I.introduction
==============
Hello everybody and welcome to my Nobunaga's ambition Tendou
tutorial translation FAQ. Nobunaga's ambition is a series
of strategy games based on the sengoku jidai(warring states
era) in Japan. Tendou (heaven's way) is the 13th game in the
series released for the ps3 in september 2009. The game goal
is to choose one of the many available clans and conquer the
whole of Japan, thus unifying the country. It is quite
complex and has many mechanics and rules the player must get
familiarized with in order to play successfully. As the game
was published in Japanese only, I saw the need to translate
its extensive tutorial in order to give players without the
knowledge of the Japanese language a chance to play this
magnificent game. While I'm not a professional translator I
have been learning Japanese for the past 7 years and played
many Japanese only games. I did my best to stay as close as
possible to the source material while making the translation
sound natural in English. the tutorial translation is
conveyed mostly through long conversations between Hojou
Ujimasa (北条氏政) and Hojou Genan (北条幻庵).they are real
historical figures who used to be leaders in the Hojou clan.
Between conversations players are given the opportunity to
try themselves what was taught in the lesson. It is strongly
advised to follow the translation while playing the tutorial
and repeat each chapter until you remember its content.
Translation of important terms will be given next to the
original Japanese words when encountered for the first time
for your convenience. In addition, a dictionary of useful
and relevant words will be given in the appropriate places.
Once all the tutorial chapters are completed and understood
you will be ready to tackle the game main modes.
Now let's begin shall we? One last thing: Make sure you're
PC can display Japanese text correctly before reading this
FAQ because I used it for referencing purposes.

IV.Tutorial translation
=======================

As mentioned earlier the tutorial is composed mainly from
conversations going between two protagonists, Hojou Ujimasa
(北条氏政) who is the current leader of Hojou clan and the old
Hojou Genan(北条幻庵) who is also a family member in the clan
and one who has been serving the clan for decades.
Hojou Genan serves as the tutor for the inexperienced
Ujimasa and teaches him the ways of war. you will soon find
that their conversations can be quite amusing sometimes.
From this point onwards I'm going to shorten their names in
the tutorial: U=Ujimasa  G=Genan

Chapter 1:Unifying the country
------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.The conditions for winning the game
2.The conditions for losing the game
3.How to operate the camera
4.Start menu options

In the Sengoku jidai(warring states)period...

Once upon a time a great hero who was living in Odawara
castle located in the Sagami Izu region, gasped his last
breath. Hojou Ujiyasu (北条氏康) who was the grandchild of the
late Hojou clan founder Hojou Souun(北条早雲), rose to the
position of daimyo (feudal lord) rather quickly.
excelling in literary and military arts, he brought the
Hojou clan into prosperity. and now he died...
The one to inherit him and decide the fate of Hojou clan,
was his son and rightful heir,Ujimasa.

U: Father...may you rest in peace. you can trust me on
leading the clan. Well, I think I should take a rest too
  for a while...
G: Hold it right there! As the new head of Hojou clan you
have a mountain full of work to do!
U: How noisy...and who might you be?
G: What do you mean by who?! Piece your head together
already! I'm Genan, brother of Hojou Ujitsuna(北条氏綱),
your grandfather! I've been serving the clan for four
  generations now.
U: Ah! so you're my great uncle then! Ha,ha,ha, I was just
kidding, I knew who you were from the beginning.
G: (sigh) It's still a little unsettling though... alright
then. Although you are unworthy of your father, I'm
willing to teach you the knowledge you should possess as
  a daimyo.
U: Th..thank you great uncle.
G: you answered quickly but I see you're anxious. so, first
of all, what do you think is the great goal we should be
  aiming for?
U: I know! Make a huge profit!
G: (sigh) And to think you are the head of Hojou clan... I
  can't pity you enough.
U: N..not make a huge profit then?... ah, I know! Our goal
is to end this turbulence of war!
G: Exactly! Our goal is to bring all 66 prefectures of Japan
under the Hojou clan rule, alone, or together with
  our allies.
U: HA HA HA! I knew the answer to this question right away!
G: Well, inversely, what do you think will bring our
  downfall?
U: Well..ahem..I think.. that would be...
G: that would be the destruction of all our main and branch
castles. Beside this, a situation when our daimyo, who
happens to be you, dies and doesn't have a successor to
inherit the clan will bring our downfall, too.
U: I see.. the castles and the successor are both very
  important.
G: That's right. you must protect your successor at
  all cost!
U: I see... it will be too sad if my heir dies. I must
  prevent it!
G: That's a good way of thinking. Next, I'm going to teach
you some basic operations. First, you can use your left
stick to move the cursor around the map. If you move the
cursor to the edge of the map, you can scroll it in that
direction. Secondly, you can move your right stick up and
down to expand or shrink the map. In addition, by moving
the right stick left or right, you can rotate the map and
  adjust its orientation.
U: Got it! Don't tell me twice! By moving the left stick...
G: mmm, Well, just try it for yourself and you'll soon
  understand. anyway, let's summarize this:
L stick - Used to move the cursor and scroll the map in
  the desired direction
R stick L/R - Change your point of view
R stick U/D - expand or shrink the map
U: I...I think I got it!
G: Then try it yourself. When you think you practiced
enough, just press triangle to make time progress.
U: Press triangle when finished to progress. Press triangle
when finished to progress. Somehow, I find it easy to
forget and it makes me anxious.
G: If you need a remainder for the tasks you need to
perform, press start and then select [tasks 課題] in the
options menu. This way, you can check your tasks any time
  you want so relax.
G: I see... so I need to press start and then select
  [tasks].
Alright, just leave it to me.

Practice  time!

Now the control is shifted to you the player. From now on,
every time this happens I'll provide two kinds of
assistances. The first one is a translation of the tasks you
need to do in order to progress in the tutorial.
The second one is a vocabulary of important words and menu
items that are related to the specific tutorial chapter at
hand. If you see words that I didn't translate here don't
worry as they will be translated in other tutorial chapters
when they are needed.

Tasks:
Let's try to operate the camera:
1)Move the cursor to the edge of the screen by using the
left stick and scroll the screen.
2)Enlarge and shrink the map screen by moving the right
 stick up and down.
3)Rotate the camera by moving the right stick left
and right.
4)Press triangle to end the tutorial.

U: Yes! I can do it perfectly now! Peace of cake!
G: HA HA HA!... there are some more basic operations I want
to teach you, but there are several things you should be
  aware of, first.
U: Things I should be aware of?
G: Yes. In addition to operating the camera there are also
some shortcut buttons you should know.
U: Shortcut buttons you say? and what are they?
G: First of all, pressing L2 will bring up the
[information 情報] menu. You can see there various data
about castles, military forces as well as detailed
  information about officers.
U: Information menu you say? Never seen that before.
G: What on earth are you saying? Information is the most
important means in order to survive in these troubled
times! you should check it frequently!
U: Are there any more important functions?
G: Yes. If you press start you can [save セーブ] and
  [load ロード] your game.
u: [save] and [load] you say... I don't get the meaning of
these words but I feel they are rather important!
G: If you press start and then select
[environmental setting 環境設定] you can set message speed,
sound volume and other things to your liking.
U: I see. Well, I think I understand everything now.
The Hojou clan shall unify the country soon enough!
G: I haven't taught you anything yet. It's about time we
move to the main subject now!
U: Now you must be tired. It's about time we take our
  afternoon nap...
G: What afternoon nap?!...OK you are the head of Hojou clan
  after all.
U: that's right. oh! I just recalled I have an important
meeting to catch. see ya! (running away)
G: AHH! I haven't finished speaking...yet.
(sigh) I see we have a future full of difficulties...

Chapter 2: How to issue commands
--------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.Understanding the main screen
2.How to issue commands
3.Progress mode and Strategy mode
4.Environmental setting and more

G: Well, first of all Ujimasa, please take a look at this...
U: Oh! I see something just appeared at the top of the
  screen, greatuncle.
G: Exactly. Now, the one who calls himself the head of
Hojou clan surely knows what it supposed to mean, right?
U: Y..yes of course. perfectly. As the head of Hojou clan I
  suppose to know this...
G: .......
U: However, just for once and in order to make sure I
remember this, let's hear how to look at it.
G: OK then. The first indication you see at the top left of
the screen is the present year (1560年)and month (5月).
Behind the month indication you can see cherry blossoms.
This means it's spring now. You can also see there's
an indication of the current season near the current
  year (春).
U: Yeah. I noticed that.
G: Spring (春) is from March till May. Summer (夏) is from
June till August. Autumn (秋) is from September till
November and winter (冬) is from December till February.
This means that the  season changes every 3 months.
U: I see... and the numbers starting from the top right
indicate the amount of provisions we have (rice bags
icon), the amount of money we have (coins icon), the
amount of folding fans we have (folding fan icon) and the
amount of feather caps we have (purple feather cap icon).
  right?
G: Well, you were right about the money and provisions part,
but the feather cap number (322) represent our clan's
fame and reputation. you can also think of it as the
authority we have in the surrounding areas.
U: Our fame..is represented by a feather cap icon.
  I understand now.
G: In addition, the number near the folding fan indicates
our "contribution level". It represents the relationship
we have with the imperial court. I will give you a
detailed explanation about it later. Now, you can see
there's a blue bar beneath these said indications which
represents the date. When it's full it is the 30th of the
month. So, Ujimasa, let me ask you a question. If it's
the 30th when the bar is full, how many days are included
in one part of the whole bar and what is the date that is
  indicated now?
U: Um..well..ahem...
G: The bar is divided to 6 parts, so each part includes
5 days. When 4 parts of the whole bar are full, it means
  today is the 20th.
U: So today is the 20th. Just as I thought.
G: It's very important you make sure to remember this. Now,
about the three symbols near the blue bar... I'll explain
to you what they mean later. By the way, what you see at
the bottom of the screen is a description of events that
happened recently. Make sure to check them from time to
  time and respond accordingly.
U: Events that happened recently you say... But when they
are occurring one after another in rapid succession I
tend to be careless and overlook them.
G: In this case press and hold L1 and then press square.
By doing this you can look at the record of events which
happened thus far. It enables you to understand the
current situation quickly at all times.
U: Well, we reassured how to understand the main screen.
Next, please teach me how to give commands.
G: I will teach it to you now. You can give commands from
each castle we have. First, you have to choose the castle
you wish to give a command from and then issue it.
U: I'm not sure I'm following you.
G: Please look at this then. What you see here is a list of
the castles we have control of at the moment. Currently,
we have only one castle which is Odawara castle (小田原城).
generally speaking, there are 2 types of castles in which
we can pack many soldiers: Main castles and branch
  castles.
U: I'm still a little confused...
G: Then listen. When you want to choose a castle in order to
give a command, you can do so directly by moving the
cursor over the castle in the main map and pressing X.
You can also select it from the list of castles you see
at the right side of the screen. Just use the up/down
buttons of the directional pad and press R1. After
selecting the castle, pressing square will get you to the
command menu. If the cursor is in different area of the
map, pressing R1 will get it back to the castle quickly.
What you see here is called the "castle command menu".
Later, you will be able to give commands freely while you
  aim for the whole country!
U: That's an awful lot of commands...
G: I'll give you a detailed explanation about each one of
them later. There is no need for you to know all of them
  right now so relax.
U: So, let's aim for conquering the country by using the
[take a rest] command shall we?
G: Strange... I can't find such a command anywhere...
U: (sigh) It was only only a joke...
G: Well, basically we use [internal administration commands
内政] to manage our facilities and [military
administration  commands 軍事] in order to carry out wars
and expand our borders and territories.
U: I see. we can take the whole of Japan in 3 days, I think.
G: Three?! you don't think you can make progress by only
  giving orders now do you?
U: I can't?
G: alright, Ujimasa. you see, there are 2 modes of operation
in our world: "strategy" (戦略) and "progress" (進行).
U: "strategy" and "progress"?
G: "Strategy' mode is essentially a situation where the time
has stopped. You can give commands and think of your
actions without having to hurry up
only in this mode. inversely, "progress" mode is a
situation when time continues to flow. In short, the
commands you give in strategy mode are carried out by
your officers in "progress" mode. You are are advised to
look at the situation at hand and change your strategy
  accordingly when required.
U: Change my strategy?
G: Yes. please look at this.
U: I see. I gather that we are in "strategy" mode right now,
as noted at the top of the screen.
G: Exactly. If you press triangle now the mode will change
to "progress" and if you press triangle once more, it
  will turn back to "strategy'.
U: Which means that as long as I don't change the mode to
"progress", we can preserve the Hojou clan myth about
being invincible as we cannot be attacked while in
  "strategy" mode. HE,HE...
G: Which means that you only escape reality by thinking
  that way.
U: .........
G: By the way, giving a command or selecting a castle during
"progress" mode will automatically change it to
  "strategy" mode.
U: So, to summarize this, I give orders while in "strategy"
mode and make time flow in "progress" mode, right?
G: Just like that. Well, let's give it a try now and make
time flow until June. You can practice now and change
modes from "strategy" to "progress" and vice versa
  at will.
U: So I need to press triangle and shift between modes.
  Just leave it to me.
G: Additionally, you can also set the speed in which time
flow. Please look at the indications that appear in the
right from the blue bar. As you can see, there are 3
levels of speed in which time flows and you can adjust it
by pressing and holding L1 and then pressing triangle.
Just adjust it according to your preference.
U: I have been already aware of this. Let's change the mode
to "progress" now and make time flow till June!

Practice time!

Tasks:
* "strategy" and "progress" modes:
Let's make time flow till June.
1)Press triangle to change the mode to "progress".
2)Try and change modes and speeds a few times.
3)Stay in "progress" mode and let the time flow until
 6/1/1560.

Vocabulary:
戦略 - strategy mode
進行 - progress mode

U: It became really hot outside now. OH! it is summer!
Well, I think I understand these modes perfectly now.
G: This is just a basic knowledge so make sure to remember
  this from now on.
U: HA! HA! HA! just leave this to me. I have a gut feeling
that the land will fall into our hands really soon!
G: you aim high but I haven't taught you the castle commands
  at all yet.
U: ......!
G: I still remember how your father Ujiyasu led his army
against our despised enemies. It was a sight to behold!
U: Greatuncle! Supper is ready!
G: But I'm in the middle of telling the story...
U: Well, obviously we can't fight while our bellies are
empty can we? And besides, if we let it get cold it will
  taste awful!
G: OK, OK. We shall eat supper then. However, from now on
we'll get to the real business!

Chapter 3: How to earn income
-----------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.How to earn income
2.How to construct roads
3.Development commands
4,The usage of money and provisions

G: Well, Ujimasa, assuming we are going to aim for the whole
country, do you know what kind of problems are we going
  to face?
U: Money! In this world as long as you have money, you can
  do anything.
G: A good answer. If you don't have money, you cannot
support retainers and thus don't have anyone to order
  around.
U: Precisely! Can't support subordinates and can't give
  orders!
G: Yes. And do you know how can we earn money? Surely it's a
  trivial matter right?
U: Of course it is! If we just look around ourselves hard
enough, it will pile up magically before us.
G: What the...! The head of Hojou clan can't possibly tell
foolish jokes like that, I mean, seriously!
U: N..no no, of course not!
G: In order to earn money, first of all we have to control
what is called" merchant towns". What you see here is a
merchant town. There are other types of towns as well but
for now, just try to remember their names:

* Merchant town (商人町) - a town which is mainly used to
 earn money.
* Village (村落) - a village is mainly used to earn
 provisions.
* Samurai town (武家町)- mainly used to acquire military
 forces.

U: So anyway, in order to earn money we have to take over
this merchant town. Let's send there some soldiers
  already!
G: Just wait a second. In order to take control of the town
we have to pave a road first between our castle and the
  town.
U: A road? Do you mean that if we don't pave one we can't
have the town under our rule?
G: When we pave a road between our castle and the town,
the townspeople can come and go freely and safely and we
  can earn their trust.
U: I see...How thoughtless of me! Well, let's pave this road
quickly. It's just...how do we supposed to do that?
G: In order to pave a road we need to use a "construction
unit". by selecting [military administration 軍事] and
then [construction 工作] you can form one. Keep in mind
that you need one officer who will lead the unit. Now, in
order to get the job done quickly and efficiently, you
had better send an officer with a high leadership (統率)
stat. So start by selecting an officer with a high
leadership stat and form the construction unit.

  Practice time!

  Tasks:
  * Forming a construction squad:
Let's connect Odawara castle and the merchant town by
  paving a road between them.
  1)Select Odawara castle.
2)Select [military administration 軍事 ] and then
    [construction 工作]
3)Select the officer who will lead the unit
  4)Select [order confirm 命令選択]

  Vocabulary:
  Construction menu:
統率 - leadership           武勇 - bravery
知略 - intelligence         政治 - politics
部隊兵力 - number of soldiers in the unit
  最小 - minimum
  最大 - maximum
  半分 - half
  入力単位 - insertion units
1カ月に約x消費 - X provisions that will be consumed by the
               unit during a month
拠点兵力 - number of remaining soldiers in the castle
  命令選択 - order confirm

G: It looks like you managed to form a construction unit.
Now, when you formed it did you noticed that you can
change the number of soldiers in the unit?
U: Of course I noticed that.
G: HO! HO! You are sharp today aren't you! Actually, you can
form a unit even with 0 soldiers but if you increase it
you can shorten the construction process greatly. In the
other hand, if you do so, a part of your provisions will
be consumed. I'll tell you more about provisions later.
Anyway, depending on which one you prioritize,
construction time or provisions, you can decide the
number of soldiers in the unit in any way you see fit.
U: I see. If the number of soldiers in the unit is high,
the work will be done swiftly but they will also eat a
lot of food as well. Inversely, if their number is small,
the work will be done slowly but less provisions will be
consumed, too. When I think about it, this is the
  conclusion I'm getting to.
G: Well, please give now an order for the construction unit
  to pave the road.
U: J..just to be sure let me hear what I should be doing.
G: First, you should choose the officer who will lead the
unit as well as the number of soldiers in it. Next, you
have to give an order to the unit. this time, you want
them to pave a road so select [pave 敷設].
A part of the map will turn blue as a result. these blue
parts are the points you can begin your construction at.
Once you chose your starting point, the unit can begin
their work. In other words, the starting point for
the road can be next to a castle or adjacent to other
  roads only.
U: It means that a road cannot be constructed where other
roads don't exist, if I understand correctly.
G: That's right. You chose the starting point, then another
point when you want the road to change its direction.
You can do that as much as you like.
U: And what should it look like in the end?
G: How it's going to look like in the end is entirely up to
  you so think this carefully.
U: So... we want to pave a road between Odawara castle and
the merchant town but I still don't know how to connect
  the road to the town.
G: In order to control the town the road must reach the town
entrance. the entrance is the hollow place you see here.
U: Ah! there it is, But it's narrow and hard to select.
G: Well, even if you don't select the entrance itself, you
can connect the road automatically to the town by
selecting the town directly instead. Now, once you
decided the the starting and ending point of the road,
just select "confirm" (決定). Then, change the mode to
"progress" and the unit will begin paving the road.
U: mmm..This looks a little...difficult.
G: Not at all. Just try it yourself and you'll soon
understand. One try is worth a hundred explanations,
  so let's try this now.

  Practice time!

  Tasks:
Let's connect the merchant town with Odawara castle by
  paving a road.
  1)Select Odawara castle
  2)Select [military administration 軍事] then
    [construct 工作]
  3)Form a construction unit
4)Select the area in which the road is going to be
    paved on
5)Select "confirm" (決定) and change the mode to
    "progress"

  Vocabulary:
国内軍事施設 - military facilities built within prefecture
  商人町 - merchant town
  敷設 - pave
  建築 - construct a structure
築城 - build a branch castle
  補修 - repair building
  撤去 - remove construction
  移動 - move unit
  工作予定 - construction plan
  命令 - order
  金銭 - money
  兵糧 - provisions
  街道 - road
  兵力 - number of soldiers
  工作期間 - estimated completion time
  日 - day(s)

U: We finished constructing the road at last. What the...!
Greatuncle! Not only we didn't earn any revenue, we lost
money because of the construction work, too! It was all
  for nothing...
G: Of course it wasn't for nothing!! The fact that you rule
the town now doesn't imply that the townspeople will pay
  us taxes right away!
U: I guess they won't...
G: In order to gather money we need a "market" (市). We can
build one in one of the empty spaces surrounding the
  merchant town.
U: How troublesome. We have more work to do...
G: Troublesome?! Developing the country and improving life
conditions is troublesome?! You must be a fool to think
like that. Oh, I still remember the good old days.
  We were pioneers...
U: Well, we must build this market quickly then! Let's build
  it right now!
G: OK, I'll let it slide this time. Now, select [internal
administration 内政] and then [develop 開発]. This gives us
the option to build facilities within the town.
U: Alright, just help me a little with this. If I got it
right, I have to select a town in which I want to build
first, then I have to select the facility I want to build
and the officer who will be responsible for the job.
G: That's right. you can build up to 8 facilities at the
same time and deploy up to 3 officers to carry out each
job. You are advised to pick up officers
with a high "politics" stat. The higher it is, the
shorter it will take to build.
U: There is a saying: "one arrow can be easily broken, but
combine 3 of them and they will be very hard to break".
G: Exactly. I think I've already heard this saying somewhere
... anyway, let's try to build a market now.

