01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, Vol. II' for the PC, an
adventure game by ICOM Simulations released in 1992.
Suggestions, comments or errors - e-mail me about it. Enjoy!
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
The Map displays eight investigative tool icons. You use them to gather
evidence.
Holmes' Book Horse and Carriage
Notebook Holmes' Files
Directory Baker Street Irregulars
Newspaper Scoring and Trial
To use a tool, just click its icon. Remember that your goal is to
gather the most information from the least number of persons or places
while visiting each as few times as possible.
- Horse and Carriage
Click this icon to travel to the selected person or place.
To close this tool, click the Stop button.
- Holmes' Files
Click this icon to look up Holmes' notes on the selected person or
place. To close this tool, click the square Stop button in the
lower left-hand corner of the file.
- Baker Street Irregulars
Click this icon to read a telegram containing street information
about the selected person or place.
To close this tool, click the square Stop button in the lower
left-hand corner of the telegram.
Newspaper:
``````````
Selecting the correct date for the Times enables you to read more about the
case if you plan on solving the case on your own.
Trial:
``````
When you think you've gathered enough evidence, click the Scoring and Trial
icon to enter the courtroom.
If you are asked to name a person or place, use your directory or notebook to
choose one. When you feel you have the right choice, click on the "Confirm
Answer" icon. Multiple choice questions work about the same. Choose the
correct answer, then click on "Confirm Answer" icon.
If you messed up you need to restart the trial from the beginning.
Scoring:
````````
Pertinent Travel clues = 7 points
Travel (All other clues) = 10 points
Holmes Files = 1 point
Baker Street Irregulars = 5 points
Red Herrings (Travel) = 20 points
Red Herrings (BS Irreg.) = 10 points
A "Pertinent Travel Clue" is one of the essential clues that you must see to be
able to solve the case and visit the judge. The number of these clues vary
depending the mystery.
All other video sequences which contains clues (although not essential clues)
are considered "Travel."
If you use "Holmes' Files" you will have a point added to your score for each
time you access the files. To avoid this but help in your research, I have
included all the files into the case's sub-section, aptly named "Holmes'
Files".
Whenever you send the Baker Street Irregulars to visit an area with a clue,
five points will be added to your score.
Sending Holmes/Watson to visit a dead end, or red herring, will add twenty
points to your score. A red herring occurs when there are no clues to be found
at a location, and Holmes/Watson are "wasting their time." A brief video clip
or illustration will inform you that you have come to a dead end.
Sending the Baker Street Irregulars to visit a dead end, a red herring, will
add ten points to your score. The Baker Street Irregulars will send a telegram
stating they could not find out any information at the person/location they
were sent to if it was a red herring.
Video Player:
`````````````
During playback, you can use the player to give you better control over the
scene. The controls are similar to that of a VCR's. Here's a brief description
of the video controls.
Replay - Starts playing from the beginning of the scene.
Play - Starts playing from where you are in the scene.
Pause - Pauses at the current frame. If you were already
paused, you will start playing.
Stop - Stops the video scene.
Shuttle Reverse - Shuttles the scene backwards.
Shuttle Forward - Shuttles the scene forwards.
Scroll Bar and Thumb - The thumbs position in the scroll bar shows you
where you currently are in the scene. Clicking
anywhere on the scroll bar will bring up that
frame and pause. If you hold the button down
the thumb will follow the cursor.
Sound Volume:
`````````````
While playing, press CTRL + <Page-Up> or <Page-Down> simultaneously in order
to will be able to increase or decrease the volume respectively.
Technical Issues:
`````````````````
If you are having trouble to get the game to run on your PC, consult the manual
for a possible fix. The game runs fine under Windows XP and below, and as
alternative you can run the game in DoxBox. I personally did not have sound
when I tried that, but the manual might have fixes for that too. If you are
tired of loading the CD and/or mounting it in DosBox each time, you can also
simply copy the game's files (incl. all hidden ones) into a folder on your HD.
There is no copy protection on the game, just remember the copyRIGHT of the
creators...
Other Releases:
```````````````
There were three volumes in the Consulting Detective series. The first two were
also released on consoles, such as SegaCD and Turbo Grafx. The games are
identical, yet controls and such things are obviously different. You can use
this guide for any version.
financial institution in the city with the legal authority to issue paper
money. In 1834, they moved to their current building located on Threadneedle
Street.
Cox & Company - A well-respected financial institution located in Charing
The clerk is most discreet.
Sign of Four. Eli Nelson is the proprietor of this timber yard. Located at 9
Elms Lane.
Buxton, Phillip - Maker of the Phillip Buxton Revolving Bed. I should
Central Carriage Stables - Central Carriage Stables is located at 5 Grey's
Road, WC. It is at this location that all of London's cabs are stabled and
mines in South Africa with Hiram Dearth, until Dearth's death in 1881. He
recently bought out all of his former partner's shares from the widow, Bessie
Featherstone, Finkel, Martin - Publisher of his father's works on baldness.
Ferguson, Robert - A London tea broker.
Florin, Fabrice - Mr. Florin arrived here from France in 1869 and barely speaks
a word of english. I believe he tried to hire my services. His accent was too
thick to comprehend, so I recommended that he engage the services of Inspector
Clouseau.
the London area. He moved back here in 1886 after residing for several years on
the Hebrides island of Lewis-With-Harris.
Return of the Native, and I do intend to read Far From The Madding Crowd just
from 1869 to 1882. He now reports on crime for The Police Gazette.
Hollis, James - Nothing on file.
Holmes, Mycroft - My older brother whom I believe to possess even better powers
of deduction and observation than I. Unfortunately, Mycroft is not ambitious.
He lacks energy and would prefer to allow a false assumption to stand rather
than take the time to disprove it.
Howell & James Ltd. - Excellent source of cricket equipment, not that I would
ever play.
Hyde Park - One of Britain's national treasures, especially for the fashionable
set during the season. It is also the chosen spot in London for political
involving statues.
Imperial Theatre - Located in Westminster. It opened in 1876 and is part of the
