(4)*BACKGROUND/STORY----------------------------------------------------
The Tengai Makyo/Far East Of Eden series takes place in ancient feudal
Jipang(Japan). It is a collection of stories written by the fictional
North American Dr. P.H. Chada. They are based on his misguided
interpretations of Japan.
You play the roles of the legendary Fire Warriors who battle the Daimon
Cult, among other evil forces.
The first game, Tengai Makyo: Ziria, introduced the wacky yet dramatic
and epic theme of the series. It is also the first game featuring
Manto(japanese for 'monkey'), a stupid, crazy and ambitious immortal
ape who has appeared in every Tengai Makyo game since.
The second game in the series, Tengai Makyo II: Manji Maru, introduced
the character: KABUKI DANJIRO, a famous theatre actor/warrior/lover.
He is arogant, clownish, and totally over the top.
He became so popular, that he was given his own original game: Tengai
Makyo: Fuun Kabuki Den('Unfortunately Kabuki's Story'). As he lets you
know in one of the game's opening cinemas, -it is NOT Tengai Makyo III,
but instead his OWN game.
The gameplay is a Tengai Makyo themed version of Final Fantasy, -where
as the regular Tengai Makyo games are setup more like Phantasy Star.
The story is also different than the traditional Tengai Makyo's. Kabuki
follows evil kidnappers from Japan to London(England) and face's the
demon Lord Gulp/Garp in his quest to rescue the women of Kyoto. The
game also introduces several new characters including Okuni, Zeami and
Fuji Yama.
Kabuki Itouryoden is a companion to Fuun Kabuki Den. The game takes place
during and features characters and events from Kabuki Den. It has Street
Fighter II styled gameplay.
Alternately, the Neo Geo fighter Tengai Makyo: Shin Den/Kabuki Klash is
a general Tengai Makyo themed game with Samurai Spirits/Showdown styled
gameplay. It is ironic that the english name of this game is Kabuki Klash,
since it is not Kabuki centric(while Itouryoden IS), and the real main
character is Manji Maru.
GAMES: SYSTEM: GAMEPLAY:
Tengai Makyo: Ziria PC Engine CD2 RPG
Tengai Makyo II: Manji Maru PC Engine Super CD RPG
Tengai Makyo III: Namida Never Finished RPG
Tengai Makyo: The Apocalypse IV Sega Saturn RPG
Tengai Makyo: Fuun Kabuki Den PC Engine Super CD RPG

Tengai Makyo: Zero Super Famicom RPG
Tengai Makyo: Shin Den/Kabuki Klash Neo Geo Fighting
Tengai Makyo: Kakuto Den PC-FX FMV Fighting
Other appearences of KABUKI:
*Den Den No Den
PC Engine Super CD
A promo cd released to advertise Kabuki Den, as well as demo Bomberman
'94. It's basically Bomberman with you controlling Kabuki's.
*Saturn Bomberman
Sega Saturn
Kabuki, as well as other Tengai Makyo characters: Manji, Kinu and Manto,
are playable in the Battle Mode.
*Tengai Makyo: Zero
Super Famicom
Kabuki is walking around one of the early cities in the game.
*Tengai Makyo The Apocalypse IV
Sega Saturn
Even though the game takes place in America and features an entirely
new cast, Kabuki basically makes it in as a main character in the form
of Ace, the cowboy equivelent of Kabuki. Complete with the line:
"America, ichi no date otoko!"
A different continent couldn't keep Manto out of the game either.
(5)*TRICKS-------------------------------------------------------------