  Practice time!

  Tasks:

Let's build a market in inside the merchant town
  1)Select Odawara castle
2)Select [internal administration 内政] then [develop 開発]
  3)select the merchant town (商人町)
4)Select the market facility (市) and an officer
5)Select "carry out" (実行) and change mode to "progress"

U: Yes! We did it! Soon, our warehouses will be filled to
  the ceiling with cash!
G: I don't think we will have this much by building only one
market though. Well, while we are on it, you should know
that the money us collected each time the season changes.
In other words, we collect it in the beginning of Mars,
June, September and December which means 4 times a year.
U: I understand, greatuncle. Now all we have to do is to
build one market after another and we'll have loads of
  cash soon.
G: Wait a minute! Haven't you forgotten something?
U: Forgotten...? Not at all. Money is the most important
  thing, right?
Or you mean that there is something more important than
  money?
G: Have you forgotten about "provisions"?
U: P..provisions, provisions...of course! I haven't
  forgotten about them.
There is nothing more important than provisions!
G: "Provisions" means the food that our soldiers eat.
It's thanks to this food they can work. Now, these
soldiers are not the only ones eating. The construction
team eats, too. It can also be said that if you send your
soldiers to fight when you have ran out of provisions and
when their bellies are empty, they will gradually lose
their morale and suffer a crushing defeat as a result.
U: That's terrible! If that is the case it is not money we
  should gather but provisions!
G: However, in order to get provisions we have to build
certain facilities in this village. The facilities we can
build in a village are as follows:

  * farm (畑) - used to earn provisions
  * fishing spot (漁戸) - used to earn provisions
  * rice field (水田) - used to earn a large sum of
provisions but only in the autumn
U: But...it looks like I can only build a farm in this
  village.
G: You can set a fishing spot only in villages located near
the sea. In addition, you can plant rice fields only in
  villages located near rivers.
U: Ah! I get it. The kind of facilities I can build in a
village depends on the place in which the village is
located at. Well, are we going to build this farm
  or what?
G: Just keep in mind that the point is to earn money and
provisions equally while building structures at the same
time. This is very important so try not to forget it.
U: Alright, greatuncle. In short, we should pave roads and
and build facilities as much as our resources allow us.
G: exactly! Just make sure to earn money and provisions in a
balanced way like I told you before.
U: You shouldn't worry at all, greatuncle. I shall develop
  our territories splendidly!
G: Yes. I'm looking forward to it.

Chapter 4: How to recruit soldiers
----------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.The [recruit 募兵] command
2.Loyalty and rebellion
3.Going to war 1: the fighting system
4.The army branches

U: We have gathered money and provisions! Meanwhile, I'm
going to defeat the neighbouring Ota clan.
G: Meanwhile? Please see the number that appears above
  Iwatsuki castle first.
U: What? Well, it shows 10000...
G: Good. Now please see the number that appears above our
  Qdawara castle. What is it?
U: It's shown 5000. I don't think it's possible that we are
inferior to Ota clan so this surly indicates the number
of rats residing in their castle...right?
G: This number indicates "number of soldiers". Our number of
soldiers is much smaller compared to Ota clan. Obviously,
we cannot fight against them in this condition!
u: What?! How come we are so much inferior to them? Can it
be a dangerous situation for us?
G: You managed to understand this, at long last. so, it
turns out that the military force management of the last
daimyo wasn't all that great after all...
U: And on top of that, if this situation keeps going on, we
might get attacked by the Ota clan any minute and it will
be the end of us! Let's hurry up and increase our
military force! I'll give an order to recruit as many
soldiers as possible throughout the country.
G: You can't increase your military force that easily, I'm
afraid. In order to do that we will have to build a dojo
  (exercise hall) and barracks first.
U: You mean additional structures? If that is the case, we
can build these dojo and barracks in the merchant town
  and village we developed earlier.
G: Don't cut me in the middle of my speech! We can build
barracks and dojos only in a so called "samurai town".
U: Well, it seems we found such town. I'll conquer it
immediately!... What the...! It's already under our
control... I don't recall having conquered it before
though. How can it be possible?
G: That's because I did it beforehand.
U: That's great, greatuncle! What a brilliant foresight!
G: Well, I guess it's nice to be flattered from time to
time... OK. Let's get to work. Please select these
  commands: [internal administration 内政],
then [develop 開発] and then build barracks (兵舎) in the
  samurai town(武家町)

  Practice time!

  Tasks:

Let's build it in a samurai town
  1)Select Odawara castle
2)Select [internal administration 内政] and then
    [develop 開発]
  3)Select the samurai town (武家町)
4)Select the barracks (兵舎) facility and an officer
5)Select "confirm" (決定) and change the mode to "progress

  Vocabulary:
  費用 - cost
  金銭 - money
  帰還予定 - estimated completion
  日後 - days later
  武家町 - samurai town
  兵舎 - barracks
  道場 - dojo

U: We built the barracks! And now, just like the money we
gathered, our number of soldiers will gradually increase
  over time, too.
G: I don't like to crush your party every time, but
recruiting soldiers is different than gathering money or
provisions. Just because you built some barracks doesn't
mean you can recruit soldiers any time you want.
First of all, do you how to recruit them?
U: Well...ahem... I need to...
G: Select [military administration 軍事] and then
  [recruit 募兵].
U: AH! [recruit] was it! Well, now we can keep recruiting
  soldiers throughout the year!
G: No we can't. We cannot recruit during the spring because
it's the rice planting season and we cannot do this in
the autumn either because it's the harvesting season.
that means we can recruit during the winter and summer
  seasons only.
U: Well, if that is the case, let's hurry up and arrange
  this quickly before autumn comes.
G: OK. You can try it yourself now. If by any chance you let
the time pass and it became spring or autumn, just change
the mode to "progress" and let the time pass until the
season changed again to winter or summer. then select
  [recruit].

  Practice time!

Let's increase our number of soldiers in Odawara castle
  1)Select Odawara castle
2)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
   [recruit 募兵]
  3)Select an officer
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to progress

  Vocabulary:
  費用 - cost of recruitment
  金銭 - current money reserves
  統率 - leadership
基本募兵数 - number of soldiers to be recruited
兵力 - current number of soldiers
  兵舎 - number of barracks
  道場 - number of dojos
  小田原城 - Odawara castle
  最低民忠 - townspeople loyalty

U: It is easy to recruit! Now let's keep doing this again
and again and gather a lot of soldiers!
G: Please take a look at the towns in our area. Have you
  noticed that something has changed?
U: Well...ahem...surly it's...
G: Loyalty is a stat that represents the loyalty of the
people in the territories we control, towards us. Now,
before the recruitment the loyalty had a value of 90,
  but now...
U: It decreased to 80! But what caused it anyway? I don't
  understand.
G: What do you mean you don't understand?! You take working
hands from them and turn them into soldiers. Of course
it's going to upset them and make them disloyal!
U: So recruitment makes loyalty decrease...
But even so, what could possibly happen if it's low?
G: What could happen?! And to think such foolish words come
out from the one who is supposed to lead our clan! Your
father would be turning in his grave if he could
  hear you!
U: A joke...I was just kidding. I swear! But just tell me,
what happens when the people's loyalty is low?
G: The angry citizens will grab weapons and organize a
rebellion. They will block all the entrances to towns in
  the area.
U: What?! But if they do this we won't be able to get our
  taxes any more!
G: Not only that, but they will smash and destroy all the
facilities and structures we worked so hard to build.
U: This is most definitely bad. But how can we make loyalty
  rise back?
G: There is no method to increase loyalty instantly. it will
only rise gradually over time. To be more precise, it
will only increase in the beginning of every month.
By how much? It depends on the value of the "fame"
  stat we have.
U: Fame? I think we talked something about it earlier...
G: I'll explain to you all about fame in another occasion.
In the meantime, just remember this:

The connection between recruiting soldiers and loyalty:

* Recruiting soldiers decreases loyalty.
* Loyalty is recovered a little in the beginning of every
 month.
* When loyalty drops below 80, a rebellion occurs.
* In order to quell a rebellion, a military force must be
sent. that is the only way.

U: So, in short, when we are recruiting too much, we have
to confront a rebellion. However, if we don't let loyalty
drop below 80 it should be fine.
What the...?! The loyalty value is 80 but a rebellion
just occurred nonetheless! What's happening greatuncle?
  Did you deceive me?
G: No. The reason it happened is because of incitement
actions caused by our enemies. We could prevent it if we
were using spies but we didn't... A little carelessness
  on my side.
U: So, if I'm correct, not hiring spies could stir the towns
people to rebel even when the loyalty stat value is 80.
OH! greatuncle! Why didn't you tell me this earlier?
G: Sorry about that but anyhow, suppressing this rebellion
is our top priority now. We have to send a squad to do it
  immediately!
U: Yes, I know I have to send troops but how can I do that?
G: Ah, you are asking about going to war now. OK, I'll
explain. In order to send a squad to war you have to
select [military administration 軍事] and then
[go to war 出陣]. You should know that 1 officer is needed
in order to lead 1 squad. The maximum number of soldiers
a squad can have depends on the officer's social status
as well as his leadership stat.
U: In other words, a daimyo like me, who has a high social
status as well as a leadership talent, can lead many
  soldiers, right?
G: Y..yes. that's about right...I guess. You should also
know that our military force is composed of a several
different "branches". I'll list them here alongside with
  their properties:

The army branches:
* infantry (足軽) - Can approach the enemy on foot and attack
                  directly.
* cavalry (騎馬) - Horses are needed in order to deploy them.
Can approach the enemy and attack
                                 directly. Can move quickly.
* archers (弓) - Can use bows and arrows to attack the enemy
                from a distance.
* riflemen (鉄砲) - rifles are needed in order to deploy
them. Have a high attacking power.
Can attack the enemy from a distance.

U: mmm...the cavalry and riflemen are surly strong, but we
have to maintain warhorses and rifles in order to deploy
  these units. This is troublesome...
G: Troublesome?! You don't know what are you talking about.
These units will increase the strength and quality of our
  army by magnitudes!
U: OK, OK. However, I have a question. When we are going to
war, which officer should I decide to lead which unit?
Can any officer lead any unit? Please tell me how should
  I make those decisions!
G: Well, generally speaking, you should choose an officer
who possess a high leadership stat as well as a high
  attack and defence stats.
U: Ah... leadership was it? My leadership stat is 47.
Is it high? It's high isn't it?
G: ........
G: While we are on the subject, there is another factor you
should consider when choosing an officer. Each officer
has a certain aptitude towards each of the army branches.
You are advised to put a general with a high aptitude
towards the branch he is going to be in charge of.
U: What? My leadership stat of 47 is high, isn't it?
G: You should also know that during a fight, if a unit's
number of soldiers drops to 0 or their morale (士気) drops
  to 0, they are destroyed.
U: My leadership...
G: A unit's morale drops if provisions have ran out, if they
are fighting the enemy, or if they are on hostile
  territory.
U: My...
G: In other words, soldiers cannot do their job at all when
their morale is low, so make sure to keep an eye on the
provisions amount and the morale stat at all times!
U: Well, I'm going to quell this rebellion now...
G: Yes, by all means please try to do it yourself. This time
the enemy is weak so you can finish them off using only
one unit. We should definitely win without any problem.
Please select [military administration 軍事] and then
[go to war 出陣]. After that, just form the unit and send
them to the target. Then, change the mode to "progress".
The unit will advance toward the target and attack it.
U: mmm...it's the same way we did when we assembled the
construction unit. But how can I give them an order to
attack? And do I need to give this order each time I want
  a unit to attack?
G: When a unit reach a place they can attack the enemy from,
they will do this automatically regardless if you gave an
order to attack or not. Oh, and you can lead the unit
even with a leadership stat of merely 47.
U: "Merely" 47...?
G: As the head of Hojou clan you must not pay attention to
small details such as this. Well, just go out to war
  already, Ujimasa!
U: Somehow I'm not satisfied with this explanation...
Well, enough of that. Rebels, I'm coming to get you!

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's crush the rebels
1)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
 [go to war 出陣].
2)Choose 1 officer for leading the squad.
3)Adjust the number of soldiers in the squad to the maximum
 amount possible.
4)Target the rebels squad.
5)Select "close" (閉じる) and change the mode to "progress".

Vocabulary:
編制 - unit assembly
武将 - officer
兵科 - branch
足軽 - infantry
騎馬 - cavalry
弓- archers
鉄砲 - riflemen
兵器 - siege weapons
兵力 - number of soldiers available at Odawara castle
軍馬 - number of warhorses available at Odawara castle
鉄砲 - number of rifles available at Odawara castle
破城鎚 - number of war hammers available at Odawara castle
攻城櫓 - number of mobile towers available at Odawara castle
大筒 - number of cannons available at Odawara castle
最高統率 - leadership stat of the best officer in the
        battalion
最高武勇 - bravery stat of the best officer in the battalion
最高知略 - intelligence of the best officer in the battalion
士気 - morale
1カ月に約x消費 - unit expenses for a month (x)
兵糧 - provisions available
命令設定 - command setting
自動 - auto mode
攻撃 - attack
護衛 - defend (attack the enemy that is closest to the
     defending target)
合流 - join forces with another battalion
入城 - enter a castle
進軍 - move
命令 - command
目標 - target

U: HA, HA, HA!! We won! And it was a very easy win!
G: Don't get overconfident. We'll face stronger foes in the
future. Carelessness is our strongest enemy. Never fail
to pay attention to the townspeople loyalty all the time
and send some spies to towns in order to prevent
incitements. 2 or 3 should be enough in my opinion.
U: Speaking of spies, greatuncle, it's because you didn't
tell me about them earlier that we got the townspeople
  incited.
G:.......
U: It's because of you we got into this mess.
G: Don't go hard on me. Maybe it's because of my age that I
  tend to forget things recently.
U: You dirty sneaky old...

Chapter 5: How to take over settlements
---------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.How to capture settlements (towns and villages)
2.Going to war 2: How to set up and use battle formations

U: I understand now how to earn revenue as well as how to
gather soldiers. It's about time we leave for battle,
  don't you think?
G: Yes, it's a suitable time indeed. Let's expand our
  territories then.
U: Let's crush the Ota clan first!
G: Wait a minute. It would be thoughtless to attack them
now. I have to teach you a few more important things
before you can do so. It's too early to attack,
  I'm afraid.
U: But I did exactly as you told me thus far.
G: First of all, we have to capture towns and villages that
are under our enemy's influence. If we are able to to so,
the income the enemy gets from them will become ours.
U: HA HA HA! I just had the same thought in my mind.
  that's a good point, greatuncle!
G: HO, HO, HO!! Let me ask you a question then. Do you know
how to capture a settlement from the enemy?</pre><pre id="faqspan-2">
U: mmm...We should...well.. we have to send some troops
  there.
G: Exactly! We have to sent a construction unit or a battle
unit to the town entrance and then it will be ours.
U: HA, HA, HA! Naturally, I knew the answer right away!
G: Even so, we can't capture the town by doing only that.
Let me ask you another question: What we have to do
before sending troops to the town,in order to capture it?
U: Well...ahem...
G: I'll give you a hint. When we took over a merchant town
previously, do you remember what we did in order to do
so? How did we earn the trust of the townspeople?
U: .....Roads! We connected our castle with the town by
paving a road! We have to do the same here and send there
a unit once the road is completed.
G: Right answer! This is precisely the way to capture towns
(to be honest, I didn't think he could answer the
  question correctly...)
U: mmm...So we have to pave a road and then send troops.
It's a little far from here thought...
G: In order to capture towns from the enemy, we have to send
our soldiers to hostile territories where the enemy
castle is often nearby, so you should watch out where you
  send your soldiers to.
U: So we can't capture the town over there...if we don't
snatch that town from the neighbouring prefecture...
Oh! don't mind me. I just needed to reassure something.
G: Well, Ujimasa, it's about time we capture a town from the
Ota clan. Please look here. What you see here is a
merchant town controlled by the Ota clan. It is located
east from Iwatsuki castle in which the Ota clan operates
from. You need to assemble a construction unit and order
it to pave a road between Odawara castle and the town.
U: This shouldn't cost us much. I'll put officer Tsunashige
(綱成) who has a high leadership stat, in charge of the
construction team and give an order to pave the road.
G: Just wait a minute! In this case don't use Tsunashige.
Choose an officer with a leadership stat as low as
  possible.
U: B..but why? You told me before that by choosing an
officer with a high leadership stat we can have the work
done faster. HA! You became senile greatuncle. You had
  better take a rest now...
G: I am not senile! You will soon understand the reason for
this. In the meantime, just do as I told you.

  Practice time!

  Tasks:

Let's capture the merchant town from the Ota clan
1)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
    [construct 工作]
2)Select an officer and decide the unit number of
    soldiers
3)Select [pave 敷設] and pave a road between Odawara
castle and the Ota merchant clan
4)Move the construction unit to the merchant town
    entrance

  Vocabulary:
  商人町 - merchant town
  太田家 - Ota clan

G: Wait, Ujimasa!
U: W..what is it greatuncle?
G: Now that the construction unit has finished their work,
you can give them a new command.
G: Of course you can. Just select the unit and select the
new command you want to give them. It took them much
effort to get this far, so you might use them to capture
the town as well. What you need to do is to select the
unit with the cursor and then give them the order
[move 移動]. Finally, select the town entrance as their
  destination.
U: What an unexpected coincidence. I was about to do
  just that.
G: ........

  Practice time!

  Vocabulary:
  命令 - order, command
  情報 - information

U: did you see that, greatuncle? I captured Ota's merchant
  town skillfully!
Only I can display such performance!
G: That's great but as the head of the Hojou clan you should
  be a little more modest...
U: B..but now that we captured the town from them, Ota will
surely send a squad quickly to reclaim their town back.
  That's terrible!
G: In such case you can order the construction unit to
[remove 撤去] the road that connects the town with
Iwatsuki castle thus, cutting it off from them.
You can use this tactic as you see fit depending on the
  situation.
U: I see. So we have the option to cut off the road, too!
(somehow, it almost feels like cheating to me)
G: ...What?! I think we have a little crisis going on.
U: A crisis?...Did something happen?
G: Please take a look here.
U: Ah! It's the enemy!
G: Ota clan must got angry and sent a squad towards us.
It looks like they want to reclaim their town back.
U: Maybe this is the reason you told me to put an officer
with a low leadership stat in charge of the construction
team. By doing so we enable the officers with the high
leadership to participate in the upcoming battle.
  Clever...
G: Well, as a man who has been serving the Hojou clan for
many years, this is the least I can perceive. I still
remember the time when I was in my 30's...
U: We have no time for that now! We must deal with the enemy
first! A bug has flown into the fire in a hot summer
day...no, it wasn't a bug. It was the Ota clan! I, the
great Ujimasa shall make them run away with their tail
  between their legs.
G: Wait a minute, Ujimasa. The enemy number is low but that
doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful.
U: What are you talking about, greatuncle?! It's merely the
Ota clan. I can squash them all by myself!
G: An illustrious clan like ours cannot be allowed to lose a
battle! We can never be too careful. When my father,
Souun raided the Izu area back then...
U: What should we be careful of then?
G: When we go to war, providing we deploy several units at
once, did you know we can set up a "battle formation"?
U: Of course I knew that! It's...well...
G: A battle formation can be set up if you deploy 3 or more
units at the same time for use on the battlefield.
U: Exactly, greatuncle! I was going to say just that.
G: Well, it seems that you already knew that... Anyway,
battle formations have various effects. I have already
summarize this so take a look.

* the crane wings formation (鶴) - increase the likelihood
                                  of a combined attack
* the fish scales formation (魚鱗) - increase the attack
                                   power of infantry
                                   and cavalry units
* the wild geese formation (雁行) - increase the attack power
                                  of archers and riflemen
                                                                  units
* the crescent moon formation (堰月) - increase the attack
                                     power of every unit
                                     slightly
* the spearhead formation (鋒矢) - increase the attack power
                                 against enemy castles and
                                                                 structures
* the square formation (方円) - increase defence
* the yoke formation (衡軛) - increase defence against battle
                            skills
* the drill formation (錐行) - increase movement speed
* the encirclement formation (包囲) - for surrounding the
                                    enemy castle

U: There are so many formations...
G: Basically, no matter which formation you choose you won't
get weaker or lose something. You can only benefit by
using it so select a one you like.
U: You tell me to choose a one I like but aren't there any
guiding lines in order to help me decide this?
G: I'll give you one piece of advice then. You should select
your formation while considering who are the officers
  participating in it.
U: Depending on the officers?
G: If we want to use an example from our clan,
let's take officer Tsunashige (綱成) who is our ace
  officer for an instance.
U: Officer Tsunashige?! But I thought I am our ace...
G: Officer Tsunashige has a high leadership, bravery and
above all, possess also a strong skill called "god of
war" (八幡之備). He is without a doubt our most valuable...
U: B..but greatuncle! I am...
G: So, if I want to put officer Tsunashige to good use I'll
  utilize this formation:

Battalion forming example 1:
formation - drill
unit 1 - Hojou Tsunashige (北条綱成) - cavalry
unit 2 - Hojou Ujishige (北条氏繁) - cavalry
unit 3 - Hojou Ujiteru (北条氏照) - cavalry

explanation: By utilizing the high aptitude for cavalry
which officer Tsunashige has, as well as the
high mobility of the cavalry units, we can cut
our way to the enemy position very quickly.
We also get the movement speed bonus by using
                        the drill formation.

