Written by Jim McClellan(

March 6, 2003
This is a list of all the sailors at the beginning of the game. The stats listed are
for the SNES and PC versions of the game.
The hex addresses & PAR codes may change during the course of the game. Such as, the
death of a sailor (like when his ship disappears or you sink his fleet) and when you
sell or buy new ships.
This guide is best viewed in wordpad using Courier New and size 10 font. I have indexed
this guide for easier viewing. To use this index highlight the section that interests you,

3. Sailors Hex/PAR Codes
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I listed the Hex and PAR codes this way for two reasons. The first is that there are 120
sailors in the game each with 12 different stats (16 if you include Navigation and Combat
Experience). This is at least 1440 different Hex codes and 1440 different PAR codes. Not
only would this be some incredibly laborous typing, it would also be hard to read. My
second reason is that I originally intended this as a hexediting guide. The only trick to
hexediting stats in this game is knowing where a particular stat is and finding its
relationship to the other stats you wish to modify. If you want a more specific list of PAR
codes, Voltarian wrote a very good PAR guide. Read his.
Decimal to Hexadecimal Conversion Chart
0 = 0 4 = 4 8 = 8 12 = C 16 = 10
1 = 1 5 = 5 9 = 9 13 = D 17 = 11
2 = 2 6 = 6 10 = A 14 = E 18 = 12
3 = 3 7 = 7 11 = B 15 = F 19 = 13
Instructions on using this list.
Using Pilly Reis as an example we see
80. Pilly Reis 4199-41AD 7E3586??-7E359A??
80. = Every sailor on this list is found consistantly in the same place.
Pilly is the 80th sailor you'll find when you're editing savestates.
4199-41AD = 4199 is the Leadership stat. 41AD is the Skills stat.
7E3586??-7E359A?? = 7E3586?? is the Leadership stat. 7E359A?? is the Skills stat.

Every stat between Leadership and Combat Level is one greater than the one preceding it.
So if his Leadership is at 4199 then his Sailing is 419A, his Knowledge is 419B, Intuition
is 419C and his Courage is 419D. The four addresses after the one for Combat level are for
his Navigation & Combat experience which aren't really useful. Age is after those. So age
is 14 positions away from the leadership stat or using a scientific calculator set on Hex
4199 + E = 41A7. Finding the PAR codes works the same way i.e. 7E3586?? + 1 = 7E3587??
Leadership - Luck stats have a normal range of up to 100 or 64 in hex. I don't know what
effect it will have your game(if any) if you exceed 100.
I have never altered Nav. & Combat levels or age, so I don't know how high you can increase
them. Use your best judgement.
Loyalty to you refers to your mates loyalty to you and has a range of 0 - 64(Hex).
Nat. Fleet is the national fleet they sail for. There are 7 fleets(including Piracy) in the
game. Each fleet has 10 commodores which include the main characters. Every employed sailor
is given a different value ranging 00 - 45(Hex). Unemployed sailors are given a value of FF.
First mates who don't work for you are given a value of FE.
Port Loc. is the port that you can find free agents at and is given a value ranging 00 - 63(Hex).
Employed sailors are given a value of FF(I don't know why). To find which port the mate you
are searching for is at see my ( a) Ports List ) down below.
Ship is the number of the ship your mate sails on. If he doesn't captain his own ship his ship
will be your ship. Commodores for other fleets sail on ship number 01. Free agents sail on
no ship so they are given a number of 00.
Skills have a hexadecimal range between 0 and 1F. Look at the top of the guide ( 1. Skills Key )
to determine the set of skills you want and insert the hex value associated with it.
Inserting 1F will give you every skill.
Nat. Loy./ Fleet Type refer to the the nation that sailor is loyal to and what type of fleet he
will sail when he is employed by that country. The first digit has a value ranging 0 - 6 and
corresponds with the nation he is loyal to. The second digit refers to what type of fleet and
has a value of 2(merchant) or 6(battle).

