1. Introduction
The purpose of this guide is to provide translations and
detailed information on 'Shin Megami Tensei if...' for the SNES.
What this guide does not include is a walkthrough; I'll leave that
to Yoshitsune. :)
Any comments, corrections and so on should be sent to
[email protected]. And yes, I'll credit you if you help out.
'Shin Megami Tensei if...' is the third Shin Megami Tensei
title released on the SNES, and can probably be considered a
gaiden. In fact, I am also told that the heroine is Tamaki in the
Persona series, so I guess that would make this game stand in the
void between Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. On the other hand, I'm
told that this game takes place in the same timeline as Shin Megami
Tensei, which is totally incompatable with Persona's. So, I'll have
to leave it to you to figure out where 'Shin Megami Tensei if...'
stands...
The gameplay of 'Shin Megami Tensei if...' differs from the
other Shin Megami Tensei games in that the majority of this game is
spent in dungeons, rather than wandering Tokyo and going through
buildings and so on. Also, this time round the hero does not have
an alignment, which makes demon summoning all that easy. On top of
that, you get a choice between having a male or female lead.
Currently, I have the Basic commands section of this guide
completed. What remains is to write about the Guardian System,
various tips and faqs, as well as to finish translating the lists.
(If you're wondering how I got those lists, I dumped them from
the ROM myself.)
Speaking of translation, I should warn you that I am not
a fluent Japanese speaker; Japanese is my fourth language, and I
am still at the beginner-intermediate level. To get the most out
of this guide, I recommend you at least learn to read Japanese.
Everything covered here is written in katakana and hiragana (the
phonetic Japanese alphabets) in both the game and the guide, so
it will be easy to get lost. You can learn katakana and hiragana
if you commit yourself to it in a matter of weeks, and there are
other advantages to it too, speaking from personal experience:
it'll help with other games, and your friends will think you're
cool. :)
At any rate, I hope you find this guide useful. And now,
a brief thanks section:
Masakado, for being omniscient,
Re-Miel, for his /amazing/ Shin Megami Tensei translations,
Fuchikoma, for pointing out my really, really stupid Cup
Killer/Cop Killer mistake,
AlanaFan, for helping translate some of the lists
and last, but not least
The Megaten Haven, for cultivating my interest in the game. :)
With that said, please enjoy the walkthough. My email address
is above should you want to send me any comments or corrections.
-satsu
Notes:
1. While I have taken the greatest care in making sure everything
is aligned properly, I cannot guarantee it will be perfect in
whatever you are viewing this in. (No, I didn't use tabs.)
2. This guide contains a lot of Japanese, so you can compare
whatever you have on the screen to what's in this guide, and so
people more advanced in Japanese can look things up quicker. All
Japanese is encoded in the Shift-JIS format. I use NJStar
Communicator to view and type Japanese text, and you can find it
at
http://www.njstar.com/.
3. I tried using naming conventions from Persona 2 when possible,
but when that wasn't available I defaulted to the conventions set
by the AGTP Shin Megami Tensei translation and Re-Miel's translations.
(See Links section.)
Failing that, I just made up my own translations if I couldn't find a
standard in either the P2 or SMT translations.
Thanks a lot to Masakado and Re-Miel for translating one of the prior
Shin Megatens, I had to refer to their work a few times... x_X

2. Basic Commands
======
=COMP=
======
Selecting the COMP command will bring up the following
commands:
These commands, in English, are:
Summon minion Dismiss minion
Return minion Automapping
Item analysis Devil Analyse
Magic analysis Autorecover
Config
The "Summon minion" command will take you to a screen showing the
demon minions you currently have in your COMP. Underneath their
names and HP/MP totals, there will be a summoning cost listed in
Makka. The amount of Makka you are currently holding is displayed
on the bottom of the screen.
The "Dismiss minion" command will remove a chosen demon minion
from your COMP. Selecting this command will take you to a screen
showing the demons you currently have and their HP/MP totals. If you
select a demon and press A, you'll be taken to a screen asking whether
or not you want to dismiss that particular minion. The choices are in
English - Yes and No.