Battalion forming example 2:
formation: crescent moon
unit 1 - Hojou Tsunashige (北条綱成) - cavalry
unit 2 - Touyama Tsunakage (遠山綱景) - infantry
unit 3 - Hojou Ujikuni (北条氏邦) - infantry
unit 4 - Hojou Ujimori (北条氏規) - archers
unit 5 - Daidouji Masashige (大道寺政繁) - archers

explanation: The archers defend the infantry units while
they are getting close to the enemy. Then, they
can use the "god of war" skill and attack the
enemy afterwards. Because we use several types
of units in this battalion, it will be best to
use the crescent moon formation which gives an
attack bonus to all units regardless of
            their type.

U: For some reason, I'm not included in any of those
  formations...
G: Well, these plans are only examples. You can search for
the best combinations yourself and come up with different
plans. Do you have any more questions?
U: Nothing special...
G: Battle formations have many merits and we will learn them
gradually. First, let's set up a battle formation and go
to war! We must defeat the enemies before they reach the
merchant town and take it back from us. If we choose a
good battle formation for our units, we shouldn't have
any problem defeating them so just apply what I taught
  you to practical use.
U: I shall decide the battle formation! Leave everything to
  the great Ujimasa!

  Practice time!

  Tasks:
  * assembling a battle formation and going to war
Let's form a battalion and defeat the Ota forces
1)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
    [go to war 出陣].
2)Select at least 3 officers for your battle formation.
3)Choose a battle formation and select "confirm" (green
    tab).
4)Select the Ota unit (太田氏資隊) as your target and press
    "confirm".
  5)Change the mode to "progress".

U: HA HA HA! We won! Thinking they could lay their blades
upon the great Hojou clan is just absurd!
G: The enemies were weak this time. Had they been stronger,
we could have a hard time dealing with them. So, to
conclude today's lesson, you should learn to use not only
officers and army branches, but also battle formations
effectively in order to come out victorious in the
battlefield. You should also learn to change those
formations according to the evolving situation, too.
U: It turned out that I'm this era's soldier of fortune,
  or maybe a prodigy?
G: Yeah, whatever...

Chapter 6: How to activate battle skills
----------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.What are battle skills?
2.How to activate battle skills?
3.Battle skill types
4.How to combine battle skills?

U: Greatuncle! Ota clan are here to attack us! God heavens,
we have to escape this peril of destruction!
G: "escape" you say?! As the head of the Hojou clan you
couldn't be more pathetic than that even if you tried.
Alright, relax. First of all, let's check the military
  capabilities of the enemy.
U: It's a large battalion isn't it? this isn't the time to
  relax! It's the time to...run!
G: Well, it's a pretty large battalion for sure but...taking
into account the quality of the officers we have, they
cannot even be considered worthwhile foes.
U: MUWA HA HA! I knew they are weak the moment I saw them!
They are not in a position to threaten us! Their lowest
of low social standing shouldn't allow them to attack us!
...Anyway, we should make them know their true place!
But what are we going to do exactly?
G: Did you forget the story about the battle of kawagoejou,
Ujimasa? Your father Ujiyasu has faced overwhelming odds
that night, but he succeeded to turn the tables on his
enemies and stoke them fiercely. He truly raised the
reputation of the Hojou clan after that battle.
Now let me tell you more about the battle of Kawagoejou..
U: No no no! We don't have time for that now! Let's not be
careless here, OK? We have enemies to strike first!
G: OK I get it. So, before we go into battle, there is
something we should check out beforehand. Do you know
  about "battle skills" Ujimasa?
U: Battle skills? Of course I know about them. They are...
  you use them for...ahem...I forgot.
G: A battle skill is what can be called "a killer
technique". Each and every officer has one in his
disposal and he can use it in battle.
U: AH! So that what it was. You know, my battle skill is the
strongest. It's called "rapid thunder spear of the lion.
  ceaseless fangs" (獅子天雷閃迅槍・絶牙).
G: You wish it was. Actually, your battle skill is called
  "spear 2" (槍衾之二).
U: Are you sure? Well, I haven't used it yet actually so I
can't speak from my own experience, after all.
G: Let's go on shall we? A battle skill power is decided by
the bravery stat an officer has. Even if an officer has a
low leadership stat, as long as he also has a high
bravery stat, he can win the battle in a single blow
  potentially.
U: Splendid! So, greatuncle, how exactly can I use those
  battle skills?
G: In order to use them you have to accumulate what is
called "fighting spirit" (闘志). The required amount of
fighting spirit you need depends on the specific battle
  skill you want to activate.
U: Fighting spirit?...collecting...?
G: Fighting spirit is gathered gradually while you fight the
enemy. Try it for yourself and you will understand how it
works. Anyhow, we have to attack the Ota battalion first.
U: I'm ready to attack!

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's accumulate enough fighting spirit to use the "spear 2"
battle skill.
1)Select the battalion led by Hojou Ujimasa (北条氏政).
2)Select the Ota battalion as your target.
3)Press triangle, select "confirm" and change the mode to
 "progress".

G: as you can see there's a bar which can be found above the
battalion information window. this bar fills gradually
and is what we call "fighting spirit"!
U: AH! So this is what fighting spirit looks like!
  I get it now.
G: You can also see the same bar filling below your avatar.
Do you see the "spear 2" (槍衾之二) button glowing?
U: AH! this bar also represent the amount of collected
fighting spirit! So, I can use the directional pad
left/right buttons to move the cursor between skills,
  right?
G: Press and hold L1 and then press R1. By doing this you
  will unleash your battle skill.
U: Got it. I have to press R1 while pressing and holding L1.
Just leave it to me! Watch the brave Ujimasa win
  this fight!

Practice time!

Tasks:
Activating your battle skill:
Let's activate Hojou Ujimasa's battle skill
1)Press R2
2)In the battalion information window at the right of the
screen, move the cursor to the "spear 2" (槍衾之二) tab.
3)While pressing and holding L1, press R1

Ota Sukemasa (太田資正): What a destructive power...

U: What do you think, greatuncle? I just had them taste my
  sharp spears!
G: Great. this is the "spear 2" skill. By the way, you have
another way in which you can activate skills.
U: Another way?
G: Yes. You can select a battalion and then select the skill
you want to use from the battalion command menu. Make
  sure to remember this!
U: So in short, I can either choose the skill at the right
top of the screen and then R1+L1, or I can select the
battalion with the cursor and then access the skill from
  the battalion command menu.
G: Exactly. Now, you just used your skill perfectly during
the battle. However, you haven't used a "combined skill
  attack" yet.
U: A combined skill attack?
G: When a skill is activated, if your battle formation
contains another unit or units of the same type,
a combined skill attack can be unleashed. The damage that
can be dealt when this occurs is higher than a regular
  skill attack.
U: But...it looks like no one in my battalion felt like
joining my "spear 2" attack! Why is that?
G: Well, the likelihood of a combined skill attack to happen
is shown in the unit list window if you press L1.
You can see it in percentage rates near the names of each
unit. these numbers represent the probability of each
unit to join your skill attack with a one of it's own.
U: Probability you say...so it seems I just didn't have a
  luck last time.
G: Yes. it looks like you didn't, but don't feel
discouraged. Just accumulate some more fighting spirit
once again and try using your skill one more time.
You may succeed this time. By the way, speaking of
combined skill attacks, I still remember that hot summer
day, when my brother and your grandfather Ujitsuna used
  one in battle...
U: (Oh no! He starts again...) I..I want to try this one
  more time! Let's go everyone!

Practice time!

Tasks:
* Battle skills and combined skill attacks:
1)Resume your fight with the enemy and accumulate fighting
 spirit until you
have enough to use the "spear 2" skill again.
2)Activate the "spear 2" skill.

Ota Sukemasa: I had no idea they are that powerful...

U: YES! It succeeded! This is the might of the Hojou clan!
G: Great. I'll tell you another thing. The likelihood of a
combined skill attack to occur is greater if the officers
aptitudes towards the branch they belong to is higher.
What is the conclusion we can reach from this?
U: The conclusion? It's that...well...
G: If it's combined skill attacks we are aiming for, we
should assemble a battalion which composed of officers
from the same branch which also have high aptitude
towards this particular branch (infantry, cavalry, etc.)
U: I see. Same branch as well as high aptitude. You have a
  great point here, greatuncle!
G: However, using this strategy has one weakness. It's also
makes us vulnerable to the "hit all/branch" (同射) skill.
If the enemy uses this skill, he can damage all units
that belong to the same branch in one hit, so you better
  watch out for this.
U: Hmm...which means that a battalion that consist of solely
units from the same branch isn't necessarily strong! What
a terrific foresight you have, greatuncle!
G: I begin to feel uneasy now with so many compliments...
anyway, the important thing is to always pay attention to
the situation at hand and act
accordingly. In addition, there is one more way to make
your skill attacks stronger. This way involves combining
your regular skill attack with a different type of skill
  called a "buff skill.
U: Combining?
G: Yes. But first, let's see what kinds of battle skills are
there. Take a look in this list:

* Battle skills types

branch battle skills (兵科戦法) - can be used to attack and
                               damage the enemy
status battle skills (妨害戦法) - can be used to inflict
                               status ailments upon
                               the enemy
recovery battle skills (回復戦法) - can be used to heal
                                 injured units
branch buffing skills (兵科強化戦法) - raises attack power of
                                   all units that belong to
                                                                       a particular branch
all buffing skills (全体強化戦法) - raises attack power of all
                                units

U: HO, HO, HO!
G: Another important thing is that branch buffing skills and
all buffing skills don't only raise the battalion's
attacking power, but also increase the damage inflicted
by the battle skills they are using. Now, in order to use
buffed skill attacks you have to select a buffing skill
first, and then, a regular one, understood?
U: Yes. This will be very beneficial indeed.
G: Great. So, the battalion we assembled earlier also
includes officer Tsunashige. As we already know, he has a
great buff skill called" god of war"?(八幡之備).
U: So if we use his "god of war" skill first and then we use
my "spear 2" skill,we should hit our enemies pretty hard.
G: Exactly. Now let's try this on the battlefield. Gather
some fighting spirit first, then activate "the god of
war" skill and finally, use the "spear 2" skill. Do it in
that order and watch the fireworks!

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's combine a buffing battle skill with a regular one
1)Accumulate enough fighting spirit so you can use the "god
of war" and the "spear 2" skills consecutively.
2)Use the "god of war" (八幡之備) skill and then the "spear 2"
(槍衾之二) skill. don't let the effect of the "god of war"
skill to wear off before you use the "spear 2" skill.

Ota sukemasa: We're doomed...

U: WOAH! That is what I call a terrifying power of
destruction! I didn't have a clue we can be so strong
  really...We are absolutely frightening!
G: And that is all thanks to officer Tsunashige! I guess
they don't call him "the foxglove" (a spiky plant
species) for nothing. He has such an elegant style!
  A sight to behold!
U: G..greatuncle? But it was I who used the "spear 2"
  skill, no?
G: Officer Tsunashige has been recruited by my brother,
Ujitsuna and became a vital part of the clan since then.
He has an astounding record. My brother sure had a keen
  eye for discovering great talents.
U: B..but what about me, greatuncle?
G: Now let me tell you some more about officer Tsunashige...
U: I don't think I want to hear this...

Chapter 7: Capturing the enemy base
-----------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.Going to war 3: fighting in the enemy castle vicinity
2.How to capture the enemy castle

U: OK. We set up the battle formation, learned about skills,
  and gathered
revenue and soldiers. The Hojou clan is totally
  secure now!
G: Secure? You seem to forgot the most important thing.
Being secured is not supposed to be our goal.
U: I know. Our target is to attack the enemy castle and
  expand our territories!
G: Precisely. If your father could hear what you said just
now, he would be totally broken.
U: OH! Just look at Iwatsuki castle! Their military power
got lowered and the blue bar beneath it cut short. It's a
good opportunity to attack them, don't you think?
You are sharp today aren't ya?! According to a rumor,
there was an internal rebellion within the Ota clan.
A rebellion they had to quell. What we see here is the
aftermath of the conflict. they seem tired from fighting
each other so it's just the time we should attack.
U: So, what are waiting for then?
G: We are not. First, you need to form a battalion and order
them to attack the castle. When the castle's number of
soldiers reaches 0, we can capture it.
U: A good point. so In short, in order to capture a castle,
we have to lower its number of soldiers to 0. But what
about the blue bar beneath the number of soldiers? What
does it represent? Maybe the number of cats within the
  castle? Or was it dogs?
G: (This is getting ridiculous...) And suppose we know how
many dogs and cats are in there, how can this be any help
for us? This number signifies the castle's endurance
(耐久). You can see it diminished gradually as we attack
  the castle.
U: AH! endurance it is. Well, it was just one of my jokes of
course. It looks like you have a difficulty to understand
  them though...
G: Ah...a joke...Anyway, if we can manage to reduce the
endurance bar to 0, the number of soldiers inside the
castle will start to drop rapidly.
U: In other words, as long as there are many soldiers in the
castle, we cannot make it fall.
G: Indeed. This also means we can attack the soldiers
directly from afar by using archers and riflemen while
ignoring the castle's endurance altogether. However,
because these units have a low defence it will be
difficult to conquer the castle in this indirect method.
Instead, we should lower the castle's endurance by
attacking it directly with infantry or cavalry units
while ignoring the soldiers in it. Things will be less
  difficult that way.
U: I gather that no matter how you put it, it's not going to
  be easy.
G: Easy?! No castle is easy to capture! For generations,
  the Hojou clan...
U: AH, greatuncle! I have a question. What does the blue
square near the number 1500 refer to?
G: This square represents the castle's morale (士気). It gets
lower the longer the enemy fights. It changes colour from
blue to green to yellow to red. When it becomes 0, even
if there are still soldiers in the castle, it will fall
regardless. I will teach you more about this in another
occasion since it's a bit difficult to understand.
U: (Yes! It seems I managed to change the subject. I can't
listen to the old geezer's old stories anymore...)
*cough* So, it's about time we take advantage of this
great opportunity. We can't sit here doing nothing
forever, can we? Let's go to war immediately!
G: I'll just give you one warning before we go. Enemy
attacks from a castle are furious and severe. Besides,
they can use skills, too. If the enemy uses a skill while
he is in his castle, the effect can be tremendous.
It can potentially damage all our units severely, so
watch out for this when surrounding the enemy castle.
U: Iwatsuki castle is a formidable one indeed. I'm a little
  afraid to attack it now...
G: You have nothing to worry about. I have quietly recruited
a very large number of soldiers, so as long as you deploy
many, we shouldn't have any problem succeeding.
U: That's superb, greatuncle! We can overwhelm them just by
  sheer numbers.
G: This time you can form a battalion in any way you wish.
Use everything you learned about battle formations and
skills on the battlefield. We must
capture Iwatsuki castle no matter what!
U: Just leave it to me! I shall set up the perfect battalion
and make Iwatsuki castle fall in front of your eyes!
G: One more tip. You can press and hold X and then move the
left stick to stretch a rectangle on the map. By doing
this, you can select multiple battalions and give them
the same command all at once.
U: HA HA HA! It's about time we show the enemy the might of
  Hojou clan!

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's capture Iwatsuki (岩付城) castle:
1)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
 [go to war 出陣].
2)Set up a battalion including officers, number of soldiers,
 branches and battle formation.
3)Select Iwatsuki castle as your target
4)Press triangle, select "confirm" and change the mode to
 "progress".

Ota Sukemasa: It's all over for us...

* Gained control over Iwatsuki castle
In October 1560 Ota clan was defeated by Hojou clan

U: Did you see that, greatuncle? We conquered Iwatsuki
  castle! The victory is ours!
G: Congratulations! We managed to take advantage of the
opening in their defences. I think it was a comparatively
  easy win.
U: Winning battles is too easy for me! HA HA HA! I can't
  imagine us losing any time!
G: You shouldn't get puffed up with pride just because you
won once. The enemy was weak this time so we managed to
achieve an overwhelming victory, but it may won't be like
this the next time. However, this victory does remind me
of another great one we had in the past. On that day...
U: Here we go again...
G: On that day, your father Ujiyasu...
U: Greatuncle, I'm sorry to cut you in the middle of your
story, but I have a question. If we took control over
Iwatsuki castle, does it mean that the surrounding towns
and villages are under our control as well now?
G: Yes. When we capture a castle, every town and village
that used to belong to our enemies, become ours. However,
this does not imply that every settlement in the
prefecture will be under our rule so keep this in mind.
U: Got it!
U: I wonder if you really did...Anyway, in order to unify
the country we will have to surround and capture many
castles like this one, so don't be shy of battles
whenever you see a good chance for winning. Just remember
to pay attention so we won't run out of provisions.
By the way, the first one who aimed for unifying the
country was our clan founder, Hojou Souun.at that time...
U: zzzzzz...
G: And then my brother Ujitsuna...
U: zzzzzzzzzz...
G: And then your father Ujiyasu...are you listening,Ujimasa?
U: zzzz...What, what? Ah..ahem...Yes, of course. (yawn)
so in short, we have to capture as many enemy castles
  as possible.
G: Indeed.

Chapter 8: How to maintain a captured castle
--------------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.the [restore 修復] command
2.the [call 呼寄] command
3.the [send 輸送] command
4.Changing the affiliation of a settlement

G: I have a question for you, Ujimasa. What is the first
thing we should do after capturing a castle? As the head
of Hojou clan, you must know the answer, right?
U: That's a silly question, greatuncle. We should recruit
more soldiers and attack the next castle, right?
G: HO HO...This castle's endurance is 0 now and it's totally
in ruins. What will happen if an enemy attacks it now?
U: it will be a really difficult situation...I guess.
G: Right. And because of that, the first thing we should do
is to select [internal administration 軍事] and then
[restore 修復]. By doing this we can restore the castle's
  endurance to its former condition.
U: HA HA HA! Restoration you say...Actually I knew the
answer to this question. I just wanted to check if you
  know it too.
G: Yeah, whatever. So, let's make sure you understand this
  and repair the castle.

Practice time!

tasks:

Let's fully repair Iwatsuki castle:
1)Select Iwatsuki castle (岩付城).
2)Select [internal administration 軍事] and then [repair 修復]
3)Choose an officer who will be in charge of the work
4)Select by how much to repair the castle. Go for a full
 repair (耐久=6000)
5)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

G: It seems that the repairs have been completed. Did you
notice that something is different than before?
U: Of course I did. the paint colour of those pillars
  have just changed.
G: You are right but that's not what I meant.
U: These tiles...no, walls...
G: While the repairs were progressing, did you notice that
the number of soldiers within the castle increased?
U: Of course I did!
G: That's because the restore command has another effect.
In addition to repairing the castle, the soldiers who
were injured in the battle will be healed too. When this
happens, their number is added to the castle's military
  force.
u: AH! injured soldiers. They would heal faster if we had
  hot springs in the area.
G: Well said, Ujimasa! I'm surprised. How did you know that?
U: HA HA! That's because I like to go to the hot springs
during working hours...arr..I mean AFTER working hours...
Besides, that's a common knowledge, isn't it? As the head
of Hojou clan I ought to know that, right?
G: Yes indeed. So, can you tell me what should we do next?
OH, and by the way, that is a common knowledge too.
U: Well...mmm...I think we should...
G: We should call an officer to take command of Iwatsuki
castle. Please select [personnel 人材] and then [call 呼寄]
By doing this, we can call an officer from Odawara to
come and take command of Iwatsuki castle. Obviously, we
can't run things in a castle without an officer.
U: AH! The "call" command! I totally forgot about that one.
G: Yeah right...forgot...OK. Let's call officer Tsunashige
from Odawara to come and take command of Iwatsuki castle.