Right x 6
Left x 2

(7)*REVIEW----------------------------------------------------------
To fully appreciate KABUKI ITOURYODAN, you have to look at it in the
perspective of when it was released. At the time, animation and sound
effects in home Fighters were still limited and few games had gameplay
even comparible to the STREET FIGHTER II series. ITOURYODAN however,
excells in every way.
Aesthetically, the game is still impressive, even by today's standards.
The fighters are large and smoothely animated. Remember how the characters
in STREET FIGHTER II were shaded and detailed like those in other arcade
games like FINAL FIGHT? But Capcom went on to replace them with bland cell
shaded, yet better animated ones? Well, ITOURYODAN retains the same level
of detail but includes the increased animation. Even idle sprites bounce
buoyantly.
The backgrounds range from impressive to unreal. KIKUGOROs stage would
fit in as the backdrop for a CAPCOM VS SNK batle. GULPs stage wouldn't
seem out of place in STREET FIGHTER ZERO 3. The colors and detail are
of the level that only the PC ENGINE CD could produce in an actual game
at the time.
The Character Select screen faces were also ahead of it's time. We didn't
get to see anything come close until X-MEN VS STREET FIGHTER, and they are
still striking. Same with the Victory poses. Not only do they continue
to hold up, but the voice acting was original until the VS series arrived.
The one aspect in which ITOURYODAN is lacking graphically as a TENGAI
MAKYO game is the Cinemas, or lack thereof. The series is most famous
for it's cinematics above all else. But RED wisely chose to invest the
resources which could have been spent on Cinemas in the actual in game
animation. Since ITOURYODAN is a Fighter and not an RPG, it makes sense.
The sound is equally impressive. Although the PC ENGINE was plagued with
games using generic PSG generated sound effects, ITOURYODAN is filled
quality samples. Both the effects and in fight voices are clear, numerous
and varied. Although the music isn't as impressive as KABUKI DEN or TENGAI
MAKYO II(few games compare), it's still some of the better CD music for
a PC ENGINE game.
Its all the little details that cement ITOURYODAN not only as beautiful
Fighter, but worthy of the TENGAI MAKYO name. Fans of the series will
recoginize most of the backgrounds, the special effects, the border
around the Timer, the catch phrases and the rest of the nods to TENGAI
MAKYO. But its the overall effect when all these things come together
that gives the game that polished feel that few Fighters at the time,
or even since, bring.
You won't have to sit around waiting for each match to load either.
Although the load times aren't speedy, they're nowhere near as
ridiculous as those in other ARCADE CARD CD titles. They're comparable
to the load times in better PLAYSTATION ONE CAPCOM Fighters like STREET
FIGHTER ZERO 3. Impressive considering ITOURYODAN was released for the
PC ENGINE way back in 1995.
Now to the most important aspect of all: GAMEPLAY. Its here that
ITOURYODAN excells most. Although many games have emulated the special
moves of the STREET FIGHTER II series, few have managed to capture the
proper collision, combo chaining, control, etc. ITOURYODAN however,
nails the STREET FIGHTER II gameplay so well, it could've been released
by CAPCOM and even the most diehard fans would've embraced it.
No special move is useless, just the opposite. In fact every single
move from Jabs to Roundhouses has a place in the deeply intricate
gameplay. Yet ITOUYODAN is so intuitive that a seasoned Street Fighter
can pick up a 6 button Pad and begin setting up chains and combos
immediately. And the game goes on to reward dedicated players who
stick with it and continue to unlock more and more combo patterns.
The Desperation Attacks are superior to SUPER STREET FIGHTER II TURBO's
Super Moves. As much as they add to the gameplay without interupting
the flow, the best part is that they can't be performed until a fighter
is near death. This helps prolonge matches and even out handicaps that
arise between Players of different levels of skill, or characters with
advantages over others.
Finally, there are enough characters to choose. No more, no less. Most
importantly, EVERY characters is useful AND fun. There aren't any lame
ducks that go unused because they aren't useful against many other
characters. You'll have fun playing against your friends for hours and
will come back for more later. And isn't that the most important part
of any game?
KABUKI ITOURYODAN is by far the highest quality ARCADE CARD CD game.
Arguably, the only title to truly make proper use of the extra RAM.
Whether you're looking to buy your first ACD game, a quality PC ENGINE
Fighter, are curious about TENGAI MAKYO, or just plain enjoy great games,
-don't pass up a chance to purchase KABUKI ITOURYODAN. You'll very happy
you bought it.
(8)*DID YOU KNOW?---------------------------------------------------
-the game's developer RED is responsible for other great titles
such as PC GENJIN(BONK)s, LORDS/WINDS & GATE OF THUNDER and more
recently -SAKURA WARSs and THOUSAND ARMS.
-in KABUKI DEN, each of the major Boss characters have a singing musical
opening cinema. And the music for GULP's stage in ITOURYODAN is a remix
of his musical in KABUKI DEN.
-KABUKI's famous line, "Jipang, ichi no date otoko!", roughly translates
to "Japans number one man!".
-in KABUKI DEN, OKUNI has the ability to SUMMON spirits in battle. But
she doesn't obtain the power of the Wolf Spirit until near the end of
the game.
-in TENGAI MAKYO II, MIKOSHI and the MOMOCHI SANDAYUU warriors
consistently show up to save MANJI and his party(often including KABUKI)
whenever they REALLY get into trouble. And in KABUKI DEN, while KABUKI
is still in Jipang, whenever he falls in battle he is brought back to
Kyoto by MATSURI, -MIKOSHI's comrade.
-in TENGAI MAKYO II, MANJI and his party use a Clay Robo Bear Mech,
incorporating the same technology as JINGORO, to traverse Lava and other
obstacles.
-in each game that MANTO reappears, he has a different symbol on his
forehead, including: 2, R, X, A and a Crown(for 'King').
-in THE APOCALYPSE IV, KING MANTO, aka 'The King Of Lake Tahoe' is a
black & white film star appearing in a series of King Kong like movies.
His plans for domination of America include politics and a giant KING
MANTO Mech.
-in TENGAI MAKYO II, the password to turn off the barrier of a dungeon
where KIKUGORO is holding someone prisoner is "KIUKUGOROU ERAI", -his
catch phrase, which roughly translates to: "KIKUGORO is superior".
-in KABUKI DEN, when KABUKI and ZEAMI arrive in London after sailing
on a ship from Japan, they find that everyone there speaks English!
Both the text and voice when you first arrive in London is in English,
-until ZEAMI casts a spell so that everything they here is in Japanese.
-FUJI YAMA is a world famous Sumo Wrestling champion. In KABUKI DEN,
he is in London on a world wrestling tour.
-in the background of GULP's stage is the Tower Of London. His fortress
in the centre of the country.
