Version Dipoo!.1
-made a webpage to go with this FAQ:
http://www.angelfire.com/games2/rs3monsters/rs3monsters.htm
-added Overall Stat Comparison at the beginning of Characters section so
you can see who is "technically" the best.
-why must I be so plagued with errors and inconsistancies!?

Alright, I've tried to make this as simple and user-friendly as
possible. I've made a list of all the characters in Romancing SaGa 3 and
their stats. This should allow you to compare the heroes and see who's
good and bad at what. I've also included where to find each hero and how
to get them to join you as best I know how. However, some of the
characters just won't join you even if you do follow the right steps
because no main character can acquire every single character.
I whipped up a Town/Place Reference for any towns or areas
mentioned. This describes the place based on location and appearance.
This should help those of you who don't know Japanese. I've included a
lot of other stuff too so go to it.

This guide is divided like so:

  I. Town/Place Reference                (Find Word: Alkaiser)
II. Choosing a Character                (Find Word: Nusakan)
     a. Explanation of Stats             (Find Word: Roufas)
     b. Characters                       (Find Word: Berva)
     c. Suggested Group Combinations     (Find Word: Mesarthim)
III. Tips for Learning Techs             (Find Word: Asellus)
IV. Difficult Techs                     (Find Word: DSP)
  V. Weapon Specific Techs               (Find Word: Leonard)
 VI. Spells                              (Find Word: Rouge)
VII. Blacksmith Items                    (Find Word: Scrap)
VIII. Rare Items                          (Find Word: Dullahan)
 IX. Q & A                               (Find Word: Hamilton)

                             BAI MEI NIANG
                          "Wizard of the East"

Where: you'll meet her in the Village of Mungs and later on you can pick
her up anytime at Xuan Castle.

Specialty: Wind Magic

Strength: 17
Dexterity: 16
Speed: 14
Constitution: 17
Magic Power: 23
Will Power: 18
Charm: 8
Overall: 113
LP: 13

My Thoughts: One of the best magic attackers in the game. Since she has
13 LP she's a good candidate for the "Dragon God Descent" Wind magic.
She also seems pretty good at learning Mikiri Waza. If you want to make
a good team of magic users, she should be considered.

                              BOSTON
                             "Lobster"

Where: a lobster-man found at the Island of the Farthest. He has an
especially strong punch. There is a dragon that Boston wants you to take
care of. However, if you wait too long to kill it, Boston and his
buddies will be destroyed and you'll never see him again...plus you'll
feel really bad for killing everyone. Boston must wear Lobster Mail
which makes him immune to the water magic "Squall" and he has a
different (stronger) type of punch. You can't dump his Water Magic
either.

Specialty: Martial Arts & Water Magic

Strength: 16
Dexterity: 13
Speed: 20
Constitution: 19
Magic Power: 21
Will Power: 17
Charm: 9
Overall: 115
LP: 17

My Thoughts: I like Boston a lot. If you're like me and you hate to use
WP then Boston's regular punch is just what want. If he's placed in the
right formation and position he usually does about 2000 damage later in
the game with his plain punch. He's good with Water Magic so he can heal
when needed. However, his armor isn't the greatest and he can't do much
against slimes and gels.

                              BARD
                          "Storyteller"

Where: you'll find the Bard in various places and once he joins your
group, it is sometimes difficult to get him to leave. I'm not really
sure what makes him leave. Later in the game, the Bard will quit
offering to join you. Bard must always carry his fiddle.

Specialty: None (but he seems to use Staffs well)

Strength: 20
Dexterity: 18
Speed: 17
Constitution: 16
Magic Power: 13
Will Power: 14
Charm: 22
Overall: 120
LP: 10

My Thoughts: I've never had a problem with the Bard. He's always had
high WP, HP, and attack power when I've used him. Besides always having
to carry his fiddle, he's a solid character.

                              BLACK
                           "Ex-Pirate"

Where: kill Fuoruneus with Herman in your group. Herman will regain his
lost youth and his junky stats will be fixed. His name will be changed
to "Black" which sounds much more menacing than "Herman". Scroll down to
"Herman" for more information on how to acquire Black.

Specialty: Axe & Wind Magic

Strength: 19
Dexterity: 20
Speed: 15
Constitution: 16
Magic Power: 16
Will Power: 24
Charm: 14
Overall: 124
LP: 12

My Thoughts: Black is okay I guess. I don't really like axes since the
best techs for them are hard to learn. Black makes a good Wind Magic
user for much the same reasons as Bai Mei Niang; high LP.

                                 ELLEN
                            "Shinon Settler"

Where: Sarah's sister. You'll find her in Lance.

Specialty: Axe & Martial Arts

Strength: 21
Dexterity: 14
Speed: 18
Constitution: 15
Magic Power: 15
Will Power: 18
Charm: 20
Overall: 121
LP: 10

My Thoughts: Ellen is another solid character. She always seems to be
the character that dies the least when I use her. She always gets a lot
of WP, HP and attack power too, at least when I've used her. Her skill
in martial arts compliments her axe skills nicely.

                               FAT ROBIN
                           "Masked Defender"

Where: The Yamas bartender in disguise. Sometimes when you go into the
warehouse at the ship docks in Yamas, Fat Robin will come down instead
of the regular Robin. Read about "Robin" to get this guy. You can't have
both Robin and Fat Robin in your group at the same time.

Specialty: Small Sword

Strength: 15
Dexterity: 17
Speed: 22
Constitution: 17
Magic Power: 14
Will Power: 15
Charm: 19
Overall: 119
LP: 9

My Thoughts:  Well, he's fast. He doesn't really shine in attack power
especially since he uses small swords. He does know "Screwdriver" which
is a strong tech for as early in the game as you can get him. Fat Robin
also gets a WP discount on Small Sword and Spear waza--WP crown or not.

