curry for the Playstation Vita.

[1] Intro
=========
Sorcery Saga is a very cute game. But it is a true roguelike, and plays a lot
like the original game "rogue". It may seem easy at first, but you will
encounter sudden difficult situations that you must prepare for and think
through.
Manage resources carefully, and be ready for disasters when they come. If you
see a risky situation, seriously consider avoiding it altogether. Sorcery Saga
has harsh penalties for dying; sometimes the right choice is just to run away.
Once you learn the game's tricks, though, you can zip through levels easily.
This guide contains info on the game mechanics and a walkthrough of the zones.
=========
[2] Setup
=========
WARNING: There is a very rare crash bug in this game. Some users report that
disabling your wifi (hold down the PlayStation button) will prevent the bug.
If you find the game laggy or slow, set the game speed to "Fastest" from the
options menu. The game runs much more smoothly at this setting!
Aside: If you haven't tried Japanese-style curry before, you owe it to
yourself to make some! Buy a block of Golden Curry at your local supermarket,
or order it online. Just put the curry block in a deep frying pan with some
water, add cooked protein and vegetables, and eat the result with rice or egg
noodles. It's AMAZING.
Now, on to the game mechanics!
============
[3] Leveling
============
Your level starts at 1 at the start of each dungeon.
Leveling up does not improve your stats, but your max HP will increase about
2-5 points for each level.
Your equipment levels up as you use it, gaining more seal slots. The max is 5
slots.
Equipment levels persist between dungeon runs. Overall, maximizing your
equipment is much more important than raising your level.
==============
[4] Attributes
==============
Attack: Determines your weapon damage
Magic: Determines your spell damage
Defense: Physical damage resistance
Intellect: Magic resistance, also raises chance to resist traps
The damage you do per hit increases with the square root of your stat. So four
times the Attack gives two times the damage. So against a typical monster, you
might expect:
Attack | Damage
-------+-------
10 | 8
40 | 16
160 | 32
Similarly, having 4 times your defense will reduce the damage you take by a
factor of 2.
So it's worth raising your stats where possible, but returns diminish. Adding
+1 attack to a +10 sword is worth much more than adding +1 attack to a +40
sword.
=======
[5] Kuu
=======
Kuu is your cute, hungry companion!
Kuu gradually loses health over time, and takes damage from enemies. Feed Kuu
items to fill it back up. Healing items like potions give Kuu lots of health.
Rotten or poison items will damage Kuu. Other items will recover moderate
health and may raise Kuu's stats. Cursed items can be fed to Kuu safely.
To feed Kuu, hold down the Square button and point yourself in Kuu's
direction. Then use the Item menu to throw an item at Kuu.
Kuu levels up with the first item he eats. Then he gains a level for every 2
items, up to level 5. It takes more and more items to level Kuu as he grows;
by the time Kuu is level 30, it takes 5 items per level.
Every three levels, Kuu will gain a new skill. Like a Pokemon, Kuu can only
learn 4 skills, and must overwrite an old skill of your choice once the slots
fill up.
Early in the game, Kuu learns a very useful skill called Crafting Smarts. Once
per floor this will allow you to combine items to raise their power.
But after you beat the Rock Hard Cavern, Kuu's learnable skills change and the
Crafting skill almost never shows up again. Thereafter, it is necessary to use
Giant Kuu in Dish Town for your crafting instead.
============
[6] Crafting
============
Crafting lets you combine items to add their +X modifiers together. For each
+1, the item's stats go up by 1. Most of your stats come from your equipment,
so crafting is extremely useful.
Crafting also adds seals to empty slots. Be choosy about what you put in seal
slots, because there is no way to remove a seal.
You can fill up your open seal slots by crafting with almost any item, even
scrolls and potions. Crafting with the item "Secret Scroll" is amazing - it
adds +8 to all attributes! And the rare Green Orb item adds +25 HP. Experiment
to find the best items.
Crafting with Giant Kuu costs money according to the highest level item
involved. To save money, combine low-level items together and then add the
result to your high-level item.
Running out of cash for crafting? There's a trick using the item "Decadent
Dirk". The Decadent Dirk sells to the in-dungeon merchant for 2500 gold. But,
you can buy it back from the merchant for only 150 gold. So you can max out
your money at 99999 gold by just buying and selling repeatedly.
=============
[7] Merchants
=============
About once every 10 dungeon levels, you will encounter a merchant. You can
pick up items the merchant is selling using the Circle button. Dropping an
item will sell it to the merchant. After doing either of these actions, talk
to the merchant to settle the transaction.