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's call officer Tsunashige to take command of Iwatsuki
castle:
1)Select Iwatsuki castle
2)Select [personnel 人材] and then [call 呼寄]
3)Select officer Tsunashige
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

U: Fuuu...We repaired the castle, and called an officer to
  take charge of it.
  It's really troublesome.
G: Don't say that word! Managing our newly acquired
properties after the war is no less important then the
war we had gone to in order to get them. With that
attitude of yours, I fear for the clan's future.
I remember that back in the good old days...
U: (Oh no..He starts again...)
G: Anyway, we have another important post war task we must
perform. You totally forgot what it is didn't you?
U: W..what? Just wait a second. Don't say I forgot it.
  It was...well...ahem...
G: Tra...
U: Tra..tra..tra..transport! We haven't transported forces
to Iwatsuki castle yet! By selecting [military
administration 軍事] and then [transport 輸送],
we can transfer soldiers, rifles, warhorses and other
things to our newly acquired castle.
G: Wisely said...for a change.
U: OK. Let's transport 10000 soldiers from Odawara to
  Iwatsuki.
G: Hold on a second, there's one more thing you should know.
Just like battle units, the transport unit will aim for
its target castle once the unit has appeared on the map.
However, unlike "move" and "call" commands,
a "transport" command will be completed only when the
unit reaches the target castle. Did you know that,
  Ujimasa?
U: Not at all...arr, I mean...of course I did!
this is just common sense, after all.
G: OK. Please select [military administration 軍事] now and
then [transport 輸送] Don't forget to change the mode to
  progress, by the way.

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's transfer 10000 soldiers to Iwatsuki castle
1)Select Odawara castle (小田原城)
2)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
 [transport 輸送]
3)Select the officer who will be in charge of the job
4)Select to transfer 10000 soldiers
5)Select Iwatsuki castle (岩付城) as the destination of the
transport unit and change the mode to "progress"

Vocabulary:
兵力 - soldiers
軍馬 - warhorses
鉄砲 - rifles
破城鎚 - hammers
攻城櫓 - mobile towers
大筒 - cannons

U: Transportation complete! The defences of Iwatsuki castle
  are all set now.
G: And if you want, you can also strengthen the castle
defences further. you can select [internal
administration 軍事] and then [renovation 改築 ].
You can make the castle walls really hard that way.
U: Speaking of renovation, I remember that father was really
  good at this.
G: Indeed he was. You could call him even a renovation
  genius.
U: Father...
G: By the way, if you have 1 settlement and 2 or more
castles, you can choose which castle to affiliate it to.
You can change the affiliation of any town and village as
you like. Now, let's see why would you want to do that.
I summarised it here so please read it:

* production and recruit
If you have several military facilities like barracks and
blacksmiths all connected to one castle, you can recruit
soldiers and produce weapons much faster and with
lower costs.

* In case your castle is captured
In such case the castle and all the settlements affiliated
to it are taken by the enemy. However, if you happen to have
another castle in the area, you can change the affiliation
of these settlements to this castle. If you do this, you can
avoid their capture by the enemy, and minimize damages.

u: I see...
G: It goes without saying, but you should probably avoid
losing a castle that has many facilities affiliated to
  it, to the enemy.
U: But how can I do it? I can't see a command for changing
  the affiliation of settlements anywhere.
G: You don't change this by a castle menu command. You have
to select the town or village directly with the cursor
and then select [change affiliation 所属変更]. After that,
you can decide which castle to affiliate it to.
U: Got it! I must choose it directly from the map. Too easy!
G: Too easy heh... Well, if you say so, let's practice this
  for real.
U: I...may said it's too easy, but I may have reached to
this conclusion too fast as well...
G: Aha... OK then. Just pick up any town or village you like
and change its affiliation. If it's connected to Odawara,
change it to Iwatsuki and vice versa.

Practice time!

tasks:
Let's change the affiliation of a settlement
1)Select a settlement which is in the vicinity of 2 castles
 or more
2)Select [change affiliation 所属変更]
3)Select the new castle you want to affiliate this
 settlement to.

Vocabulary:
町並 - towns affiliated with Odawara castles
商人町 - merchant town
村落 - village
武家町 - samurai town
匠ノ町 - craftsmen town
資源 - natural resources that Odawara castle has
鉄 - iron
木材 - wood
馬 - horses
皮布 - leather
諸勢力 - neutral town

U: Well, unexpectedly, I did it quick this time!
G: Yes. Sometimes things go smoother than planned.
I remember that one time my father, Souun...
U: Not again...
G: And there was a time that my brother Ujitsuna...
U: .......
G: I also recall that one time my nephew Ujiyasu, your
father... and after that, our clan... Wait a minute!!
Where the hell did you run away to?!

Chapter 9: Gathering personnel
------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.The [hire 登用] command
2.The [search 探索] command
3.About loyalty (忠誠) and gratitude/dissatisfaction
 (感謝/不満)
4.Granting a raise/heirloom/post/official rank
 (加増/家宝/役職/官位)

U: mmm...(puzzled face)
G: What happened, Ujimasa? You look untypically puzzled.
U: You see, we managed to increase the number of castles we
possess, but now when we are dividing our officers
between 2 castles, we became short of manpower. No matter
how talented I am, I can't capture more castles in this
situation. We can kiss goodbye our dream of unifying the
country, it's all over for us...
G: Don't you think you're too hasty? Let me tell you
something. In such case when we are short of officers,
we can try and summon new ones. for example, we can try
and hire Ota Sukemasa whom we took prisoner in the last
battle. Don't you think we can hire him?
U: Well, I did say we are short of manpower, but how can you
seriously think we can borrow the help of the likes
  of him?!
G: What are you talking about? Ota Sukemasa was indeed our
enemy, but he is also a great officer with a lot of
experience! Of course we can use the help of the "likes"
  of him!
U: We will have to show our generosity then. But anyway, how
  can we hire him?
G: You have to select [personnel 人材] and than [hire 登用].
by doing this, you can hire prisoners and ronins
(masterless samurais) that live in our territory and get
  them to our side.
U: I see. So we have to hire people within our area of
influence and have them serve as our officers.
G: Yes. Now let's hurry up and try to hire Ota Sukemasa.

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's try and hire Ota Sukemasa:
1)Select Iwatsuki castle (岩付城)
2)Select [personnel 人材] and then [hire 登用]
3)Select Ota Sukemasa (太田資正) as your target officer
4)Select the amount of salary you are proposing to Ota and
Choose the officer who will do the hiring
5)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

Vocabulary:
目標武将 - hiring target
捕虜 - prisoner  浪人 - ronin
忠誠 - loyalty
義理 - obligation
相性 - affinity  良い - good
俸禄 - offered salary
希望俸禄 - desired salary

Ota Sukemasa: I accept your offer and will lend you my hand.
U: Well, he responded nicely to our offer which is
undoubtedly due to my power of persuasion.
G: The success chance of the "hire" command depends on the
officer doing the hiring (high politics stat is
advisable) as well as on our clan fame. it's also depends
on the compatibility of the officer being hired. Beside
these points, it is also obvious that the likelihood of
the hiring being successful is influenced by the amount
of the salary you offer to the officer being hired.
The more money you offer the better chance you have.
U: It's more complicated than I thought. However, even if we
manage to hire one man, the situation is nearly the same.
We are still short of manpower.
G: In that case, how about scouting undiscovered talents?
U: Undiscovered talents? I still haven't encountered any.
  Are you sure they exist?
G: You have a very lazy way of thinking. Did you know that
our clan founder Souun was a mere ronin in his
  early days?
U: OK I get it. Let's search for one. We can start by
sticking a "needed" posters on the castle walls.
We should write "war veterans, please gather here" on it.
G: I don't think it will do us any good. Ronins could be a
good candidates for officers but we don't need "needed"
  posters especially for that.
U: If we don't need it let's have our afternoon nap
  shall we?
G: We shall not. We have to search for candidates and this
is how you do it. First, select [personnel 人材] and then
[search 探索]. Remember, if we want to find them, we have
  to actively search for them.
U: Search actively? Are you sure we will be able to find
  many this way?
G: Find many or find nothing. We won't know until we try it,
so stop playing around and start to run a search already!
U: Y..yes. [personnel] and then [search]. Got it!
G: Great. Be aware that the searching process takes 30 days
  to conclude.
U: that's a pretty long time, I'd say. Can't we search for
several people at the same time?
G: No. we can only search for one person at one time in any
  given prefecture.
U: So we can't shorten this procedure then. Just wanted to
  make sure.
G: You should know that once we find an officer, we have to
decide if we want to hire him or not on the spot. Make
sure not to miss hiring a great
officer. We are short of manpower at the moment and if
you happen to find a skilled ronin, give him a
  reasonable offer.
U: Understood, greatuncle! We have to find a ronin, give him
an offer he can't refuse and hire him. I wander who will
  we find...

Practice time!

Tasks:
* The search for warriors
Let's search for a new warrior and hire him:
1)Select Iwatsuki castle
2)Select [personnel 人材] and then [search 探索]
3)Choose the officer who will conduct the search
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to progress

One month passed...

G: I found a ronin who have a very high bravery stat.
His name is Mikogami Yoshiaki (御子神吉明). He asks for 600
gold coins salary in order to join us.

Mikogami Yoshiaki: Thank you for hiring me! I'll serve the
                  Hojou clan gladly.

U: So, his name is Mikogami and his skill with the sword is
  intimidating.
Dear me! I didn't expect to find such an outstanding
  officer in the open.
G: You can't tell when or where a great officer might appear
and for that reason, we need to search diligently.
U: Search diligently... I'll make sure to do this on a
  regular basis.
G: That's the spirit. However, we have a new problem now.
Lately, our officer Matsuda Norihide (松田憲秀) is
  expressing his personal dissatisfaction.
Shall we raise his salary properly?
U: Increase his salary...so he wants a raise now.
G: yes. We already talked about this earlier. Salaries are
paid to the officers at the beginning of every season.
U: ??...But I didn't get paid at all!
G: You are our daimyo. From whom exactly do you think to get
paid from? And if you are mentioning this, I can tell you
that I, too, serve the clan for free as an officer.
However you and me are exceptions. Regular officers
expect to get paid for a certain amount. If their current
salary doesn't meet their expectations they will begin to
  show dissatisfaction.
U: How ungrateful of them! And to think I work for free!
They can choke with their dissatisfaction for all I care!
G: Don't you think you are overreacting a bit? Besides,
officers and retainers are the pillars which every clan
  is supported by.
U: I'll manage without them somehow! Anyhow, even if an
officer became dissatisfied what could possibly happen?
G: If an officer becomes dissatisfied, his loyalty will
gradually decrease and he will retire from the clan,
eventually. What worse, he can also betray us and join
another clan that can potentially be our enemy.
U: This could bring us a lot of trouble, greatuncle.
How can I rectify this situation then?
G: Raising his salary should work like magic in that case.
Please select the [reward and punishment 賞罰] followed by
[raise 加増]. By doing this, you can raise his salary and
  dissolve his dissatisfaction.
U: I see. Raising his salary is the only solution to this
problem. So, suppose I raise Matsuda Norihide's salary by
  30000 gold coins straight away...
Just wait a second! you can only raise an officer's
salary by up to 100 gold coins at once. As long as he
doesn't have a big dissatisfaction this amount
  should suffice.
U: HA HA HA! As if I was really going to raise his salary by
300000. I was just kidding, greatuncle!
G: And it goes without saying that if you raise his salary,
you will have to pay once in every season.
U: Is that so? Then I guess we had better decrease salaries
instead... HE HE, I don't possess a single blind spot. I
can think of a solution to every problem no matter what.
G: Well, it seems that you are full of blind spots. You
should know that once you raise a salary, you cannot
reduce it back under any circumstances.
U: OK, I get it. Enough talk then. Let's raise Matsuda's
  salary and dissolve his dissatisfaction!
G: Just to remind you: [reward and punishment 賞罰] and then
  [raise 加増].

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's raise Matsuda Norihide's salary:
1.Select Iwatsuki castle
2.Select [reward and punishment 賞罰] and then [raise 加増]
3.Select the officer whose salary you want to raise, Matsuda
 norihide (松田憲秀) in our case
4.Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

Matsuda Norihide: Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

G: It looks like we managed to dissolve his dissatisfaction
completely thanks to the raise you gave him, so we can
  stop worrying for now.
U: By the way, greatuncle,I've noticed a command which says:
"give a raise automatically at the beginning of the next
month to any officer who desires so". What does it mean?
G: Well, if you select "approve" (許可), any officer who
wants a raise will get it automatically at the beginning
of the next month so that you aren't required to do it
manually like the last time we did.
U: Ah, it is very convenient then! It saves me the trouble
to do it myself every time someone wants a raise. That's
one less matter to worry about.
G: However, giving a raise automatically to everyone can
result in us going bankrupt so you have to keep an eye on
  our balance regularly.
U: Yes, I'll make sure to keep an eye on our balance.
G: There is one more thing you should be aware of. Just
because you gave a raise to an officer doesn't imply that
  his loyalty will rise immediately.
U: What?! His loyalty wouldn't increase despite me giving
him a raise?! It's a scandal. We live in hard times indeed.
G: I said "not immediately". It means that his loyalty will
  rise gradually over time.
U: Ah, so it means that his loyalty will indeed rise
  eventually. I understand now.
G: .........
U: However, because loyalty cannot be increased at once,
we might have a problem with officers who have an
especially low loyalty stat. That's because giving them a
raise won't solve the problem instantly.
G: Well, Ujimasa, there is actually one method to increase
loyalty instantly. Do you know what it is?
U: What?! Well...ahem...of course I know...that would be...
G: By selecting [reward and punishment 賞罰] command and then
[heirloom 家宝], you can give a heirloom to an officer of
your choice. His loyalty will rise instantly if you so.
U: AH! Heirloom was it! It's quite surprising that we can
raise loyalty at once this way.
G: Surprising?! Not at all. Did you know that by giving a
heirloom to an officer you can also improve his
  abilities? No, you sure didn't.
U: No, no, no. Of course I knew about this. I just...happen
  to forgot!
G: For example, if you give him a sword, his bravery stat
will increase as a result. If you give him armour, his
leadership stat will increase and if you give him a tea
set, his politics stat will rise. There are other
heirlooms beside those that will cause other stats to
increase as well. It all depends on what you are
  giving him.
U: I see...
G: There's more. Heirlooms are divided into 10 classes. The
higher the heirloom's class, the more value it has. If
you give a higher class heirloom to an officer, you can
raise his stats by a higher margin. For example, if
you give a class 1 sword which is the highest class, you
can raise the officer's bravery stat by a value of 10.
U: WOW! By 10! Amazing! You know, I remember I saw a
heirloom in our warehouse but I'm not sure what it was.
G: I saw it too. It's a sword which has the word "sunlight"
engraved on it. It's a class 4 heirloom and thus,
increases bravery by 7. Now, try and give it to me.
U: And why should I do that? You are a family member which
means you don't get a salary and don't need a raise.
What will it be good for?</pre><pre id="faqspan-3">
G: mmm...You are right. You can give a heirloom to anyone
but giving it to a family member won't raise his loyalty
stat as he doesn't have one.
U: In other words, if I give you this sword it will only
  raise your abilities.
So, it may be not a pleasant thing to say but I think
that giving it to you would rather be a waste...
G: Not at all! ...Anyway, just select [reward and punishment
賞罰] and then [heirloom 家宝] and give me the
  "sunlight sword".

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's give Hojou Genan a family heirloom:
1)Select Iwatsuki castle
2)Select [reward and punishment 賞罰] and then [heirloom 家宝]
3)Select the officer who you want to reward with the
heirloom, Hojou Genan (北条幻庵) in our case
4)Select the heirloom you want to give, which is the
"sunlight sword" (日光一文字) in our case
5)Select "confirm"

Vocabulary:
忠誠 - loyalty
統率 - leadership
武勇 - bravery
知略 - intelligence
政治 - politics
足軽適性 - aptitude for infantry
騎馬適性 - aptitude for cavalry
弓適性 - aptitude for archery
鉄砲適性 - aptitude for rifles
兵器適性 - aptitude for siege weapons
寿命延長 - life span prolong
逃走確実 - escape chance

G: I accept it with gratitude. This is the "sunlight sword"!
Our family crest is engraved on the blade which reflects
the light nicely. It's a sublime artifact.
U: Greatuncle...you didn't teach me about heirlooms just
because you wanted that sword, right?
G: Of course not! It's just for enhancing my abilities and
to thank me for the long, many years I served the clan...
U: Enhancing your abilities? But your abilities are geared
towards "politics". What good will it be to give you a
  sword that raises "bravery"?
G: ....OK, you win. Maybe you shouldn't give me that sword.
  Anyway, even if you
don't possess a heirloom, you can still increase an
officer's loyalty by giving him a new post or rank
  promotion.
U: You are changing the subject now...
G: Yes I am. The "post" (役職) indicates the officer's role
within the clan. The "official rank" (官位) indicates his
military rank. post and rank can boost stats too. post
can can boost his commanding level while rank can boost
  his leadership and politics stats.
U: Interesting. I didn't know that. Can I assume that
promotions of post and rank are divided to levels, too
and the amount of stat increasing depends on what
promotion level I want to grant?
G: I must say I'm impressed. You just demonstrated a keen
insight now, untypically...Anyway, There are first rank,
second rank etc. Generally speaking, the smaller the
rank's number, the higher it is.
U: HA HA HA! Nothing is "untypical" here. You should have
  said "naturally" instead!
G: Giving a promotion of post and rank can be done in the
same manner as we did with the heirloom. Specifically,
you have to select [reward and punishment 賞罰] and then
[rank 官位] or [post 役職]. In addition, you can not only
grant "heirloom", "post" and "rank", but also confiscate
  and demote them, respectively.
u: AHEM! If that is the case, I want to confiscate the
"sunlight sword" I just gave you...
G: W..Wait the minute! The [confiscate 没収] command makes
the loyalty stat drop greatly! You shouldn't use it so
  hastily!
U: Yes, but since you're a family member, you don't have a
  salary nor a loyalty stat...
G: .....If you put it that way you'll have to unite Japan
all by yourself! I'm outa here!!
U: Greatuncle, wait!

Chapter 10: Researching for new technologies
--------------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.About technologies
2.The [research 研究] command
3.Craftsman towns and resources
4.About technology transferring

G: Is something wrong, Ujimasa? You look worried.
U: Fighting in these troubled times never seem to end. I'm
starting to feel emptiness and lack of direction...
  for some reason.
G: "Never" is a strong word to be said. Let me ask you a
  question then. What is "technology"?
U: Well...mmm...that would be...
G: That would be an insult to the head of Hojou clan not to
  know what it is!
U: Sorry for my ignorance. Can you tell me what technology
  is all about then?
G: Let's start by saying that possessing technology can
impact all our forces greatly. In fact, it's so important
it can control the direction to which this country will
be heading. I think you'll understand this quicker if I
show you what it is. Let's start by introducing a few
  examples of technologies:

* straw sandals (草鞋)-Increase infantry units mobility by 4
* horseback spear (馬上槍)-Increase cavalry attack power by 4
* long range arrows (遠矢) - Increase archers shooting range
                           by 1
* horseback barrel (馬上筒) - Enable producing "mounted
                            riflemen" (騎馬鉄砲) units
* iron ship armor (鉄甲船) - Enables using "iron ship armour"
* land surveying (検地) - Increase provisions earned from
farms and rice fields by 5%
* post horse (伝馬制) - increase mobility of construction and
                      transport units by 6
U: HO HO, these look very useful indeed! But how exactly can
we get our hands on these technologies?
G: In order to obtain most of them you have to select
[internal administration 内政] followed by the
  [research 研究] command.
U: Got it! Let's do some research then. Just leave it to me!
G: Please hear all I have to say first. In order to conduct
a research you need to have something beforehand.
U: What do I need to have? Argh...Technology is definitely
useful but it's more troublesome than I thought.
G: Troublesome?! It has the potential to control the entire
country and you say it's troublesome?! My father Souun
  always used to say...
U: What on earth do we need in order to obtain technologies
  then?
G: Well, in order to research new technologies, we need to
have a craftsman town under our control. What you see
here is such a town. Having one town under our control
enables us to research one technology.
U: mmm...So it's one technology for one town then.
G: Yes. Now, in order to conduct the research, you need 3
officers working on it. And you should know that they
cannot do anything else while conducting the research.
Besides, take into account that the research for a new
technology is a process that takes a long time.
U: Got it! I need 3 officers and the research will take a
  long time.
What can I say, it's more complicated than I thought.
G: Anyway, actions speak louder than words so let's try and
conduct a research for real. Let's try for example to
research the technology "straw sandals". Please select
[internal administration 内政], then [research 研究] and
then, "straw sandals" (草鞋). After that, you have to
select the craftsman town in which the research will take
place and the 3 officers who will conduct it. How much
time a research shall take depends on the politics stat
that the 3 officers have. The higher it is, the shorter
the time it shall take. Oh, and feel free to choose me
  too for conducting the research.
U: Well, your face do reminds me a straw sandal so you may
be just the right man for the job.
G: Me?! "sandal face"?! Did you really say that?!
U: No I didn't. Now let's start our research already!

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's research the technology "straw sandals":
1)Select [internal administration 内政] and then
 [research 研究]
2)Select the technology "straw sandals" (草鞋) and then
 "merchant town 3" (匠ノ町)
3)Select the 3 officers who will conduct the research
4)select "confirm" and change the mode to progress

A month passed...
The Hojou clan took the initiative an gained a new
technology: "straw sandals". In addition, the clan's fame
increased too.

