Welcome to my FAQ for Black Tiger.  Since the game is just a linear type of
game, there is a general walkthrough provided.  This walkthrough will be broken
up into the game itself and strategies for survival.  Input is appreciated
along with constructive criticism.  If you wish to e-mail me thoughts on this
FAQ, better ways of doing things, other strategies, etc., feel free.  Make sure

| 5.  OVERVIEW |===============================================================
+==============+

Black Tiger was created by a company that had just arrived into the video
arcade arena in 1984.  Capcom's first games weren't really memorable with the
exception of 1942 and Ghosts 'n Goblins.  By 1987, the video arcade market
started its slow recovery from the arcade crash four years earlier.  Capcom
came out with more memorable games such as Bionic Commando and 1943 The Battle
of Midway.  Although it wasn't a major force in the arcade world, Capcom still
could hold its own against other companies such as Atari, Konami, Namco, and
Sega who were also still putting out arcade machines.  Capcom, though, is best
remembered for putting out the Resident Evil games ten years down the road.
Good luck in defeating the three dragons and bringing light to the dark
kingdom.

| 6.  THE GAME |===============================================================
+==============+

Black Tiger is a two-dimensional, platform style game.  It seems that three
dragons descended from the heavens and wreaked havoc upon a kingdom.  The
result of this havoc is that the kingdom is now in darkness.  Of course, a
barbarian comes forth to right this wrong and take on the three dragons to
restore the light again.  The journey, though, won't be easy since you will
have to battle all manner of creatures to make it to the final showdown.  You
will go up narrow platforms and cross over wide, spike covered pits.  In
addition, you will have to make jumps that will seem impossible.  Also, you
will need money to buy the finer things of life.  Most every monster will yield
some Zenny, the standard monetary unit, as will some of the sages you come
across.  There is a little help along the way but you will still have to use
skill to make it to the end.  Being a hero is not all it's cracked up to be.

/ 6.1  The Controls /__________________________________________________________
--------------------

The controls on this game are pretty easy.  It may, though, take just a little
bit of time to get used to them.

-  An eight-way joystick

-  A swing or fire button

-  A jump button

/ 6.2  The Playing Fields /____________________________________________________
--------------------------

Black Tiger involves going through different areas as you quest for money and
glory.  The basic screen, though, remains the same.  It is just whatever area
that you are in that is different.  I have included an example of
what the playing screen looks like:

/ 6.3  Scoring /_______________________________________________________________
---------------

Scoring in this game is relatively hard since there are a lot of things you can
get points for.  Also, you get money for many of the monsters you kill.  This
money, though, will only remain around for a couple of seconds so you have to
be quick to pick it up.  Here is the scoring table (ZENNY is the amount of
money normally received.):

* Numbers underneath are point values for Black Dragon.

In addition to the above, you can get treasures or monsters from the vases and
treasure chests.  You will need keys to open the chests.

You also will receive a Zenny bonus after completing a round, the bonuses are:

Round 1:   300
Round 2:   500
Round 3:   800
Round 4:  1200
Round 5:  1600
Round 6:  2400
Round 7:  4800
Round 8:  NONE

You start the game with 2, 3, 5, or 7 men.  When you run out of men, the game
is over.  You can continue the game for additional money.

/ 6.4  Differences Between Black Tiger and Black Dragon /______________________
--------------------------------------------------------

Although they are similar in nature, there are also significant differences be-
tween Black Tiger and Black Dragon.  Below are some of the more apparent
differences between the games:

-  Difficulty is much higher on Black Dragon.  This is reflected in how
enemies react and how much punishment they can take.

-  There are more rockslide traps to cause your character's health to go down
  even faster.

-  Most of the bosses take a much longer time to defeat in Black Dragon plus
  they are more aggressive.

-  Points for the Red Dragon, Red Demon Warrior, and Black Dragon are much
higher for Black Dragon (see Chapter 6.3 for points).

-  There are additional enemies added to the enemies you will already en-
  counter in Black Tiger.

-  The secret item locations are the same but the symbols for them are
  different.

-  The Red Demon Warrior doesn't fall for the jump and hack trap.

-  Items are much more expensive (see Chapter 6.5).

_________________________________
/ 6.5  Equipment/Items and Shops /_____________________________________________
---------------------------------

You will come across sages, in your travels, who operate shops.  If you have
the money, there are quite a few items to make your journey easier.  The cost
of these weapons is dependent on what level the machine is set at.  The machine
levels are 1 through 8.  In addition, the cost is different between Black Tiger
and the clone Black Dragon.  Equipment in Black Dragon tends to be higher in
price.

There will be two prices listed.  The top price is for Black Tiger while the
bottom price is for Black Dragon.