                               FULLBRIGHT
                               "Merchant"

Where: in the house in Pidona where Thomas and Sarah are staying there
are three rooms. Thomas is in the room on the left, Sarah in the middle,
and an empty room on the right. If you have Thomas with you, Fullbright
will sometimes be waiting in this room. Talk to him and he'll tell you
about a business proposition that he has for Thomas. If you don't know
what you're doing in this game this would be a bad time to tell him that
you're interested because then you'll get mixed up in this big money
game which is completely confusing. I've never been able to get
Fullbright to join me if I went on this money making venture. So if I
want Fullbright I simply say "No." when I am first given a choice. Then
go to the armor shop in Wilmington and talk to Fullbright and he'll ask
to join you.

Specialty: Sun Magic & Earth Magic

Strength: 15
Dexterity: 20
Speed: 16
Constitution: 13
Magic Power: 19
Will Power: 21
Charm: 14
Overall: 118
LP: 9

My Thoughts: not a good physical fighter at all. He is the only
character who specializes in Earth Magic and in addition to that, he
also specializes in Sun Magic. Later in the game when you get better
magic he can be a useful healer and attacker. If you're planning a magic
using team, definitely get him.

                                 HARID
                         "Travelling Swordsman"

Where: you'll find him at the Tomb of the Divine King in Lance. Harid is
the only character who can go to the Capital of King's--a place with
some neat, one of a kind items and music and which is also the best
place in the game to learn new techs and improve your stats. Harid must
wear a scimitar-type sword in his first weapon slot (though there are
ways around this--see "Secrets" section). He also has some trouble
getting Ward and Yuki Dharuma. For more, read about Ward.

Specialty: Sword

Strength: 21
Dexterity: 12
Speed: 20
Constitution: 17
Magic Power: 15
Will Power: 19
Charm: 20
Overall: 124
LP: 10

My Thoughts: unlike Julien, Harid is always available if you need a good
sword user. However, Harid must wear a certain type of sword in one of
his weapon slots. If he's not your main character then the strongest
sword he'll ever get for that slot will be a rather weak one and this
will keep his attack power from reaching its full potential. But, if you
use the Seven Star Sword trick then he is definately the strongest
fighter in the game. He always gets lots of WP, HP, and very high attack
power. He's the only one besides Julien that specializes in the sword,
which has some of the best techs in the game. There's just nothing wrong
with Harid--with the Seven Star Sword trick.

                               HERMAN
                             "Ex-Pirate"

Where: you'll find Herman at the resort town of Great Arch. There is a
right way and a wrong way to get Herman to join your group. The Wrong
Way: kill the Water Abyss Gate Guardian w/out Herman in your group and
then go talk to Herman and he'll join you. The Right Way: after you have
Undine's water mages working in the underground control room in Vangard
you'll have to talk to the old man in Vangard and he'll tell you that
you need a special dolphin statue to power up the control room. Go talk
to the Vangard pub owner about the statue (the third choice). He'll
freak out at first but then he'll spill the beans. Next, go to the lower
armor shop in Yamas and talk to the shopkeeper. You'll have to buy
something before he tells you what you want to know. Next, go talk to
Herman at Great Arch and he'll offer to join you and show you where the
statue is. This is how you want to get Herman in your group if you're
going to get back his lost youth. Don't get the dolphin statue without
him.

Specialty: Axe & Wind Magic

Strength: 14
Dexterity: 20
Speed: 10
Constitution: 11
Magic Power: 16
Will Power: 24
Charm: 12
Overall: 107
LP: 4

My Thoughts: Herman sucks and he is meant to suck. He's slow, he misses
a lot, and he dies a lot. The whole idea with Herman is to get his lost
youth back so that he stops sucking. If you killed the Water Abyss
Guardian without him, avoid him like the plague.

                                JULIEN
                           "Shinon Settler"

Where: If you choose Michael, you can have Julien join you anytime. When
it is time to fight Byunei, the Wind Abyss Gate Guardian, you'll be let
inside the Castle of Loanne where, if you are using Thomas, Sarah, or
Ellen, I think Julien will ask to join. (Unless you're Monica in which
case, he just won't be there.) However, after you kill Byuunei you won't
be allowed back into the castle so if you want Julien you'd better get
him and keep him then.

Specialty: Sword

Strength: 18
Dexterity: 17
Speed: 17
Constitution: 15
Magic Power: 16
Will Power: 22
Charm: 14
Overall: 119
LP: 10

My Thoughts: Julien is a well rounded guy and, in my opinion, he has the
best town music. There's not much to say about him. Think of Julien as
the Ryu or Mario of Romancing SaGa 3.

                              KATERINA
                          "Noble of Loanne"

Where: If you want Katerina in your group at all, you must choose her as
your main character. At the beginning of her quest, Katerina is tricked
into giving away the Masquerade sword and for that, she can't return to
Loanne until she has retrieved it. Once you've done this (and defeated
only 1 of the Abyss Guardians besides Byunei) take it to Loanne and talk
to Michael. Katerina should be allowed to change into her old noble's
clothes which is kinda neat. Also, at the beginning of her quest, if she
hides her equipment in the wardrobe in Monica's room and then unlocks
the jail cell door downstairs, she'll be able to escape when she is
captured. She'll meet up with Michael and Harid and you can then go get
her equipment from the wardrobe...this includes the Masquerade.