4. Main Characters Misc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To change a value for a variable (such as gold) with more than one address you must note
that hex values greater than FF(255) are usually inverted.
For example;
If you wanted to give yourself 1000 gold.
First convert the number to a hexadecimal value. 1000 = 3E8
Then separate them as they would appear in a hex editor. 3E8 = 03 E8
Now reverse them. 03 E8 ~ E8 03
So, to get 1000 gold insert E8 into address 3207 and 03 into address 3208.
To give yourself 100000 gold: 100000 = 186A0 = 01 86 A0 ~ A0 86 01
*I would advise against giving yourself more than 9999 ingots or more than 50000 in Fame*

Inserting 00 will give a Nation -100 or red 100 (very hostile feelings towards you).
Inserting 64 will give a Nation 0 or neutral status (what you start at).
Inserting C8 will give a Nation 100 or good feelings toward you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Ports Codes
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not going to list all the individual codes for each and every port but I will give
you a system for finding the codes.
First, each of the investment levels have two address assigned to them.
Example; The hex addresses for Lisbon's Economy are 8A9B & 8A9C.
This means if you want to change the Economy to 1000 you have to reverse its digits.
1000 = 03 E8 ~ E8 03
So to change Lisbon's Economy to 1000 you would replace the value at 8A9B with E8 and
the value at 8A9C with 03.
Consequently, the PAR codes for Lisbon's Economy (7E7E88?? & 7E7E89??) work the same way.
The codes to change Lisbon's Economy to 1000 are 7E7E88E8 & 7E7E8903
Second, every port's address has a difference of 25(hex) between it and the next one
on the list.
Example; Take the first address for Lisbon's Economy 8A9B
add the difference + 25(hex)
and you will get first address for Sevilles' economy 8AC0
So the addresses for Seville's economy are 8AC0 & 8AC1
Third, each port has a hex value to the left of it denoting it's position on the list.
Example; London is 29 or 1D(hex) positions down from Lisbon on the list.
So if we know that the difference between addresses that is 1 position away is 25(hex)
then we can infer that difference between addresses that are 1D positions away is 1D * 25.
Algebraically speaking; B = base value L = list position D = desired value
B + (L*25) = D
So if we wanted to know the address for London's Industry we would find its list position(1D).
Multiply the position times 25. And add the result to Lisbon's Industry (8A9F).
8A9F + (1D*25) = 8A9F + 431 = 8ED0
London's Industry is at 8ED0 & 8ED1

You can have up to twenty items at one time during the game. Each of these items is
given a different hex address or offset. Initially all offsets are given a value of FF
meaning that you have no item in that offset. As you buy items in the game these values
change to one representative of the item that you acquired. When you use or sell that
item the offsets value is reset to FF. If you buy another item after that it will put
that item's value in the first offset it encounters.
Example; Say you have ten items in the game or two pages with five items each. You sell
an item on page 1. Now you have 5 items on page 1 and 4 items on page 2. The next item
you buy will not be on page 2 but in the position your first item occupied on page 1.
The items begin at the first offset on 4DB0 and at the twentieth on 4DC3.
Likewise, the PAR codes begin on 7E419D?? and end on 7E41B0??.

(*) Expiation I think means expatriotion or renouncing your character's citizenship.
Pardon would then mean regaining your citizenship. The items can be used in the game
but I don't know where you would use them (probably Cat's scenario) or what effect
they really have.
(**) Hair tonic. Each have a slightly different discription. Haven't played around with
these. Give them to Count Morie in Copenhagen and find out.
(***) Unused items. They have no function in the game that I know of.