If you leave without finishing the transaction, the merchant will declare you
a thief and come after you. Merchants are strong and will kill you unless you
are way overpowered. For this reason, always speak to the merchant before
leaving the room to make sure everything is settled.
======================
[8] Unidentified Items
======================
Weapons and shields you pick up will often be unidentified. When you reach the
Curry Tower in late game, potions and scrolls will be unidentified as well.
If Kuu has the Eye of God skill, items will auto-identify when you pick them
up. Dropping an unidentified item and picking it up again can be used to
identify it in this case.
Items may also be identified using the Assay Scroll.
But the main way to identify weapons and shields is to equip them. This is
risky: upon equipping, there is a low chance that the item will turn out to be
cursed, and you cannot remove cursed items.
Getting stuck with a cursed item is a disaster! You'll be wearing the cursed
junk while your good gear is sitting unequipped in your inventory. Unequipped
items are very vulnerable to monster effects and traps. Also, if you die
(quite likely with cursed gear on), your uneqipped items will be wiped out
entirely. Giving up also obliterates your unequipped items.
For this reason, you should only equip unidentified items when you have a
method of curse removal (Holy Water / Blessed Scroll), or a means of leaving
the dungeon safely (nearby portal or Transport Book).
A good strategy is to carrying Holy Water into each dungeon. Then you can
identify items by equipping them, without the risk of getting cursed.
White Curry, made from the White Devil, is a good way to remove curses as well.
Once an item has been identified, all future pickups of the same item type
will be identified automatically for the rest of the dungeon. So if you
identify a Fork, and later find a Fork +1, the Fork +1 will be identified
automatically. This works even if you have discarded the original Fork.
All items are identified once you bring them back to Dish Town. Any curses
will be removed as well.
==========
[9] Spells
==========
Spells are extremely powerful. Offensive spells do great damage to single
enemies or to groups. There are spells that make you invincible or even able
to cheat death. Because of this, the use of spells is limited. You only get a
few charges, or in some cases just one. But the charges refill each time you
enter a dungeon.
Charges can be refilled through some items. For example, Tasty Water will
refill one charge to any skill. Occasionally, using a blue or red ward will
refill all your spell charges. The Moving Curry also restores charges - it's
made using a fish ingredient that drops from Axolotl type enemies.
To learn a spell, use the Tome item. Then you can equip it at the Study Desk
in My Room.
Early on, you get the tome for the Fire spell. A few other tomes are found in
chests along the way.
But, most tomes are found by using the Change Scroll or Magic Compact on
another item. There is a random chance to get a tome from this. It doesn't
seem to matter what item type you use the Change Scroll on, so just Change
whatever junk you don't need.
If you get another tome for a spell you already know, you can read the tome to
level up the spell. This only works for spells that have levels (stars next to
the name of the spell). Spells do not level up through usage like weapons and
shields do.
That's it for mechanics -- now on to the different zones in Sorcery Saga!
==============
[10] Dish Town
==============
Contains Smile Curry, My Room, the Library, and later the Magic Academy.
Note that you can access your items, status, and the Save Game screen using
the Triangle button.
====================================
[11] Oboro Forest / Rock Hard Cavern
====================================
The Rock Hard Cavern is the first real dungeon. The game's difficulty ramps up
after you complete it, so consider grinding a bit first (see bottom of this
section).
Floors: 3 Forest, 10 Cavern
Exits: Cavern levels 3, 6, and 9
Notable enemies:
Onion Laity - When it hits, may turn one of your unequipped items into Pickled
Onion.
Frail Elf - When it hits, may curse an unequipped item.
Axolotl Drone - Its attack can cause you to drop your weapon or shield. Note:
you can pick up and item you're standing on by using the circle button.
Maa-Maid - "Cleans" items by picking them up, which destroys them.
If you're carrying a valuable item, consider killing Frail Elf and Onion Laity
at a distance using Kuu, offensive scrolls, or spells.
Boss:
The boss is on Level 10. It has a fierce close-range physical attack. Warp
scrolls will not work. Use the Fire skill from a distance to win. Kuu will
engage and tank for you as you run away. The boss has around 70 HP, so 2-3
shots of Fire will do it.
After beating the Rock Hard Cavern, the game becomes more difficult:
- Red wards will now appear. These can do very dangerous things like
randomizing all your uneqipped items or dropping you to 1 HP.
- Giant Kuu will take up residence in My Room. Giant Kuu allows you to craft
items, but it costs 500~1000 gold each time.
- Kuu's skills change; you can no longer rely on Kuu to learn the crafting
skill. You'll be using Giant Kuu instead from now on.