Specialty: Big Sword & Small Sword

Strength: 17
Dexterity: 21
Speed: 23
Constitution: 18
Magic Power: 10
Will Power: 16
Charm: 17
Overall: 122
LP: 10

My Thoughts: Katerina is probably my favorite. She's only playable in
her scenario, she looks neat, she's fast, she's one of only two
characters to specialize in big swords (besides Shonen) and she also
specializes in small swords. This means that she can easily use waza for
4 different weapons: sword, bigsword, spear, small sword. Her speed
makes her great with certain icy big swords and her attack power can get
quite high.

                                LEONID
                                "Count"

Where: if you chose Michael, Harid, or Katerina as your main character
then you will have to win the contest at Zweig in order to have the
location of Leonid's Castle revealed to you. Since Monica can't enter
the contest she also can't go to Leonid's Castle. With any other
character all you have to do is fight your way through Leonid's Castle
and when you make it to the end and you'll be given the Holy Grail. Then
go to Leonid's throne and he might offer to join you depending on who
you are and (I think) how many females you have in your group, not
counting Ellen. I am not sure about this but I think Leonid will only
let you into his castle if you have a female besides Ellen in your
group. I know for sure that he will offer to join Katerina, Sarah, and
Thomas. Leonid is immune to all status ailments. He also regains a
portion of lost HP every round in battle and has unlimited LP. However,
he is weak against Sun Magic, is unable to use any magic but his own
Vampire Skills, can't be healed with the usual magic, his max HP
increases very slowly, and once he falls in battle he can't be revived
until the battle is over. Leonid must always wear the Gloaming Robe and
can only be equipped with rings.

Specialty: Martial Arts & Vampire Skills

Strength: 19
Dexterity: 13
Speed: 21
Constitution: 17
Magic Power: 25
Will Power: 13
Charm: 27
Overall: 135
LP: 0

My Thoughts: as you can probably guess, Leonid is pretty good. He's
fast, his WP is very high, and his attack power is one of the highest.
His Vampire Skills can be useful if used correctly, too. "Gentle Touch"
is great for killing those extremely nasty Mysterious Dragons in Island
of the Farthest. I'm told that the robe he wears is cursed so that
certain attacks cause the wearer to take double the damage but I'm not
sure if Leonid is exempt from this because he's undead. He has to attack
something if he wants to heal himself and his HP usually doesn't go much
higher than 666. He also can't wear any armors besides his robe other
than rings. I'm told the Ring of Death compliments Leonid nicely.

                                MICHAEL
                           "Earl of Loanne"

Where: if you don't choose Michael as you main character you can only
get him at the Castle of Loanne when it is time to kill the Wind Abyss
Gate Guardian, Byunei. If you have Monica with you, Michael will freak
and make her leave your group.

Specialty: Small Sword & Sun Magic

Strength: 16
Dexterity: 17
Speed: 19
Constitution: 15
Magic Power: 18
Will Power: 21
Charm: 21
Overall: 127
LP: 10

My Thoughts: the neat thing about Michael is that if you play him as
your main character then after he finishes a military campaign he can
get two of each item that the blacksmiths were ordered to make. That
means two dragon swords, two dragon armors, two dragon shields...neat.
Otherwise, Michael doesn't really excel at fighting (unless you choose
him as your main character and mess with his stats) or at magic. He's
just supposed to be a little good in every area. As far as learning
techs, I've found him to be so-so.

                                 MONICA
"Sister of the Earl of Loanne"

Where: you'll find her at the Castle of Loanne. I know for sure that
she'll join Katerina and Julien and perhaps with Sarah. Monica cannot
enter the contest at Zweig or go to Leonid's castle if she is your main
character.

Specialty: None

Strength: 14
Dexterity: 19
Speed: 20
Constitution: 14
Magic Power: 16
Will Power: 17
Charm: 24
Overall: 124
LP: 10

My Thoughts: Monica is really meant to be played as a main character
since you can specialize her anyway you want without having her severely
suffer in any area of her stats. If you want her to be a magic user then
adjust her stats accordingly and she'll become an exceptional magic
user. If you want her to be a sword user then do the same and she'll
become a great sword user.

                                 MUSE
                         "Damsel in the Window"

Where: you'll find her in Pidona. After you have rescued the boy from
the Devil King's Castle, Muse will eventually get sick when your Max HP
gets high enough (around 250?). Talk to Sharl and when you are given a
choice, pick the second option. You'll be asked to choose the 4
characters you want to take with you into Muse's Nightmare. (if you
don't include your hero you won't get to go.) After choosing, you and
Sharl will both drink a potion and enter Muse's Nightmare. After you
finish this scenario, Muse will join you whenever you want.

Specialty: None (but she has been known to learn tough Big Sword techs)

Strength: 16
Dexterity: 20
Speed: 15
Constitution: 10
Magic Power: 19
Will Power: 18
Charm: 25
Overall: 123
LP: 6

My Thoughts: I haven't quite figured Muse out yet. I'm told that she
gets high WP and HP and she is a decent fighter. But what I don't
understand is exactly what the incentive is for taking the time to
improve her abilities because when you get her she has nothing going for
her at all: no magics and 0 on all weapon levels. I think she does
something slightly unusual in the way she attacks in commander mode...I
think she always uses magic but I can't remember. I dunno, consider her
a surprise character. Several people have told me that she tends to
learn techs quickly...

                                  NORA
                               "Engineer"

Where: go to Pidona and go into the basement of the empty armor shop.
Nora will run out. Talk to the man at the forge. Nora will come back and
you can ask her to join you. If you refuse or don't have enough room,
Nora will run off and you'll never see her again. If you let her join
you, you can later put her to work making weapons for you with the rest
of your blacksmiths.