7. Miscellaneous
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a) Tips for New Hexeditors
1. Before you alter a save state file backup your file by saving in 2 different save
states.
2. When you are changing data, note the positions of some of the values to the right of
or under the data that you changing. If you think that these values have changed
addresses after changing the data then DON'T SAVE. If your editor allows you to undo
changes then undo until you can undo no more. If can't undo then reload. But DON'T
SAVE. Playing from a corrupted save state file can be really annoying. If you're lucky
your game will just freeze up. But sometimes it will let you play for a couple of hours
before it freezes up.
3. Always check your data. For example if you wanted to change all of Joao's stats first
change only one of his stats. Save your save state file and load it up in your emulator.
If the stat has the value you expected then change the rest of his stats. A little bit
of caution will save you a from a lot of headaches.
4. Set your hexeditor so that it reads 16 addresses across or 16 bytes per row. It will
make it lot easier to find the addresses you are looking for. For example; find Rocco
leadership stat in your savestate file (3FA5). Now count 3 rows down and 2 right. Note
the position (3FD7). This is the position of Enrico's leadership stat. Subtract 3FA5
from 3FD7 and you get 32(hex) or 3 down, 2 right.

b) Tricks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Hex to PAR conversion -
This is a generic system I worked out for converting hex to PAR.
(Joao's Leadership Address) 322B
(Subtract C13) - C13
(Result) 2618
(Add 7E0000) + 7E0000
(Joao's Leadership PAR code) 7E2618??
- Get 10 new Tekoussens in 0 days -
(I found a oblique reference to this in the Topica UWNH Fan Club)
Go to Nagasaki and enter in these PAR codes 7E8CD788, 7E8CD813, 7E8CDB88, 7E8CDC13. Check
the ports Economy and Industry. They should be at 5000 each. Now go to the shipyard and
order a new ship. The shipwright will tell you that your ship will be finished in 0 days.
Exit out of the menu. Talk to the shipwright again and receive your ship!
*Caution. Be sure to turn off these codes before leaving port.*
- Carronade "The Uber Cannon" PAR Code -
(I derived this code from the Goddess Figurehead code found in Eastpolar's excellent walkthru)
This code works a lot like the Goddess Code (7E08670A). Go to ship yard and talk to the
shipwright. While you are in menu input or turn on the following PAR code 7E086708 go to
the add Guns menu. Now here's where it gets tricky. You will see that the bottom row looks
perfectly normal but the top row is just a bunch of scrambled letters. The scrambled letters
should be highlighted. If they are not then move the cursor until the scrambled letters are
highlighted. Press right once and hit accept. The description should read "You won't find
another gun like this one, with the power of a Cannon and the range of a Culverin.".
This is the Carronade.
*Warning* Both the Goddess and the Carronade codes can freeze your game. If you input the
Carronade code and go to the figurehead menu the game will freeze. Conversely, inputting the
Goddess and going to the Cannon menu will freeze your game. Having both codes turned on at the
same time will freeze your game. And, if you leave the shipwright menu with either code turned
on, the game will freeze. Finally,if you blink twice and belch loudly while inputting these codes,
a giant hamster in a pink derby will jump out of your television set and strangle you with your
own socks. Think I'm kidding? Use at your own risk.
- The Ultimate Items Codes -
O.k. if you been reading this guide and can understand it (I hope!) you can figure these codes
out yourself. However, when using PAR you must realize that when inputing a particular value
into an offset that value remains static(unchanging). I hear you saying " Yeah, yeah I know all
that. So what?". Weell, if you put in a codes for slots near the beginning of your list and you
gain another item through the course of the game, the game may try to put the new item in the
spot occupied by the PAR item. Three things can happen in this circumstance: the game will put the
item in the next available slot; the game will put the item in that slot and you can access it by
turning off that PAR code; or, the game will put the item in that slot but will corrupt it, making it
unavailable. To avoid this put the PAR items at the end of the list.
For convenience here's the PAR codes for some of the more useful items (item values on in quotes).
7E41B0"2A" = Balm
7E41AF"2B" = Lime Juice
7E41AE"23" = Tax Free Permit(P) or "24"=(S) "25"=(O) "26"=(E) "27"=(I) "28"=(H)
7E41AD"19" = Cat
7E41AC"2C" = Royal Crown, for the ladies, the most valuable gift in the game
7E41AB"4A" = Rune Blade, most versatile sword in the game (my fav)
7E41AA"4B" = Crusader Armor, best armor
