====== Pilotwings Guide v.90 ======
==== by Fist of Heaven ====
===============================
Well, here it is - a guide for the SNES-game Pilotwings. Read it, get some new
ideas, try them out, and practice. That's all there is to it! :) When this
guide was written there was only one alternative to it on GameFAQs.com, so I
think it will be of some assistance. Possibly.

1.1 Game Objective
------------------
The game's objective is to complete eight lessons, and also complete two Secret
Commands. The first four lessons is the normal mode-lessons, and the other four
is the expert mode-lessons. The first Secret Command is reached when you
complete lesson four, and thus is the key to play in expert mode. The second
Secret Command is reached when (or if :)) you complete lesson eight. When
you've completed the second Secret Command you've finished the game. Although,
there is always room for improvement. :)

= 2 The Lessons =
====================
2.1 General Description of the Lessons
--------------------------------------
The lessons consist of two or more objectives of different kind to be cleared.
Each objective will earn you 0-100 points depending on how good your
accomplishment was. To move on to the next lesson you must meet the total score
which is determined by the 'school'. In each lesson you'll be controlling at
least two different vehicles - one vehicle for each objective - and thus each
lesson consist of a minimum two objectives.
The total score is based on accuracy, angle, time, speed and ring/beem/arc. Not
all categories will be judged everytime, it's different depending on which
vehicle is controlled.

= 3 The Bonus Stages =
========================
3.1 General Description of the Bonus Stages
-------------------------------------------
There are (as far as I know) three different kinds of Bonus Stages. You reach
them by accomplish a somewhat tricky landing with either the Rocketbelt,
Hangglider or the parachute (Skydiving). With the Rocketbelt and parachute you
must land on the moving platform on each stage, and with the Hangglider you
must land on the target in the water (same target on which you normally land
with the Rocket Belt). By doing so you get the maximum of 100 points added up
with the possible score you earn on the Bonus Stage. When Skydiving, you can
ignore the rings and achieve 100 points anyway. With the Rocketbelt you have to
complete the objectives before landing, but time, speed, touching the ground
etc. will not effect the score if you manage to get to the Bonus Stage. Within
the Bonus Stages you can get an additional 50 points (even more on the
Rocketbelt Bonus Stage) and thus finish Skydiving, Rocketbelt and Hangglider
with 150 points (or more) each. Even if you get 0 bonus points, you'll still
have the 100 points from the regular stage, so it's worth the effort. In the
last couple of lessons it's almost a must to take some bonus points, or
otherwise you'll have a hard time to finish the game.
3.2 Skydiving Bonus Stage
-------------------------
You control a penguin, and the objective is to dive into a pool from a high
diving-board. The pool (sometimes more than one pool) is divided into areas
with different scores. The controls are the same as when Skydiving, but there
is no parachute this time. The stages is different depending on which course
the Bonus Stage was unlocked. On the first course's Bonus Stage there will be
one big pool, divided as the target in the Skydiving-lesson. Later on in the
Skydiving Bonus Stages there will probably be more than one pool, for example a
small one to the right of the big one. In that case you should aim for the
small pool, since the maximum score will be achieved when landing in that one.
If you want to practice for this kind of Bonus Stage, you can do a normal
Skydiving and aim for different targets - but without using the parachute! You
won't get any points ofcourse...
3.3 Rocketbelt Bonus Stage
--------------------------
In this strange Bonus Stage you control a winged man. He jumps up and down, and
the objective is to bounce on trampolines and then hit what looks like buttons
with a P on them. The buttons are placed on plattforms surrounded with water.
The trick here, is to stay calm and not rush your way. Don't press forward to
much since braking is near impossible! After hitting some of the P's you'll get
to another trampoline, after that there will be a target similar to the one in
the Skydiving Bonus Stage - that is, scoring areas separated by lines. Watch
it, though, the areas are placed in a tricky way. If you don't reach the
maximum score, you'll probably end up with 5 points, since the maximum score is
surrounded with a 5-pointer. L- & R-buttons changes the view, just like in the
Rocketbelt-stages.
3.4 Hangglider Bonus Stage
--------------------------
You're a winged man yet again. This time you must hit the A-button as fast as
you can. This will make the man flap his wings and take off. Targets with
different scores (just like before) is laid out in a long line (perhaps in
different ways depending on which stage this Bonus Stage is reached). Keep
bashing the A-button and steer him to the maximum score. The control is similar
to the Hangglider, apart from the A-button bashing.

