1) Intro/Notes/Version History
_______________________________________________________________
This is a game I first played in the arcade. I got hooked so I bought it for
the SNES. It has a great two-player option and is very fun to play. I still
enjoy playing it today, five years after I first played and eight after it was
released.
The gameplay is a simple side-scrolling shoot 'em up. There are four characters
to choose from, there are two different styles.
The game is set over eight levels and there is a boss for every level.
There are a few different level styles and a mini-game is also thrown in.
Version History:
Version 1.1
Added an extra strategy for the final boss. Given to me by Jason Lee Horner
Version 1.0
Everyting is new. Contains a full walkthrough and tips. Info on the power-ups
in the game.

4) Character Synopsis
_______________________________________________________________
There are four selectable characters, however there are only two styles.
Steve:
Steve is the hero of the story and the leader of the foursome.
His weapon is a Revolver. It shoots a single bullet at a time. He has the speed
advantage over the other two as he can shoot seemingly endless suplies of
bullets if you keep tapping the Shoot button. When he gets the Two-gun powerup
one gun is pointed straight ahead and the other at 45 degrees. This can come in
handy in some sticky situations.
Steve has green clothes.
Billy:
Billy uses the same weapon as Steve, a revolver. The two have the same style
and attacks.
Billy wears blue clothes.
Bob:
Bob has a different style to the above pair. He uses a shotgun. The shotgun
fires three bullets at a time which spread. It is much slower than the
revolver, however it more than compensates for this with its awsome power and
bullet spread. When he gets the Two-gun power up both shotguns are facing
forward, but the bullets spread to cover the screen ahead. I prefer the Shotgun
to the pistol.
Bob wears yellow clothes.
Cormano:
Cormano is the latino, poncho wearing cowboy. Like Bob he uses a shotgun.
Cormano wears pink clothes

5) Power-Ups & Bonuses
_______________________________________________________________
First I'll start with the gun power-ups. These make your weapon stronger,
faster and fire more bullets.
Silver Star:
You'll know these because they're a star that's silver and have a picture of
two shotguns on them.
This gives you the neat little advantage of being able to carry and fire two
guns at once.
If you are playing as Steve or Billy then your second revolver will be pointed
at 45 degrees, while your first gun will still point forward. This is
particularly useful when in sticky situations, such as the boss Paco Loco.
If you are playing as Bob or Cormano both of your guns will point straight
ahead. This is not a problem however as the bullets from the guns will spread
and cover a wide area.
The Silver Star power-up works best on the revolver.
Gold Star:
You'll know these because they're a star that's gold and have a picture of a
revolver on them.
This will make your bullets, bigger, pink and will also allow you to fire
quicker. When you get this all you have to do is hold down the fire button to
fire of constant rounds, rather than having to tap the button.
This will turn the revolver into a machinegun, pretty cool.
The power-up works best on the shotgun as it will allow you to get off much
more shots.
Note:
You will lose all power-ups when you are killed by the enemy.
Now for the bonuses
Chicken:
This will give you $1,000, nice.
Gold:
This will give you $2,000, even nicer.
Golden Heart:
This will give you an extra life.
Stars:
If your gun is already powered-up then betting one of the stars will give you
$2,000.
Extra lives:
When you get to $50,000 you'll get an extra life. This is also the case with
$100,000,$250,000 and $500,000.
Note: You get $100 for killing an enemy,$200 for killing him with anything
other than a gunshot,eg. a falling barrel. You also get $10 for every shot on a
boss. You will not get any points for a kill by one enemy on another,eg. an
enemy throws a bomb which takes out another enemy.
_______________________________________________________________
6) Enemy list and synopsis
_______________________________________________________________
There are quite a few different types of enemy in Sunset Riders. They can be
identified by the clothes that they wear.
Green Clothed Bandits:
These are the grunts of the game. They are the most common enemy on every stage
but they are not the easiest enemy to kill. They often pop out of
ballels, windows and doors to shoot at you.