+---------+
| WEAPONS |
+---------+

The first four items at the top.  A good weapon will make the difference be-
tween having to "hack" an enemy to death or taking them out with one blow.  The
cost of the weapon is in direct proportion to the amount of damage it can
cause.  The prices are:

If your body doesn't have any defense against attacks, all the vitality of the
world won't save you.  Armor is rated as to how many hits it can take before it
is destroyed.  You start the game with the basic two hit armor.

/ 6.6  The Bosses /____________________________________________________________
------------------

There are eight bosses to deal with in this game.  I will first list the
bosses, then their vitality, then a couple of tactics that you can use to de-
feat them.  Go to chapter 7 for the exact location of these bosses.  I have
consolidated the boss listings because you encounter the same types of bosses
throughout the rounds.  It's just their vitality that changes.  Watch the Boss
Vitality meter to see how much damage you are doing to them.  As you damage
them, they will lose a bar off the meter.

+-------------+
| STONE BLOCK |
+-------------+

Vitality:  2 or 4

After completion of Round 1, you will see two blocks stacked up.  After the
completion of Round 2, you will see four blocks stacked up.

-  The blocks will attack in a staggered formation.  In a sense, it will look
like they are walking toward your character.

-  When they are in the air, they will attempt to land on your character.  It's
best to either move back or jump forward.  Don't let yourself get caught in
  the corner.

-  As you hit them, cracks will appear in them.  This means that your hits are
connecting.  Again, don't stay in one place too long or they will jump onto
  your character.

-  Use the same type of tactics for both the two and four block bosses.  Just
move under them when they jump and take shots when you can.  This will be
especially important on the four block round.

-  Just keep moving around and hitting them and you shouldn't have any problems
of turning these blocks back to dust.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Vesther writes:

Stone Blocks (Boss of 1 and 2) appear as recurring characters in Stage 4 and
higher (Only the Blue-Eyed ones), but generally they appear as traps when you
try to open up an Urn, so open up an urn with the greatest of care, since an
Urn might contain Blue Blobs, Blue Mummies (????!), Minotaurs, and Blue-Eyed
Blocks. None of these creatures like to be bothered, so open up an urn with
great care.

+----------------------+
| DRAGONS (ALL COLORS) |
+----------------------+

Vitality:  3, 6, or 8

You get the Blue Dragon on Round 3, Red Dragon on Round 6, and the Black Dragon
on Round 8.

-  These are by far the roughest bosses you will have to deal with.  They fly
and breathe fire which makes maneuvering a bit tricky.  In addition, you
must hit them in the top part of their body.

-  When the battle sets up, the dragon will be on the right side of the screen,
wings folded up.  When you approach, the dragon will take off and fly up and
to the left.  If you can, jump and shoot at the moment of takeoff to get in
  a hit.

-  The dragon will flash when you successfully connect a shot.  The number of
hits to make the vitality meter go down will depend on the weapon you have.

-  When the dragon flies toward your character, it will use its breath weapon
to torch the floor in front of it.  Jump to the opposite side the dragon is
  flying toward.

-  You can't hit the dragon high in the air.  The dragon will come back down
and go under your character.  This is a great time to get in as many shots
as possible.  Again, watch out for the breath weapon.

-  If you get too close, the dragon will claw and bite at your character.
Again, keep your distance since this would be suicide going toe-to-toe with
  the dragon.

-  Continue to move/jump around the room and you will eventually send the
dragon back to where it belongs.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Vesther writes:

The Blue and Red Dangerous Dragons can be hit anywhere. Only the Black
Dangerous Dragon needs to be hit in his head or upper part of his body. The
Blue Dangerous Dragon only attacks you with fire-breathing. The Red and Black
Dangerous Dragons are more aggressive with their fire-breathing, with the Black
Dangerous Dragon being the most aggressive. The Red Dangerous Dragon also has
an attack that will send out four columns of red flames. The Black Dangerous
Dragon will have the ability to send out four columns of Blue Flames
(Potions?). Granted, the Black Dangerous Dragon writes Excedrin all over the
arcade. Although the Blue Dangerous Dragon is the weakest of the three
dangerous dragons, HE IS STILL a strong enemy.

+----------------------------+
| DEMOM WARRIOR (ALL COLORS) |
+----------------------------+

Vitality:  5 or 6

You get the Blue Demon Warrior on Round 5 and the Red one on Round 7.

-  When you approach the Demon Warrior, it will unfurl its wings and display
two nasty looking swords in each hand.  In addition, the Demon Warrior has
  limited flight/jump capabilities.

-  Since the Demon Warrior stays on the ground, you can jump and attack as long
as you keep your distance.  The Demon Warrior has two major attacks:

  -  It will hit its swords onto the ground creating a wave of fire or ice
which can knock some chunks out of your armor.