Specialty: Staff & Axe

Strength: 23
Dexterity: 24
Speed: 16
Constitution: 12
Magic Power: 14
Will Power: 13
Charm: 13
Overall: 115
LP: 14

My Thoughts: not bad at all. She's better with axes than most because of
her high dexterity. She's powerful and she also seems to swing spears
well. She seems to learn Mikiri Waza easily too. If you decide to take
her in for the long haul that means you'll have one less blacksmith
working for you.

                                PAUL
                             "Ex-Thief"

Where: after you have defeated the thieves in the Den of the Highwaymen,
Paul will join your group at Kidland. Actually it's not entirely that
simple. Paul eventually shows up at Kidland but I'm not exactly sure
what causes him to show. Sooner or later though, he'll be there and you
can ask him to join. Kupocorey says that you must have a female, other
than Ellen in your group and should also have saved Nina from the rats.
Supposedly, if you let the Thief Captain kill you in the Den of the
Highwaymen, then Paul will come and save you, but the Ruins of Cave
Temple won't appear later. I haven't confirmed this yet, though...

Specialty: Bow

Strength: 18
Dexterity: 19
Speed: 17
Constitution: 19
Magic Power: 13
Will Power: 15
Charm: 16
Overall: 117
LP: 11

My Thoughts: Paul gets a lot of HP and WP. Come to think of it, his WP
went the second highest that I've ever seen a character's go. His attack
power also gets pretty high. If you want a bow user then Paul is your
man.

                                ROBIN
                          "Masked Defender"

Where: go to Yamas and talk to everyone. Eventually you'll see some bad
guys who are bullying the townspeople. The first time will be in a
house. The second time will be in the warehouse on the ship docks, and
the third time will be upon exiting the lower armor shop. After you have
seen all this, go to the warehouse on the ship docks again and Robin
will offer to join you.

Specialty: Small Sword & Wind Magic

Strength: 21
Dexterity: 17
Speed: 20
Constitution: 14
Magic Power: 17
Will Power: 12
Charm: 17
Overall: 118
LP: 12

My Thoughts: Robin gets a discount on WP cost when using spears and
small swords. He gets a lot of WP. His LP makes him ideal for Wind
Magic. He's OK I guess.

                              SARAH
                         "Shinon Settler"

Where: Ellen's Sister and child of the Shishoku. You'll find her in
Pidona. If you include Sarah in your group and she is not your main
character, she will leave your party after defeating the fourth Abyss
Gate Guardian. If Sarah is your main character she will be taken away
just before starting the final battle. Sarah is the only main character
who's group has the option of fighting the final battle using Commander
Mode. All other main characters must make room for Shonen before
entering the Abyss.

Specialty: Bow

Strength: 17
Dexterity: 19
Speed: 21
Constitution: 13
Magic Power: 20
Will Power: 11
Charm: 21
Overall: 122
LP: 10

My Thoughts: she's a lot like Paul as a fighter but don't touch her if
she's not your main character. Otherwise, she's the perfect main
character.

                               SHARL
                            "Ex-Knight"

Where: when Muse gets sick (~250 HP), offer to help Sharl save her (the
second choice). While you're in the Muse's Nightmare, make sure you find
a gauntlet called the Silver Hand. When Sharl wears this, it allows him
the use of his paralyzed arm thus fixing his crappy stats. When you
complete the dream scenario you'll get to keep the Silver Hand and Sharl
will join you anytime you want. If you let Sharl do the dream by himself
or don't choose yourself to accompany him, you won't get the Silver Hand
and Sharl will be pretty much useless.

Specialty: Spear & Fire Magic

* = With the Silver Hand

Strength:  5 (21)*
Dexterity: 3 (19)
Speed: 16
Constitution: 21
Magic Power: 19
Will Power: 16
Charm: 18
Overall: 98 (130)
LP: 9

My Thoughts: Sharl has always been good to me. He's great with spears
and with the "Reviver" spell he is indispensable when fighting any boss.
His HP, WP, JP, and attack power all go very high rather quickly. He's
just super as long as he wears the "Silver Hand".

                               SHONEN
                            "Young Boy"

Where:  a boy from parts unknown who, as a child, survived the Shishoku.
You can find him in a lot of places but unless you choose Sarah as your
main character, he won't join you until after defeating all four of the
Abyss Gate Guardians. Unless you are playing as Sarah, you will have to
take Shonen with you into the Abyss. This means that if you've been
using six heroes, you will have to leave one of them behind to make room
for Shonen. If you want Shonen before then, you must either fight the
fourth Abyss Gate guardian with Sarah in your group or with five or less
characters. If you're not playing as Sarah, you might as well get him
anyway since you'll be forced to include him in your group later.

Specialty: Big Sword

Strength: 23
Dexterity: 14
Speed: 16
Constitution: 16
Magic Power: 17
Will Power: 13
Charm: 17
Overall: 116
LP: 10

My Thoughts: I don't really like to count Shonen as a usable character
since you can never use him for the whole game and never for the last
battle. I've never bothered to give him much battle time (though it
would be wise since he'll be in your group when fighting the true forms
of the Abyss Guardians) but from what I've seen he's a pretty good
fighter. Just don't rely on him for the last battle.

                                  TATYANA
                               "Runaway Girl"

Where: you'll find her in various towns. You'll know because she'll
chase you around and force her way into your party if she catches you.
She lies about her name every time you meet her so you might notice that
her name is different after reacquiring her. If Michael is your main
character, however, she won't join you because he doesn't have much
sympathy for runaways. She won't join Monica either. The only way to get
her out of your party is to go to her hometown of Librof. Tatyana must
always carry her teddy bear which slightly protects her from cold
attacks.