The "Return minion" command will transfer a demon from your current
party back into your COMP. This transaction doesn't cost any Makka or
Magnetite, but be careful when returning minions because the game won't ask
you if you really want to return them. And if you've just returned your
favourite demon accidentally, you'll have to pay the summoning cost all over
again.
The "Automapping" command will show you a map based on where you have
been in the area you are currently in.
The "Item analysis" gives extended information on the items
you have, such as their effect and so on. "Magic analysis"
performs the same function, except for magic.
"Devil Analyse" will show you information on demons you've killed
or have had in your COMP. When you select this command, you'll be
prompted with the following:
しゅぞくべつにならべる 50おんべつにならべる
レベルべつにならべる ぞくせいべつにならべる
Basically, these will sort the list by race, alphabetically,
by level and by alignment. For more information on demon status,
see the next section.
"Autorecover" will completely refill the party's HP by using items
and spells, depending on how you set it up in the configuration
screen.
"Config" will take you to a screen with the following options:
バトルエッセージスピード ふつう はやい なし
オートマッピング こてい フリー
オートバトルのリピート しない モード1 モード2
アイテムまほう いれかえ オン オフ
パーティーパネル マーク ワード
サウンド モノラル ステレオ
オートリカバーでアイテム つかう つかわない
3D いどう スピード ふつう おそい
コントローラー そうさほうほう
ノーマル イージー カスタム
These are translated as follows:
Battle Message Speed Normal Fast None
Automapping Fixed Free
Autobattle Repeat Off Mode 1 Mode 2
Item/Magic Shifting On Off
Party Panel Mark Word
Sound Mono Stereo
Autorecover Uses Items On Off
3D Movement Speed Normal Slow
Controller Setup
Normal Easy Custom
A few explanations of the more cryptic options... The Automapping
option allows you to set whether or not the map rotates around
your character, or if it stays in a fixed position. Fixed is
recommended, because Free is disorientating as hell.
At the time of writing, I am unsure of the difference between Modes
1 and 2 of Autobattle Repeat. I would imagine that one mode repeats
the exact actions you did before you started autobattling, and the
other mode does the same except substitutes a regular attack for
item or magic use, like in Shin Megami Tensei.
Item/Magic Shifting is a feature that might save you a buttonpresses
if there's a spell or item that you use often. It will make the most
recently used item or spell first in the list.
Party Panel sets how the characters' status is displayed: with an
icon (mark) or with a word (ie. PALYZ).
The controller setups are as follows:
Normal
L: Automapping R: Analyse
X: All cancel Y: Autorecover
B: Cancel A: Select/Command
Sel: Unused Start: Unused
Easy
L: Select/Command R: Automapping
X: All Cancel Y: Autorecover
B: Cancel A: Select/Command
Sel: Cancel Start: Unused
The Custom screen is kind of awkward, but here are some translations.
I recommend you just leave it alone though...
Custom: Please choose the buttons you want to change.
To End: Press the same button twice.
Nothing
Automapping
Devil Analyse
Autorecover
All Cancel
Select/Command
Cancel
(Translator's note: what the hell is a コン?)
======
=ITEM=
======
On selecting ITEM, you will see the following:
つかう そうびする
ならべかえ そうびはずす
せいとん
すてる
And - you guessed it - here comes the English translation.
Use Equip
Organise Remove
Sort
Drop
Pretty self-explanatory, I think. Organise lets you manually sort your
items, whereas Sort will do it automatically.
The Equip screen looks basically the same as the status screen, so you
should refer to that section for details as to what the various stats mean.
Items that you can equip will be white; unequippable items will appear in
dull grey. When you have an equippable item selected, the relevant field
(ie. Sword, Gun, etc...) will light up. To the left of the item box are your
attributes. Later in the game, you'll get equipment that can improve your
attributes, so keep an eye on it. Also, remember that only humans can equip
items; demons have no equipment.
The Remove screen should be pretty easy to figure out. Select an item you
want to remove and hey presto, it's not equipped any more.
If both humans are incapacitated, the Item command will be unavailable.
=======
=MAGIC=
=======
Once you've selected the MAGIC command, you need to select a character to
cast the magic. Casting magic with demons is straightfoward, but if you
select your partner as the caster, you'll get a menu that looks like this:
つかう
ならべかえ
These two commands mean Use and Organise respectively. It's pretty
self-explanatory from then on.