Bright Red Clothed Bandits:
These guys are pretty hard, probably the hardest of all the normal enemies. They
throw bombs ard dynamite at you. The bombs explode on impact and have a large
blast radius. The dynamite will take a while to expplode and you can tell if it
is near to explosion because a '!' will appear above it. The dynamity can be
picked up,by walking in to it, and thrown by pressing the fire button.
Dark Red Clothed Bandits:
These are simillar to the green bandits. There are two differences between the
two. The dark red banditshave to run to a certain position before they fire and
their bullets travel much quicker than their green co-horts. These enemies are
much easier to take out than the above two.
Purple Clothed Bandits:
Another groub of bandits. These guys don't fire any weapons, instead they get
close to you and stab you with a knife. Very easy to take out from long range.
Fat Bandits:
These are the guys who carry sacks behind them. The easiest of all enemies to
kill, they don't even attack you. If you kill them they will drop a gold star
for you.
Bosses:
These are tougher enemies found at the end of every stage. They will take quite
a few bullets to kill and will often have a lot of bodyguards to protect them.
There is a prize of a lot of money for defeating a boss.

7) Walkthrough
_______________________________________________________________
Now on that we have the boring stuff out of the way,on with the game.
REWARD
$10,00
Simon Greedwell
-Dead or Alive-
Being the first level this isn't very hard. Start by walking forward until
three boxes block your path, press up and you'll get a silver star. Jump up to
the level above and press up again, this time you'll get a gold star.
Now you're fully equipped to kill the bad guys and save the gal. Continue until
you see some chickens running. This means that there will be a cattle stampeed.
Jump up to the roof and wait for them to pass. When they do proceed forward
again. After a short while there will be more chickens running for their lives
and another stampeed. But this time you'll have to run along their backs, just
leap up on top of them and run. Be careful because there are two gaps between
them and if you fall you could die!
When the last of the cattle has gone it's time to face your first boss.
Simon Greedwell
First take out the two enemies on the ground floor of Greedwell's hideout. Next
aim for the barrels. Make sure to jump and slide to avoid the bullets from your
foes' weapons. Be careful when the barrels fall because if they hit you then
you're a gonner.
Once the barrels tumble you have a clean shot on old Greedwell himself. After
you pump a few rounds of lead in to Greedwell he will start to flash
red, indicating his death is near. When Greedwell falls to the ground his last
request is to bury him with his money. Fat Chance. Pick up your $10,000 and
ride on to the next level, literaly.
REWARD
$20,00
Hawk-Eye Hank Hatfield
-Dead or Alive-
This level is quite different, it is entirely on hoeseback(except for the
boss). There are no bonuses or power-ups on this level so you'll have to do
with whatyou kept from the previous stage. This level is fairly easy actually.
All you have to worry about are the enemies dropping logs from the back of the
caravans. Just jump over these. Soon a train will appear beside you. Enemies
pop out all over this train. Just be cautious and blast them when they appear.
there are only a few enemies on the train so you will quickly approach
Hawk-Eye.
Hawk-Eye Hank Hatfield
Hawk-Eye is a real yellow-belly. He is almost constantly ducking behind crates
on the train track and letting his henchmen do the dirty work. When he does pop
his head up,shoot him as many times as possible. As always dodge the
opposition's fire by jumping and sliding. when you have put enough bullets in
to Hawk-Eye he'll drop down to the same level as you. When he does watch for
his fire, put a few more bullets in to him and he'll slump over, dead.
Now it's time for a cool mini-game. The object here is to shoot the enemie that
pop up in the different directions, either l,ul,u,ur,r,dr,d or dl. There are 50
enemies in total and $300 for killing each enemy, if you manage to get all 50
then you'll get a whopping $30,000!
REWARD
$30,00
Dark Horse
-Dead or Alive-
This level is quite similar to the first,as it takes place in a town. However
it is much harder than the first level(still not very hard). There are much
more hazards to avoid and guys to kill here. There are quite a few gold piles
on nthis level-three I think. But there aren't many stars only one of each.
Dome havards to look out for are the falling lanterns and the guy who starts a
fire alon the ground,to avoid it you will have to swing along a rope and at the
same time kill some enemies. The enemies pop out of windows and also barrels on
the ground. The level is the longest yet and the boss can also be a challenge.