  -  It will jump close to your character and use its swords to deadly effect.

-  For both of these attacks, you can leap higher then the Demon Warrior so
when it gets too close, jump over it and attack from the other direction.
Also, use the raised platforms to further home your attacks in.

-  Continue to jump back and forth.  Watch out for residual fire or ice before
you jump to a spot.  When all is clear, go to it to pound on the Demon
  Warrior some more.

-  Keep up this pattern to send him packing.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Vesther writes:

The Blue Demon Warrior attack you with a projectile that will send out four
columns of Red Flames. The Red  Demon Warrior uses columns of Blue Flames. The
Red Demon Warrior is a real pest since all he does is attack you with a body
crash and Blue Flames. Be in extremely good health and have lots of potions
ready, the Red  Demon Warrior is a force to be reckoned with.

| DEVIL |
+-------+

Vitality:  3

You only encounter this boss on Round 4.

-  This little flying menace packs a major wallop.  Its main attack is flight
and throwing purple fire at your character.

-  You will either need a weapon that can shoot in the air or find platforms/
ledges to stand on to fire on this boss since it rarely comes down to ground
  level.

-  Use the jump button liberally on this round.  You will not only need to jump
out of the way of the flames the devil throws, but you will also need to
keep sharp for any attacks you can get in.

-  The Devil tends to swoop in and make an attack before you can react and
  counterattack.

-  This boss will require patience and a lot of maneuvering room so you don't
get yourself cornered.  Fortunately, it doesn't take that many hits (even
with a weak weapon) to bring this boss down.

Vesther writes:

The Devils utilize an Arrow Attack that is aimed directly at you, and the
stopped arrows generate Blue Flames. CAUTION! Blue Flames will invoke confusion
onto Black Tiger (meaning that all directions of the joystick will be
reversed), so avoid contact with Blue Flames at all costs!!! They appear
starting at Level 4, so have some potions in hand.

| 7.  PLAYING THE GAME |=======================================================
+======================+

You will start the game at Round 1 (unless you are continuing).  You will be
given 200 Zenny, two-hit armor, and a basic weapon.  In addition, each round is
timed so you will not only have to beat your enemies, you will also have to
beat the clock.  You will have 1:59 to complete each round.  If you fail, then
you lose a man and the clock resets again.  All dungeons exit at the same exact
point you entered them from.  There are also secrets buried in the walls.  Some
give money, others give weapon or armor bonuses.  I will denote where the
secrets are and what they have.  NOTE:  The maximum you can have is Weapon +5
and Armor +9.

Listed below are the rounds.

defeat and the round is pretty straightforward.

-  Follow the bottom path all the way to the right.  Note where the spines are

-  Backtrack to the spine you passed and hop on it to climb to the next level.
Go up to the next level and follow the path to a sage who will give you 100
Zenny.  SECRET:  Break the wall for 500 Zenny.

-  Get on the next spine and head up.  Jump off to the left to get to the sage
running a shop.  Go to the right and follow the path.

-  Jump down off the wall to fight the first boss.

-  On the next platform to the left, go to the end talk to the sage operating
a shop.  Head back to the spine and go to the next level.

  dungeon.

_______________________________________________________________________________

and follow the steps to the right.

/ 7.5  Round 5 /_______________________________________________________________
---------------

-  Again, another sage to the left, another shop.  Then head right.

-  This Round is a little tricky because you will have to jump on small plat-
forms.  The gaps in between are pits with spikes in them so time your jumps
  carefully.

-  At the top of this area is a sage with a shop.  Go up to the next platform
to right.  SECRET:  Break wall for 3,000 Zenny.

-  Go up   Continue going to the right along the columns and you will reach a

have to do is push the joystick right, diagonal up while pressing the jump

| 8.  CONCLUSION |=============================================================
+================+

When this game came on the scene, it seemed like everybody was making these
fantasy-type games.  When I first played it, I found it could quickly become
addictive because one wanted to make it through to the end.  After an endless
stream of quarters, I finally did make it to the end.  Of course, I was only
concerned with getting from point A to point B and not as concerned with
finding all the little things that were a part of the game.  Nonetheless, it
could keep one busy for quite a while until they understood how the game
operated.  Unfortunately, it is very rare to find this machine anywhere.  How-
ever, through the miracle of emulation, a whole new generation is realizing
what we "old" folks enjoyed those many years ago.  In addition,
www.shockwave.com is bringing many of these classic games back.  Check out
their site to see what ones are there.  I hope this guide helps you in being
able to get the most amount of gameplay for this game.  If you do have other
ideas or thoughts, please e-mail me and share them.  Who knows, maybe I'll
start a Q&A Chapter in this guide if enough people ask the same questions.
Anyway, thank you again for reading this guide.