- Curry recipes are available at Smile Curry. Go there while carrying
ingredients and you will learn new recipes.
Losing Kuu's crafting ability will slow down your item improvements. For this
reason, you may consider putting off beating Rock Hard Cavern until you have
some leveled-up items. Getting your weapon / armor to +10 or so is reasonable;
going past +25 is overkill. If you're going for the -99 achievement, it's
easiest to do before beating this zone.
==================
[12] Recovery Maze
==================
Floors: 5
Exits: 5th floor only
The Recovery Maze appears after you exit Oboro Forest once (possibly only by
dying). It is laid out like the tutorial level. The loot drops here are a
little better than in Rock Hard Cavern, so it's a great place to grind better
equipment.
==========================
[13] Cero Forest / Volcano
==========================
Floors: 3 Forest, 15 Volcano
Exits: Volcano level 8 and 14
Notable enemies:
Phoenichun - has a very long range fire attack that can hit you from
offscreen. Stay away from long hallways if your health is low, or this will
kill you unexpectedly!
Klepto Troll - Steals an unequipped item and runs away fast. Kill it to get
the item back.
Miniboss:
You will face Zeo on volcano level 7. Zeo has about 125 health. If your Magic
attribute is around 45, Zeo will die in three shots of Fire.
Boss:
Lavapotty Shrimp is the boss, and is on level 15. It has about 175 health. An
easy way to win is to use an invincibility scroll. Invincibility scrolls are
fairly abundant in the Volcano, and protect you for 10 turns -- more than
enough time to take this guy down.
After completing the Volcano, quests become available at the Magic Academy in
Dish Town. Several quests will be completed already, gaining you new outfits
for your closet in My Room.
===================================
[14] Whiskee Forest / Madadel Ruins
===================================
Floors: 3 Forest, 20 Ruins
Exits: Ruins level 19
Wow, 20 floors is a lot! Luckily each floor is pretty short. Beware white
chests, they seem to often be trapped here.
Notable enemies:
Cursed Doll - Can hypnotize which stuns you momentarily. Cursed Dolls can pass
through walls.
Magic Prajna - Has a long-range stun attack.
Boss: Possessed Puni
She has about 300 HP. Nothing too tricky; the usual scrolls / items / spells
will work fine.
==================================
[15] Glutton Woods / Grain-y Wilds
==================================
Floors: 3 Forest, 25 Wilds
Exits: Wilds 24
Notable enemies:
Chickurriel - can eat your unequipped items
Miniboss: Cliora, level 10. Around 300 HP.
Boss: Imhotep, level 25. Imhotep can seal your magic at close range, so you
may be forced to use physical attacks.
The optional grinding dungeon "Idol-atry Maze" opens up after completing.
=============================================
[16] Enigmatic Woods / Mysterious Curry Tower
=============================================
Floors: 3 Forest, 40 Tower
Exits: Tower 10, 20, 30, 39
The Curry Tower is a tough level! In addition to weapons and shields, potions
and scrolls are unidentified in the Curry Tower. Expect lots of trapped chests
and cursed items. Skip the red wards, they are asking for trouble. The Kuu
skill Safety First is great here for avoiding chest traps.
The tower levels are very spread out, with long hallways that deplete Kuu's
health. Keeping Kuu alive can be challenging; you may want to bring items in
with you to level up Kuu immediately upon entering.
My sword and shield were +35 here, and the dungeon was quite easy.
Miniboss: Gigadis, on level 29. ~250 HP.
Boss: Currysia, on level 40. ~350 HP.
And that's the end of the game!
The Sacred Sky Palace, a 256-level postgame dungeon, opens after finishing.
======================
[17] Sacred Sky Palace
======================
This dungeon is easy and pretty, but very very long. If you want to skip it,
see below for the dialog you would read at the top! Thanks go to GameFAQs user

Kuu: Kuu!
Pupuru: We made it to the top!
No one's hiding out of sight, right? Like, they're not going to jump out and
crush my joy or anything?
Great Curry God: (a fat, happy looking elephant carrying a sack): Nope, you're
the first one to arrive *Curry* (*Curry* appears to be his verbal tic)
Pupuru: Yay, me!
Who's number one? This girl!
Great Curry God: Good work *curry* Its obvious that you were the one make the
"Legendary Magic Curry" *Curry*
Puni: ... Oh, Pupuru...
. You might have beaten us here...
Etayana (looking pissed off): You're the Great Curry God?! What in the heck is
up with that stupid, nonsensical curse of yours?!
Why in the world would you do such a horrible thing to a beautiful,
curry-loving adventurer?!
Great Curry God: There is no curse *Curry*
Etanya: Come again?