Specialty: Small Sword

Strength: 18
Dexterity: 16
Speed: 15
Constitution: 19
Magic Power: 17
Will Power: 13
Charm: 20
Overall: 118
LP: 10

My Thoughts: Tatyana tends to learn techs fast but masters them slowly.
Her attack power has always remained low when I've used her and her WP
only grows moderately. She's a cutey, though. You may want to use a
spear for her instead of small sword. I've tried it and she seems to
learn waza rather well.

                                THOMAS
                           "Shinon Settler"

Where: you'll find him in Pidona. Talk to him and leave the house and
you'll see him walk past you. Follow him. First go into the Inn. When
you come out you'll see him head towards the armor shop. Go into the
armor shop and leave and when you come back out you'll see him going
into the old part of Pidona. He'll be in one of the houses there.

Specialty: Spear

Strength: 17
Dexterity: 15
Speed: 18
Constitution: 19
Magic Power: 20
Will Power: 13
Charm: 19
Overall: 121
LP: 10

My Thoughts: Thomas looks dumb to me and if I ever want a spear user I
use Sharl or Yousei instead. He's not too shabby as a fighter, though. I
don't really know how his business venture turns out but maybe there's
some reason to use him in that.

                            TIBERIUS
                        "Prime Minister"

Where: you'll find him in the Tower of the Divine King. After curing
Muse of her sickness, go see Maximus with Herman/Black in your group.
Chase after Maximus through his hideout and when you come out, talk to
the townspeople and they'll say something to the effect of "He went that
way." Go to the Pidona shipdock and the sailor there will suggest you go
to Librof. So now sail to Librof and some people there will tell you
where to find the Naj Desert and after you pass through the Naj Desert
(go left) you'll find yourself at the Tower of the Divine King. Talk to
the fat man standing just off the path and he'll give you the Mouden
disguise to sneak into the tower. If, however, you have Harid in your
group, you will have to pay a $10,000 bribe to the door guard since
Harid absolutely refuses to wear the disguise (his ancestors were killed
by people wearing those same robes). Inside you will find Tiberius. If
you want him, make sure you have enough space in your group when he asks
to join you because I don't think he'll offer to join again if you don't
take him along to defend the tower.

Specialty: Staff & Sun Magic

Strength: 14
Dexterity: 13
Speed: 14
Constitution: 15
Magic Power: 23
Will Power: 20
Charm: 14
Overall: 113
LP: 8

My Thoughts: he's definitely not a good fighter. He's actually a pretty
good healer since he uses staffs and Sun and Water Magic. I usually dump
his Water Magic for Fire Magic so that he can heal and use "Reviver".
He's not totally useless as a fighter if you give him a "Sword Staff"
and learn its built-in techs. But then, you can only use them once per
battle.

                                UNDINE
                           "Water Magician"

Where: she is in North Moses. She'll pay you 2000 aurums to assassinate
Volcano, her rival in South Moses. Go to South Moses and Volcano will
pay you another 2000 aurums to assassinate Undine. Take their money and
talk to everybody in the Pub and then go into the Well of the Dead
(don't forget to find the Devil King's Shield while you're down there)
which is between the two towns. When you come back out, Undine and
Volcano, realizing they've been double-crossed, bamboozled, two-timed,
four-flushed, hoodwinked, hanky-panked, flim-flammed, hocus-pocused,
razzle-dazzled, and snow jobed, will both attack you. After you beat 'em
up, talk to Undine and she will offer to join you.

Specialty: Water Magic

Strength: 10
Dexterity: 20
Speed: 16
Constitution: 15
Magic Power: 24
Will Power: 17
Charm: 13
Overall: 115
LP: 7

My Thoughts: she's great with Water Magic but terrible with physical
combat. You might give her Moon Magic so that she can act twice with
"Shadow Servant". Like Boston, she is useless against inorganic matter.

                                WARD
                             "Norseman"

Where: a flashy dressed dude who takes you on a mission to kill a big
fish. You'll find him in Justerm. Harid has a difficult time getting
Ward. When he asks you to help him, say you'll do it for free (ugh,
can't remember which option it is, sorry) Kupocorey says that if you
agree to take the $5000 from the Vanguard Mayor (Harid is greedy and
will ask for it immediately) then Ward will not take you fish hunting.
If he doesn't take you fish hunting then the Aurora Borialis and thus
Snow Town will never appear.

Specialty: Big Sword

Strength: 22
Dexterity: 16
Speed: 10
Constitution: 23
Magic Power: 12
Will Power: 18
Charm: 13
Overall: 114
LP: 15

My Thoughts: Ward gets very high HP, WP, and attack power but he's
terribly slow. Because of this, it's difficult for him to use the
"Frozen Sword" effectively. But also because of this he's the perfect
candidate for wearing suits. He's also the only character in a non-
Katerina game who specializes in big swords (not counting Shonen).
Similar to Zo in some ways.

                               YAN FAN
                               "Shogun"

Where: you'll find him at Xuan Castle. If you meet him and have only 4
characters then he will temporarally join you. After you have defeated
the 4 Abyss Gate guardians and acquired the Demon King's Armor, talk to
Yan Fan and then go to Xuan Castle and take a look at the soldiers
walking around. Return and either talk to Yan Fan and choose the second
and then the first option.

Specialty: Moon Magic and Staff?

Strength: 10
Dexterity: 15
Speed: 21
Constitution: 10
Magic Power: 23
Will Power: 21
Charm: 19
Overall: 119
LP: 12

My Thoughts: Yan Fan is excellent with Moon Magic. You can make up for
his crumby attack power if you give him two Sword Staffs and use their
built-in techs along with "Shadow Servant". He's similar to Tiberius but
faster.

