Introduction
------------
Hello, and welcome to my FAQ for Wings 2: Aces High! As always, this is the
Blade, your host to FAQs of various game genres. This game (I assume it is
the sequel to something, if you know, e-mail me) was released by Namco in
1992, when the SNES was probably in its early heyday. While it is not the
best fighter simulation ever created by far, it was a pretty good one for the
Super Nintendo at the time. This walkthrough will take you through the basics
for playing, give you some tips for each stage, give you codes for each stage,
and even give you some factual information about what you will see. So,
without further ado:
Before You Begin
----------------
from Nintendo Power, vol. 39 review of Wings 2: Aces High:
" Manfred Von Richthofen, a.k.a. The Red Baron, was the most celebrated ace of
the Great War. Between May of 1915 and April of 1918, the notorious Baron
downed 80 enemy planes - more than any other ace. When the Baron was finally
shot down behind British lines, the R.A.F. accorded him a burial with full
military honors."
Wings 2: Aces High takes place during World War 1. You play the role of 5
fighter pilots in a squadron, taking on several missions in order to turn the
tide of the war. While the first few missions will introduce you to the game,
in the end you will take on the Red Baron, one of the greatest aces of the
war, in several aeriel skirmishes.
1) Controls
Your controls are as follows:
- control pad - moves plane; choose a selection
- start - starts game; confirm a selection
- select - no use
- A - opens throttle (speed up); confirm a selection
- B - closes throttle (slow down)
- X - no use
- Y - shoot
- L - moves your plane a little to the left
- R - moves your plane a little to the right
2) Fighter Pilots
Your fighter pilots are as follows:
- Marcel LeBlanc - A Canadian whos flies for the R.A.F. (Royal Air Force).
His talent is shooting.
- Sean Maloney - An Irishman who started as a mechanic.
- John Hargreaves - A factory worker from Manchester.
- Charlie Dexter - An American in the R.A.F. who has a talent for flying.
- Lawrence Wolfe - A West End socialite whose specialty is guns.
3) Records Screen
Each pilot has a records screen. On this screen, you will see several
statistics. These are:
- flying - determines maneuverability; increase to make tighter turns
- shooting - affects accuracy and range
- mechanics- the performance of your plane and guns increase with this
- stamina - the higher this is, the longer your plane can stay in the air
Each of these stats can be increased after each mission as you earn points
during missions. These points are earned by passing missions successfully,
and in the case of dogfights, downing the enemy planes as quickly as possible.
This will make you stronger, but you will lose these points if your pilot is
shot down. Also, if you do well, your pilot will go up in rank (starting at
2nd Lieutenant), but failing missions will get you demoted or, in the worst
case, earn you a dishonorable discharge. The best way to power up your pilot
is probably by leveling them up evenly in all categories, but this is up to
you.
4) Planes
Each of your pilots flies a Sopwith Camel. According to Nintendo Power, this
plane was responsible for the more victories than any other plane in the war,
and even shot down the Red Baron. Named for a hump located between its guns
(known as Lewis guns), it is known for superior maneuverability.
Your enemies will be flying the Folker D.VII. It was better than Allied
planes in that it could climb higher and faster, but was heavier. You will
come across many of these in many colors, including black ones that belong to
the Red Baron's Flying Circus, and will come across the Red Baron's red one at
the end.
5) Types of Missions
These are the three types of missions that you will engage in:
- dogfights - This is an all-out aerial battle with the various aces that
the enemy has. You must follow them, avoid getting shot, and
shoot them down yourself. If you cannot shoot them down, they
will eventually leave. You will pass the mission, but will
not get any points.
- bombing - In this, you fly in an overhead view. You must avoid ground
fire and bomb a target that you will be shown in a photograph.
In one special mission, you will take your own photograph.
- strafing - Ugh... I hate these. Your objective will be to fly in a
relatively straight line, destroying targets that you will
be told about beforehand.
6) Maneuvering
A big part of the game are the dogfights that you must engage in. In order to
be able to shoot down your enemies, especially in the later rounds, you will
have to know how to maneuver. Following are some tips on maneuvering:
- Your best bet is to get above and behind the enemy plane. Once there,
follow him as best you can, and once you get a shot off that hits him,
keep shooting.
- If you find yourself flying straight for the enemy, feel free to get off
a few shots, but get out of the way as soon as you can. Crashing into a
plane WILL kill you.
- Raise your stats to make maneuvering easier.
- making tight turns - The fastest way to turn is to fly at a ninety degree
angle and press down. You will turn fast, but be careful not to crash
into the ground - and don't overshoot the enemy!
- In battles with three planes, go after the grouping of two planes.
- In strafing missions, using the L and R buttons will be to your
advantage. Using the control pad will throw you off target. Also, most
targets are located near the river.
- the split S - This is a difficult maneuver to pull off, but it will allow
you to turn around fast. To do it, open your throttle, dive, and when
you're going as fast as you can, pull up. You will turn upside down, so
quickly roll. While this may be helpful, it has a danger in that you can
stall your motor and spin out. Be careful, for enemy planes can do this
too.
