Section A1: Guide Introduction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ AO1: Overview ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hello, and welcome to my guide!

Hatoful Boyfriend (aka Hatoful Kareshi) is a Japanese doujin (indie) otome
game that was created back in 2011. It was intended to be a joke, but it
developed a life of its own. It later received an English patch. Various
merchandise, including drama CDs. Then in 2014 it was announced that an HD
remake would be released with updated graphics and dialogue. This guide is
based off this version.

Firstly, the title is several puns built into one. "HAATOFURU" is the
transliteration of the first word in the title. can represent the Japanese
pronunciation of the borrowed English word "heartful". It also sounds like
the English word "hurtful". And "hato" is also the word for pigeon/dove.
"Furu" also has several different meanings, such as swing, dump, and replace
(along with the English word "full"), plus the syllables are also used in
words meaning to tremble and rise up. So there might be puns on that level as
well. The Japanese language is made for puns.

Anyways, Hatoful Boyfriend is an otome game, a Japanese visual novel targeted
at girls with a heavy focus on romance. You play the heroine and make choices
to try to wind up with the bird of your dreams. No, that is not a typo: you
are the only human at an all-bird school. The game can and will get weirder
than that.

Section B2: Walkthrough

This section will cover the main game.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ BI01: Main Game Introduction ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As with most visual novels, you play the protagonist (Tosaka Hiyoko) and make
choices, and those choices will eventually determine the ending you get. You
can also increase your stats. Some characters have a good (full) ending and a
normal (bad) ending. Like most otome games, there is more than one way to get
the endings. A few different choices here and there will likely still get you
the ending you want. Generally, achieving an ending also unlocks one item
each in the Gallery and Archive.

There are three stats: have wisdom, vitality, and charisma. The easiest way
to level these up is to attend elective classes. Math adds +5 to wisdom, gym
+5 to vitality, and music +5 to charisma. Level these up to get some
characters' full endings. Hiyoko starts off with 1 wisdom, 800 vitality, and
5 charisma. (She would one-shot everything if she was a player character in
an RPG...) Leveling up certain attributes help you get certain characters'
full endings.

Unlock many other visual novels, you cannot save at the choices. You must
save BEFORE the options come up if you want to load for quick completions.
Unfortunately, right now, the game often messes up saving and loading. It is
very glitchy, so I recommend saving a couple times in different slots for the
highest chance of success.

Once you have completed certain character's routes, a new choice will be
available when you start a new game. I strongly recommend choosing "A normal
life" until you have achieved all other endings. Please see section BL12 for
more information.

Characters in the game are not voiced, but names of voice actors were given
in a previous release so you can imagine how they sound (and they played them
in the drama cd). I'll include a couple of the voice actors' (CV) roles. If
you watch anime or play games with Japanese voices, look them up. You might
recognize them, especially since some have voiced roles in about a billion
projects. (I used Japanese name order.)

If you are not too familiar with Japanese culture, some things might be
confusing to you. Firstly, names are given in text in Japanese order, with
surname (aka "last" name) first and personal ("first") name second. The name
banner when the birds are introduced uses Western name order. Also, in Japan,
you don't typically call people by their given names unless you are close (or,
as often the case in anime, just want to be insulting.) High school lasts
three years and is not required; most schools require an entrance exam.
Students are assigned a classroom and take all their classes with the same
classmates; teachers are the ones who move from room to room.  So "freshman"
equals grade 10 and 2-3 would be second year (sophomore, grade 11) class 3.
Students are often members of clubs or representatives (of which there are
many, from sports to drama to infirmary assistant) and they also take turns
with classroom cleaning/management. Valentine's Day is when girls give honmei
(romantic/true love) chocolate or giri (obligation/friend) chocolate to boys.
The guys return the favor a month later on White Day. For more terms, please
see section ET2.

I'll also include pronunciation guides so you have a rough idea of how to
pronounce their names along with notes. Along those lines, the heroine's
given name (Hiyoko) can mean baby chick. Her name would be pronounced like
TOE-SAH-KAH HE-YO-KOH. All Japanese syllables, except for a type of "n", are
voiced with your mouth/lips in an open position. That's why so many syllables
seem to have the "ah" or "oh" sound.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ BK02: Kawara Ryouta ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

KAH-WAH-RAH RYOH-TAH
CV: Asanuma Shintaro (Takumu in "Accel World", Hajime in "One Week Friends")

The vocal contractions are hard for English speakers. It's one syllable, but
English speakers might try to separate it, like REE-YOH-TAH. Scrunch it
together. REEYOH-TAH is closer.

Anyways, he's a childhood friend who's kind yet a bit unhealthy. Ryouta's a
rock dove.

