I dedicate this to my brothers who I played numerous seasons with in this
game. I promise to return the game soon Dan, even if you said it is not a
big rush to do so! I have since returned it, but I dunno if Dan has got any
use from it, since he likes NHL '96 so much more. Here's hoping that you
are enjoying that SNES Dan-o!
Also, for Cougar. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the
afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and
you will never be forgotten.
Also, In memory of Howler and Koonce. You two never had a good start in
your lives, but you had a good time when you spent your time at my house.
It was oh so unfortunate that you both had your already tragic lives cut
short, but I can only hope that I helped make your life a more enjoyable
experience. You too will be missed, but not forgotten.

--------------------------------Play Modes----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) This section will review what each play mode entails.
o------------o
Exhibition
o------------o
This mode allows you to play as any of the regular NHL teams. This will not
affect any season mode, and is the greatest way to have a good old two
player match-up. It also allows you to try out a team to see if they fit
your playing style.
o----------o
Practice
o----------o
This allows you to set up a specific game situation you would like to
practice. You want to try a a 5 on 3 penalty kill for extended time, then go
for it. You want to practice your scoring skills, then make the game a 4 on
3 to open the ice surface up. You want to practice penalty shots, then make
it 1 on 0 so you can practice your moves on just a goalie. You can also
create some interesting handicaps against a stronger player if two people
want to play despite skill differential.
o--------o
Season
o--------o
This is the main play mode. You choose this to enter the League Menu where
you can mark the schedule for games you would like to play, The Standings,
League Leaders, Team/Player Stats, and Play Games. All of these will make
your fantasy season seem much more realistic.
o--------o
Trades
o--------o
In this play mode, you can make trades between teams. To make a trade,
players must be of roughly equal value (a one on one trade would need about a
range of overall stats within four points of one another). You can also do
group trades, which do widen the margin of the stat range as well, but group
trades are usually too hard to balance.
o------------o
Free Agent
o------------o
Using this play mode, you can sign a player from the available talent (those
not on any team) to any team. You can only sign so many players before
roster requirements will force you to stop.
o---------o
Release
o---------o
This allows you to let a player on a teams roster to be put into the free
agent pool. You can only release so many players before roster requirements
will force you to stop.
o---------------o
Make A Player
o---------------o
This mode allows you to customize a player to your liking. You can choose
position, weight, number, and hand (they hold shoot/hold stick with), and
then you can give them skill points in the following categories:
Goalie => speed, agility, defensive awareness, puck control, stick left,
stick right, glove left, and glove right.
Skaters => speed, agility, endurance, offensive awareness, defensive
awareness, stick handling, shot power, shot accuracy, pass
accuracy, aggression, and checking.
You goal when making a player is to make a well rounded player (who performs
adequately in all aspects of the game), or make a player that specializes in
a specific area (a specialist used in only certain situations). How your
player is made should be a reflection of the type of game style you play.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------Stats And Rules Options---------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) This section will look at each option avaiable in each Play Mode to
completely personalize the style of game to best suit you.

---------------------------------Strategies---------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
6) This section will give you a few strategies to increase your chances of
winning a pile of games.
o----------------o
Goalie Control
o----------------o
Setting this to manual is really useful, especially when playing another
human. If they try to use a scoring technique (a few are listed farther
down this section), and/or they have a breakaway, you should take control of
the goalie to take away their scoring chance.
o--------------o
Quick Passes
o--------------o
This is especially useful for clearing the puck out of your own zone. This
will not give the opposition any time to adjust to your position.
o---------o
Hooking
o---------o
If your opponent is ahead of you going into your zone, hold the Y Button as
they go in, and you can slow them down, or maybe even pull them down.
o--------------o
Clearing Out
o--------------o
Whenever your opposition parks themselves in front of your net, take a
player of yours to clear them out. This lessens their chances of a rebound
goal.
o-------------------o
Flipping The Puck
o-------------------o
This is really useful on the penalty kill, but it is useful whenever you
need to dump the puck into the opponents zone. On the penalty kill, icings
are waved off, so this can really help you in killing time (thus killing the
penalty off).
o------------o
Easy Goals
o------------o
A wrap around can lead to an easy score. The best way to do it is to come
out from behind the next, and just as you turn, fire it into the opposite
corner of the net for the goal. You can also use a quick left to right to
left (or right to left to right) motion as you approach the goal head-on (or
on an angle of about 60 to 85 degrees) to cause the goalie to be out of
position. This creates an opening on the short side (near side) of the net
for you to slip the puck by for a goal.
o-----------------o
Aggressive Play
o-----------------o
By being the aggressor, you will often be able to overwhelm your opponent
into making a mistake. This will often give you a turnover in a bad spot
(for them anyway). If your opponents are ready though, it can backfire, so
fairly warned you be.
o--------------o
Line Changes
o--------------o
Keep your lines fresh, and you will be able to out manuveur your opposition
more often, and thus create more chances to score and have a faster
defensive unit out there.
o---------------o
Shot Distance
o---------------o
Try to shoot from closer in. Not only does this lessen the chance of a
blocked shot, but it also gives the Goalie less time to react to your blast.
o-----------o
Face-Offs
o-----------o
Throw the face-off back to your defencemen. This will not only get you the
puck away from your opposition, but it leaves your forwards the chance to
break for the goal with your lead-in pass.

Played this game a whole lot till I finally bought NHL '96, and then I
played that one a lot as well. For the SNES series, this one is probably
the most balanced one of the group. I highly suggest you check this one
out, and be sure to give it mention to your buddies as well. Nothing
can beat some head-to-head action, with an intensely close third period
score, with one mistake meaning the difference between victory or defeat!
Another beauty of a game style to play is for both teams to pull their
goalies at the beginning of the game, making it six skaters vs. six
skaters, with the score ending up high into the double digit range. It
becomes a puck control game with the fast decision times required, which
rewards the player who can utilize the entire ice surface effectively.
