Tales of Phantasia, DeJap Translation 1.1u
zSNES Save State Item Hacking Guide
Version 1.4b
============================================================================
Greetings people! I'm back with yet another hacking guide. For those of
you not familiar with my works, I've also done a hacking guide for Castle
of the Winds for the PC, as well as help with a trick for FF5 for the SNES.
Tales of Phantasia gets my vote as one of the best RPGs ever, and for those
of you who've played this game, I'm sure you could agree. However, we never
got to see the SNES version released to the US shores. Those in the
emulation community have been clamoring for a translation, and DeJap is one
of those who have done so to completion (or as close to it as you can get).
They have done a truely remarkable job on it, and I take this moment to
praise the DeJap team on a job well done.
Now for the reason behind this guide. I had noticed that, when playing the
game, I would occasionally recieve items that I should not have recieved.
Also, some of my items vanished. I'm not certain at all why this occurs, but
after recieving a blank spot with Book of Seals in it, and unable to equip
or discard any of it, I decided that it was high time I found a way to fix
the stupid quirk manually. I pass this knowledge on to you, so that if you
run into a similar quirk, or simply want to outfit your party with the best,
you may now do so. But I really do reccomend you don't make it too easy on
yourself. This game is best enjoyed as a challenge, and I personally hope
that you only use this guide as a repair tool, not as a cheating tool.
Update: Recent versions of the patch have fixed this bug. So this guide is
now used pretty much for cheating and experiments. :)

What's New:
v1.4 - Removed e-mail contact information. To contact me about this FAQ,
please visit my website and click on "Feedback" to see what my current
e-mail address is. Hopefully, using this method, I no longer have to
update this FAQ every time a mail server stops offering services or I
switch ISPs.
I'd been reciving mails on and off about the guide, but I've recived a TON
of information and alterations needed to be added, thanks muchly to
Tempest Stormwind, in one e-mail and I'd be a silly git not to take
advantage of the plethora of information and write an update.
Combo Counter, Basilisk Egg, Guiness, Sake - So that's what it does!
Combo Command - Might be able to use this with a Demon's Seal?
Oden - Learned that you can get a full stock, with patience.
Resist Ring, Protect Ring, Force Ring, Deflect Ring - Corrected.
Excalibur - It's DARK elemental? Go figure.
All Rings - They now have their abilities and contracts.
This advice is given by Tempest about the Nymph Ring:
"Equip them in the burning tower and you won't be hurt in superhot rooms and
fire spells do no damage (both of which make you next to invincible in that
tower... equip Cless with Gale Shield and Chester with the Wave Spread to
fully see the extent of invulnerability!). To normally get them, fight on
the first floor of the tower and Rune Bottle the Salamander Rings you get."
And this:
"The Lucky Sword and the Destroyer both have a critical hit rate higher than
any other weapon. The Lucky Blade does it by raising luck, and the Destroyer
will get them as long as Cless has TP to spend. The latter isn't really
worth it, as the Laser Blade is much more reliable at that point."
And for convienence, the ingredients for Oden:
-Radish- (Euclid), -Seaweed- (Venicia), -Egg- (Olive Village, man near
north exit), -Miso- (Japon, the Ninja town in the Treant's forest), and
-Pudding- (also there). You also need a -Soup Pot- (attainable in a hidden
treasure area near the old site of Harmel, or in the colluseum after the 5th
or so round through).
Check any of the FAQs on gamefaqs.com for more details.