                               YOUSEI
                               "Fairy"

Where: when your Max HP gets high enough, every once in awhile when
passing through a town you'll see a big wooden sign. This means that the
travelling freak show is in town. Follow the sign and pay 10 aurums and
check out the freak show. When you're done go sleep at the inn of that
same town. You'll wake up at night and be asked if you want to
investigate the freak show some more. Do it. Go to the Middle tent and
let the fairy out. Now go to Great Arch and talk to the boatman. Ask him
to take you to Ake (the second choice). Go through Ake and into the
jungle until you find the big tree and climb up it into the Fairies'
Village. Find the fairy you set free and she'll give you a task (I think
she wants you to find the castle of Fire Abyss Gate Guardian which is
somewhere in the jungle). After you've done this, she should join you.
Fairy is immune to earthquake-type attacks, is weak against anti-air
attacks, and must always wear her Flower Scarf.

Specialty: Spear & Bow

Strength: 21
Dexterity: 22
Speed: 25
Constitution: 10
Magic Power: 12
Will Power: 11
Charm: 20
Overall: 121
LP: 7

My Thoughts: a very effective fighter. Yousei is great to have around
when you want to kill enemies before they can attack you. However she's
awful to have around against "Mantis Lords", "Asuras" and sword-toting
skeletons. She's one of three characters who specialize in bows and who
can also fight in the last battle. I find myself using her a lot because
she seems to learn bow and spear tech so easily.

                             YUKI DHARUMA
                              "Snowman"

Where: if you've gone fish hunting with Ward and your HP is 350 or
above, talk to Annie in the top right house in Lance and ask her about
the Aurora Borealis (it's the second choice up from the bottom) and then
go out and take a look at your map of the world. Watch the pretty stars
go by and when night comes, you should see some swirling lights. Go back
to your close-up map and there should be a path that leads to Snow Town.
If you have less than 6 heroes (I think), one of the snowmen in Snow
Town will talk to you and offer to join you. However, if you want to
take him outside Snow Town, you'll have to get the Forever-Frozen
Crystal from Ice Galaxy and he'll have to wear it permanently. Yuki
Dharuma is extremely resistant to heat attacks. Like Boston, you can't
dump his Water Magic.

Specialty: Water Magic

Strength: 11
Dexterity: 17
Speed: 8
Constitution: 24
Magic Power: 14
Will Power: 23
Charm: 18
Overall: 115
LP: 8

My Thoughts: he's really weak but he is nearly impervious to heat
attacks and he gets a lot of JP. In certain battles, he works great in
the Desert Lance formation to buffer attacks. He's funny looking, too. A
couple of people have pointed out that if you're fighting the Fire Abyss
Guardian with Yuki Dharuma and everyone else dies, he will sacrifice his
life (permanently) and kill the Guardian for you.

                                 ZHI LING
                              "Mungese Girl"

Where: she will join you at the Village of Mungs

Specialty: Bow (also seems to learn Martial Arts techs easily)

Strength: 14
Dexterity: 24
Speed: 15
Constitution: 18
Magic Power: 10
Will Power: 20
Charm: 16
Overall: 117
LP: 12

My Thoughts: a decent bow user. She might also specialize in Martial
Arts but I'm not sure. She learns techs easily but masters them slowly
when I use her. What else can I say, you can't go wrong with a bow user.

                                  ZO
                              "Elephant"

Where: a big blue elephant man. After you have helped the Nefuts and
defeated the Devil King's Shadow, someone in the Village of Mungs will
reveal the location of the town of Rashkuta. If you have Sarah or Shonen
in your party, go here and Zo will offer to join you after you have
talked to his brother in the room behind him. Zo must always wear his
Sloth Shirt.

Specialty: Martial Arts?

Strength: 19
Dexterity: 14
Speed: 7
Constitution: 26
Magic Power: 18
Will Power: 20
Charm: 13
Overall: 117
LP: 36

My Thoughts: I'm not sure what Zo's specialty is but I'm told it's
Martial Arts and I've seen him learn some good sword techs. His high LP
makes him absolutely perfect for Wind Magic. He is the slowest but, like
Ward, this makes him great with suits. His shirt is kinda weak but
having him wear a good suit should make up for that. Kupocorey says
that, unlike other characters, if Zo is using a 2-handed weapon i.e.
bow, big sword, spear, or possibly an axe, he can still block attacks
with a big shield. I think Zo is also immune to the enemy attack called
"Pheromone".

You might try some of these just for fun. There are only five characters
listed for each group because of the Shonen thing. Sarah's group is the
exception.

III                          Tips for Learning Techs
                                  (Asellus)
========================================================================

Whoever designed the system for learning new techniques in the SaGa
series must be sitting at home laughing right now. But believe it or not
there is a system to learning them. Here are some tips and situations
which should increase your chances of learning new waza:

1) Fighting an enemy which is much stronger than you. The more likely
you are to die, the better. Remember, there are only a handful of
battles you can't run from so when you learn something, run and save.
This is the most important situation to get yourself into. None of
the other situations below will work too well if you're not getting
or are about to get your butt kicked.

2) Monsters seem to have a threshold for techniques which can be learned
on them. So even though your guys may be dying left and right while
you're fighting, say, a red dragon, odds are still very slim that
you'll be able to learn any of the very most powerful techs while
  fighting it.

3) Don't expect to learn a really powerful waza before any of the weaker
ones. For the most part, you learn your techs in order of increasing
  strength.

4) Getting the first hit. Speedy characters such as Yousei, Katerina,
Leonid, and the two Robins seem to do well at this. This is still not
the most reliable way for learning techs, though.

5) Get yourself into critical condition (hero is injured, kneeling, and
  looks really sad).

6) Getting hit. Oftentimes you'll learn a new tech just after you take a
powerful hit. It doesn't necessarily have to be a physical attack but
can also be after a magic or status affecting attack.