U: Research complete! It took a long time indeed.
G: Oh dear! It was so difficult I can't believe we succeed.
U: However, saying that our clan will be enemyless with this
technology in our hands is a little bit of an
  exaggeration, greatuncle!
G: I think so too, Ujimasa. Other clans can conduct their
own research and gain access to new technologies, too.
  anyway...
U: I'm sorry to cut you in the middle of your speech,
greatuncle but there is something I want to ask.
W: What is it?
U: I noticed that the number 3 was written after "craftsman
  town". What does it mean?
G: A good question, for a change... This number indicates
  the town "level".
U: Save the flattering. It's obvious for the great Ujimasa
  to ask great questions.
G: Strange...I don't remember flattering you...OK then. Let
me explain about it. As you can see, craftsman towns and
technologies have both levels. In order to conduct a
research for a technology of a certain level, we must
have a craftsman town with the same level or higher.
There are 3 technology levels: 1, 2 and 3. It goes
without saying that the higher level technologies are
  better and stronger.
U: I see. In other words, a level 1 technology can be
researched at any craftsman town. a level 2 technology
can be researched at craftsman town with a level of 2 or
  3. am I right?
G: Yes you are. The craftsman town we used for our last
research was a level 3 town which means it can be used to
  research any technology.
U: Wait a second. Was it 1...or maybe 3...I mean, what was
  the level of the
  technology "straw sandals"?
G: "Straw sandals is a level 1 technology.
U: Is it so? But we have a level 3 craftsman town. Why
should we develop a mere level 1 technology in it?
  Don't you think it's a waste?
You blew it this time, greatuncle! What an embarrassment!
G: This time I did so only for the purpose of explaining it
to you. Now hear patiently what I have to say.
U: Well, I'm not satisfied with your reasoning but whatever.
  Let's hear your explanation.
G: OK then. In order to research and obtain the higher level
technologies, something other than a suitable craftsman
town is needed. That thing is called a "source material
workshop" and we must have one under our control.
U: "Source material workshop" you say...I recall seeing one
  nearby.
G: You are right. Please look at here. Do you see this
place? It is a leather and cloth (皮布) workshop. If we
gain control over this workshop, we can conduct research
for technologies that require leather and cloths to
produce. Now, level 1 technologies don't require any
source materials to obtain. Level 2 technologies require
1 kind of source material and level 3 technologies
  require 2 kinds of those.
U: In other words, if we get hold of that workshop we can
  use leather and cloth limitlessly.
G: source materials are not limitless. If we assign that
workshop to produce materials for one technology, we
can't use the same workshop to produce materials for
  another one.
U: Of course we can't. A workshop that can produce limitless
  materials doesn't exist, unfortunately.
G: ........
U: However, Now we have a workshop under our control and I
want to research a higher level technology but I can't
since our level 3 craftsman town is busy producing the
pitiful level 1 technology "straw sandals" at the moment.
G: That is exactly why we have the command [transfer
  technology 技術移転].
U: [transfer technology] command?
G: Yes. This command enables you to transfer a technology to
a different craftsman town once you have finished
  researching it.
U: In other words, this command allows me to transfer
a level 3 technology to a level 1 craftsman town!
G: No it doesn't. You can only transfer level 3 technology
to a level 3 craftsman town. Besides, moving a technology
between towns costs 5000 gold coins, so you can't do this
  randomly!
U: Yeah well, that's kind of obvious, I think. Transferring
a technology from town to town is surely an expensive
  logistic operation!
G: So, do you know why would we want to use this command at
all? What purpose can it be used for? Please look at the
map. What you see here is a level 1 craftsman town. If we
take over it, we can transfer the level 1 technology we
researched earlier. I say, let's do it here and now.
By the way, [transfer technology] isn't a command you can
access from the castle command menu. You have to select
the town you want to transfer the technology to with the
cursor and then select the command. Keep this in mind!

Practice time!

Tasks:

Let's transfer the technology "straw sandals" to another
town:
1)Capture the craftsman town (lv.1) which can be found north
 of Iwatsuki castle
2)Select the craftsman town (lv.3)
3)Select the [transfer technology 技術移転] command
4)Select the lv.1 craftsman town as your destination
5)Change the mode to "progress"

G: We transferred the "straw sandals" technology
successfully. Now you can start researching a new
technology in your level 3 craftsman town again.
U: I see...so basically this command allows me to to
transfer a low level technology to a low level town.
By doing this the lv.3 craftsman town can be used to
research a new technology. I think I understand now.
G: And now, I have to warn you about something concerning
craftsman towns. Please listen very carefully!
u: Warn me about what?
G: Let me ask you a question. Suppose we have researched a
technology in a given town and that town have fallen into
the enemy hands, what will become of that technology?
U: We can keep it, right? After all, we were the ones who
researched it in the first place.
G: Wrong. In such case that the town has fallen into the
enemy hands, we lose the technology.
U: What?!
G: In addition, if we lose the workshop that produces the
materials for the aforementioned technology, we lose it
  as well.
U: What?! But...that's really harsh and...unfair! We are
  living in difficult times indeed.
G: However. if you think about this carefully, the same
conditions apply to our enemies too.
U: !! In other words, by capturing the enemy craftsman towns
and workshops we can weaken him, right?
G: Precisely! Contesting the enemy over technologies is the
  key for winning!
U: HA HA HA! By capturing towns from our enemies, we can
steal their technologies and secure our victory!
G: No we can't. The moment we capture the town, the
technology that has been researched there by the enemy is
lost instantly. Because of this, your strategy isn't
viable. By the way, you would be happy to know that every
officer has one inherent technology which is permanent
  and can't be lost.
The reason for this is that such technologies have no
connection with craftsman towns and thus cannot be lost.
However, such inherent technologies can only be learned
  during events.
U: In other words, there is no way I can gather these
  permanent technologies...
G: I understand your frustration. In spite of this, there is
one exception to this rule. Suppose you face a large
enemy force and you use the battle formation
"encirclement". All officers who take part in this
formation can use each other's technologies.
U: Everyone who participate in the formation you say...
it sure sounds cool but I don't think we need to employ
  this strategy.
G: Why not?
U: You see, our clan is so strong that we don't need to rely
  on such strategies
in order to overcome our enemies.
G: You are over confident. We will see about that...

Chapter 11: Procuring guns
--------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.The [buy and sell 売買] command
2.The [produce 生産] command
3.The [magistrate 奉行] command

U: An old geezer like you probably don't know about this,
but there is a new trend among daimyos all over the
  country.
G: Really? this is rather unexpected and something I must
know. What is this all about?
U: It's about the new tools of war. They are called "guns".
I don't know a lot about them, actually, but since this
is a new trend, I want them anyway now.
G: Of course I know about them. Actually, I've seen guns in
  action just recently.
U: What?! You are so old and yet you know about guns? I'm
impressed! So, if that is the case, how about telling me
  about them in detail?
G: I'm old alright, but this is a mere common knowledge!
Guns are for attacking enemies from afar and they are
weapons necessary to form riflemen units.
Riflemen units are very strong and have a high attacking
power, but every soldier in the unit needs a gun. This
fact makes the number of available guns important.
U: That's pretty detailed...
G: And a common knowledge. Now, you just said that you
wanted to get some guns so I assume you know the mean to
  do so. Am I right?
U: We have to build...something again...probably, and then
we'll be able to obtain a certain number of guns every
  month.
G: I would say that's a pretty vague answer. We do have to
build a certain facility in order to manufacture guns,
but actually two ways for obtaining them.
U: Don't tell me, I know, I know. These two methods are
snatching them from gaijins (foreigners) and asking god
to drop them on our heads.
G: Pretty close but no. Those methods are buying them from
  arms dealers and manufacture them.
U: OH!....
G: I'll continue my explanation. First, about buying them
  from arms dealers.
Please look at here. Once you build a "trading house"
(商館) in a merchant town, you can bargain with the arms
dealers directly by selecting [internal administration
内政] and then [buy and sell 売買].
U: "Buy and sell"...does this mean I can buy and sell other
  things than guns too?
G: You are sharp today aren't you? Indeed you can. You can
buy and sell provisions and warhorses too, among other
  types of merchandise.
U: Please don't flatter me, greatuncle. This reasoning is
natural for me after all. Extremely natural...
G: ...This time there is already a trading house built,
but if it wasn't the case, you couldn't use the "buy and
sell" command, of course. Just keep this in mind.
U: OK. If I want to use the "buy and sell" command, I have
to build a trading house first. How can you think that I
  can forget this?
G: Alright then. now let's select [internal administration
内政] and then [buy and sell 売買] and use this command to
  buy some guns.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's buy some guns:
1)Select [internal administration 内政] and then
 [buy and sell 売買]
2)Select "purchase guns" (鉄砲購入)
3)Select the officer who will do the trading
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

Vocabulary:
取引内容 - buying options
兵糧売却 - sell provisions
兵糧購入 - buy provisions
軍馬購入 - buy warhorses
鉄砲購入 - buy guns
実行武将 - officer in charge
相場 - market price
物資 - current resources
兵糧売値 - exchange rate for selling provisions
兵糧買値 - exchange rate for buying provisions
軍馬買値 - exchange rate for buying warhorses
鉄砲買値 - exchange rate for buying guns
金銭 - gold coin

U: Greatuncle, I managed to buy some guns. We have cutting
edge weapons in our disposal now.
G: Very good. Now, do you remember what I said earlier?
There is another way for obtaining guns.
U: Of course I remember. The other way was...asking them
  from god...right?
G: And how on earth asking them from god is going to help
us? The right answer is "produce". By selecting [military
administration 軍事] and then [produce 生産], we can
  manufacture guns.
U: Produce them you say...but buying them seems to be the
easier option. Producing them is a little...troublesome
  don't you think?
G: URGH! I just hate it when you say that word!
Manufacturing guns takes some time, but we can get large
quantities of them and more cheaply too.
at any rate, I don't think that the clan should be stingy
  about time.
U: OK, I get your drift. I say, let's produce them! I just
need you to tell me, what is required in order to do it?
G: Well, we need to obtain the tech "gun blacksmithing"
  (鉄砲鍛冶) first.
U: A tech? But it's a high level one. It will be difficult
  to obtain it.
G: It will be difficult indeed. a cutting edge weapon like a
rifle cannot be produced so easily. Beside this, we need
another thing in order to produce guns. I'm talking about
the "blacksmith" (鍛冶場) workshop. Only a castle that
have a blacksmith under its control can produce guns.
U: OK, I get it. What we need is the tech "blacksmithing"
and the blacksmith workshop. In other words, we have to
conduct a research in order to get the tech and then
build the blacksmith facility in out turf.
G: Precisely. Now, today you are in luck as I have already
researched and got the tech "blacksmithing"....What?!
U: What happened?!
G: I can't believe this! You see, I totally forgot that I've
already built a blacksmith workshop in this town
(note: you can only build a blacksmith workshop in a
  merchant or craftsman town.
U: I can't believe this too! When did you find the time to
  do all these things?
G: HA HA...I can't stop amazing myself. Don't forget that
I've been serving the clan since the time my father
  lived...
U: So, let's produce some guns already! You said that I have
to select [military administration 軍事] and then
  [produce 生産], right?
G: Yes. You should also appoint an officer with a high
politics stat so you can produce a higher number of guns.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's produce some guns
1)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
 [produce 生産]
2)Select "guns" (鉄砲)
3)Select an officer who will be in charge of the
 manufacturing process
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

Vocabulary:
費用 - cost
金銭 - remaining gold coins
生産対象 - weapon to produce
軍馬 - warhorses
鉄砲 - guns
破城鎚 - castle breach hammer
攻城櫓 - mobile tower
大筒 - cannons
実行武将 - officer in charge
所持数 - current stock
関連施設数 - number of workshops
生産量 - amount to produce
牧場 - pasture
鍛冶場 - blacksmith
工房 - workshop

U: Gun production complete! And what's more, it seems to be
far more economical than buying them at the market.
G: Yes it is. Besides, if we have a lot of blacksmith
workshops, we can get a great number of guns at once.
In addition, we can get warhorses too, by utilizing the
same methods we used to produce the guns.
U: What? Warhorses too?! What can I say, I'm surprised.
  HA HA HA...Well, I think I shouldn't be though. I recall
  being deceived by you before...
G: This is not a prank! You can really buy warhorses at the
market as well as growing them yourself. The only
difference is that this time you'll have to get the
"pasture" (牧場) tech and the pasture field itself.
It's very similar to the method for producing guns.
U: I had no idea...
G: Calling me a sly without verifying the facts first is
highly deplorable! And to think you're our leader!
U: Sorry about that. anyway, from now on I'll make sure to
  produce rifles and warhorses regularly.
G: OK then. By the way, Ujimasa, what do you know about the
  term "magistrate"?
U: "Magistrate"? Well...mmm...It's about...
G: As expected, you know nothing about it. A magistrate is
an officer you put in charge of recruiting soldiers and
producing guns and other weapons. After his posting, this
magistrate will recruit soldiers and produce weapons
automatically. He will take into account our cash balance
and the loyalty of the towns people before doing these
  actions.
U: How useful! And if I designate this magistrate but don't
have barracks and blacksmith workshops built, can he
still recruit soldiers and produce guns?
G: Needless to say, the answer is no. You must possess the
necessary workshops and technologies in order for the
magistrate to do his job properly. You must have the
  needed cash as well.
U: OH...that's too bad.
G: You should also keep in mind, that if you send him out
from the castle as a member of a construction or
development unit, he won't be able to do his job.
It means that any progress in the work he is in charge
of, won't happen. Now, in order to designate a
magistrate, you have to select [military administration
軍事] and then [magistrate 奉行]. You can designate one
magistrate for each castle we have, but you are advised
not to rely on them too much.
U: Even if I can't rely on them too much they are useful
enough! Can they increase our revenue too? This is so
  comfortable!
G: This lazy, foolish way of thinking...again! You will
never get anywhere with that kind of attitude! I fear for
  the future of our clan...
U: Great...another slap on my face. Anyway, In spite of
this, I would still like to designate a magistrate...

Chapter 12: How to build military structures
--------------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.About military structures
2.How to build military structures
3.About fortresses (砦) and branch castles (支城)

U: Greatuncle, I have bad news. Hear me out!
G: What happened, Ujimasa? You look irritable today, just
like your father Ujiyasu was on that cold, snowing day in
  the winter...
U: Whatever you say, just hear me out. Lately, those jerks
from the Nagano clan (長野家) began to attack our
  settlements ceaselessly!
G: I see...the Nagano clan...
U: They don't seem to know their own place! A clan like them
shouldn't attack another clan whatsoever! They are
  getting on my nerves!
G: (I remember hearing this before. strange...)
U: However, we can't allow such a situation to go on, so I
keep sending soldiers to attack them back from time to
time. Unfortunately, our provisions ran low as a result.
Their leaders got carried away and wend too far with this
feud. We have to teach them a lesson or else...
G: Come on, why are you so gloomy? I think I know what do to
in this kind of situation. listen. In order to protect
our settlements, how about building a fortress in front
  of them?
U: Yes!! That's what we need! a fortress!...but, what is a
  fortress anyway?
G: I'll explain then. A fortress (砦) is a construction that
can attack by shooting arrows at any enemy units how come
within it's range. Another advantage the fortress has is
that unlike sending soldiers, provisions won't be
consumed while it attacks. They are splendid indeed,
fortresses. Our clan founder, Souun, used to build them
  too. I remember that once...
U: Let's leave this story for another occasion, greatuncle.
We had better build this fortress quickly!
G: Yes we should. In order to build military structures, you
have to send a construction unit and order them to build
it. Do you see that construction unit over there?
Let's order them to build the fortress.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's build a fortress in order to protect our towns and
 villages
1)Select Hojou Tsunashige's unit (北条綱成)
2)Select "order" (命令) then "build" (建築) and then
"fortress" (砦)
3)Choose the area in which to build the fortress.
Build it in front of the nearby town so the square area
will become yellow (you can't build it if it's red)
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

U: Fortress construction complete! However I fail to see
  what's so great about it.
G: Are you doubting me?! The one who has served the clan for
generations and has tons of experience on the the
  battlefield! How foolish!...
But what do we have here? AH, A Nagano squad! Now you'll
see what a fortress is capable of.
U: They are just like flies flying into the fire. OK. Let's
witness the might of the fortress then.
..........
U: WOW! I can clearly see the advantages of having a
fortress now! Even if we had to protect a huge area like,
say, china, we could do it perfectly by utilizing many
  more fortresses.
G: I'm afraid we couldn't. You see, we can build up to 10
military structures in any given prefecture only, so keep
  this in mind.
U: Can we at least build 10 of them one by one adjacently at
the side of the road? I'll name this road "fortress
avenue". It's going to be impressive!
G: I'm afraid we can't do that either. You must have at
least 10 square spaces between 2 fortresses, so you can't
build another one in between them.
U: Oh well...and I thought that fortresses will be our
  perfect defence...
G: Well, it's not quite perfect by itself, but if we can
supplement it with another, different structure, it will
  be much more effective.
U: Another, different structure? And what that might be,
  greatuncle?
G: A fortress supplement structure which is called
  "branch castle" (支城).
U: A branch castle? But what about its properties?
G: The best thing about the branch castle, is that you can
position soldiers in it and just like our main castles,
you can give commands from there!
U: In other words, it enables us to carry out attacks from
near our borders and to take over enemy structures. Does
it also enable wounded soldiers to heal?
G: That's right. Not only that, but a branch castle will
attack any enemy that comes within its range
automatically, just like a fortress. What's more,
you can also affiliate a branch castle to a main castle
just like towns and villages and use it to recruit
soldiers as well what an incredible castle!
U: Alright, enough with the explanations already! Let's
  build one quickly!
G: We shall, but you should know that in order to build it,
you have to order a construction unit to do so. This time
however, the order should be "construct a castle" (築城)
and not "construct" (建築). Do you see the construction
team over there? Quickly, order them to build a branch
  castle.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's build a branch castle:
1)Select Hojou Tsunashige's unit (北条綱成)
2)Select "order" (命令) then "build a castle" (築城)
3)Drag the red square over the small blue one so it changes
 the colour to yellow
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

* The construction of castle "Hachigata" (鉢形城) has been
 completed

U: We have finished to build the castle!
G: Yes we did. You should also know that branch castles can
be built not only inside our territory but also outside
of it. By using this strategy, we can also fight enemies
at the other side of the sea.
U: At the other side of the sea?
G: Yes. We can't pave roads over the sea, obviously, so in
order to capture settlements that are located at the
other side of the sea, we must build a branch castle
  there.
U: I see...So we have to build a branch castle at the other
side of the sea and then we can capture enemy settlements
G: Exactly! However, when constructing a branch castle
within enemy territory, you must expect retaliation
attacks. This is true regardless of where you build the
castle, overseas or not. Don't expect the enemy to sit
idle and do nothing while you are building a castle and
  invading his territory.
U: That means that in order to keep the construction unit
out of harm we need to deploy some kind of protection
  measure.
G: That's right. And please keep in mind that just like
fortresses, we cannot build branch castle one near the
other. A minimum of 10 square spaces must be kept between
them. In addition and unlike fortresses, we can only
build up to 3 castles in one prefecture. We can't build
  as many as we like.
U: Oh really? Thinking about it, it's really troublesome.
G: Troublesome?! Not at all! You just need to keep an eye on
how many fortresses and branch castles you build.
That's not difficult at all! Back when I was young we
  used to build many...
U: OK OK. I get it. Leave everything to me! I'll build
fortresses and branch castles skillfully and take on
  those Nagano fools!
G: Somehow, I feel an urge to help the Naganos...

Chapter 13: How to set up a battle formation
--------------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.The [set up formation 陣立] command
2.The [change formation 陣替] command

U: This is a once in a lifetime chance. If I blow it this
time and lose to those Nagano fools, I won't be able to
  face my father...
Maybe their social standing is high, but their actual
military prowess is most certainly weak. We have a clear
  advantage here.
G: that kind of attitude will only invite our defeat!
However, even I have misjudged the power of Nagano clan.
They clearly despise us as much as we despise them. It's
our clan name which is on the line here so we must turn
  the tables on them!
U: Yes. This is exactly what I wanted to say. So, our
dwindled forces amount to paltry 2 units. Even with me
present I'd say our situation is quite grim.
G: You can rest assured though as I've already dispatched
reinforcements from Iwatsuki castle in your way!
U: OH, it's Tsunashige (綱成), Ujikuni (氏邦) and Hironori
(景宗)! Now if we can just manage to set up a good battle
formation on the battlefield, we will be able to fight
  again!
G: And do you know how to set up a formation?
U: Yes, yes! set up formation...mmm...let me think...OK.
I know. first, we have to select a castle.
G: [Set up formation] is a command you can give after
selecting a unit and not a castle. When you do this you
can order the 2 units to "merge" (合流) into one, among
  other things.
U: OK, we really don't don't have time for explanations
right now. Let's set up a formation and get ready to
  attack!
G: Alright. I'll make it short then. When you select the
"set up formation" command, you can choose the
participating units and their battle formation on screen.
Once you do that and point a destination, each one of the
participating units will move towards the selected
destination and upon arriving, merge into one, big
  battalion.
U: I see...It implies that just because I gave the "merge"
command doesn't mean that I will have a large battalion
  right away, am I correct?
G: Exactly. The destination point you specify is the merging
point of the units. Just make sure you use this command
  when needed. Well, enough talk.
Let's set up a formation quickly! This time the enemy is
strong so forming a 5 units battalion is highly
  recommended.
U: All units, merge together! We shall gain number
  superiority and crush the enemy!