Dark Horse
This guy is on horse-back(Duh!). Because of his hoarse it is impossible to stay
on the ground as the horse will kill you if it runs over you. Jump up to the
balcony above and shoot down at Dark Horse. You'll also have to avoid the fire
from the enemies who shoot out of the three windows on the balcony. When Dark
Horse enters the screen he'll shoot three bullets at you in one go(what is it
with this game and the number three?). After Dark Horse shoots at you it is a
perfect time to counterattack and hit him with as many shots as you can. He
shouldn't take long to die.
When he does you'll see a girl come out of the tavern and ask for help. As a
good cowboy of course you agree.
REWARD
$40,00
The Smith Bros
-Dead or Alive-
No level here, just straight on to the bosses. There's two of them.
The Smith Bros
These are the first very hard bosses in the game. The guy on the left throws
bombs and if you are caught in the quite large explosion then you'll die. While
the one on the right uses lanterns, which are far less dangerous, they set the
ground where they land on fire. Hovever the fire from the lanterns lasts quite
a long time. First kill the two baddies on the chandeleir. If you need it,the
gal on the bottom gives you a Gold Star power-up. To take out the bombing Smith
jump on to the chandeleir and start shootin'. When he throws a bomb get as far
away from it as you can. It is important to shoot him as much as you can while
being cautious in avoinding his bombs.
When the bro on the left is gone the other is simple. All you have to do is
hang off the chandeleir and aim up at him. Doing it this way will ensuse that
he cann't hit you(that'll show him not to mess with you).
When they are both dead the chandeleir will rise and three ladies will come out
on to the stage and put on a special dance, just for you. Now aint that sweet.
After the show they will inform you that there is a huge reward out for Sir
Richard Rose. But be careful because he always has three sidekicks with him.
REWARD
$50,00
El Greco
-Dead or Alive-
The first of which is El Greco. This level is very short. But there are many
hazards in the level. The level takes place on a train and enemies pop up from
the windows in the cariges. There are also a few guys who throw dynamite.
Most dangerous of all, there are mail posts which pass by at considerable speed
and will kill you if you get hit. They come out of nowhere so stay at the left
of the screen as much as possible and you should be ok. The posts will be
either high or low. Jump the low ones and duck or slide under the high ones.
The first and second are low while the third is high.
El Greco
This boss is more annoying than he is hard. He uses a whip and has a sheild to
block your attacks. The only way to hit him is to wait until he jumps overhead.
When he does open fire on him. As soon as El Greco lands be sure to retreat to
a safe distance away from that whip. If you are on the lowest platform and he
is on the middle platform if you duck then he cann't hit you. If you are on a
platform above him you'll have to jump to avoid his whip. Continue this
strategy and he should soon colapse and get run over by the train(Heh heh
heh!).
Now you get another chance to play that mini-game. Once again there are 50
enemies worth $300 each and a $30,000 grand prize. The only difference is that
this time the game is much harder.
REWARD
$60,00
Cheif Wigwam
-Dead or Alive-
This is the hardest stage yet. The boss at the end is also the second hardest
in the game. Start the level by jumping over the two boulders and walking up
the hill. At the top watch out for the guy throwing bombs.
Jump up and at the top of the next hill there will be two guys trying to hit
you with bombs and also a guy who is on a wooden platform and is quite hard to
hit.
At the top of the next hill there are quite a few enemies and another one that
throws bombs. When you cross the bridge be careful as there are enemies who
jump up from behind it.
Across the bridge there are more boulders tumbling down the hill. This time you
will have to jump them separately. When you arrive at the top of the hill there
will be a rope that you have to cross. While crossing the rope there will be a
few enemies on platforms trying to shoot you.
Kill them before they do the same to you. About half way across the rope there
will be an extra life,be sure to pick it up. When you get to the end of the
rope get the gold star and get ready for the boss.
Cheif Wigwam
Gulp! Cheif Wigwam is extremly hard,he uses two knifes and will slash you if
you come too close. He also uses the knifes to block your attacks when he is on
the ground. There are only two ways to attack. You can runup close and shoot
then jump back when he tries to slash you.
