Main Menus
==============================================================================
[EXHIBITION]
A one-game battle. You can play with your friends or test your ice hockey
skills against the CPU.
[SEASON]
Select this to play a 82-game season and complete it with best-of-7
playoff series and post-season awards ceremony.
[PRACTICE]
Improve your skills or draw up plays to run. You can also work on your
penalty shot skills here.
____
/___/ GAME MODE OPTIONS--------------------------
Skill Level: Novice (CPUs skate slow/react slowly
Intermediate (CPUs are average)
Expert (CPUs are NHL-level)
Period Length: 5/10/20 Minutes (set the length of minutes in each period
and there are 3 periods in a game). If the game goes to
overtime, it is always an extra 5 minutes period.
Goalies: Toggle to manual or automatic.
User Records: Toggle on or off. If you turn it on, your personal NHL 97
performance will go on an ongoing record.
Penalties: Turn penalties on/off or on with no offsides. Having the
penalties off will put you in a fast-paced game.
Line Changes: Turn on/off or automatic. Having it on automatic will have
your team change lines automatically before each faceoff in
a game. Having it off and your best line will be on the ice
for the whole game and never tire.
Rosters: Default or With Trades. If you have it on With Trades, team
rosters will reflect your transactions in the game.
Fighting: The option to get in some fisticuffs or not.
____
/___/ PLAYING THE GAME---------------------------
Select Team: In Exhibition mode, you can select and choose from the 26
NHL teams plus two All-Star teams.
Controller Setup: Move the controller icon under the team you want to play
as in the game.
____
/___/ SCOREBOARD MENU----------------------------
Instant Replay: This lets you replay an action and slow it down and focus
on a play or specific areas. You might have made the most
fantastic of plays and you want to replay this and be in
awe of it or you want to see a penalty that you don't agree
with.
Edit Lines: You can edit your team's lines here and give it a new look
on the ice. If you have Line Changes toggled OFF, you can
only edit your team's top line.
Change Goalies: You have the option to replace your starting goalie or play
with no goalie and put in an extra skater.
Goalie Control: There is this option at the main menu but it's also on the
scoreboard menu. You can play as a goalie manually or let
the computer do it.
Timeout: Each team is allowed to call one timeout per game. It has
very little use in a game and all it does is restore the
energy levels of skaters on both teams and that's only
if Line Changes is toggled ON.
Team Rosters: Not much to do here but to view and browse the ratings of
the players and goalies.
Coaching: A neat little feature here. You can assign different
strategies to different lines to affect the style of
gameplay.
Score Summary: Take a gander at who scored and who assisted on the goal
and the time of the goal and if it was on full strength,
power play or shorthanded.
Penalties: To view the penalties that were called during the game.
Record Holders: At the main menu, if you have User Records turned ON, you
can put in a little challenge here and break the All Time
Records.
Other Scores: This is in SEASON MODE and during the season you can view
the score of the other contests.
At the main menu, you have the option to play a regular exhibition game,
practice and full 82-game season. Select SEASON and this section will educate
you on how to get around it.

Season
==============================================================================
OFFSIDE
A play is offside when an offensive skater who is not in possession of
the puck precedes the puck across the blue line into the Attack zone.
This violation commonly occurs when 1) A pass is completed to a player
"camping" in the Attack zone, or 2) The puck handler skates into the
zone before his teammates have cleared out.
If you're in danger of committing an Offside violation, the ref appears
on the screen with a hand raised as a warning. Wait for your teammates to
circle out of the Attack zone, then move the puck across.
*Two-line pass offside violations are not called in this game.
ICING
An Icing violation is called when an attacking player on his team's side
of the center line sends the puck across the opposing team's goal line,
but not in the net, and a defensive skater is the first to touch the puck.
Icing is not called when 1) The opposing team's netminder is the first
player to touch the puck, 2) Any attacking skater is the first player to
reach the puck, or 3) The attacking team is skating short-handed due to a
penalty killing situation.
BREAKAWAY
A breakaway is recognized when the offensive player with the puck skates
past the defenders on the Attack zone creating a one-on-one situation with
the opposing goalie.
A single tone sounds to let you know when a breakaway occurs. A last ditch
effort by the defense to "take down" the puck handler from behind results
in a penalty shot.
PENALTIES
-Charging (2 minutes)
Applying a body check after you have taken more than two deliberate
strides toward your opponent.
-Cross Check (2 minutes)
Hitting your opponent with both hands on your stick and no part of
the stick on the ice.
-Fighting (5 minutes)
A fight is initiated the moment you drop your gloves.
-High Sticking (2 minutes)
Carrying your stick above shoulder level when skating toward an
opponent.
-Holding (2 minutes)
Using your hands to grab either your opponent or his stick.
-Hooking (2 minutes)
Using the blade of your stick to restrain an opponent.
-Interference (2 minutes)
Any contact with your opponent's goalie while he is in possession of
the puck and within the crease.
-Roughing (2 minutes)
A particularly ruthless Charging infraction.
-Slashing (2 minutes)
Using your stick to hit, or attempt to ht, an opposing player.
-Tripping (2 minutes)
Toppling tour opponent by means of either your stick, knee, foot, arm,
hand, or elbow.