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's set up a formation:
1)Select the Hojou Ujimasa unit
2)Select the [set up formation 陣立] command
3)Pick up 5 units for the battalion, select the battle
 formation and finally, select "confirm".
4)Select the merging point and then "confirm"

U: Formation set up complete! As I predicted earlier, now
that we joined forces together, the soldiers look very
  energetic and motivated.
G: That's great. Keep in mind that the stats of this newly
formed battalion are decided according to each officer's
individual stats. This means that the officer with the
highest bravery stat will contribute it to the new
battalion. likewise, the officer with the highest
leadership stat will contribute it to the battalion too
and so on. Unfortunately, it seems that your unit hasn't
contributed anything to the merged battalion...
U: My unit hasn't contributed nothing... But that means...
  Wait a minute!
G: ...Anyway, the new battalion has now the bravery and
leadership stats of officer Tsunashige's unit and the
  intelligence stat of my unit.
U: I see...so this is how things work. It means that when
combining forces, the officers with the highest stats are
  the most important.
G: That's right. You seem to understand it now.
U: So, does the new combined battalion possess an increased
  morale, too?
G: You have a good point here! By combining forces you can
accumulate up to 3000 morale points. Furthermore, the
increase rate of it will be faster too.
U: So, by raising the morale to the max fast, using "buff
all" battle skills as well as utilizing battle
formations, we can make fighting much easier.
G: Yes indeed. By using all these strategies and combining
units, we can reach new heights.
U: I've noticed another thing. Before I gave the "set up
formation" command, there was another command in the unit
menu called [merge 合流]. What is it for?
G: You noticed that too? I'm impressed! The "merge" command
enables you to combine 2 units that already exist on the
map. In addition, when selecting a unit you can use the
  [change formation 陣替] command, too.
U: "Change formation"...guessing from the name, I would say
it's for changing a unit's battle formation, right?
G: Yes it is. By the gods, you are smart today!
U: Save the flattery, greatuncle. I'm still inexperienced.
G: I can't believe this! your personality has changed too!
U: What's more important, watching the current situation,
I can say we have to change the battle formation as soon
  as possible.
G: Changing battle formations according to the evolving
situation on the battlefield is a testimony for great
commanding skills. However, even I fail to get your point
this time. What formation do you think would be more
beneficial to us now and why?
U: The battalion consists of one cavalry unit, 2 infantry
units and 2 riflemen units which means that the ratio
between the units that attack directly and the units that
attack from afar is roughly 50:50. In such case we need a
formation that boosts the attacking power of both melee
and ranged units. Thus, the most suitable one would be the
  "crescent moon" formation.
G: What can I say, your judgement is right.
U: Not to the same extent as my father though...Anyway,
let's select the battalion now and change their
  formation.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's change the current battle formation:
1)Select the Hojou Ujimasa unit
2)select the [change formation 陣替] command and then select
 the "crescent moon" (堰月) formation

U: Left and right units retreat! Change to "crescent moon"
formation now! What the...! I just changed the formation
and the battalion's morale dropped as a result. Why is
  that?
G: Changing a formation places a burden on the battalion so
the morale will drop by 10 each time you do it. Keep this
  in mind.
U: And still, I think that this move was worth it. We will
just have to use it carefully and only when necessary.
G: You are correct. It seems I was wrong about you after
  all, Ujimasa!
U: It also seems that we have talked enough.
  Let's go, greatuncle!
G: With such a great leader, the whole of Japan is within
our grasp even without changing formations...

Chapter 14: How to raise fame
-----------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter;
1.About fame (名声)
2.Establishments that can increase fame
3.The [diplomacy 外交] command (forming an alliance)
4.When does the fame stat rise or drop

U: Greatuncle, I wanted to ask you something.
G: What is it?
U: It's about fame. What is it all about actually?
G: You are kidding me right? That's a really elementary
thing not to know! Do you have a fever or something?
U: I have no fever and there is no need to be cynical! It's
just that it stood our at numerous occasions during our
previous conversations, but we are yet to discuss this
  thoroughly yet.
G: I see...Well about fame, it is no less important than
  money and provisions.
U: So it is important indeed. The great general I am,I could
see through it right away and smell that it's important.
G: Yeah, yeah...Let's go on shall we? "Fame" actually
represents the respect that other clans and the country
citizens have towards us. It's a daimyo's status or rank,
so to speak. When our fame rises, we can buy higher level
heirlooms from the nobles and promote officers to higher
ranks. Furthermore, the loyalty of the townspeople that
are under our rule will increase by a larger margin each
month. Do you understand now the importancy of fame?
U: Yes I get it now. However, I'm a bit worried about how
our fame compares to other clans.
G: Well, unfortunately, our fame isn't high comparing to
other clans at the moment. we need to raise it.
U: But how can we raise it?
G: There are several ways in order to do so.
The best way is to build "fame raising establishments"
  in our towns.
U: HO HO! "fame raising establishments" you say...That's a
rather precise way to describe them.
G: I've compiled a list of all fame raising establishments.
  Take a look:

Facilities that raise fame:

* Tea house (茶室) - Can be built in merchant towns. Makes
visits by tea ceremony experts more
                                       frequent.
* Temple (寺) - Can be built inside villages. Makes visits
               by buddhist monks more frequent.
* Imperial court (公家館) - Can be built in warrior towns.
                          Makes visits by courtiers more
                                                  frequent.
* Church (教会) - Can be built in craftsman towns.
Makes visits by european traders more
                                frequent.
U: I see. Every type of settlement has a corresponding type
  of fame raising establishment.
G: Yes. And in order for intellectuals like monks and
courtiers to visit our towns, we need at least one
corresponding fame raising establishment. Otherwise, they
won't pay us a visit at all. Keep this in mind. Now, as
one try is worth thousand words I suggest that we try
and build a fame raising establishment at once.
U: We have to build it in our towns which means that we have
to select [internal administration 内政] and then
  [develop 開発], right?
G: That's right. You have become accustomed to this, at last.
U: HA HA HA! You have finally noticed my natural talents,
  greatuncle...
G: OK then. Now please choose one of the fame increasing
  establishments
(tea house, temple, imperial court, church) and built it
in a suitable town. After you are done, make the time
progress till the next month and look the end of month
  report.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's build a fame raising establishment
1)Select [internal administration 内政] and then
 [develop 開発]
2)choose a town in which to build the establishment and the
officer who will be in charge of the work
3)Select the establishment you want to build and change the
 mode to progress
4)After construction has been completed, wait until the end
 of the month

* Your fame has just passed 300! Citizen loyalty recovery
increased by 3. You can also acquire higher level
 heirlooms as well.

U: HO HO! It seems that our fame just hit a new level!
G: So it seems. Building one fame increasing establishment
adds 3 points to it. In addition, for every 100 fame
points we have, the loyalty recovery rate increases by
  1 point.
U: I see! In other words, if we raise our fame to the max by
  building many more establishments...
G: We will fall bankrupt and get destroyed by our enemies.
Why do you always have to go extreme?! I can assure you
that nothing good will come out of it. Compromising
between fame and income is the most important point!
  My brother Ujitsuna used to...
U: Well, what about that then? First, we will raise our fame
by building a few fame increasing establishments and
then, we'll demolish them and then, rebuild them again
and gain our lost fame back...
G: If we'll demolish them our fame will drop naturally and
if we'll rebuild them it will rise again to its previous
  value of course.
U: I thought so...
G: While we are discussing this, you should know that if our
fame is high, we can take advantage of it and use
  "diplomacy" (外交).
U: Now that's remarkable!
G: mmm...I haven't explained to you about diplomacy yet...
Well, in short, "diplomacy" means negotiations with other
daimyos for example in order to forge an alliance.
U: forging an alliance? My father was good at that...
G: Your father certainly used to make the most of it.
An alliance is, essentially, tying our hand with another
clan. This means that each side guarantee to fight
alongside the other when needed. In other words, should
a difficult situation arise at their side, we must send
supporting teams to fight alongside them. On the other
hand, if we have a difficult situation on our side, we
can request help from them, too.
U: I see. This is really useful! We will definitely have a
hard time if all the clans surrounding us are our
  enemies...
G: Exactly. Forging alliances is a must in order to live
through this war. Now, you should know that fame is
important for forging alliances too. As a matter of fact,
forging alliances is only one part of diplomacy.
  Please take a look:

Diplomacy commands 1:

Forge an alliance (同盟) - Forge an alliance with another
                         clan. Effective for 60 months.
Request help (要請) - When it is used, the allies will send
troops towards our castle and help us
                                        fight.
Extend (延長) - Used to extend and existing alliance or a
cease fire agreement. As long as we accept
the terms of the other side, the extend
              should go successful.
Tear (破棄) - Tear the alliance agreement to pieces.

U: ...
G: The [extend] command is special. You can use it to extend
an existing alliance or a cease fire agreement, but only
when it is about to expire so keep this in mind. mmm...
  What happened, Ujimasa?
U: Well, now that you told me about forging alliances,
I feel an urge to try it myself. Let's form one one with
  another clan.
G: mmm...Now is certainly not a bad time to forge an
alliance, but I wonder who our partner might be... We
face many enemies in the kanto region. Forging an
alliance with one of them could really benefit us. Let's
take Takeda Harunobu (武田晴信) (a.k.a the tiger of kai)
for example.Try sitting with him over a few cups of sake.
U: Takeda Harunobu? He is a great warrior who used to fight
against my father back then. Could he possibly be
interested in forging an alliance with us?
G: Takeda has just finished another war round with Uesugi
Kenshin (上杉謙信) (a.k.a the god of war) so I don't think
he has a remaining power too fight us too. The chances
for establishing an alliance with him are high at the
  moment.
U: I see. Well, let's go to his house and offer him an
  alliance.
G: Yes. Just select [diplomacy 外交] and then
  [forge alliance 同盟].
I pray for our success. You should pray too, Ujimasa!

Practice time!

Let's forge an alliance with another clan:
1)Select the [diplomacy 外交] command and then
 [forge alliance 同盟]
2)Choose the Takeda clan (武田家) as your target for the
 negotiations
3)Select the officer who will carry out the negotiations and
 select "confirm".
4)Change the mode to "progress"
note: I will assume that you chose Genan as the officer who
     will carry out the negotiation.

G: There is a fear that sometimes the daimyo we want to
negotiate with, will demand hostages in order to cut the
deal but things should go smoothly this time.
G: I'm going to begin the negotiations with the Takeda clan
now. Ujimasa, wait for me outside until I finish it and
  bring the (hopefully) good news.

In Takeda's house:

G: I'm very humbly pleased to meet you, dear sir.
T: State your business Genan, I ain't got the whole day.
G: Well, actually I came here to ask you to forge an
alliance with our clan in behalf of our daimyo Ujimasa.
T: You don't have to ask. Tell Ujimasa that I approve this
  alliance.
G: You have relieved me from the burden on my shoulders.
  I shall leave now then.

U: If the "tiger of kai" is on our side, our power will grow
a hundred times than before. I can't believe I've been
gifted by god twice now as it seems have a talent for
  diplomacy too!
G: However, when we want to forge an alliance with another
clan or when we already have one and we are asking then
to help us, often, they will demand that we pay them in
return. This time we coincidentally succeeded without
having to reward them, but don't think it will be like
  this every time.
U: Coincidence has nothing to do with it! Takeda just
thought that it would be worse for him to make us his
  enemies.
G: Maybe you're right. By the way, Ujimasa, when I
introduced the [diplomacy] commands to you, did you
notice that there were some other commands as well?
U: Yes. The [annoy] command was there as well.
G: There is no such command! Why can't you be serious for
once, like you're father was? You may not know it but</pre><pre id="faqspan-4">
  there was a time that...
U: W..what other [diplomacy] commands can we use then?
G: Look at this list. As before, having a high fame stat
  will enable you to
succeed more easily when using these commands.

Diplomacy commands 2:

* Cease fire (停戦) - Both sides will have a commitment not
to fight each other for the next 6
                                        months.
* Return (返還) - Asking the other side to return to return
                prisoners and hostages.
* spare (勧告) - Giving an enemy the option to surrender.
If accepted, all the enemy castles and town
                               will be ours.
G: You should use the [cease fire] command when you got
yourself into a predicament. In contrast to the [forge
alliance] command, you can't break such agreement. You
should use it to buy yourself some time.
U: However, the [spare] command has severe consequences for
the enemies as they will be under our rule entirely.
G: Obviously, the [spare] command has a colossal impact.
Thus, you will need to outnumber the enemy by a large
margin as well as have a high fame stat. Consequently,
the success rate of this command isn't high. On the other
hand, if you do manage to fulfill such conditions,
you can use this command rather than fight the remaining
small enemy forces one by one. This will enable you to
achieve the unification of our country more efficiently.
U: I like this idea! It's like winning without fighting.
I admit that I didn't have the mood to hear the
explanation about fame initially, but unexpectedly,
it turned out to be rather interesting...
G: I already told you several times that it's important!
And while we are on it these are the conditions that if
fulfilled, will cause our fame to rise:

The conditions for raising fame:

1)Constructing fame increasing establishments
2)Be the first in the country to obtain a technique
(doesn't matter which)
3)Accept a help request made by an allied clan
4)releasing prisoners
5)Conquering main castles in famous places throughout Japan

G: You will have to be careful about famous places. It's
obviously good when we capture a castle in such place,
but in the other hand if we have a castle captured there
  by the enemy...
U: Our fame will take a hit as a result! We must defend
castles at such places at all cost then.
G: Exactly. And now we'll go over the conditions that will
  make our fame drop:

The conditions for fame drop:

1)Losing fame increasing establishments
2)Breaking an alliance
3)Cutting roads in allied territory or in a territory of an
enemy who has a cease fire agreement with us
4)Deny a help request from allies
5)Losing main castles in famous places

U: In short, any time we do something wrong, our fame will
  drop as a result.
G: Yes. Beware of those conditions and you'll do just fine.
Besides, if you try to give a command that will cause our
fame to drop, you'll get a warning beforehand so don't
  have to remember those conditions.
u: I'll not remember them then.
G: Just understand that fame drops have only negative
  effects and should be avoided.
U: Oh dear! You are worrying too much, greatuncle! I'm not
going to make our fame drop whatsoever!
G: This carelessness of yours will only shake our fame down,
Ujimasa! When our clan founder Souun was still anonymous
  there was...
U: OK OK, I get it! darn! Causing our fame to drop is one
thing, but it's when you start to talk about the past
  that I want to escape...

Chapter 15: How to set traps
----------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.The [surprise attack 奇襲] command
2.The [trap 計略] command types

U: Greatuncle! we have a bad situation in our hands, it's
really a life or death matter!
G: Stop panicking every time you see a few wimpy enemies
already...WHAT?!! It's a really bad situation we have
here! A life or death matter!
U: It's master swordman Kamizumi Nobutsuna (上泉信綱)! And he
is approaching Iwatsuki castle! Let's run! Now! At once!!
G: Ah, I think we can relax, Ujimasa. He has only a small
unit with him, so we have nothing to be afraid of.
However, if we ever face a master swordman AND
a battalion of 1000 elite soldiers, we cannot avoid heavy
  damage...
U: Then let's run! Quickly! Now!!
G: You have to relax first! Now listen. I had a feeling
something like this could happen, so I prepared a "smoke
  signal device" (狼煙台)
U: HA! You have gotten really old, greatuncle. Do you
seriously think that such device can stop an elite
  battalion?
G: You don't know what you're talking about! a smoke signal
device can be used to launch a surprise attack on the
enemy. It's a superb military device. When I think about
it, you're father Ujiyasu was the best at carrying out
surprise attacks. So much that he managed to defeat an
enemy force 10 times greater than his.
U: But now we have nothing to rely on except this "smoke
signal device"! How the heck can we execute a surprise
  attack with it?
G: A surprise attack damages the enemies as well as confuse
them. A smoke signal device is capable of surprise
attacking any enemy within a radius of 5 squares from its
  location.
U: I see... 5 squares radius. If that is the case, the gap
between the enemy and the area of effect is 1..2..
G: You don't have to count the squares one by one, Ujimasa.
Just move the cursor over the device and you'll see its
  area of effect.
U: You should have told me this earlier, greatuncle. So, if
I get this right, when the enemy comes within it's range
we can launch our surprise attack.
G: Yes. You should also know that the officer in charge of
the surprise attack can only take up to 1000 soldiers
with him, so executing such attacks is a little hard.
Another thing that you have to keep in mind, is that if
the surprise attack is successful, the officer will
return to the castle together with the remaining
soldiers. However, if the surprise attack failed all the
  soldiers are lost.
U: HA HA HA! Such fear is baseless! I shall carry out the
surprise attack without failing, just like my father used
  to do.
G: That's the spirit. Let's try this for real then. Once the
enemy force has entered the area of effect, please select
[trap 計略] and then [surprise attack 奇襲]. As you're not
accustomed in doing this yet, you can make the time
progress slower and stop it by changing the mode to
"strategy" when you are about to use the surprise attack
  command.
U: So, when the enemy is within range I have to change the
mode to "strategy". Then I have to select [trap] and then
[surprise attack]. HA HA HA! Just leave it to me!

Practice time!

Note: first, let the enemy enter the area of effect
     (highlighted in green)

G: Now is the time! Launch the surprise attack before the
  enemy gets out of range!
U: I'm about to do it now! [trap] and then
  [surprise attack]!

Now when in "strategy "mode select the [trap 計略] command
and then [surprise attack 奇襲]. After this, you have to
choose you're target for the attack (Kamizumi Nobutsuna
上泉信綱) and the officer who will lead the attack.
Then, select "confirm".

U: HA HA HA! Did you see that, greatuncle? The surprise
  attack succeeded!
G: That's awesome! Because the surprise attack caused the
enemy to be confused, we were able to halt their
movement! By causing confusion to only one unit,
we prevent the whole battalion from moving.
U: HA HA HA! I, the great Ujimasa, have managed to brush
even a great swordman aside! No more explanations needed!
G: .......
G: Well, if that is the case, Ujimasa, tell me how can we
produce this smoke signal device which is needed in order
to execute these surprise attacks? Enlighten me,
  if you can.
U: What do you mean by "how to produce it"? We just have to
build it by using the [develop 開発] command, right?
G: Not exactly. The smoke signal device is considered a
military structure and thus, require the [construct 工作]
command in order to be built. You also have to build it
in advance at a place that the enemy is likely to pass.
U: I..I thought it was the [construct] command we had
to use. In spite of this, greatuncle, I must say that the
surprise attack command is really handy!
G: Indeed. The trap commands in general are useful as you
can use any free officer you have in order to carry they
  out. It's an important advantage.
U: So, beside the [surprise attack] command, what other trap
  commands can we use?
G: I've compiled a list of all trap commands. Take a look:

Trap command types:

* [head hunting 引抜] - Hunt down the leading officer of the
                      enemy force
* [incite 扇動 - Stir up rebellions in enemy towns
* [halt 足止] - Temporarily stop the enemy from moving
              any further
* [regain control 収拾] - Heal friendly units infected with
                        status ailments

G: Unlike the surprise attack command, you can use these
commands without having to build any dedicated structure
so you can rest assure now.
U: No special structures needed?! This brings me to the
conclusion that using trap commands continuously is the
  best strategy.
G: Why do you always have to be so extreme and single minded
in your attitude? Our world isn't that simple, you know.
U: And why is that bad?
G: For example, if you try to use the [head hunting] command
and fail, the officer you dispatched for the job will
likely be injured by the enemy.
U: Injured you say...
G: And in order to use the [incite],[halt] and
[regain control] commands, you need money. If you use
them excessively, you'll end up depleting all our cash
reserves before you know it. In other words, the timing
in which to use a trap command is very important! When I
think about it, my father Souun used to see through
things and knew exactly when is the right time to use
  a certain tactic.
U: OK, I get it! The timing is important. I became wiser
  now, I think.
G: And don't forget that the enemy is capable of using the
same trap commands as well, so watch out for this.
For example, if the loyalty of our townspeople gets low,
we'll be prone to rebellion incitements by the enemy.
In addition, if we inflict an enemy unit with confusion,
they can just heal themselves and get rid of it. We have
  to be cautious here.
U: Nah, I don't think it will be in our favour to worry
  that much!
G: And why is that?
U: That's because I, Ujimasa, the great military genius who
shall unite this torn country, won't fall prey to enemy
traps even if heaven and earth shall overturn!
G: .........
U: Besides, even if someone will try a foul play on us,
I shall repay him the same way afterwards!
G: HA! Now I'm full of worries...