She's may look like a delinquent (yankee) sparrow, but she always follows

achievements as different. The Torimi cafe ending does not end the story, so
I recommend just continuing to unlock the bad ending. Since her routes can
unlock similar to Anghel's, you might want to make a save on 07/07. If it
loads correctly, you can save yourself some time. You can try to make another
save just before 08/24 to save some more time.

This path (Bad Boys Love, also called Hurtful Boyfriend) unlocks when you've
achieved certain endings. You need to finish Ryouta, Sakuya, Nageki, Yuuya,
and Nanaki's endings, and a bonus epilogue will be shown if all endings are
achieved. So save it for last for both story and gameplay purposes.

Ironically, choices made on this path are irrelevant. Just choose whatever

~ ET2: Terms ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here I've included some terms that may be unfamiliar to some readers. I had
some more to include, but I accidentally lost them. (D'oh!) If you can think
of others to include, feel free to email me.
Buddhism – One of the major religions of Japan, focusing on the Four Truths
Culture festival – Classes and clubs host events for families and public
Christmas Eve – A day for lovers, unlike the West, which is more for families
Hichiriki – A recorder-like instrument
Night on the Galactic Express – a real Japanese classic novel
Manga – Comics; Westerners usually reserve this term for Japanese comics only
New Year's – A day for family, unlike the West, where there's more romance
OreHato – A pun of OreImo: "There's No Way My Little Sister Can Be This Cute"
Sports festival – A day where students participate in physical activities
Shoujo manga – Comics for girls, usually focused on romance
Takoyaki – Octopus in a ball shape batter
Tanabata – A celebration on July 7th where wishes are hung on a bamboo tree
Tsundere – Someone who is cold upon meeting, but then becomes more loving
Udon – A type of noodle soup
Yakitori – Chicken kebabs
~ EF3: FAQ ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~

--> I have a tip!
--> You missed something!
--> I have a question!

If you know something that I don't know or have missed, please email me at
[email protected]! You will receive credit for anything I may use.
Likewise, I would be happy to answer any questions. Please put something like
"Hatoful Boyfriend Guide" in the subject of your email so that I don't miss
it.

--> Is this game any good?
--> WTF? Pigeon Dating?!?!

Yes, it's a game involving pigeons (well, different types of birds, actually)
and a human. Yes, romance is involved. Yes, it's good. Strange and
surprisingly depressing at times, but good. There's references to memes,
Pokemon, RPGs, and more.

However, as of this writing, the save/load feature is glitchy. Sometimes I
just cannot get a save to load correctly. The text box may not come up. One
time the text continued, but everything else was white. There are a few typos
as well.

--> What order should I do the routes?
--> Which route is the best?
--> Which route is your favorite?

There doesn't seem to be a required or recommended order. But I would say do
the Bad Boys Love route last. It's spoileriffic, and there's an epilogue for
it which requires all other for all routes completed. So just save it for
last. Azami's two endings, Anghel's, and the bad ending can also be down in
succession with saves on 07/07 and 08/24. I do think Yuuya then Shuu's lead
the best to BBL. This way overloads on drama, though. As for my favorite, I
love Yuuya's character.

--> Does this game have voices?

No. And to that end, we all mourn not having the eternal pleasure of Wakamoto
Norio-sama's coos. (And I would love to hear Yusa's doing all those pickup
lines.) We will have to settle for the drama CDs.

--> What is included in the Collector's Edition?
--> Is the Collector's Edition worth it?

The Collector's Edition costs $5 US more and comes with the digital
soundtrack, wallpapers, a comic, digital yearbook, and the original (no HD)
version of the game. Is it worth the $5? Even excluding the original game,
four bonuses = $1.25 an item. Plus you are supporting the doujin market and
official English translations.

--> I played the original version. Is this worth the upgrade?

I have never played the original (I did get it with the collector's edition,
but it won't load for me), so I cannot compare the dialogue. The graphics
certainly seem nicer. The text is certainly easier to read. At the very least,
you should have no problems running this version with any modern computer.
Plus you're supporting doujin games.

--> Is there a sequel?
--> Is the sequel in English?
--> Will Holiday Star receive a remake?

The sequel is called Holiday Star. It has an official English version that
costs about $4. It is a visual novel, but not an otome game. It is unknown if
it is going to re-released. There is no news about it at this time.

--> Are there any more games like this?

Otome games, yes. Bird dating games? Probably not. Hakuoki (PSP, PS3, and
3DS) and Sweet Fuse (PSP) are what first to come to mind for recommendations,
as they are among the first otome games with physical releases. Alice in the
Heart is a new release for both iOS and Android, but I've heard the
translation leaves much to be desired. PC game OZMAFIA is getting an official
English release soon.