If all magic users are incapacitated, this command is unavailable.
========
=STATUS=
========
There are two kinds of status screen in the game: human status
and demon status. The two are actually quite similiar, but
there are a couple of differences.
Only two party members will have a human status screen, namely
the hero and his partner. Here is an example status screen:
たまき
+++++++++++++++++
LV 34 + +
HP 269/269 + +
MP ---/--- + (Portrait +
EXP 70514 + and +
NEXT 886 + Guardian) +
P.A. NEUTRAL + +
+ +
GOOD +++++++++++++++++
I don't think I need to explain the concepts of levels, HP, MP
and experience, though I should mention that the hero does not
have any magical ability, and as such has no MP nor spells.
P.A. stands for Party Alignment. In the world of Shin Megami
Tensei, demons are divided up into three alignments: LAW, CHAOS
and NEUTRAL. LAW and CHAOS are diametrically opposed, so if your
P.A. is say, LAW, then you won't be able to summon CHAOS demons.
However, if your P.A. is NEUTRAL then you can summon demons of
all alignments. Easy, isn't it?
The item below P.A. is なかま (minions). You have 12 spaces in
your COMP for your demon minions, and this part tells you how
many of them you've filled up.
GOOD is what you should see when you have no status ailments. If
you do have one, however, you will see one of the following:
BAT - Character is transformed into a bat.
BIND - Character cannot move, but it wears off.
CLOSE - Character cannot use magic.
DYING/DEAD - Character is dead or on his way there.
FLY - Character is transformed into a fly.
FREEZE - Character is frozen.
GROGGY - I dunno. I found this one in the ROM.
HAPPY - Character is so happy that they may ignore
your commands.
PALYZ - Character is paralysed.
PANIC - Character becomes confused.
POISON - Character is poisoned and will lose HP as
you walk.
SLEEP - Character is asleep.
STONE - Character is turned to stone.
UNDEAD - Character becomes a member of the undead.
The bottom part of the screen will probably be the most important
to you, because you'll be seeing a lot of it. These are the
characters attributes. In order, they are:
ちから : Strength
Intelligence
Magic
Stamina
Speed
Luck
Your Strength rating affects your HP and attack power.
Your Intelligence rating will affect your MP and the effectiveness
of your magic, and it will slightly affect your hit rate and evasion
rate. It's also an important stat for Summoners (namely the hero)
because it will affect negotiations.
Magic affects the strength of your magic and your MP total.
Stamina affects your defense rating and your HP total.
Speed affects your hit rate and evasion rate, as well as when you
attack in battle and your ability to run away.
Luck affects various chances in the game, ie. the odds an enemy will
drop treasure.
When you get a level up, you get one point to add to whichever stat
you desire. Choose carefully. You will also get a certain amount
of points when you begin the game. Word of advice: don't worry about
spending too many points on Magic for the hero, as he can't use
magic.
The status screen has several offshoots - three item screens and
a more detailed status screen, as well as the Guardian status screen.
By pressing left, you can see a list of the gems you've acquired so
far. Gems serve three different purposes: demons may ask for them
during negotiations, and you can trade them in for items and
SEIREI-class demons at Rag's. The list of gems is as follows:
アメジスト アクアマリン
エメラルド オニキス
オパール ガーネット
サファイア ダイアモンド
ターコイス トパーズ
パール ルビー
In English, that would be:
Amethyst Aquamarine
Emerald Onyx
Opal Garnet
Sapphire Diamond
Turquoise Topaz
Pearl Ruby
The other item lists aren't constant like the gem lists, but they're
not really as important anyway. Pressing right will take you to the
important items list, which contains story-based items such as the
PRG Disk which contains the Demon Summoning Programme. Pressing up
will take you to a list of the regular items you've collected. Also,
pressing down on the partner's status screen will show you a list of
your partner's magic.