Chapter 16: Using neutral villages
----------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.How to use neutral villages
2.The [hire 依頼] command
3.More about neutral villages
4.The [pledge 盟約] command

U: .......?
G: What happened, Ujimasa? You make such a rugged face...
U: That village over there, I wondered who lives there.
G: AH, That would be a neutral village.
U: Right, a neutral village. But who are the people living
  there?
G: Warriors and farmers that are not under the control of
any daimyo. They are a group who have their own small
  military force and abilities.
U: AHA! So this is what they are all about! Having a militia
operating within our borders is most certainly
unacceptable! I will attack and crush them in a minute!
G: Those warriors are in fact samurais who are natives to
this land and have been living here since old times.
There are farmers there as well, making their living on
agriculture. Anyway, we can't allow ourselves to
  attack them.
U: What shall we do then?
G: Instead of fighting them it would be much better to make
them join us and gain their cooperation.
U: Even if we manage to get their support, how exactly can
they be of any help for us? It's no big deal.
G: What do you mean "it's no big deal?!" It's because they
were able to keep themselves independent, they could
develop their own special skills. Looking down upon them
is unspeakable! Our clan have always had good
  relationships with them.
U: Of course! I always knew that they are useful. Anyway,
what are their special skills you told me about?
G: You don't believe me do you? Well, the nature of their
support changes depending on the specific location of
their village. Let's check some examples:

Neutral villages in the Kanto area:
(don't even try to pronounce their names)

* Musashishichitou (武蔵七党) - Can send archer troops to
                             support us.
                             Battle skill: heavy fire (猛射)
* Fuumaninjashuu (風魔忍者衆) - Can use traps on enemy units.
                             Battle skills: jolt,confusion
                                                         (動揺,混乱)
* Mukadeshuu (百足衆) - Can send infantry troops to support
us. Battle skill: mole attack (土竜攻)
G: These are some of the neutral villages that are located
  in the Kanto area.
U: So they can send us supportive troops and use traps...
They do look useful,I must say.
G: I already told you that looking down upon them is totally
foolish! Now all we have to do is to pave a road to
Musashishichitou and take control. Let's do it fast.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's take control over Musashishichitou village:
1)First select the [military administration 軍事] and then
 [construct 工作].
Now, connect the village to our road network.

U: We managed to take over the village safely. Now its
residents will work for us...and work and work. I want
them to work like war horses!
G: However, just because they are under our control doesn't
mean that they will lend us their strength.
U: Why won't they?
G: This is of course because they have their own life to
manage. By selecting [mercenaries 諸勢力] and then
[hire 依頼], you can ask them to work for us and pay them
  for it.
U: So we have to pay them...I think we should go back to my
  original plan...
G: We shall not! They are not your subordinates! You forget
that they are going to risk their lives while fighting
for you, so of course we have to pay them! Besides, just
think about it for a second. By just paying money, we
can fight without using our own soldiers and wasting our
provisions. Can't you see the advantage here?
U: Why..of course I can! I understand the situation
perfectly now! Let's here what you have to say then.
G: OK. By using the [hire] command once, you can hire the
mercenaries for 3 months. They will cooperate with us
during that time period. Now, if the 3 month are about to
end and you still want their services, you must [hire]
from them again. For this reason, if you fight without
watching the passing days, don't think something along
the lines of "they have suddenly left the battlefield and
returned to their village. Traitors!" You are advised to
be aware of how much time passed since you hired them
and avoid these kind of surprises.
U: So, I have to hire them again after 3 months.
G: Yes. Now let's hire them for real. From the main menu
command menu select [mercenaries] and then [hire].
By doing so, we will hire the mercenaries of
  Musashishichitou.

Practice time!

Tasks:
1)Select [mercenaries 諸勢力] and then [hire 依頼]
2)Select the village you want to hire from (武蔵七党)
3)Select the job you want the mercenaries to do. They can
either defend one of our castles or attack an enemy castle
4)Select the officer who will do the hiring (I'll assume you
chose Genan for the job and that you asked them to defend
 Iwatsuki castle)
5)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

Vocabulary:
戦力 - mercenaries number
防衛 - defend
攻撃 - attack

G: I'll go and ask them to lend us a hand.
G: Ujimasa, I'm about to begin the negotiations with
  Musashishichitou village.

In Yokose Yasushige's house:

G: It's been quite a while since we last met, Yokose san.
Y: AH, isn't it Genan san. What can I do for you today?
G: We need to defend Iwatsuki castle and I need you to lend
us a hand with this. Can you send some men to help
  us out?
Y: Just leave this to me. We shall help you the best we can,
  and defend your castle.
G: As long as we have the Musashishichitou collaborating us,
the battle ahead is as good as already won. Thank you
  very much for your assistance.

* The expiration date of this agreement is 3 months from
now. During this time you cannot make another hiring
 request from Musashishichitou village.

U: The hiring went successful and a battalion has been
dispatched for us! Now let's have them work and work
  and work!
G: They  will indeed fight for us for the next 3 months.
However, if they are defeated in battle, we cannot ask
for replacements even though 3 months haven't passed yet.
U: They can be defeated that easily? So we can't count on
them to do their job, eventually.
G: Well, naturally, in the beginning we can't count on them
to much, but keep hiring them and they will become
  stronger over time.
U: So, in short, the more I use these mercenaries in battle
the stronger they will become, right?
G: Yes. However, the stronger they will get, the more money
they will ask for their help.
U: Urgh! Nothing we can do about that. Well, it doesn't
matter. We shall hire them again and again and send them
to work us throughout Japan. Work, work, work!
G: I was going to suggest the same thing but I just recalled
that unfortunately, their area of operation is limited.
U: Limited you say?
G: These mercenaries are natives to this place. Normally,
they wouldn't want to go as far as beyond the neighboring
  prefecture.
U: Which means I have no use for them once I conquered this
  prefecture.
G: Do you think that? However, if we manage to turn them
into our militia, it will be a whole different story.
U: Our militia?
G: A "militia" are mercenary groups that are tied
exclusively to a specific clan. First, select
[mercenaries 諸勢力] and then [pledge 盟約]. By doing so,
you can turn these mercenaries into our militia and then
we can send them to perform tasks all other Japan!
U: In other words, it will be a great idea to turn every
mercenary group we find into our militia! HA HA HA!
I have such a brilliant mind!
G: Unfortunately, A pledge can be established with one
mercenary village only. If you want to establish a pledge
with a different mercenary village, you must break your
the existing one you already have.
U: This means that the best strategy is to change the
militia we are hiring according to the on going
  situation, and to our needs.
G: You should also know that you can't change a chosen
militia during an ongoing "hire" command.
U: In short, in order for the mercenaries to be strong,
I have to choose one group of them as a militia and use
them as much as possible by utilizing the hire command.
  Am I right?
G: Yes you are! Now you are speaking as a great Hojou
  clan leader!
U: HA HA HA! Just leave everything to the great Ujimasa! OK.
I think I know everything about mercenaries now.
G: Is it so? Then tell me what do you think will happen if
the village of our militia has been conquered by the
  enemy?
U: Isn't that obvious? Since they have ties with us, this
situation can be kept and they can still be our militia,
  right?
G: Unfortunately, no. In this case, the enemy can use that
militia even if they have been already upgraded by us!
U: What?! How ungrateful of them!
G: Even though you say they are ungrateful, they cannot
resist the current ruler of their village which is in
this case, the enemy who conquered it. In other words,
there is a possibility that you train a militia and make
them strong only to lose them to the enemy afterwards.
  Watch out for this!
U: So, it figures that we have to guard their village too.
  Nevermind.
G: What happened Ujimasa?
U: Nothing. I just initially thought that mercenaries don't
benefit us much. However, I can see now that by training
them we can have strong allies. I will try to make the
  best use of them.
G: I'm looking forward to it.

Chapter 17: Laying a siege around an enemy castle
-------------------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.About siege weapons
2.How to use siege weapons
3.About the "enclosure" formation
4.About flood attacks

U: At last, we have cornered the Nagano clan(長野家) into
Minogawa castle (箕輪城). Let's attack at once and finish
  them off!
G: Attacking at once will be difficult, I think.
The defences of Minogawa castle have been fortified and
Nagano Narimasa (長野業正) is leading their forces. It will
be very difficult to deal with a situation like that.
U: Those Nagano fools! They are an impediment till the end!
G: However, even though it is hard to attack normally, this
time we have siege weapons (兵器) at our disposal so you
don't have to be worried one bit.
U: AH! You are right! We do have siege weapons now.
  HA HA HA!
G: Now, can you tell me what siege weapons did we bring here
  today?
U: mmm...well...ahem...those weapons are...
T: Those weapons are the "hammer" (破城鎚) and the "cannon"
(大筒). I prepared both of them today.
U: AH! The hammer and the cannon! I can't believe I totally
  forgot about them!
G: Yeah, right. Forgot... Then let me ask you this, Ujimasa.
What are the properties of the hammer and the cannon?
U: Ah..for the time being..let's hear the answer for that
  question from you, shall we?
G: Listen carefully then. There are 3 army branches that can
use siege weapons in order to attack a castle.
  Their properties are as follows:

Siege weapons types:

* The hammer unit - Can attack a castle directly. This unit
is slow on the movement but has a high
defence stat. It also has an
                   exceptionally high attack power.
* The ballista unit - Can attack a castle from afar by using
large arrows. This unit has a very
strong defence and a long range.
Its arrows can bypass the castle walls
and hit the soldiers within the
                                         castle.
* The cannon unit - Can attack a castle by shooting cannon
balls from afar. This unit has a very
low defence and movement speed, but
also has the best range and attack power.

G: The attack power stat convey the weapon's ability to
deplete the endurance of the castle. The siege weapons we
brought here today are both excelling in this regard.
U: I see. So basically, what we need to do now is to create
a formation that will contain those units and enable us
to diminish the castle's endurance effectively,
  am I right?
G: Yes you are. So, as the saying goes, proofs are better
than theories. First, I wont you to feel the impact that
a siege weapon has on the battlefield.
U: I'm confident now more than ever, greatuncle! Let us
witness the might of the siege weapons!

Practice time!

This time it's really easy. Just change the mode to
"progress" and enjoy the fireworks!

U: WOW! Look what happened to the castle's endurance. It was
totally crushed! That's it! From now on, there's no
chance I'm going to assault a castle without siege
  weapons. It's just unthinkable anymore!
G: However, forming siege weapons units is far from simple.
First of all, we must have one weapon for every unit we
deploy (as a siege weapon unit).
U: One...only one you mean? But if that is the case, we can
deploy them as much as we like. The whole country unified
by the Hojou clan can be already considered a fact!
G: Your estimation is far too optimistic. For a start, you
can't get hammers and cannons without possessing their
  corresponding techniques.
U: So we need to get those techniques as well...
G: Secondly, you can't buy them in the market either.
You can only produce them in a workshop built in a
craftsman town. Producing them isn't simple as well
because unlike rifles, you have to spend a couple
thousands gold coins in order to produce just one unit.
It will also take a few months to produce each one.
U: That's really disappointing. I don't think we will be
able to get siege weapons after all and even if we do,
it's just not worth the hassle.
G: Sometimes there's no easy way out so stop looking for
  one! Urgh...
I wish you had your grandfather's attitude...
U: If we talk too much now, we will let our victory slip by.
It's about time we attack already!
G: However, if we take a close look at the situation, we can
see there is a large difference in the number of soldiers
between us and the enemy, in our favour of course.
I suggest that we change our battle formation to
  "enclosure" now.
U: "Enclosure" you say...I think it's our only option, too.
G: The enclosure formation means surrounding the castle with
our forces. In this situation we don't decrease the
castle's endurance nor its number of soldiers. We only
decrease their morality and thus make them fall.
U: WOW! In this way we can win the battle without having to
repair the castle afterwards. We can capture all the
soldiers alive, too! Greatuncle, how come you haven't
  mentioned this wonderful tactic before?
G: That's because the enclosure formation has several big
weaknesses. For one, it takes much more time to win the
fight this way than by attacking normally. Secondly,
because it takes much time, there is a possibility that
the enemy will manage to call reinforcements to the
battle. If that happens, unless we have our own
reinforcements ready, we may lose the battle.
U: I see. So, unless we have a big advantage in numbers it
will be hard to win by using this formation. In spite of
this, it doesn't look like we are having problems this
time so let's use it. Just show me how to do it.
G: That's easy. Just change the battle formation to
"enclosure" (包囲) and be done with it. One more thing to
be aware of: Every castle has a number of gates. You have
to make sure that the number of units you deploy
surpasses the number of gates the castle has because the
enemy morality won't decrease otherwise. Pay attention!
U: OK got it! Let's select [change formation] and then
"enclosure". We shall surround Minogawa castle! All
units! Change to "enclosure" and surround the castle!
(On a side note, I wonder how could he pass his orders to
his army. It's not like they had communication devices at
  the time...)

  Practise time!

  Tasks:
  Let's surround Minogawa castle:
  1)Select Ujimasa's battalion
2)select [change formation 陣替] and then the "enclosure"
    (包囲) formation
3)Choose Minogawa castle (箕輪城) as your target
  4)Change the mode to "progress"

U: We managed to surround the castle. As we discussed
earlier, this should take some time. Are you sure there
is no way to speed up the process?
G: You're still looking for the easy way?!You're hopeless...
mmm...Actually there is a way to make the enemy's
morality drop rapidly. It is called "flood attack" (水攻め).
U: What?! Now this is surprising! Greatuncle, let's use this
  flood attack immediately!
G: Calm down, please. Making a castle fall by using a flood
attack isn't nearly as simple as you think.
U: Ugh! More annoying conditions to fulfill...
G: You guessed it right. Now, in order to initiate a flood
attack, we have to cover all the castle gates by
switching to the enclosure formation. If we leave even
one gate uncovered, the attack will fail.
U: So we have to cover all the exits perfectly first.
G: Secondly, if the castle is located on top of a mountain
or is exceptionally large, the flood attack will fail as
well. Besides, we'll have to spend a large sum of money
in order to carry out such attack. 30000 gold coins, to
  be precise.
U: We also must spend 30000 on top of that...
G: Not only that, but we also need an officer with a
  politics stat of over 100.
U: 100 politics?! No wonder we couldn't use it to this day.
G: Now, do you want to see a flood attack in action?
U: It's impossible. I can't see us fulfilling all these
  conditions, sadly.
G: Suddenly, you don't think it's a viable option any more,
do you? OK. For the sake of hojou clan, I'm going to use
a secret technique. Please look away now.
U: A secret technique?What are you talking about,greatuncle?
G: KAAAAAAAA!!!
U: !!!
G: YESSS! Now my politics stat has reached 110. If you only
change the mode to "progress", we'll be able to use the
  flood attack at once!
U: Greatuncle, you are glittering!
G: We don't have much time. change the mode to "progress"
  at once!
U: Y..yes!

* Now do as Genan asked and change the mode to "progress".

G: We are going to seal all the castle gates and flood
  Minogawa castle now.

* Do you want to initiate a flood attack?
 Minogawa castle stats: soldiers:2925  endurance:2875
 morale:65  (Choose the top option)

G: Ujimasa, we managed to flood the castle! The enemy can't
   go anywhere now.

* We gained control over Minogawa castle!
* In January 1561, Minogawa castle was conquered by the
 Hojou clan.

U: What a spectacular sight! Who could believe that Minogawa
  castle would surrender this fast!
G: There are strict conditions to fulfill in order to use a
flood attack but it has a tremendous destructive force.
Make sure to think about it thoroughly before you attempt
  to use it.
U: Got it! Oh...you look pale, greatuncle.
G: I guess I overstrained myself a little. Just make sure to
use today's lesson for the best of the clan.
U: You bet I will, greatuncle.
G: I'm tired now, probably because of my age. I want to rest
  a little.

* From the next chapter on Genan will be missing and the
tutorials will feature Ujimasa and his son Ujinao
(will be referred as UN from now on)

Chapter 18: Using army corps
----------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1)About army corps (軍団)
2)The [set up 新設] command
3)The [organize 編制] command

Days and months have passed...
Ujimasa fought many battles and gained a lot of experience
in the battlefield. He has grown up to be a great leader.

UN: Father, Father!
U:  What's the matter?
UN: Lately, some of our acquaintances began asking my advice
regarding various matters. They say I'm going to be a
great leader to our clan. Isn't it wonderful?
U:  I can't pity you enough with that attitude of yours...
You know, when I was at your age I used to...oops!
UN: What happened father?
U:  Ah, I just reminisced the old days a little. Anyway, how
about making yourself useful and form a corps unit?
UN: Corps..AH yes! Corps was it!
U:  Yes. don't you know what corps are all about?
UN: Well, not exactly.
U:  A corps unit can be established in any castle the clan
has in which the daimyo doesn't live. When you form a
corps unit in such place, your retainers will work
autonomously as they see fit without the need to give
them orders all the time. As our territories are
expanding more and more, it becomes difficult for us to
manage everything everywhere. In times like this,
we need to form corps units which are composed of our
subordinates and let them manage individual places.
UN: Although they are our retainers, we surely can't just
   trust them
   completely, right?
U:  Fool! A great leader needs not only talent, but also the
ability to entrust his minions with responsibilities.
What's more, even if you trust them to run things on
their own, you can always decide the general policy for
them to follow as you see fit.
UN: AH, the policy. So I can decide it myself then.
U:  Yes. Generally speaking, there are 4 policies to decide.

Army corps policies:

* Conquest (攻略方針) - The corps will attack any enemy castle
in the vicinity. you can order them
not to do so when needed.
* Transport (輸送方針) - The corps will carry materials to any
place that needs them. you can order
them not to do so when needed.
* Internal administration (内政方針) - The corps will develop
                                    military structures
                                   at will and when needed.
* Split resources (物資分配) - The corps will use only a
                            predefined sum of resources
                                                        like money and provisions.
UN: There are so many details here...
U:  mmm... Now let's try this for real. First select [corps]
and then [set up] and form 1 corps unit. You can choose
       any policy you want.
UN: Y..es. I will try it now father.

Practice time!

Let's set up 1 corps unit:
1)Select [corps 軍団] and then the [set up 新設] command
2)Select the castle in which to form the corps unit
3)Decide the desired policy for the corps to follow
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

Vocabulary:
支配拠点 - place to set up the unit
古河御所 - Kogagosho castle
箕輪城 - Minogawa castle
岩付城 - Iwatsuki castle
攻略方針 - conquest policy
任意攻略 - attack at will
目標攻略 - attack a specified target
攻略禁止 - don't attack at all

U:  It seems you managed to set up a corps unit, more
   or less.
UN: HA HA HA! It was easy. We can leave all the work for the
corps now and make ourselves comfortable!
U:  No we can't.
UN: Why not? Do we have some other things to do?
U:  Of course we have. Even though the corps are working
automatically, we have to give them new orders according
to the evolving situation. that's our job. For example,
when there is a possibility to be attacked, we need to
give an order for the corps that are stationed at the
back, to transfer weapons to the front line. Besides, if
we expect a conflict to happen, we also have to transfer
strong officers to the front in order to help the corps
unit that is stationed there. By just leaving matters as
they are, we are not demonstrating our leadership
       competency.
UN: I see. So it isn't easy after all...
U:  No it isn't, so don't say foolish things without
   thinking first.
Depending on the situation, we may need to rearrange the
corps and take control of matters by ourselves.
UN: Rearrange the corps? But how can we do it?
U:  Ah, I haven't explained this to you yet. In order to do
so, we select [corps] and then [organize].
The [organize] command enables us to change an
affiliation of a corp unit to another base and merge one
corps unit into another, among other things. You know,
in the old days we also used to...
UN: W..Wait father! I'll give this order to the corps
immediately! Just excuse me for a minute!
U:  (sigh)...(I can't rely on Ujinao to lead the clan just
yet. He needs to learn more. We'll work hard together in
order to unify the country and reach peaceful times).
YAWN!...I'm going to take a nap now.
UN: Father!
U:  mmm?
UN: Can we go over the details again? I want to make sure I
understood what you taught me about the corps commands.
U:  Yes. You already forgot it didn't you? You know, your
grandfather Ujiyasu fought once in a famous battle that
       occurred in Kawagoe...
UN: Please leave this story for another occasion, father!
Now let us review the corps commands again.
U:  (sigh)...OK. First, as for the [set up] command...