========================================================================

IV                          Difficult Techs
                                (DSP)
========================================================================

When trying to learn new waza it's important to know that there are
basically two types of techs:

1) Those that you learn from not using any techniques--just plain
  attacks

2) Those techniques which can only be learned from using a certain other
technique.

Most techniques fall into the first category but most of the more
powerful waza fall into the second category. A few techniques can be
learned either way. Those in category 2 are extremely difficult to learn
unless you know for sure which technique to use. Also, if you're really
having trouble learning one of these particular techs it may be because
you are missing some of the weaker ones. It may be easier to try to
learn these when they are the only ones you have left to learn. Just
because you know that you can learn "Sword Flash" from using "Sweep
Down" doesn't mean you'll learn it right away. It also helps to attempt
to learn these with a hero who specializes in that weapon. Generally, if
I want some good techs for a certain weapon, I go round up all the
characters that specialize in that weapon and have them use the same
attack until they learn it and master it. So here is a list of the waza
that can't be learned through normal attacks:

========================================================================

                            Sword Techs:

Sweep Down (WP: 0) >>>  Sword Flash (WP: 9)

                          Big Sword Techs:

Sweep Draw (WP: 3) >>> Headwind (WP: 7)

Ground Surge (WP: 4) >>> Harvest Moon (WP: 9)

Air Throw (WP: 1) >>> Meteor Kick (WP: 8)

Tankei (WP: 4) >>> Evil Smash (WP: 6)

Train Energy Fist (WP: 7) >>> Tiger Break (WP: 12)

========================================================================

V                          Weapon Specific Techs
                               (Leonard)
========================================================================

There are some techs which are weapon specific or built-in to a certain
weapon. Of all the techs in the game, these are definitely the most
difficult to find. First of all, you can't tell which weapons have
built-in techs until you discover them. Second of all is that with so
many weapons in the game you rarely stick with a weapon long enough to
discover it's hidden properties let alone even find it. And lastly, some
built-in techs can only be learned if you use a certain tech. Figuring
out which tech that is can be a pain unless someone tells you. Those
weapons with a * next to them are rare weapons dropped by certain
enemies. (see the "Rare Items" section toward the end for more info on
these) All the rest can be found somewhere in a treasure box or made by
your blacksmiths.

IX                              Q & A
                             (Hamilton)
========================================================================

Q: How do I:

      a) get Herman to join me?
      b) get into the Tower of the Divine King?
      c) get the Masquerade

A: Ah, the 3 most frequently asked questions I get and the answers are
  all related. Okay.

      a) read about Herman in the "Characters" section
      b) read about Tiberius in the "Characters" section
      c) Kill Maximus in the Tower of the Divine King.

Q: I told the Blacksmiths to make something but they won't do it. What
  gives?

A: Sometimes the Blacksmiths need a specific item to make something. So
if you talk to them and they won't make you anything it's because you
don't have that item with you. They'll tell you what it is that they
need so if you can spot the name of the item in the Japanese text
then you can figure out if you already have the item in storage or
  not.

Q: I've looked all over but I can't find the item the Blacksmiths want.
  Where is it?

A: Most of the items the Blacksmiths need can be found in the regular
course of the game. There are a few, however, that are randomly
dropped by certain enemies later in the game. Keep your eyes open for
Dragon Panzer (serpents), Berserker (insects), and Gryphons (flying
beasts). Keep in mind that there will be one item that the
Blacksmiths can't make for you (a bow or a ring) and it's up to you
  to decide which it is.

Q: Where are some good places to gain levels?

A: 1) The stationary gargoyle in the Ruins of Cave Temple will
eventually yield battles with an Asura. If you complete the cave
though, all the enemies will disappear so don't do that unless you
don't care to learn all the techs. However you have to be kinda
tough to get them to appear (HP 700) so you might instead try
fighting in Leonid's Castle or Island of the Farthest.

  2) There are these really mean monsters called "Poison Gian" in
Leonid's   Castle. If you're strong enough (which in this case
doesn't have to be much) they'll appear if you fight the
stationary zombie-type beasts.  There are two of them. They have
no legs and each guards a treasure chest. The monster you actually
fight looks like it's biting the ground. Though this monster isn't
the best for learning techs, I'd say it's one of the easiest to
     find so early.

  3) Also, if you're using Harid you can go to the Capital of Kings
where you can fight as many Asura's as you want, provided you are
strong enough. Again, just look for the stationary gargoyle.

  4) Early in the game you can fight the stationary Red Dragon or Giant
in the Earth Abyss. Just run away and save when you learn a tech.
I'd recommend the Giant if you have a Big Sword User because you
can use "Barehand Catch" and swipe as many Triple Swords as you
     want.

  5) Go into the cave at Island of the Farthest (with all the lobster
people) and in the large room just before the room with the
treasures, there should be a bunch of pirhannas swimming around.
There is a single nautilus among them. If you attack it, there's
a good chance it'll be a Turtle Dragon. They're mean but you
can learn almost any tech from fighting them. They sometimes drop
Glimmer Shields too. Try using instant kill waza, paralyze
waza, the Mirror of Moon Reading spell, or X-Zone Chop on them.

Q: What are the best attacks?

A: Splitting Image (7 WP sword), Continuos Shot (7 WP bow), and
Yo-Yo (5 WP axe) are probably the best techs because their damage
increases with your weapon skill, they're cheap, and because they
randomly do critical damage quite often sometimes as much as 5000.
There is a staff tech called Draw-Slash-Return (7 WP) which does
exceptional damage but can only be used once per battle. Million
Dollar is a bow tech (10 WP) which is the best for damaging multiple
enemies as it does about 3000 to all if you're good with a bow. Round
Slicer (7 WP spear) is also a very powerful waza but it's next to
impossible to find a Dragon's Smaug.