Great Curry God: It is merely a side-effect caused by eating the magic curry
*Curry*
Think about it; if you suddenly obtain great magical powers, naturally you'll
become a tad numb *Curry*
But you were right about one thing *Curry* And that was about those who eat
the magic curry *Curry*
For them not being able to enjoy curry afterwards is truly a curse *Curry* I'm
not that mean *Curry*
So I made it a point to fix anyone came to see me *Curry*
I send an invitation to everyone who makes the magic curry *Curry* I recall
sending you one, in fact *Curry*
Pupuru: Well, Etanya?
Etanya(clutches staff): ...
(Wide eyed) No way that letter was...?
Pupuru: So you know what he's talking about?
Etanya Well, in the midst of my rage-fueled confusion, I received a weird
letter, I thought it was just junk mail....
(Angry) I remember thinking How DARE they send me this garbage right now..?!
So I ripped it up into a million tiny pieces
But that wasn't enough for me..
So I used my magic powers to remove it from existence... permanently
Pupuru: I'm almost positive that was your invitation...
Etanya *Sound of Sanity Snapping* (yes it says that)
So all my hard work, all of my suffering, was for naught? Ah....
Puni: Maybe you reaped what you sowed.. I think
Etanya(Sad): As I said.. back then, I was super depressed about being cursed,
totally and completely desperate.
Great Curry God:
You can relax now *Curry*
I'll rid you of your "curse" right now *curry
Etanya: REALLY?!
Pupuru: Oh, can you do the same for Kuu as well, just in case?
Great Curry God: Of course *Curry*
You guys, enjoy curry again *Curry*
Kuu: Kuu.
Etanya: What Kuu said.
Great Curry God: *Chants some spell*
Kuu: Kuu?
Etanya(smiling): So does this mean I can...
Great Curry God: Well, in your case, you've been suffering from the side
effects for a really long time *Curry*
Its going to take a little time for the effects to totally disappear *Curry*
Pupuru(Sad):: What do you mean by "A little time?"
Great Curry God: Ten years, more or less *Curry*
Etanya: Ten Years?
*Smiles* haha. that's all? That'll pass by in a figurative blink of an eye
Pupuru:: Um, Great Curry God? You might wan tot mention curing the
side-effects of the curry in your invite from now on.
Great Curry God: Oppsy! I guess I forgot *Curry* I'll be sure to put it in
next time *Curry*
Etanya *Narrow eyes*: You... forgot...
Puni: ...The Great Curry God might think he's funny... maybe
Great Curry God: I was looking forward to meeting someone who loved curry so
much they'd make the magic curry *Curry*
I guess I got so excited about the idea I forgot to include that one important
point *Curry*
Etanya: Please, for the love of spicy food, don't ever let another tragedy
like mine happen again.
Puni: (..I think it was her fault...)
Great Curry God: I want to hear about your adventures *Curry* We can the
"God-tier-Delicious Curry" while we talk *Curry*
Puni: ... But maybe we wern't the first to get here... possibly..
Pupuru:That doesn't matter anymore! If the Great Curry God says its ok, then
it's ok!
Puni: ..Yay.. I don't think I can wait...
Etanya: This kind of blows... I can only imagine how delicious that curry must
be, but I can't enjoy it just yet...
Etanya: Pupuru, Puni....
Be sure that you enjoy the heck out of that curry for me.
Kuu: Kuu?
Etanya: Oh that's right, if you're sitting next to me I should be ok, huh?
Pupuru: If it's going ot be that yummy I wish I could take some back home for
my mom and grandma to try...
Great Curry God: So, others in your family like curry as much as you *Curry*
Pupuru:: Yes! Everyone loves it!
Ah but I also really like the stew my mom makes to!
It's pretty darn tasty!
Great Curry God: Why doesn't she turn it into curry *Curry*
Pupuru: Eh?
Great Curry God (still smiling but sounding slightly agitated): Why doesn't
your mother use the sacred curry roux in her precious stew *Curry*
*Music changes*
How dare you praise the other foods after making the "Legendary Magic Curry"
*Curry*
Pupuru:: Eh?
Curry is curry! Stew is stew, right? They're both delicious!
Great Curry God: I cannot condone this heresy *Curry* You have betrayed all of
curry-kind *Curry*
Pupuru:: Narrow-mind, much?
Great Curry God: Now take back your heinous comments and apologize to all of
curry-dom *Curry*
Tell the world that curry is the superior food and that you'll only eat curry
from now on *Curry*
Pupuru: Of course I love curry, but gratin, pasta, hamburgers,
omelet-rice,stew and natto are all delicious too!