To get to the detailed status screen, press A at the main status
screen. The detailed status screen will show you what you currently
have equipped, as well as stats such as attack power and defense
ratings. The screen is laid out like so:
たまき
[Equipped Sword ] Sword
[Equipped Gun ]
[Equipped Helmet ] Gun
[Equipped Armour ]
[Equipped Glove ]
[Equipped Boots ]
[Equipped Bullets]
You needn't worry about the equipment on this screen, because you
can't change it here anyway. However, you may find the number under
your equipped bullets (here: XX) useful, as it tells you how many
bullets you have left.
Note that the first four stats are divided into Sword and Gun. They
are as follows:
Sword Attack Power
Hit Rate
Gun Attack Power
Hit Rate
These stats are affected by the sword and gun you have equipped, as
well as your attributes (see above).
Below the Sword and Gun stats are four more stats. They are Defence,
Evasion, Magic Power and Magic Effectiveness respectively.
Finally, the Guardian status screen. To access this screen, press X
at the main status screen. The Guardian status screen is laid out a
little like this:

Going from line to line, this screen covers the Guardian's user, its
name and level, spell list, the user's Guardian Points and the Guardian's
status. The stats are laid out in the same way as human stats.
That should cover it for human status screens. (And in case you were
wondering, たまき is the name I chose for the heroine. ^^)
Now, onto demon status screens. These only come in one screen, but
that one screen has a lot of information packed into it. Let's use
the screen for TENSHI Archangel as an example.

Don't worry, it's not as scary as it looks in ASCII. Let's start
with the left column. The first item is the demon's class and name.
In this case, it's TENSHI Archangel. Underneath that is the usual
level, HP and MP stuff you're used to. CP is a demon-only stat which
tells you how much Magnetite the demon uses when you walk around with
it in your party.
Next come the demon's spells and special attacks. Spells are written
in green, and special attacks are written in orange. You may also
notice that special attacks use up HP instead of MP, so be careful
when using them. For translations and descriptions of spells and
special attacks, see the appropriate section.
Now, the right column. For the most part, this is the same as the
human status screen, except for what I'm going to call the Alignment
Matrix. That's the thing with the letters L, N, C and D. Going in
clockwise order, the letters stand for LIGHT, CHAOS, DARK and LAW.
N stands for NEUTRAL. To the far left and right are red bars. If the
blinking marker is in one of these red bars, it means that the demon
is either Extreme LAW or Extreme CHAOS. Such demons will refuse to
enter a party with a demon of the opposite alignment until the
offending demon is returned to the COMP or booted out of the party
completely.
========
=CHANGE=
========
This is a rather simple command; all it does is re-order your party
members. Standard RPG rules apply here: People in the front row are more
likely to take damage than people in the back row.

4. The Guardian System
What's your type?
At the beginning of the game, the fortune-telling machine Nova will
ask you a set of questions which will determine what "type" your
character is. Your type will affect your starting attributes and
the guardians you can get.

5. Combat
When in combat, you'll be given four options: Fight, Talk, Escape
and Auto. Fight will take you to another menu, Talk will commence
negotiations with the demon, Escape will make the hero attempt to
run away, and Auto will start autobattle mode.
The Fight menu will then allow you to issue commands to the
characters in your party. For the hero, the available commands
are Sword, Gun, COMP, Item and Defend. The partner has pretty
much the same commands, except instead of COMP he has Magic.
Demons do not get to use items, but they have a command called
Extra and can use magic. The Extra command allows them to perform
special moves, if they have any. Demons also have the Return command,
which makes them return to the COMP. Speaking of which, the
available COMP commands in battle are:
ナカマをよぶ デビルアナライズ
..which are "Summon Minion" and "Devil Analyse" respectively.
However, there are limits to these commands. You cannot use physical
attacks from the back row, and you cannot use guns if you are out
of bullets. Demons that do not have special moves or magic cannot
use the Extra or Magic commands respectively.
For lists of magic and demon special moves, please see the lists
section of this guide.
The Talk command will initiate negotiations with the demons you
have encounter. You'll be given two choices:
ゆうこうてき いあつてき
..which are Friendly and Coercive respectively.
Unfortunately, I cannot translate the demon dialogue or give
you a failproof guide to it, because the dialogue is random,
inaccessible to me and above all, beyond my Japanese ability
for the most part.
