"This is no Tetris, boy! No Tetris!"
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" my curious friend asked as he
watched me playing SD Gundam Power Formation Puzzle. Obviously
oblivious to my parody of Ramba Ral, I decided to go for a more
sensible explanation of what the heck exactly I was playing. "Well, you
see, it's kind of like Tetris, but backwards... and with giant freakin'
robots!"
Welcome to my guide for SD Gundam Power Formation Puzzle, one of the
coolest falling block-type puzzle games you will ever play. This game
manages to take the basics of the typical block puzzle, and throw them
out on their ass. Instead of destroying blocks, you prosper from
keeping blocks. You can deploy mobile suits (giant piloted combat
robots) to defeat your enemies fleet. You can use special abilities to
attack your foe with your battleship. The matches can become so drastic
and fast-paced with mobile suits zooming, and blocks falling, and
missiles flying every which way that you won't know what hit you. Yes,
this game kicks ass!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Basics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SD Gundam Power Formation Puzzles is one of the most unique block-
dropping puzzle games you will ever play. The game pits you and your
battleship against another battleship team based after various factions
from past Gundam series and movies.
You battle by arranging colored blocks dropped from small transport
ships, arranging lines to trade in for mobile suits to try and deplete
your opponents battleship's life. But be cautious, this isn't like most
block games. Where the point in Tetris is to form lines to keep the
height of your blocks down, the point of Power Formation Puzzle is to
not destroy your lines. Get as many as possible, up to a maximum of
eight. If you have more than eight lines, Your columns will be pushed
down as new falling blocks land.
There are four basic block colors: Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green.
There is also a fifth type of block, called a Power Block, but we'll
talk about those later. You can tell what type of blocks the next three
blocks coming will be by looking at the gauge in the center of the
screen. If you see a block you want, speed up your current drop or slow
it down to trick the computer into taking the blocks before it.
Blocks will be destroyed if four or more blocks of the same color
are touching in any way, including diagonally. Blocks will also be
destroyed if one block of each color touches vertically or
horizontally.
| | |R | | Y | | GG | | |
| BBBB | |0R 00| |00 Y00| |000G00| | RYBG|
|000000| |00R000| |000Y00| |000G00| |000000|
|000000| |000R00| |000Y00| |000000| |000000|
+------+ +------+ +------+ +------+ +------+
-In the first diagram, the four blue blocks (labeled as B) would be
destroyed since they are all of the same color, and are all touching
horizontally.
-In diagram two, the four red blocks are all diagonally in a straight
line with one another, and thus all four would be destroyed.
-In the third diagram, the four yellow blocks stacked horizontally one
on top of the other would be destroyed.
-In diagram four, there are four green blocks touching, and although
they are not all in a straight line, since there is more than three
blocks of the same color touching they would all be destroyed.
-And finally, in diagram five, we see that there is one red, one
yellow, one blue, and one green block arranged in a horizontal line.
Although they are not all of the same color, since one block of each
color is touching all four would be destroyed.
If any of your blocks are destroyed, your battleship will lose a
small amount of life. Your battleship has four life gauges. The first
gauge is white in color, and as it depletes it will become blue. The
second blue gauge will then lead to the third yellow gauge, and the
fourth and final life gauge, the red gauge. If the red gauge is empty,
your battleship has lost all of its life, and it will go down in
flames. You lose!!! On the other hand, if you can get the opponent to
lose all of its life, you win! Sounds easy? Well it may, but it is
tougher than it seems sometimes, because there are plenty of wicked
tricks both you and the enemy can pull to make the match much more
interesting, to say the least.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Power Blocks and Special Abilities
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aside from the standard colored blocks, there is also a fifth type
of block, called a Power Block. These black blocks have a neon green
"P" on them, making them easily discernable from the other block types.
Power Blocks are used to trigger one of the six special abilities of
your battleship. When four or more Power Blocks are touching, they will
activate and trigger a special ability to be used.
Which column the last Power Block to activate the special ability is
placed in will determine which special ability is used. There are six
columns that make up the play area, and six abilities that can be used.
Memorize which abilities the team you are using has, and manipulate any
Power Blocks as they fall to use the abilities you want.
Here is the setup of the columns, and which abilities they would
trigger if the last Power Block to complete a group of four or more is
placed there:

Once a special ability is triggered, the used Power Blocks will
become dark, but will not be destroyed, instead remaining as junk
blocks so you can still trade in any remaining rows with junk blocks
after you use your special abilities to get a mobile suit. Nifty, huh?
But, junked Power Blocks will be destroyed if any nearby colored blocks
are destroyed, so be careful around them.
These are the various special abilities available to some of the
teams and an explanation of what they do for you or to your opponent:
--Attack: This will cause your battleship to launch an attack against
the enemies' battleship, decreasing the life of the opponent's
battleship and often destroying some of their blocks as well.
--Shield: This will cause a red force-field to go up around your
battleship so that the next attack made on it by an attacking enemy
mobile suit will do a minimum amount of damage.
--Block: This will add a line of junk Power Blocks to the bottom of
your stack, increasing the level of the stack by one.
--Repair: This will repair some of the damage already done to your
battleship. It will refill your battleship's life bar by about 25%.
--Fall: This causes your transport ship to enter the opponent's area
and drop a row of blocks on top of the opponent's stack. All of the
blocks will be of the same color, so if more than four end up touching
they will be destroyed. Power Blocks can not be dropped in this way.