= 4 The Secret Commands =
============================
4.1 General Description of the Secret Commands
----------------------------------------------
The Secret Commands is the final test before the Expert mode or before
finishing the game. The first Secret Command is carried out in daylight, while
the other is during the night. You'll fly helicopter on both missions, and
firing missiles on enemies.
4.2 Secret Command 1
--------------------
The objective for the first Secret Command is to rescue your instructors Tony,
Shirley and Lance. It's pretty straight forward. Shoot the enemies in your path
and land on the Heli-platform. It's possible to shoot all enemies, even the
ones hiding in the forest. Aim at the location from which the gunfire is
coming. When the crosshair is above the correct place, you'll hear a beep and
the crosshair will get a red square around it. This signals that an enemy is in
range. Shoot all enemies close to the landing-platform, or otherwise you won't
be able to land. (See 5.5 for more tips.)
4.3 Secret Command 2
--------------------
This Secret Command is almost as the first one. The only difference is that
this one is carried out during the night (that doesn't make much difference
though), and there'll be more enemies around the landing platform. Also, you
don't rescue your instructors this time, but some president or something.

= 5 Controls =
================
5.1 Light Plane:
----------------
Nose Down
|
Left --+-- Right A-button: Speed Up
| B-button: Speed Down
Nose Up
Comments:
When landing, slow down while keeping a pretty straight angle towards the
runway. A too great angle will make the plane crash, and a too small will make
you miss the runway or land to late. To achieve a high score, the angle must be
good and you must land close to the middle of the runway. If you turn to sharp
while landing, the plane will crash! Do not slow down too much before hitting
the ground, as this will make it harder to keep the angle. A too high speed
will cause the plane to bounce up from the runway. If it's windy and the wind
makes the plane go to either the left or right, steer a little against the
wind. You can also controll the plane a little when you've landed, and thus
hinder it from crashing on the sides of the runway.
5.2 Skydiving:
--------------
Lean Forward
|
Left --+-- Right A-button: Open parachute
|
Lean Backward/Flare
Comments:
Although the instructor wants you to open the parachute at 1000 feet, you can
open it at 500-600 feet instead. This will improve your time, and better time
means higher score. When trying to land on target and to high up in the air,
flare until you drop to the height you want. Be careful to flare too much
against the wind, since this will slow you down and almost stop you. If you
want to land on a moving target, try to line up with it's path and use the
flare to time the right moment to land. Flaring is the key to success! :)
5.3 Rocketbelt:
---------------
Jets Forward
| L- & R-buttons: Change View
Left --+-- Right A-button: Fast Jets
| B-button: Slow Jets
Jets Backward
Comments:
To correct too much speed sideways, turn either left or right of the target and
use the jets. This will make your path straighter. Practice the right moment to
use the jets. Practice hovering 10-15 feet above ground, as this will help you
to land on the moving target. Keep your eyes on the moving target and wait
until it's right before you and then drop down. Timing is everything.
5.4 Hangglider:
----------------
Nose Down
|
Left --+-- Right A-button: Flare/Quick Turn
|
Nose Up
Comments:
Same technique as with the parachute can be used here. Flare until the right
height and then soar down on target. Use flare to keep height a bit longer, but
remember that you'll drop in height if you flare too long. Flare when turning
results in a quick turn. You must flare when taking ground, or otherwise you'll
crash. As mentioned before, flaring is the key. :)
5.5 Helicopter
--------------
Nose Down
| L- & R-buttons: Missile
Left --+-- Right A-button: Speed Up
| B-button: Speed Down
Nose Up
Comments:
Keep an eye on the speed display and angle/rotation display. This will help you
move forward and backward as well as land. Don't have to much speed forward
when you've discovered the enemies. Slowly move forward and shoot one with a
missile, back up and aim on the next enemy. Steer to the right and left to
avoid gunfire, never hover on the same spot for to long. Keep your height when
shooting enemies. Try to make the helicopter stand still in mid-air when
landing, then slow down a bit until you see that the altitude is decreasing.
5.6 Other controls
------------------
There is also a head up display (HUD) in the game. Leftmost on the HUD is the
radar, which shows wind direction and goals. In the middle of the HUD is the
altitude displayed. Rightmost is the lesson time. Depending on which vehicle
your using there may also be an angle/rotation display and a speed display.
___________________________________________________
| | | | | |
| Wind/Radar | Ang./Rot. | Altitude | Speed | Time |
|____________|___________|__________|_______|______|
Pressing start when using the Light Plane, Rocketbelt, Hangglider or when
Skydiving, will show your position on the course. This can be useful to
determine the place for moving plattform which is outside your field of vision.

First of all, a thanks to Nintendo who made this game. It's never boring!
Second, thanks to all of you who didn't do a guide, which means I had to :)
When I searched for a Pilotwings- guide at Gamefaqs.com I found only one, and
not a very thorough at that. Thanks to Gamefaqs.com for a great selection of
guides! Last but not least, thanks to Tobias Skogdalen, who helped out in many
ways when doing this guide!