There are several possible outcomes of demon negotiations:
1. The demon will join you.
2. The demon will join you in exchange for money, magnetite
and/or items.
3. The demon will run away after pretending to join you
in exchange for something.
4. The demon will give you money, magnetite or an item and
run away.
5. The demon will run away.
6. The demon will get mad and fight.
7. The demon will call an ally.
8. If you have the same demon in your party, the demon will
tell you to look after its friend and give you money,
magnetite or an item if you're lucky.
Demons will act strangely during a full moon. While you can
still talk to them, it is less likely that they'll act in your
favour. Also, remember that not every demon will be willing
to join you, let alone talk to you.
If the hero is incapacitated, this command is unavailable.
Also, you cannot use the Talk command when you are fighting
a boss.
The Escape command will initiate an escape attempt. However,
you cannot escape when all party members are asleep, paralysed
or inflicted with some other status affect that inhibits movement,
and you cannot escape when you have a wall behind you. If you
are successful, you will escape and move one 'block' back. If
you aren't, the enemies will have a free round. You cannot escape
from non-random battles, such as boss fights.
Selecting Auto will have your party automatically fight the enemy
until either side is dead. To get out of autobattle mode, hold the
B button.

6. The joy of fusion
Demon Fusion is an essential part of being a successful Summoner.
Throughout the game, you will find Jakyou Manors, marked as
JAKYO. As you cannot gain LIGHT or DARK demons during conversation,
you will have to fuse your NEUTRAL demons together to make them.
LIGHT demons will just ignore you when you try to talk to them,
and DARK demons will just try to kill you when you want to recruit
them.
However, you can't just fuse demons willy-nilly. You cannot fuse
demons of a higher level than the hero's level, and you cannot have
duplicate demons in your party. And no, you can't fuse the hero
or his partner with demons.
When you enter the Jakyou Manor (from here on, I'll call it Jakyo
for short), you'll be greeted by the following four options:
アクマx2がったい アクマx3がったい
そとにでる ステイタスをみる
These are:
2 Demon Fusion 3 Demon Fusion
Exit View status
"Exit" and "View status" should be self-explanatory. Selecting
either "Demon Fusion" option will take you to a screen listing
all the demons you have available to fuse. (In other words, all
your demons in good health). This screen is divided into four
columns: the first column gives each demon a number, the second
tells you what class (race) the demon is, the third gives the
demon's name, and the fourth describes what kind of result the
fusion will give. A brief guide to the symbols for the result
column:
o = Normal demon fusion. If this is blue, the demon will be LAW.
If it is red, the demon will be CHAOS. White is NEUTRAL.
x = A weaker demon of the same race as the second (or third,
if it's 3 Demon Fusion) demon will be produced.
= Fusion is not possible.
? = Random fusion.
D = Fusion will produce a DARK demon.
* = Fusion will produce a SEIREI class demon.
1 = Fusion will result in a demon of the same race, but one
rank higher.
This will only appear when fusing a demon with a SEIREI.
2 = Fusion will result in a demon of the same race, but two
ranks higher.
A word on "ranks": Each demon race has a selection of different
demons, ranked by their level. For example: the first demon
in the CHIREI race is CHIREI Brownie, the second is CHIREI
Knocker, and the third is CHIREI Kobold. If you are fusing
a CHIREI Brownie with a SEIREI, and the result column gives
you a 1, the fusion will result in a CHIREI Knocker. However,
if the column gives you a 2, the fusion will result in a
CHIREI Kobold.
There are also certain swords you can fuse, but you can only
fuse certain demons with them.

7. Getting Started/Tips for Devil Busters
Q: There's no map! What gives?
A: Unlike previous Shin Megami Tensei games, you do not have 2D map
to explore as you go between different locations. The game is
split up into several worlds, including a 'hub' connecting these
worlds. These worlds are:
The School (Not really a world, but...)
The World of Pride
The World of Gluttony
The World of Sloth
The World of Envy
The World of Greed
The World of Anger
This list is incomplete, I'll fix it later and with the Japanese
names, no less.
You have to clear the different worlds in a certain order. When
you defeat a boss, you'll get a ring which can be used in the
hub world to open up the door to the next world.