There are lots of other foods that are just as scrumptious as curry, you know!
Great Curry God: H-H-How dare you speak such blasphemy! I'll never forgive you
*Curry*
Now prepare to be punished *CUUUUUURRRRRRY*
Etanya: Hey, didn't a certain curry aura detecting someone natter on about the
Great Curry God being kindhearted?
Puni: ...This might be a unique situation... I hope....!
(Boss fight)
Puni: ...The Great Curry God might be a touch immature... allegedly...
Great Curry God: I feel kind of a jerk *Curry* I never thought I'd be so riled
up over other foods *Curry* I got a little carried away, as since no one had
made the magic curry in a while, I got more than a little lonely *Curry*
*Gigadis runs in*
Gigadis: There was this increadible sound of... something earlier.
Etanya: Pupuru defeated the Great Curry God. More like punished, actually.
Gigadis: Wh-what the-?!
Gigadis: Well punish me jealous!
Zeo: Gosh darn you to the deepest pits of heck, little girl! You WE'RE after
the ultimate magic power!
Oh please, wern't you listening?
The Great Curry God said himself that he only cares about curry.
Zeo:..What?
Pupuru: Yeah pretty silly, huh?? I was trying ot convince him that there's so
much yummy foods out there.
Cliora: Talk about immature.
And you call yourself a god.
GCD: Guys I said I was sorry... *Curry*
Pupuru, n order to make things up to you, I will grant you a single wish
*Curry*
Pupuru: Eh? Hmm... What should I wish for?
GCD: But please try to keep it reasonable, ok? *Curry*
Gigadis: Th-then I wish for me and pupuru to live happily ever after as
husband and-!
Kuuu: GUUUUU-! *Punts Gigadis far away*
Cliora: Ah! Lord Gigadis?!
Etanya: Oh..! This little hairball's dropkick sent the evil lord into orbit!
Puni:...I think he's only going to fufill Pupuru's wish.. maybe...
Pupuru: OI got it! Great Curry God, could you pass along to my father that I'm
doing fine? He's so far away now...
Great Curry God: And DONE! *Curry*
Etanya: Great Cury God, you can communicate with the deceased?
Pupuru: Huh? Deceased? My father is alive and well.
Etanya: What?! B-but you said
Pupuru What? I didn't tell you? When I was little, my father had to travel
aboard.
And I haven't seen him since. Since he's been travelling the world, I haven't
had much contact with him.
And once I left home to attend the Magic Academy, it became even harder to
keep in touch.
I probably won'\t get to see him for a while, so I want to his chance to send
him a message.
Etanya: Y-you made me believe... you trick me...!
Puni: ...Curry aura of extreme embarrassment and mortification detected...
Etanya: Hey! Stop reading my auras without asking first!
GCD: Hhahahaha! Its been a while since i've had this much fun! *Curry*
Now its time ot bring out the "God-Tier delicious Curry"
*noise*
Pupuru: So this is the "God tier Delicious curry?"
Cliora: The most delicious curry in the...!
Puni: ... It looks delicious... definitely
GCD: Come everyone dig in! *Curry*
*Gigadis reappears*
Cilora* Seeing as we just kind of barge in here.. is it really ok?
And I guess this means we can't have our wedding here, either..
GugadusL However the GCD did extend the offer, it'd be rude not to take him up
on it.
Cliorao *sparkly eyes* O-Ok! You're right!
I guess this means that we'll just have a magnificent wedding in your palace
instead!
Gigadis *distressed*: For now, why don't we just enjoy his hospitality...?!
Cilora: Got it!
Zeo: I've come all this way and the only thing I have to show for it is a
stupid plate of mediocre curry...
Pupuru: Oh? You plan on having some too?
Zeo *smiles*: I might as well get some sort of compensation for having to deal
with all this madness.
Kuu *happy*: Guu! Gugguuuu!
Puni: ... Maybe you choose to come on your own so you should stop whining...
;probably.
Pupuru: Oh yeah, GCD! He was bad-mouthing curry earlier!
Zeo: WHAAAAAA-?! You didn't have to tell him that!
*scene change*
Etanya *sigh*
(While it was easy to fix in the end, it was my mistake that caused me to
waste so much time doing so)
Puni: ... Why aren't you eating?
Pupuru: It's really delicious!
Kuu: Kuu!
Etanya: Ah, you're right!
...
... It IS delicious...
Pupuru:: Isn't it?
Etanya: (Then again just maybe...)
(Maybe I lived this long because I was destined to sit down and have curry
with these people)
(True or not that's my story and I'm sticking with it!)