How to Use This Guide:
This guide is formatted for 76-character lines. A maximised Notepad in
640 x 480 resolution should display it properly.
============================================================================
A Request from Me:
This guide is not a free pass to badger me. If you want the translation, you
can go to either www.zophar.net or dejap.zsnes.com and download it there.
But do not ask me for any roms, or where to find roms, no matter how badly
you need them. Also, do not ask me for game play help. I haven't really been
able to find the time to play the game, and even if I could help you, I
wouldn't. There are TONS of FAQs available on the web. So go look for some.
Chances are you'll find them at the same place you've found this one.
Also, don't ask me how to hex-edit. That knowledge is required prior to
using this guide. And don't ask me to hex-edit it for you. I won't. I
suggest you use AXE for it, but whatever hex editor you're comfortable with
will be fine.
By the way, this is intended for the SNES version, not the Playstation
version. I don't even have a Playstation, and don't intend to get one, so
don't ask me anything at all about the PSX Phantasia.
Oh, and stop asking me for Castle of the Winds, too. It's really annoying.
You CAN e-mail me if you find an error in my guide (I try to be perfect, but
hey, I'm only half human). Or if you have a suggestion for the guide. No,
I won't do a gameplay guide. I doubt I'm any good at them.
============================================================================
Availability on the Web:
This guide may be used freely on the following web site(s):
www.gamefaqs.com
This guide may not be used on ANY other web site, and I will probably not
grant permission to allow it to be done. Why? Because if I update it, I
don't want to have to search out every single old copy of it to fix it. That
wastes my time. Any other site that does have it is probably using an old
and outdated copy.
============================================================================
Legal Crap:
Simply put, you may not use, publish, edit, alter, or publish any edits or
alterations in any format, for profit or non-profit purposes, without my
written permission. This guide is freeware, and no part of it may be used in
any formats (written or electronic) in any media that requires a purchase,
even if you gain no profit from that purchase. In laymen's terms...don't try
and copy my work, then try and sell it, claiming it as your own.
This guide was created using DeJap's Tales of Phantasia translation, version
1.1, uppercase version. It was also created using zSNES for Windows v1.17.
If your version is different, this guide may or may not apply (but it
probably will, unless the memory addresses or save state format changes).
Before we begin, back up your save state. Wouldn't want to screw it up
and have to start all over again, would you?
Phantasia separates your item list into two parts: Item Type, and Item
Quantity. It places these in two separate areas. Here is the starting memory
address for each:
957C - Item Type
96BC - Item Quantity
That's the first item slot in your pack. You have 319 of them (you would
have 320, but the "End" takes up a slot on the page).
Each byte is one item, with the value determing either the item (type) or
how much of one you have (quantity). NOTE! Phantasia handles quantity in
an odd manner. You can NEVER have more than 15 of an item. If you place an
entry that's greater than 15, it loops around. Then, when you run out of
the item, you have an empty space with quantity 0, but when you move the
cursor over it, you find the item is still there. You can't sell it, remove
it, or equip it. It's just there to annoy the hell out of you. (See why I
made this guide?) There is one exception, which you'll see below.
By the way, important note. Whenever an item breaks, you will see a burst
of blue bits in the air. Be watchful for that when using items that break,
like Protect Ring and Reverse Doll!
Now for a list of all the items in the game. Whee, won't this be fun?

such as FF, were completely bugged (screwed up the game when I tried to load
the item menu). We will assume that this is the end of the list. Which makes
a grande total of 318 items, including the blank space.
Not many of these items are mysterious to me anymore, thanks to some help.
Some of these items still seem to be little more than curiosities or quest
items. At least the list is fleshed out a bit more.
At any rate. There you have it! A complete listing of ALL the items in the
game! I could be a nice guy and make a breakdown of the best items only for
you, but I'm not a nice guy. ;) Hey, I listed 318 items for you, what more
do you want?! :P But I will mention some of the fun/useful items.
5A - Persian Boots. Whee, big cat feet. Make a fashion statement!
5E - Mah Jong Tile. Anyone up for a game? *clunk*
65 - Combo Command. I bet this could be a lot of fun if I knew all the
controller movements for all the skills. You might be able to use this
in combination with the Demon Seal and still be able to use your skills
0E - Scout Orb. Ever run into the problem where a game is less fun because
/81 of all the fraggin' monsters? It's nice to be able to edit the
difficulty on the fly. Unfortunately, it's buried rather deeply in the
Moria Gallery...you might want to throw morals out and hack this in.
10 - Lipstick. Imagining Mint and Arche flirting with the shopkeepers
/81 somehow gets me into a giggling fit. Klarth: "Hey Arche, wanna buy
something?" :)
12 - Drum Set. Actually...no, this was pretty lame.
/81
2E - Combo Counter. More fun in the Colleseum.
/81
3B - Namco Gamer. Don't you just love a shameless plug that doubles as one
/81 of the most powerful weapons in the game? :)
3C - Oden. With some effort, you can get a full stock of this, and it even
/81 makes for a solid profit when sold.
32 - Yellow Cake. Two words... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :)
/81
And...finally...
AC - Porno Magazine. Of course. :)

Finishing notes
Well, that should be about it. Considering I've got EVERY item in the game
on this list (to my knowledge), I shouldn't need to edit it further. But if
you can fill me in on some of the items I don't know about, that'd be handy.
If any other Accessories break when used, and it's not listed, let me know
and I'll fix that on my next (infrequent) update.
I should mention that many of the accessories have other abilities, like
stat boosts, which I didn't document. A good FAQ could probably detail that
better, and it's unlikely I'll make a comprehensive list unless I get a lot
of requests.
Anyway, that's our show, thanks for watching. I hope ya'll enjoyed. If you
have words of praise and worship for me, feel free to pass them along. ;)