--Flash: This will cause the opponent to be unaware of what type and
color the next five falling blocks are. They will all be white instead.
--D. Dash: This causes all of the blocks to be cleared from both
players areas, and will deal damage to the opponents battleship
depending on how many blocks are destroyed.
--Mine: This will fire three mines into the opponent's area, which will
fall at random and destroy any blocks they touch.
--MS At.: This will attack the most powerful mobile suit that an
opponent currently has stored in their battleship.
--TP At.: This will destroy the opponents transport ship for a few
seconds, which will stop new blocks from dropping into their area until
the effect wears off and a new transport ship appears.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Creating and Attacking with Mobile Suits
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Like I said earlier, the point of Power Formation Puzzle is to get
as many complete lines as you can. Ah, but you say: "What the hell use
is a line if all it is going to do is sit there?"
Good question! Any complete lines can be traded in for a mobile
suit, which can be used to directly attack your enemy, or be stored for
later to defend against incoming enemy mobile suit attacks.
Press the B Button to trade in all of the complete lines you
currently have, and you will put a mobile suit into storage, that way
you can use it later to attack or defend. You can call a mobile suit
out of storage to attack or defend later on down the road by pressing
the X Button. If you wish to bypass the entire storage phase, you can
just press the Y Button to trade in any complete lines you have for a
mobile suit to be sent out to attack immediately.
The more complete lines you trade in, the more powerful the mobile
suit you receive will be. There are eight mobile suit power levels, and
hence eight mobile suits for every team. When you trade in complete
lines, the lines will disappear, and any remaining blocks will be moved
to the bottom of the area. For every one line you trade, the power
level of the mobile suit you receive will be increased by one. Say you
trade in only one complete line, you will only receive a mobile suit
with a measly power level of one. But if you manage to get eight lines,
and trade in all eight complete lines, you will receive a monstrously
powerful level eight mobile suit.
You can use your mobile suits to attack your opponents' battleship.
When told to attack, a small window will open at the top of the screen
and the attacking mobile suit will begin to travel to the opponent's
battleship. During the time it takes for your attacking mobile suit to
get to the enemy battleship, the enemy can choose to launch its own
mobile suits to defend and weaken you attacker. When two mobile suits
clash they will both attack each other. The mobile suit with the
highest current power level will win the battle and continue towards
the opponent's battleship. But the power level of the victorious mobile
suit will have decreased due to the damage it has taken. After the
battle ends, the mobile suit will continue to the enemy battleship
until it is either destroyed by another defending mobile suit, or it
successfully attacks the enemy battleship. If two mobile suits of the
same power level attack each other, they will both be destroyed.
In example, let us say the Gorbeez launches a Nobel Gundam to attack
the enemy battleship. The Nobel Gundam has a power level of 6. The
enemy Zeon, not wanting their Gaw to be attacked by such a powerful
mobile suit, launch a Gouf with a power level of 4 to defend against
the Nobel Gundam. The Nobel Gundam with a power level of 6 is stronger
than the Gouf with its power level of 4, so the Gouf will be destroyed,
but the battle has damaged the Nobel Gundam. The Nobel Gundam's power
level will now be only 2, because using the power of basic subtraction
the Gouf's power level of 4 has been subtracted from the Nobel Gundam's
6 leaving us with a Level 2 Nobel Gundam. The Nobel Gundam continues on
and attacks the Gaw, but does very little damage because it is only
Level 2 now instead of Level 6.
You can only store a total of five mobile suits at a time. You can
tell how many mobile suits you or your opponent has currently stored by
looking at the sides of the screen. For every mobile suit currently
stored, a yellow bar will appear on the side of the screen. Any new
mobile suits created will be sent out to attack immediately if you can
not store anything else.
Mobile suits are a vital part of strategy. Learning when to attack,
or defend is important. Sometimes it is better to let a level one
mobile suit through instead of wasting a mobile suit to defend, and
then launching your own attack afterwards. You must also learn to
balance between trading in for weak mobile suits and strong suits. A
Level 8 suit, although god-awfully powerful, is also god-awfully hard
to make. Level 1 mobile suits are easy as hell to pump out, but are
also weaker than hell. You have to find a balance between the two,
because if you try to make nothing but super-strong mobile suits, you
will be swarmed by the enemies' weaker mobile suits. But if you make
nothing but wimpy mobile suits, they will rarely ever get a chance to
attack the enemy, much less actually do any real damage.

[==========================|Gameplay Modes|===========================]
/ \--------------/ \
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Story Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Story Mode is the basic mode of Gameplay, where you get to choose
one of three teams and battle against all of the other teams. You have
a choice between the Gundam team, G Gundam team, or the Gundam W team.
Using your team you will go through nine battles as you fight against
the evil in the universe... or something. You can loose once, but any
more and you loose story mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Versus Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a standard two-player versus mode. Grab your buddy, any
buddy, and a second controller and knock yourselves silly as any of the
ten teams in the game. The game gets a lot more hectic when you have
someone else grabbing for Power Blocks, and launching assaults.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Time Attack Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You have fifteen minutes to defeat as many enemy teams as possible
with your choice of any of the ten teams. My best is a meager four wins
in fifteen minutes. Ho hum... In this mode, enemies seem a lot more
determined to get higher block stacks and getting more powerful mobile
suits, so you don't have as much constant pressure on you like you do
in Story Mode.