7) After Each Mission
After each mission you will be debriefed. This is what you will see:
- pilot - the name of your pilot
- mission rating - tells you one if your mission was successful, a failure,
or fatal
- enemies destroyed - how many enemies or targets you destroyed
- plane damaged - how much damage your plane took
The next screen will allow you to power up the pilot you just used. These
points can vary depending on several factors, including how fast you shot
down a plane. Make sure you distribute your points as you need them.
After this, you will be ready to choose an option. You can go to the ready
room to start your next mission, go to the barracks to choose another pilot,
or you can go to review your records which shows you each pilot's stats. In
addition, at the bottom of the screen you will find your password, which will
start you back where you are with your current pilots and records.
8) Radar
In keeping with the WW1 theme, you do not have a radar in your dogfights.
However, if you are having difficulties, you can enable a radar. Go to the
title screen, then push L, R and up on the control pad.
Missions
--------
In this section I will list information on all 20 missions, and will give
advice on each one.
- mission 1 - dogfighting - One plane directly in front of you, moving
slowly. An easy kill.
- mission 2 - bombing - You must blow up a munitions factory. Just pay
attention to the photograph and you'll do fine.
- mission 3 - strafing - You must blow up a truck crossing the river. It
is located on a bridge a little ways ahead, so pay attention.
- mission 4 - dogfight - One plane comes directly at you, so be ready to
evade. Other than that, not too difficult.
- mission 5 - dogfight - This is your first dogfight with more than one
enemy. They will appear below you, headed the other way,
so turn around and follow.
- mission 6 - bombing - You must blow up a bridge. Follow the river.
- mission 7 - dogfight - Your two enemies appear below and in front of you.
Perfect for a sneak attack!
- mission 8 - strafing - Blow up two tanks. The first one is on the right,
the second one is on the left.
- mission 9 - dogfight - Three planes! Nothing special.
- mission 10 - bombing - Here you have to destroy some oil tanks at an oil
refinery. Stay on the left of the screen. You have to
destroy two of the tanks to advance.
dogfight - Surprise! This is the first mission where you
will have another task after your first one. In this case,
you will have to fight some enemy planes.
- mission 11 - dogfight - You have two enemy planes in this one that you
will have to turn around to fight.
- mission 12 - strafing - You have six bunkers to take out in this one. Be
careful, numbers 3 and 4 are very close and on opposite
sides of the river. Not all the bunkers have to be shot.
dogfight - Two planes here will try to take you out after
the strafing mission. Take them out instead.
- mission 13 - dogfight - There is only one plane here, but he's on your
tail, so turn around.
- mission 14 - bombing - You must bomb 2 hangers. Stay on the right side
of the river.
dogfight - Three planes attack you after your bombing run.
- mission 15 - dogfight - Three enemies here. Be careful, the light blue
one will try to stay on you.
- mission 16 - strafing - Your mission here is to destroy some tanks. There
are a few (six or seven), but you just have to destroy a
few.
dogfight - Another skirmish with three enemy planes awaits
you after you destroy the tanks.
- mission 17 - dogfight - Another three-plane battle. One of the light blue
planes will do its best to evade you.
- mission 18 - dogfight - Three planes here, including a black one! And
they are on your tail! Evade, and shoot them down.
- mission 19 - bombing - You must take out enemy H.Q. It is on the left
side of the river, where there is a building that looks like
an upside-down L.
dogfight - Three planes try to take you out after taking
out their headquarters.
- mission 20 - This is the one you have been preparing for. It consists of
six different missions. Each one is not too difficult by
itself, but you will have to do the whole thing again if you
get shot down. Here is how the final mission breaks down:
1) dogfight - Three planes attack you. Watch out for the
red plane.
2) bombing - Actually, in this mission you will be using the
bombing buttons to take a picture of a factory. The stage
will end automatically when you take its picture.
3) dogfight - Three planes appear behind you. Be careful not
to crash into one. One of these is a black plane.
4) bombing - You must now destroy the factory that you took
a picture of. It couldn't be any simpler. Just blow up
the building that you took a picture of earlier.
5) dogfight - Three planes, two of which are black, come
after you here. Use all your talent to dog them down,
because the black ones display some truly impressive
maneuvers. They don't call them the Flying Circus for
nothing...
6) dogfight - Two black planes come after you at first, and
then... the Red Baron! Make your shots count, and watch
out for the Baron, he's good.
Codes
-----
This game does use a password system in case you lose at some point in the
game. The password can be found on the "please choose an option" screen after
every mission. Each code will record your mission, which pilots you have, and
their power levels. The following codes will get you to certain points in the
game, with varying power levels. I obtained the first two myself, while 4
through 20 were obtained from Nintendo Power's Top Secret Passwords Player's
Guide. It may help to write these out yourself.