Alternativly you can wait until he jumps up on to those rocks of his and
shoot, you will have to be careful because he throws three knifes in your
direction. To avoid them you will have to do a few thngswhich vary depending on
the situation.
Slide under them if you are in the corner, this is the only practicul method if
you are in the opposite corner to Cheif Wigwam. Stand in between two of the
blades if Cheif Wigwam is attacking from directly above you.
You can sometimes jump the knives also and whenever possible this should be
your first choice. After a long fight Cheif Wigwan should be defeated and you
can bick up that nice little reward.
REWARD
$70,00
Paco Loco
-Dead or Alive-
The seventh level is a mix of horse riding and ground based fighting. At the
start you will be on a horse and the level is simmilar to the second level
except harder. Enemies will attack from the top and bottom more often and the
bullets are harder to avoid. There are also enemies that throw logs out of the
back of wagons. The horseback part of the level covers about half of the level
and after it is over you'll have an easy time getting to the boss.
The only things to watch out for are the enemies who throw bombs and dynamite
and also the enemies who hide behind trees and pop out to shoot you. But if you
keep a careful watch on the screen you should come through the level unscathed.
Be sure to pick up the various power-ups throughout the level as you'll need
them to take on Paco Loco.
Paco Loco
Paco Loco is slightly easier than Cheif Wigwam, but he is the third hardest boss
in the game and it will take a lot to get past him. He has a bazooka and he
will fire three bullets out of it in one direction at a time. Start by killing
the guy on the ground and then get a few shots in on Paco Loco.
Be careful because guys will pop out of the trees overhead and throw bombs down
at you. The best thing to do is to shoot them before they can drop a bomb. When
Paco fires either jump over the bullets and then shoot him or slide under them
and shoot. You will also always have to be on the lok out for the guys throwing
the bombs because they pose as big a threat as Paco Loco. Whenever there is an
opening that a bomb guy isn't there then go all out on Paco Loco. If you are
being one of the guys with a shotgun then he chould fall to his death fairly
quickly.
REWARD
$100,00
Sir Richard Rose
-Dead or Alive-
This is the big one. The toughest level and the toughest boss in the game.
There are tons of bad guys and not many power-ups. In fact there are only two
silver stars on the entire level,so try not to lose your lives as you'll need
for Sir Richard. Start by jumping over the bullets that the first three guys
fier and then shoot them. Walk forward until you see the gold star, jump up and
get it then drop back down to the lower level and get the silver star. When you
get to the rope don't go along it because this will limit you to one gun and
make you an easier target. Instead walk along the ground and be sure to watch
out for the enemies who throw bombs and dynamite. After you get to where the
rope ends it starts to get frantic as there are emenies popping up everywhere.
You will come to another rope and unfortunatly you will have to travel along it
this time, but it isn't that far and you only have to take out two enemies on
it. At the end of the rope there will be another group of enemies which include
a bomber. Kill them all and walk to the end of the screen to proceed to a new
area.
At the start of this new there will be a guy shooting at you, kill him quickly
and pick up the gold star. Now just walk and jump your way up the level. Near
the end you'll see a bomber and after him there'll be an extra life. Kill the
remaning enemies and head along the red carpet to face Sir Richard Rose.
Sir Richard Rose
This guy is the definition of a hard boss. He has tons of his goons willing to
give their lives to protect his life and you'll have to kill them all if you
want to stand any chance of killing him. There are several different tactics to
use while fighting Sir Richard.
One way to kill him is to jump up on the balcony at either side of him fire
once and jump back down, shoot as many of the enemies as you can and jump back
up again. Repeat this until the staues that protect Sir Richard crumbles. The
reason this strategy works so well is that you are invincable when jumping up
or down a level. The only drawback is that you have to be VERY fast to pull it
off.
Another tactic is to stay on the ground and take out the goons and fire at
Richard, while sliding and jumping around the bullets. This is hard to do
without loosing a few lives and is therefor not reccomended by me.
After a while the small statues that protects Sir Richard Rose will crumble
away and he is avalaible to damage. Wen this happens he will become
considerably harder. The same tactic as above of jumping up and down should be
used until all of the normal enemies are gone.