Q: What this moon display for?
A: The moon display in the top left of the screen isn't just there
to look pretty. The moon affects demons, among other things. For
example, a new moon will nullify the Mapper spell. Keep an eye
on it!
Q: What happens if I run out of magnetite?
A: All your demons die. Demons need magnetite like you and I need
oxygen. Well, not in the same way, but it's an analogy, so live with
it. (no pun intended)
Q: I used to be able to only hit one enemy, but now I can hit
multiple enemies. What's going on?
A: Weapons have a varying range of effect. Some guns will only hit
one target, while others will hit multiple enemies. The same applies
to sword-type weapons. There is no way to tell what range a weapon
has unless you try it out in battle for yourself, so beware!
Q: What difference does gender make in this game?
As far as I know, all affects is what you can equip.
Q: Who can I get as a partner?
A: There are three partners you can get:
1. Yumi. She begs you to let her join you at the start of the
game, but I'd recommend against it. Read on for the reason why.
2. Charlie. He can be found in Class 2-E, I think. The World
of Anger is only available with him as your partner.
3. Reiko. She can be found in the music room after you refuse
to let Yumi or Charlie join you. While with her you have the
same path as with Yumi, with Reiko you can go to the secret
dungeon and fight the secret last boss. And although it probably
won't mean much to you, you'll get some background information
on Hazama as well.
Q: What about the Akira guy mentioned earlier?
A: He's kind of a secret character. If you clear the game once,
you can get a different route with Akira as your partner.
Q: Help! I'm stuck in the Taidakai (World of Sloth)!
A: This is probably the most annoying part of the game, next to
the dungeons which have floors where you can't see anything and
telport you around all over the place.
Basically, what you have to do here is walk around for several
lunar cycles (keep an eye on the moon display). The reason for
this is that all the students there are being made to work as
slaves, and every lunar cycle they dig out another room. You're
going to have to wait until they dig out enough rooms for you
to be able to reach the boss and kill him.
Q: Help! The boss in the Shittokai (World of Greed) is REALLY
hard!
A: Chefei (the boss) takes on an increasingly powerful form based
on how much treasure you took. This is why this world has so
much treasure. You could just skip the treasure, kill the weak
form of Chefei, and then take it all, if you wish.
Q: What's this flaming, talking sword in the Shittokai?
A: That's Maken Hinokagutsuchi. (Try saying that 10 times fast).
You can only pull it out when you meet certain (read: hard to
meet) conditions. There are two other ways to get it: sword
fusion or exploiting a bug.
Q: What's the Data Disk item for?
A: You get this item earlier in the game, and Sato in the computer
room will offer to check it out for you. When you get out of the
Taidakai, Sato will find out what's on the disk: MAJUU Kerberos.
He'll talk to you for a bit, and challenge you if you say you want
him to join you. If you win, he'll become your minion.
I think it's possible to fuse a Kerberos, but I'm not entirely sure.
Q: Where should I focus my attributes?
A: This is a hard question to answer, because it depends on how
you play the game. If you're the kind of player who likes to
make sure that their characters are always safe from dying, it
would be a good idea to make sure they have plenty of Stamina,
which increases their HP and defense ratings. However, if you're
more of a gung-ho kill-them-first-before-they-kill-us kind of
player (read: impatient), then plenty of Strength and Speed should
do the trick, but make sure you have a moderate amount of Stamina
or you won't survive the longer battles.
And, as always, don't forget about Intelligence and luck.
Intelligence is one of the most important stats, as it affects
your reaction times, demon negotiations and how much magic your
partner can remember. Speaking of which, don't forget to keep
your partner's Magic attribute high... he knows magic, so use
it! :)
Q: What the hell? Angels aren't demons!
A: In the Shin Megami Tensei world, demon is the catch-all term
for the creatures you'll come across. Everything from the angel
Gabriel to Kerberos are demons in SMT.
Q: I've played Shin Megami Tensei, so are all the demons the
same?
A: No. Shin Megami Tensei 2 increased the amount of demons and
races, and I would assume that there has been some changes in
Shin Megami Tensei if... as well. Here is the demon race list;
a demon list may come in a future version.
The demon races are as follows:
