randomly
rotated on a daily basis, with the exeption of Mermaid, Siren, and Racoon.

By the way, here's an interesting little observation: All of Ayane's
swimsuit names belong to mythical creatures of some sort...

*Apparently, Zack gives you these swimsuits on random (?)
nights in the game. However, he will ALWAYS give them to
Ayane in this order: Mermaid, Siren, then Racoon.

5.b - Swimsuits: Giving Swimsuits to Ayane

If you ever tire of Ayane's swimsuits, you're going to eventually want
ones from other girls' collections - Don't worry, it's natural. :)

Note that most swimsuits don't require this degree of planning. However,
the ones that you probably want to give her the most *DO*. The girls
are somewhat insulted when you ask them to wear something raunchy. Ayane
will also usually throw away overly-cutsey/girly things as well, so you
can use this method for those too.

This method was tested by BishujoManga and myself, using Venus. One can
assume this method would work with ANY swimsuit, as Venus is the raunchiest
one in the game - all the girls hate it. Be aware that you can follow
this method exactly and still not have any success due to the somewhat
unpredictable nature of the game.. But this is probably THE most reliable
method. Try and your own risk, and good luck.

First, play as Ayane. Before trying this, make SURE Ayane has tons and
tons of free inventory space. Put everything you can into the collection,
and discard unneeded duplicate items. If you give Ayane a swimsuit and
her inventory is full she WILL throw it away regardless if she liked
it or not. Full inventory=VERY BAD.

Now, your first objective is to of course play as the girl who has the
desired swimwuit. Buy and gift wrap the swimsuit for Ayane. Second,
stock up on "love" items, also gift wrapped (obviously). Don't worry
about buying duplicate gifts - for example, as far as I know, Ayane
will take two swallowtail broaches side by side and love them both just
as much, even though they're the same thing. Keep this in mind. After
you have the swimsuit you want and plenty of "love" gifts (5-7 should
be sufficient), select "leave tomorrow" at the hotel and start over from
day one with whomever just bought all the gifts for Ayane. Now, from day
one you want to shower Ayane with the gifts you bought for her - but keep
the swimsuit for now. Get her up to 2-3 notes.

IKillButerFlies Says:

"Ayane is not a morning girl. She will almost always have just one note
over her head in the morning. Even if you give her nothing, in the
afternoon she will be back to 2 notes. Take this into account when
giving her the more risque suits. More notes = better chances."

This is very true. Ayane even says "Oh, I hate mornings." When she
wakes up without a partner. :)

Ah, but there's one more little thing to take into account.. Make SURE
when you try this that Ayane is at LEAST in a Normal or (better yet)
Confident mood. The first time I tried this, she was Unwilling - I
wasted a million dollars. So MAKE SURE she's in a decent mood [see
section 4.d on mood descriptions].

Is she up to at least 2 notes? Good. Now find Ayane playing volleyball
in the morning - WITH A PARTNER in the same area. This means you'll be
able to find her all day. Is she in a good mood? If not, go to the hotel
and hope you have better luck tomorrow. :) If so, then you're good to
go.

DO NOT GIVE HER THE SWIMSUIT IN THE MORNING. She's not a morning person,
remember? Instead, give her a "love" gift in the morning! Then, in the
afternoon give her the swimsuit..

If you worship any kind of God, now's a good time to pray to him/her/it.

Then, in the evening give her yet another "love" item. If you see her
wearing the swimsuit you gave her, you've succeeded! Congratulations,
perv! :)

If you don't see her wearing it, and she sends it back to you the next
day or (worse yet) throws it away, then you've failed. :( put the
controller down. Go grab a beer. Sulk. Don't break anything. Try
again... if you have the patience.

...there is one other method, though. If you play as Ayane and give tons
of gifts to all the girls, they'll all give you random swimsuits and
other junk from their shops. This is good if you just want a grab-
bag of swimsuits you don't have on Ayane yet.

Or if you wanted the Venus, for example, you'd just shower Lisa with a
constant stream of like and love gifts. When you get a girl to 2-3 notes,
you can stop giving her presents and she should keep giving you stuff
every other day or so. The biggest problem with this method is that, of
course, it's /random/. It could be a loooong time before you ever see
a Venus this way.

Ryan says:

"Have you heard of the 'trash-diving' method of getting an expensive suit? I
didn't figure this out--other gamers at IGN's boards did. Anyway, let's say
you want to give Ayane a thong--we'll use Tina's Taygeta as our example.
First, as you said, you need a lot of like and love items. And, as you also
said, sometimes it doesn't matter how many items you give someone, they may
still throw the suit away. This is where the trash-diving method comes into
play.

As soon as Ayane throws away the Taygeta, leave the island as soon as
possible. Now, start a new vacation with Ayane and give Tina as many like
and, eventually, love items as possible. If you're lucky, Tina will gift
you with the Taygeta before your 14-day vacation is over. I've received
Lisa's 'Mach' suit, two Venus suits, Helena's 'Gimlet,' and Tina's 'Taygeta'
by using this method. It doesn't always work, though; so far, I've had
around an 80% success rate."

I have CONFIRMED this method works! I was trying to give Ayane a Mach (from
Lisa's collection), and no matter how high her affection for me was, she
would trash it. After two tries, I remembered this method and headed back
to Ayane's game, where I _didn't_ partner with Lisa. I gave her some cheapo
like gifts and on the first night she gave me the Mach! If you screw up and
your gal trashes a suit you wanted her to have, try it! Thanks Ryan!

-"Black-and-white" Ayane: Dryas swimsuit and zebra print volleyball.

-"Casual-wear" Ayane: Elf/Asparas outfit, any color sneakers, digital watch
and oval sunglasses.

A: If you follow the directions EXACTLY, it should work. There are no

Q: What's up with the origami?
A: Ayane has two reactions when she "views" the different colored origami
items. One is "This brings back painful memories.", and the other is "I'm
feeling a bit sad all of a sudden." I have no idea what this could mean.
This could be something about Hayate/Kasumi/Genra, something from her
childhood, or simply a story element Team Ninja hasn't touched upon yet...
**update**
Kasumi's reactions are "This brings back childhood memories" and "How do
you make a crane again?" ..perhaps it has something to do with Ayane
and Kasumi's childhoods together? It's obvious that Kasumi overshadowed
Ayane in many respects, and maybe the origami is a reminder of Ayane's
attention-deprived childhood. Only Team Ninja knows for sure.

Q: Will Ayane be in Ninja Gaiden?
A: Dunno, but I'm hoping she is. I think the odds are a little more in
favor of Kasumi and/or Hayate, though.. :\

Q: Have you heard anything about the Dead or Alive movie?
A: Very little. It will probably cheapen the entire series, though. >:\