Q: Am I missing some group attacks?

A: Check the Battle Formation Guide at www.gamefaqs.com

Q: How does that little crown next to my WP or JP work?

A: Well ah, I'm not quite sure. I've seen weird things happen with it.
Here's what I do know about it:

1) it decreases your WP or JP consumption by 1.

2) if you're wearing the Devil King's Armor, Axe, or Shield your WP and
JP consumption will be doubled. But if you have a crown next to your
WP or JP then everything will cost 2 WP/JP less. Here's an example:
You're wearing the Devil King's Axe and you want to use "Deadly
Spin" so it's going to cost you double which is 20 WP. But since you
have a crown next to your WP it'll cost 18 WP instead.

3) if a character gains their first 45 WP without buying magic then
they'll get a crown next to their WP. If a character gains their
first 45 JP without using any weapons or martial arts then they'll
get a crown next to their JP.

4) a character will lose their WP crown if they gain 5 JP in a row
without gaining any WP. A character's JP crown will be lost if they
gain 5 WP in a row without gaining any JP.

5) if you don't get a crown after getting 45 WP/JP because you bought
magic or because you gained too much WP without gaining enough JP to
match, you can still get a crown if you concentrate on weapons or
magic but the crown will not come until much later.

Q: How does the Silver Hand work?

A: put it on and don't wear a shield. Put on a staff, too. If you choose
to attack with a regular sword/staff/axe/fist then your character
will pop the enemy with the staff before attacking with the weapon
you chose. It adds a little extra oomph to your attack. It's possible
that the two weapons you want the character to attack with will need
to be next to each other when equipped. Maybe.

Q: I used a spell on a character but nothing happened. That's not cool.

A: You're wearing either the Devil King's Axe, Armor, or Shield. Any
magic other than healing that you try to use on yourself will miss if
  you wear these.

Q: I used heal on a character but nothing happened and when they died I
couldn't bring them back to life until the battle was over. Makes me
  mad!

A: Your character is wearing either the Bow of Death or the Ring of
Death. You can't be healed when you equip these. It might help if you
also put on an item with regenerative properties then you'll get
about 1/10 of your max HP back every round.

Q: Where are the items I need to get from monsters for my blacksmiths?

A:
Reinforced Armor----"Berserker"
Tiny Feather--------"Gryphon"
Hydra Pelt----------"Dragon Panzer"

                          Secret Bow Waza

There is one tech that doesn't really fit into any category. It's a Bow
tech called "Inner-eye Random Arrow" (18 WP). If a character has the
status ailment of "Blind" and attempts to use "Random Arrow" (2 WP) then
instead they will use "Inner-eye Random Arrow" which has a 100% Hit Rate
and is rather expensive.

                        Keep the Dream Jewel

While in Muse's nightmare, give the "Dream Jewel" to Sharl and then
bring his LP down to zero. Finish the dream and when you wake up, Sharl
will be alive and will also have the "Dream Jewel" in his inventory.

                       9999 Damage to Dragons

Here's a way you can do quite a bit of damage (9999) to dragon-type
enemies: equip the Frozen Sword, Flame Mantle (Fire Guardian drops
this), or cast "Self-Burning". Also equip one of those magic attack
scrolls that you probably just throw away. When you get into battle
choose to attack with the scroll and if the enemy physically attacks you
before you move then SOCKO! Only works on dragon-type enemies though.

                       Get 2 Seven Star Swords

This is neat. First, make sure you have the Seven Star Sword and you
have NOT learned its built-in tech, Starburst. Second, you must have
Harid in your group. Third, get into the "Tiger Cave" formation and
place Harid like so:

*
 Harid
 *
 *
*

Equip the Seven Star Sword in Harid's second weapon slot and remove any
other weapons he has. Fight in Commander Mode and have your characters
fight using Concentrate (to choose Concentrate push Y-button when you
get into battle and choose the first option). When Harid eventually
learns Starburst, another Seven Star Sword will appear in his scimitar
weapon slot (if not, reset and try again). It will have an attack power
of 60 but if you remove it, then its attack power will go back to 35. Oh
and don't use "Star Stream" with your new Seven Star Sword or it'll go
back to normal.

                              Auto Level Up

In the Crystal Ruins there is a room with some slimes that multiply. If
you have a rapid fire controller, it's possible to leave your party to
fight overnight and when you come back, your party's strength will have
increased considerably. (check Town/Place Reference at the beginning of
this guide to find out where the Crystal Ruins are)

                             Barehand Catch

Apparently, you can use the Big Sword waza "Barehand Catch" (7 WP) to
increase your chances of stealing an enemy's weapon. If they attack you
and the waza works, there's a chance that you'll swipe the enemies
weapon (provided it's a weapon you can swipe) and smack them with it.
You think you can use it to swipe just about any of the rare weapons
except for the Dragon's Smaug and any bows. Try swiping the Giant's
Triple Sword in the Earth Abyss. One thing though, make sure you have a
free weapon slot on your charcter or you won't steal anything.

========================================================================

Ian Kelley: Written some nice FAQs on Star Ocean and Dragon Quest games.
Probably the first person to ever help me with RS3.

Khagi: he appeared, gave me a bunch of info, and then disappeared.
      Very mysterious.

Yoshi Otani: Nice guy. One day, he just e-mailed me and asked if I had
anything I needed translated. I wish there were more
            Yoshi's out there.

Edward Cha: A good guy to have around when you're in a translation jam.
Very helpful. I got most of my waza translations from his
           waza list:
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/2851/rs3waza.html

Kupocorey: he's pretty much the reason for the latest update. E-mailed
me some info about 6 months ago and I just now included it.
          Sorry about the wait...