Chapter 19: Culture advancement
-------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.About cultures
2.The [advance 振興] command
3.Culture establishments

UN: Wow, we have a great weather today. A fine weather 2
days consecutively is sure a rare thing nowadays.
I think I'm going to take a nap.
U:  Wait a minute. We have still work to do!
UN: What work? I thought we finished everything.
U:  Anyone would want to take a nap in a day like this,
me included, but I have a hunch that danger is coming.
UN: Well done father! You have a sharp intuition indeed.
U:  If you have time to be impressed be also diligent.
Now listen. A clan leader have to work hard for the sake
of his clan. However, our clan is currently lacking in
one aspect called "culture". You see, when a country has
wealth and prosperity, people are gathering together and
new cultures are blooming. When this happens, new types
of commands can be issued. Internal and military
administration can benefit in several ways as well.
In addition, special establishments can be built, too.
UN: That's awesome!
U:  As long as you understand this, you can advance cultures.
UN: Y..es. The [advance] command wasn't it? If I remember it
right, you have to press triangle in order to advance
       time...
U:  WRONG!
UN: !!
U:  Urgh! (I have a headache...Ujinao actually reminds me of
a certain someone now). It's not the "progress" but the
[advance] command. You can access it from the internal
administration command menu. Let's try and select
       it now...
UN: WOW! There are lots of cultures here and it looks like
they are divided into 4 separate colour indicators too.
Yes. the colours indicate the origin of those cultures
       and are listed here:

Culture origins:

* Samurai cultures (武家文化):
Enhance the abilities of officers and enables them to
train. Can also strengthen the abilities of whole units.
* Imperial court cultures (公家文化):
Enable to use the power of the imperial court and give new
options for diplomacy while also increasing its
 effectiveness.
* Buddhist temple/Shinto shrine cultures (寺社文化):
Increase the income of money and provisions and also raise
the amount of grown warhorses among other things.
Increase the strength of our territory as a whole.
* Southern barbarian cultures (南蛮文化):
Strengthen the defences of castles and military
 structures.

U:  Now it's time for us to test this. We are going to
select a culture and use the [advance] command. Just one
       thing beforehand...
UN: Yes. We shall test it now! Let's build a great shrine at
   once!
U:  I haven't finished speaking yet, Ujinao...
UN: What? We can't build it yet?
U:  No we can't. We don't have the necessary number of
temples. Each culture origin has a set value of fame we
have to reach in order to advance it. What we have to do
is to build fame increasing establishments within our
   territories to match that criteria.

Fame increasing establishments that are required to advance
cultures:

samurai cultures - tea house
imperial court cultures - court house
buddhist/shinto shrine cultures - temple
southern barbarian cultures - church

UN: mmm...It became quite complicated and troublesome.
   Can we continue this tomorrow?
U:  Wait fool! You are not going anywhere! I have already
issued an order to build a temple. It should be
       completed shortly.
UN: OH! The construction was just completed!
U:  Now we should be able to build a "grand temple".
After choosing the officer who is going to be in charge
of it, all that is left is just to wait.
UN: "All that is left is just to wait". Sounds good to me.
It's time to take our afternoon nap then.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's advance a culture:
1)Select [internal administration 内政] and
 then [advance 振興]
2)Select a culture to advance (grand temple 大社)
3)Choose 3 officers who will be in charge of this job
4)Select "confirm" and change the mode to "progress"

U:  Should we expand this culture? Just leave it to me.
UN: All preparations completed! Meanwhile, we can expand
other cultures as well. It will save us time.
U:  We can't. we can only advance one culture at a time.
Besides, in order to expand our cultures, we have to
build the necessary fame increasing facilities first.
Not only that, but in order to unlock most cultures, we
have to unlock certain other cultures first
       (unlocking tree).
UN: Nothing is simple in this world anymore...

A few months later...
The hojou clan managed to acquire the "great temple" culture

UN: We did it! we acquired the "great temple" culture!
We must celebrate this! Let's have a party!
However, when I think about it, what good does a great
       temple really make?
U:  Fool! Do you ask this AFTER you already spent money
   on it?!
UN: We'll start to build it full force soon. Don't you think
it's more fun that way? Advance a culture blindly first
       and get a surprise afterwards!
U:  Your brain is beyond repair! What a wreckage...
OK, listen. As we said before, in order to build the
great temple, we have to unlock the corresponding
culture first. After that, just like military
structures, we need to send a construction unit to
       build it.
UN: I see. Well, that's really simple.Let's build it a once!

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's build the great temple:
1)Select [military administration 軍事] and then
 [construct 工作]
2)Select [build 建築] from the unit command menu
3)select the structure you want to build which is the great
 temple in our case
4)Select the place you want to build the temple on and
 change the mode to "progress"

The great temple has been completed!

UN: OH! Now that we are constructing culture establishments,
I feel that the country is truly prosperous! Hey, I
think I'm hearing a flute sound coming from somewhere...
U:  You can see now what effect does the great temple have.
When we build one, we can have festivals going in our
territories and when this happens, we have an increased
income of money and provisions as well as increased
production for the duration of one year. Not only that,
but if we manage to acquire the high level cultures
"local deity festival" (鎮守祭) and "god of prosperity
festival" (財神祭), we can farther strengthen this effect.
UN: Wonderful! We can go on building more great temples and
make the country lively and cheerful!
U:  Unfortunately, we can only build one culture
establishment of one kind each. We can only build
culture establishments other than great temples
   right now.
UN: That's too bad.
U:  Now, in order to build another different culture
establishment obviously we have to acquire the necessary
       culture first, Ujinao.
UN: I get the whole picture now, father. However, I'm a
little discouraged. I think it might give us trouble if
we build only fame increasing establishments. So, in
order to counter this I'm going to demolish a few
       temples now...
U:  Ujinao wait!!
UN: YAAAAA!

The great temple has been destroyed

UN: AHHH! The great temple has been destroyed!
U:  I tried to stop you but you didn't listen...
If we no longer possess the necessary number of temples
needed to support the great temple anymore, it gets
destroyed. Generally speaking, if we don't have enough
fame increasing structures to support the cultures we
already acquired, those culture establishments are lost
and we lose whichever effects they had.
UN: !!
U:  As a matter of fact, whenever we want to build another
culture establishment, we must support it with the
necessary quota of fame increasing structures even if
the previous structures and the structures we are
building now belong to the same culture group.
For example, if we want to construct 2 culture
establishment that needs 4 temples each, we need at
least 8 temples in order for both of them to stand.
Not only that, but the more fame increasing structures
we have, the stronger are the effects we gain from them.
When we demolish them, we are weakening those effects.
UN: Too bad I didn't know that from the beginning...
Well, we have to build the great temple again from
scratch now. Everybody, let's get to work!
U:  Don't worry. If we already gained one culture, but lost
its effects due to not having the necessary number of
fame increasing structures, we can get those effects
back buy building these structures again. In other
words, a culture that we already acquired doesn't have
to be acquired again under any circumstances.
UN: I see! If that is the case, is there a way to gain those
effects back without having to build the culture
       establishment again?
U:  Unfortunately, no. We must build it again in order to
   gain its benefits back.
UN: OH NO! I really did a stupid thing then! How careless
   I was!
U:  Well well, don't get so depressed now, Ujinao.
UN: I'm glad I bought these apple candies at the festival,
   before it was destroyed.
U:  You did?
UN:     Yes.At least we can still taste the festival atmosphere.
Here, I have your share. Want some?
U:  (mmm...Even when he stumbles and falls, he finds a way
to get something good out of it. <munch munch>

Chapter 20: How to gain the favour of the imperial court
--------------------------------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1.About the imperial court and contribution level
2.The [mediate 仲立] command
3.Other imperial court related commands

UN: This is completely unforgivable! It's a war
   announcement!
U:  What happened, Ujinao?
UN: What an outrage! The neighboring Satomi clan (里見家) has
   refused our alliance proposal!
U:  It probably won't be easy to forge an alliance with them
as our clan and theirs had a really bad relationship in
       the past.
UN: Well, I thought that they are going to refuse, too.
But still... Their daimyo Satomi Yoshihiro (里見義弘) has
       such a bad attitude. Damn!
U:  Getting angry about it won't help one bit though. These
negotiations are important for the future of both clans.
However, even if we are going to show our genuine
sincerity about this matter, it may be wise not to
       manage these negotiations publicly.
UN: We shall meet them near the rear gate of the castle next
   time then.
U:  This is not what I meant! What we need in such
situation, is someone who can act as a mediate between
       the clans.
UN: And who might be that "someone"?
U:  The imperial court, clearly. In these times of war, only
the imperial court has great power and authority. If we
make sure to deepen our relationship with them
regularly, they may lend us a hand in an hour of need.
UN: OH! It's good to see we can use their help.
U:  What we see here, are various commands that are listed
under the main [imperial court 朝廷] command. These
commands enable us to use the imperial court as a
mediate, when we are conducting negotiations with other
clans. Their help can be very useful.

The imperial court commands:

[donate 献上] - Donate money to the imperial court at regular
intervals and by this, strengthen our
                          relationship with them.
[introduce 斡旋] - The imperial court will introduce ronins
                 for us to hire.
[invite 招待] - Invite the imperial court to visit us.
[compromise 和解] - The imperial court will help us to
achieve a cease fire agreement when we
are in a war with another clan.
[mediate 仲立] - The imperial court will help us to form an
               alliance with another clan.
[declare enemy 朝敵] - The imperial court will declare a clan
of our choosing as an enemy of the
                                         imperial court.
UN: I see. However, it's difficult for me to imagine the
imperial court doing us all these favours. How can you
       be sure that they will?
U:  That's what we have the "contribution level" stat for.
Didn't you know that? You can see it at the top of the
screen in left side. This number next to the folding
fan, represents the contribution level. This stat shows
us how strong are our connections with the imperial
court. Now, each time we ask a favour from the imperial
court and have our wish granted, this stat will drop by
a fixed value depending on the favour asked. You can
also think of this as a numerical representation of how
much the imperial court owns us. The more they help us
       the more it decreases.
UN: Got it! Let's use the help of the imperial court now, in
order to forge an alliance with the Satomi clan.
By the way, which command do I have to use in order to
       do so?
U:  Have you already forgotten?! It's the [mediate] command.
UN: Ah yes! The [mediate] command. However, I still don't
know what are the conditions in order to use it.
U:  I didn't think you can figure this out by yourself
either... It seems that you didn't pay attention to this
so I'll explain. In order to use the [mediate] command
we need to possess the imperial court culture
"mediation etiquette" (仲位礼式). Did you make sure to
       acquire it in advance?</pre><pre id="faqspan-5">
UN: OH! So that was the effect of the "mediation etiquette"!
I thought it had a cool name so I went and acquired it.
As it has turned out, having a good foresight an
important thing for a clan leader...
U:  With the exception of the [donate] command, any imperial
court command can be unlocked by acquiring the
corresponding imperial court culture first. Once you've
done it, you can use the command.
UN: Just leave everything to me, father! I shall use the
[mediate] command and forge an alliance with the Satomi
clan with the help of the imperial court. I'll succeed!
U:  I haven't finished yet...You always jump ahead of time.
UN: So your explanation about the contribution level wasn't
   enough then...
U:  No it wasn't. It isn't easy to make the imperial court
move as you think. In order to raise the contribution
level stat, we need to use the [donate] command.
That's the only way. Donations are given to the imperial
court each time a season changes which means 4 times a
year. As you can see in the menu above, we can decide
which percentage of our revenue will be donated each
time. After that, donations will transfer automatically
with the change of seasons and the contribution level
       will rise as a result.
UN: So, the contribution level won't rise as soon as we set
   up the donation sum then.
U:  Exactly. This means that we must make donations
beforehand even if we don't need the help of the
imperial court at the moment. So, in our case, in order
to use the [mediate] command, we need a contribution
level of 150. As you can see above, if we choose to
donate 5% of our revenue each season,We'll be able to
use the [mediate] command the next season.
UN: Sounds simple to me. We shall wait for the next season
   then.

The days flew by...

UN: The contribution level increased, father!
U:  Yes indeed. Now we should be able to use the [mediate]
command. Ujinao, ask the help of the imperial court
       at once.
UN: OK! Let's ask them to help us forge an alliance with the
   Satomi clan.

Practice time!

* Let's ask the help of the imperial court:
1)Select [imperial court 朝廷] and then the [mediate 仲立]
 command
2)select the clan with whom you want to forge an alliance.
It will be the Satomi clan in our case (里見家)
3)Select the officer who will conduct the negotiations
4)Change the mode to "progress" and wait

Note: I'll assume you chose Ujinao for the job.

UN: I'll go myself then.
UN: I'm going to commence the negotiation with the imperial
   court now.
UN: Tokitsugu-sama, I wish you good health.
Yamashina Tokitsugu: You look healthy too, Ujinao. What
                    brings you here today?
UN: Actually, I would like to forge an alliance with the
Satomi clan. I'm asking the influence of the imperial
court in order to do so.
YT: I would refuse hadn't it been a favour for the Hojou
   clan.
UN: Thank you very much, your excellency.

With the mediation of the imperial court, an alliance was
forged between the Hojou and Satomi clans.

UN: The negotiations were successful! We managed to forge an
   alliance with the Satomi clan.
U:  As you can see, there is nothing to lose by raising the
contribution level so feel free to use the help of the
imperial court in case you need it in the future.
In addition, don't forget the other imperial court
commands like [introduce] and [compromise]. Besides,
if you use the [declare enemy] command, you can isolate
an enemy clan as they are declared now enemies to the
imperial court. It will be like an eyesore to our
       enemies.
UN: That's because everyone is afraid of the imperial
   court's might!
So, since we have completed this big task and managed to
forge an alliance with the Satomi clan, can we have our
       afternoon snooze at last?
U:  Ujinao wait! As the next leader of the Hojou clan you
can't serve it by sleeping during the whole day!
You should take your grandfather as a role model.
       When he was your age...
UN: (OH NO! I wish there was an imperial court command for
   stopping my fathers long stories...)

Chapter 21: How to train officers
---------------------------------
Subjects we are going to learn in this chapter:
1)The [training 教練] command
2)Instructors and practising officers
3)About instruction methods
4)About growth power

retainer: GO! GO! Hit the target, Ujinao!
UN: SOOYAAA! AHHH! The arrow flew into father's room!
U:  You useless fool! Now look what you've done! I loved
   that vase!
UN: I'm such a disgrace...<sob>
U:  You, are such a disgrace Ujinao! As your lame
performance demonstrated, you must train more.
Much, much more! Now let me see your stats.
   Leadership 57, politics 56, bravery 42, knowledge...
       a mere 35! Pathetic!
UN: I hoped that you wouldn't check my stats...
U:  With such pitiful abilities you can only dream of
   becoming the next daimyo!
UN: <sob>...But...but these are the talents I was born with.
   I cannot improve them miraculously!
U:  This is exactly what I thought. However, there is one
way that will enable you to improve your abilities.
       It's called "training".
UN: Training? Never heard of it. Sounds tiresome though...
U:  The next leader of Hojou clan must train himself hard
and have a strong sense of discipline. OK, listen.
First of all, in order to train yourself as well as
enable other officers to train, you must acquire the
samurai culture "training" (教練). After that, you can
receive training from an instructor and improve your
       abilities/aptitudes. Now, advancing certain samurai
cultures will unlock their corresponding training
commands. Take a look at this list:

Samurai cultures and the training options they unlock:
arts (技芸) - [falconry 鷹狩] training - raises leadership
[noh play 能楽] training - raises bravery

performance (演芸) - [tanka play 歌会] training - raises
                                               knowledge
[tea ceremony 茶会] training - raises
                                                 politics

strategy and tactics (兵法) - [kendo fencing 剣術] training -
                                raises infantry aptitude

race horse (競べ馬) - [horsemanship 馬術) training -
                                 raises cavalry aptitude

bow and arrow (五射六科) - [archery 弓術] training -
                                 raises archery aptitude

engineering     (射法百般) - [gunnery 砲術] training -
                                raises rifleman aptitude
                      [designing and planning 設計] training
                                          - raises siege weapons aptitude

U:  Fortunately, we have already acquired the "arts" samurai
culture which means we can use now the training options
"falconry" and "noh play". I suggest that you try to use
these training options right now and begin to improve
your abilities. First, select the [personnel 人材 command
from the castle menu and then select [training 教練].
UN: So this is the [training] command...OH! I see I can not
only choose the officer who will undergo the training,
but also who will be his instructor.
U:  Yes. and depending on who is the instructor, the
training results can vary vastly. To be more concrete,
the larger the difference between the abilities of the
instructor and the trainee, the better the results will
be. If the instructor and the trainee have roughly the
same abilities, the training will bear almost no effect.
UN: I see...So this difference in abilities between the
instructor and the trainee is of utmost importancy.
It means that I should find an instructor that has much
       higher capabilities than me, right?
U:  Yes, and in your particular case, this should be a very
easy task because you have such abysmal abilities at the
moment. Practically anyone in the clan can be a great
instructor for you. That's how bad your situation is.
UN: ANYONE can be a great instructor for me? How..insulting.
U:  OK then. Now think about who you want your instructor to
be and select him. Let me see..OH! Officer Tsunashige
would be a great choice for an instructor,in my opinion.
UN: Officer Tsunashige? But...it's written "demon" under his
name. I don't think it's a good idea to chose him and I
       certainly don't like demons.
U: You just noticed an important point here, ujinao. as you
guessed, these descriptions like "devil" and "own style"
are referring the methods by which these instructors
train. If you choose an instructor who use the "demon"
style, you will be trained very harshly and strictly.
You should know that depending on the training style
used, the training results may vary greatly.

Instructing styles and the influence they have on training:

general style (一般) - raises an ability by 2-6 points or an
aptitude by 1 level after 3 months of
                                         training.

demon style (鬼) - raises an ability by 2-6 points or an
aptitude by 1 level after 2 months of
                                 training.

theoretical style (理論) - raises an ability by 2-8 points or
an aptitude by 1 level after 3
                                         months of training.

inheritance style (相伝) - raises an ability by 2-6 points or
an aptitude by 1 level after 3
                                                 months of training. In addition,
there is a chance for the trainee
to learn a battle skill from his
                                                 instructor.

own style (我流) - raises an ability by 2-6 points or an
                 aptitude by 1 level
after 3 months of training. In addition,
there is a chance for the trainee to have
                                 another random stat increased.

U:  I think that for someone who have ambitions to become
the head of the clan one day, a "demon" style instructor
       would be the most suitable.
UN: Urgh...damn! It looks like I have nowhere to escape
now...OK. Let it be Tsunashige then.
U:  And how about having several instructors at once? It's
entirely possible to learn from more than one instructor
at the same time. You'll have to pay more for your
training, but the efficiency of your training will be
       greater as well.
UN: Got it! I understand everything now. I'm not afraid even
if I am to be trained by all "demon" style instructors
at once! Now let's call my supposed to be instructors.
U:  Ujoinao! Don't invite too many instructors! Keep in mind
that every instructor you invite, can't do anything else
       during the training period.

Practice time!

Tasks:
Let's help Ujinao to improve his abilities by training:
1)Select [personnel 人材] and then select the command
 [training 教練]
2)Select the training type you wish the trainee to undergo
3)Select the instructor and the trainee and then "confirm"

Vocabulary:
教官武将 - instructing officer
実行武将 - training officer

Note: I'll assume you chose Tsunashige for the instructor
and Ujinao as the trainee. I'll also assume that you
         chose falconry training.

Tsunashige: I see you have chosen me as your instructor.
I can guarantee that you will see results
                       and fast.

Days and months passed...

TS: We have completed your falconry training, Ujinao.
The training results are as shown here.
UN: Can you believe this?! My leadership ability has truly
improved! It's like a dream! I feel my body is brimming
with power! If I'll go on training like this, soon I'll
have abilities better than anyone else. You are
witnessing now the birth of the best warrior in the
whole of Japan, Hojou Ujinao! HA HA HA! The day a new
game is released to the market named" Ujinao's ambition"
       isn't far away...
U:  Unfortunately, this is not possible. You see, every
officer has a numerical value called "growth power"
(成長力) attached to him. Each time an officer undergoes
training, his growth power decreases and once it has
gone down to 0, he can't train anymore.
UN: What?!!!
U:  This decrease in value is decided depending on what kind
of training the officer took. You can see the details
       here:

Training types and how they effect growth power:

* Training types that raises abilities (like "falconry",
"noh play") will decrease growth power by 5.
* Training types that raises aptitudes (like "cavalry",
"archery") will decrease growth power by 20.

UN: It's true that my abilities are currently the weakest in
the clan, but what if I had the greatest growth power
among all other officers? Surely, I could improve
       significantly, right?
U:  Each and every officer has an equal growth power and its
value is 50. For example, if you take 10 falconry
trainings which as we have seen, decreases the growth
power by 5, you'll no longer be able to train after
   that at all.
UN: !! But it means that someone who was born with weak
natural abilities is still at a disadvantage after all.
This isn't fair! <sob> My dreams of "Ujinao's ambition"
       have been shattered to pieces...<sob>
U: However, even though everyone have the same growth
power, the improvement in abilities will differ
depending on who you choose as your instructor and what
types of training you take. The idea here is how to use
your limited growth power in order to enhance your
abilities effectively. Thus, a person who has been born
with weak natural abilities, isn't necessarily at a
disadvantage. You'll just have to train wisely.
UN: I see. It means there still hope for me! I was relieved
   to here this.
Anyway, I completed my training for today so I think I'm
going to take my afternoon nap for now.
U:  what?! You can't be this lazy as a clan leader, Ujinao!
UN: Give me a break, father. Like the saying goes, a child
is growing even in his sleep, so maybe my abilities will
grow stronger while I'm sleeping. Bye buy!
U:  (sigh) Giving himself such a leeway...he reminds me of
a certain someone. Maybe his abilities will grow
       stronger than anybody, after all...

                                                  THE END
