Revision 4: No real content changes, just update my contact
information. Suggestions for the FAQ would be
nice.
Revision 3: Added a translation of the introduction of the
game (just for anyone who feels like comparing).
Revision 2: Cleaned up all spelling errors. Removed a useless
entry from the monsters table. Temporarily
removed "Green Orb". While that name is known to
be incorrect I still haven't decided on a proper
translation for the real name.

I. AGREEMENT
-------------------------------------------------------------
Suggestions for improvement are quite welcome. You can
e-Mail them to me at [email protected]. I would hope
that this document does generate some input.

If you would like to use my changes list in a text hack of
Lufia & the Fortress of Doom or a fan remake of the game,
feel free. I'd appreciate it if you credited me though. If
you do use this list in something like that, e-Mail me and
let me know! I'm always interested in projects like that.

Lastly, do not redistribute this document without my
permission. Currently the only websites with permission
to house this documents are my website and GameFAQS
(located at http://www.gamefaqs.com/). If you see this
document at any other site, please e-Mail me and let me

II. WHY WRITE THIS?
-------------------------------------------------------------
A while ago I was toying with the idea of translating this
classic (my favorite RPG of all time). But I thought it best
to play through the Japanese title, Estpolis Denki, once
more to see if this was really warranted.

Let me say now Lufia & the Fortress of Doom has one of the
best English translations of ANY game I have ever seen.
Almost every single dialogue box is exactly the way I would
have written it. There were some minor name changes but to
be honest, in most all instances the made-up English name
was BETTER than the Japanese name (more meaningful while
conveying the same message). Whomever translated this game
should be hired to work on every English game release because
they are just awesome.

I honestly wouldn't change a thing about the English version
of this game. It's a masterpiece work (a shame the later
games could never come close to matching it's quality).
However for the curious I have complied a list of name
changes in the game. It is mostly complete but there's still
a chance of things missing here and there. If there's
anything you'd like to suggest that i may be missing, you

Most of these changes were done using script dumps of the
item/monster/etc lists from both the English and Japanese
games. Special thanks to Heythere for donating the English
lists for me.

IV. INTRO TRANSLATION

An island suddenly appeared in the sky.
Four gods descended upon it.
The gods were the four gods of terror, destruction, chaos,
and death.
The people on the ground feared them and called them
Four Mad Gods.
The reign of terror continued.
Soldiers gathered from around the world to resist the
Four Mad Gods.
But the power of the Four Mad Gods was absolute.
The people's last hope were four warriors,
Maxim, Selan, Guy, and Arty.
And now, the final strike has begun...

V. OTHER CHANGES
-------------------------------------------------------------
There was Nintendo of America censorship acting in several
places in this game.
- The Houses of Healing had their religious imagery removed.
Their rear wall had three crosses and the person running
them was a priest dressed in red with a cross on his
shirt. This was replaced by what appears to be a woman or
very old man in an apron.
- All the bars in the game used to sell lots and lots of
booze. The USA release replaced this with "cider". The
spoken text is still accurate however. Just replace the
word "cider" with "booze" whenever you see it :)

VI. CREDITS AND NOTES
-------------------------------------------------------------
These lists were translated off direct dumps from the game
so I know nothing at all is missing. For those who would like
to point out the dummy items in the English game, they exist
in the Japanese game was well. Sorry, you didn't get screwed
like in Final Fantasy IV :-P

Other than that this was all my work on a quick run through
the game.