Sir Richard now has a few more attacks at his disposal to try to kill you. He
can now slide alond the ground and kill you if he touches you. He can jump up
on to all three of the balconies and shoot from there. When he is up on the
balcony he might jump from one balcony to another and shoot again. Sir Richard
Rose is very swift and hard to hit.
The best thing to do is to beat him at his own game. What I mean by this is to
jump around the balconies like and shoot when he is on the ground. When he is
on the balconies you should stick to the ground. The best time to shoot him is
when you are on the balcony. After a few minutes he should fall to the
ground,dead...
But wait! He is not dead yet! That damn B****** was wearing a bullet-proof
vest. Now you have to start again. Use the same tactics as you did before and
he should be dead in no time(this time he really IS dead). Now collect your
$100,000 and you've beaten Sunset Riders.
Jason Lee Horner gave me this strategy and thank you for it.
I have a KILLER strategy for the very first part of the Sir Richard Rose
boss fight, which I actually discovered by accident. There is a fairly safe
place to stand. You should be standing near the left side of the screen,
underneath the left balcony. As soon as you have control of your player,
move so that you are lined up with the potted rose on the left balcony and
then take one tiny step to the right. Then jump up to the top level and
immediately duck. You will need to do this fairly quickly to avoid being
hit, but if you did it right, you should be sitting on the right railing of
the balcony and rather close to Sir Richard Rose.
This may sound like suicide, but it's not. Amazingly, Sir Richard cannot
hit you from this position -- he will shoot at an angle up over your head.
Also, shots aimed at you from the entire right half of the screen will also
miss. There are only two threats to you from this position. One is a point
blank shot from a goon fired from the left balcony and the other is a shot
aimed up at you from directly underneath (diagonal shots aimed from the
ground will all miss).
The strategy is simple. Stay in the position described above and shoot
straight down (powered-up shotgun recommended). This will hit the goons
below you before they can line up a shot on you. Whenever you see a goon
appear on the left balcony, take him out with a quick shot (I found that you
can aim downward to the left to take him out), and then return to shooting
directly down. DO NOT shoot at the statue that is covering Sir Richard.
Sir Richard has about 50 henchmen. Once you wipe out all of them, no more
will appear and you will be left with only Sir Richard and 1 henchman on the
right balcony. Stay in the same position and aim diagonally to your
lower-right to hit the statue guarding Sir Richard. Since you are shooting
from point blank range, it will be destroyed quickly. When this happens,
keep your aim to your lower-right and you will score a few hits on Sir
Richard before he moves.
As soon as Sir Richard moves (he will usually drop down to the ground), aim
a shot directly to your right to take out the last henchman. Now you are
left with only Sir Richard himself. Since Sir Richard moves around a lot
and shoots from many angles, I haven't found any safe spots to stand where
you can avoid being hit.
As you said, if you and Richard are both on the ground and you are a fair
distance away from him, Richard will do a sneaky jumping slide kick to take
you out. I find that avoiding this kick is tougher than avoiding his
bullets. It's possible to jump the sliding kick, but it is hard to avoid
because it is so fast. Don't try to slide to avoid the kick either, as you
will often slide directly into Richard. Oddly enough, if you are right next
to Richard and are ducking, the sliding kick will miss. Richard cannot
perform the kick when he is on the upper (balcony) level, so as you said,
the best strategy it to stay away from him by not staying on his level. If
Richard is on the ground, you want to be on the balcony level. If Richard
jumps up to a balcony, drop to the ground.
At this point, Richard is fairly easy without his henchman around. His
bullets are fairly easy to avoid.
Try out this strategy and see if it works for you -- this makes an extremely
difficult boss fight much easier. (Note: This strategy does not work in the
arcade because you unable to sit on the railing.)
One other thing in general regarding all of the boss fights. This may seem
obvious, but I find it much easier to dodge bullets when I am aligned with
the boss horizontally or vertically -- in this position, you can often take
one or two steps to the side to dodge the bullets. When bullets are coming
at you from an angle, I find it much harder to dodge.
