I. Introduction
One thing about KGJWR is that you can't just create a
team with the best players. The best
players all have high values, adn the only way to
trade for them is for one of your
mediocre players to get on a hot streak. Now, this
may be very hard to do, so you have a glaring
weakness in your lineup. That is what this guide is
for, how to build the best team with the
cheapest players.
The following is a lineup I was able to create during
the regular season. It is balanced, but I
was only able to get most of the players by using my
original players well, to increase their
trade value.
II. Lineup Examples
Balanced Lineup
CF Jimmy Stealth
SS Rocket O'Hara
LF Rebel Ruiz
RF Frank Liberty
3B Bull Higgins
1B Crush Feraza
DH Sluggo Steel
C Juan Ortega
2B Vinny Clayton
Explanations
Jimmy Stealth- Best lead-off hitter in game; doesn't
have much power, but can run and hit
Rocket O'Hara- Slightly slower than Stealth, but has
better power
Rebel Ruiz- The poor man's Griffey. He runs very well,
and hits for a lot of power
Frank Liberty- Probably the best hitter listed here.
Bull Higgins- Slowest man on team, but probably the
most powerful
Crush Feraza- Good contact, power, average speed
Sluggo Steel- Yet more power, occasional steals
Juan Ortega- Also hits well, and can steal the
occasional base
Vinny Clayton- Good contact hitter, runs very well,
some pop
This lineup is hard to play with, as getting runs
actually takes strategy instead of homers.
However, this lineup is extemely cheap. Don't forget
that it is extremely unbalanced, though.
Recommended for very good players only.
Speed Lineup
CF Jimmy Stealth
LF Scorch Mcfaden
2B Razor Sizemore
C Sandy Falcon (There are no fast Cs)
RF Blazer Brown
SS Pop Risley
3B Bobby Baker (There were no fast 3Bs, so I had to
find another infielder)
1B Vinny Clayton (There were no fast 1Bs)
DH Paul Comet
III. Lineup Format
General Tips for Building an Effective Team
Firstly, power is NOT the only way to win games.
Power hitters usually have ludicrously high
trade value (you have to do a lot of trades to get
one) and
poor speed (they clog the basepaths, often making an
extra out). However, there are exceptions
to this rule, because there are cheap power hitters
(Jeff Reynolds, Brooker Brooks, Jose Crushito),
and fast power hitters (obviously Griffey, then Rebel
Ruiz and Muscles Mcfee). However, these
two types of players are rare. This brings me to my
main point. It is good to have a few power
hitters in your lineup, but your lineup should mostly
consist of speedsters. Firstly, they are
extremely cheap, as they are grossly underrated in
this game and they are fast (the best ones
can bunt for hits). Oh, and also, have speed at the
bottom, to serve as an extra leadoff man.
Here is the general lineup formula:
Speedster 10
Speedster 9
Speed/Power 10
Power 10
Power 9
Speed/Power 7
Speedster 8
Speedster 8
Speedster 9
The numbers represent the quality, and here are who I
believe to be the best in those categories
Jimmy Stealth CLE: Speed 10
Blazer Brown TEX, or Rocket O'Hara ATL: Speed 9
Muscles Mcfee SF, or Rebel Ruiz CHC: Speed/Power 10
Big Magoo CHW, or Frank Liberty CLE: Power 10
Juan Ortega CLE or Bull Higgins SF: Power 9
Razor Sizemore HOU, or Sandy Falcon SF: Speed/Power: 7
Paul Comet CHW, or Vinny Clayton SEA: Speed 8
Rock Ready NYM, or Denny Rails PHI: Speed 8
Scorch Mcfaden OAK: Speed 9
IV. Bargain Players
Now, for the good players with low trade values:
1. Billy Pope COL 6
Firstly, stop laughing at his default value. Alan
Parker, the
cleanup batter for Colorado, has a default value of
59. However, Pope
has exactly the same offensive skills and slightly
better defense!
2. Razor Sizemore HOU VAL 47
This guy has ridiculous speed and above average power.
However, I suggest that you use him as
a DH, because his defense is THE WORST in the game.
3. Cutter Wells ATL 44
Killer switch-hitter who can crush the ball. Decent
defense.
4. Scorch Mcfaden OAK VAL 44
Rare must hate good baserunners. Not only can this
guy flat out run, but he can also hit
around 25 homers over a 162 game season under the
control of a good player.
5. Jimmy Stealth CLE 51
He can outrun anyone in the game. Enough said.
6. Jeff Reynolds OAK 51
There's a good chance he'll clear the bases everytime
he comes to bat.
7. Jose Crushito NYY 50
Even though he plays for the Yankees, he is still a
good player. He can hit 40+ homers a season
in the hands of an experienced player.
8. Ox Bunyon PHI 57
Catchers get absolutely no respect in this game. An
excellent left handed batter who is above
average defensively, his value should be closer to 70.
However, he runs like a catcher too.
9. Ram Donaldson CIN 54
Above average power and speed. Can be a 30/30 man in
the hands of a skilled player.
10. Pop Risley CIN 42
Good contact hitter with excellent speed and fielding
ability.
V. Bargain Lineup
Now, using the information that I have previously
stated, I will make a decent lineup.
CF Jimmy Stealth
LF Scorch Mcfaden
RF Ram Donaldson (Or Billy Pope, if you're looking for
a better all around player)
3B Cutter Wells
1B Jeff Reynolds (If AL, in NL use Jose Crushito)
DH Jose Crushito (AL Only)
C Ox Bunyon
2B Razor Sizemore
SS Pop Risley
P Whoever Your Pitcher is (NL Only)
Let me predict some numbers for the above lineup (AL
Version, just do some subsitutions for NL)
Avg/HR/RBI w/SBs
A pretty good player can put up the following numbers
using this lineup
As a reference point, I consider myself a pretty good
player
CF Stealth .350/10/60 w/ 70 SBs
LF Mcfaden .320/25/80 w/ 40 SBs
RF Donaldson .300/30/100 w/30 SBs (Or Billy Pope,
330/30/100 w/20 SBs, but better defense)
1B Reynolds .270/50/140 w/0 SBs
3B Wells .330/35/120 w/10 SBs
DH Crushito .280/40/120 w/0 SBs
C Bunyon .300/30/120 w/0 SBs
2B Sizemore .320/25/90 w/ 40 SBs
SS Risley .340/15/60 w/ 40 SBs
As you can see, cheap players are pretty good. Though
they may not be a Big Magoo or
Muscles Mcfee, they can still put up killer numbers.
VI. Conversion Guide
A few weeks ago, I started doing a lot of research on
the real life equivalents of the players
KGJWR. My research results appeared on the GameFAQs
forum. I have decided to incorporate these
into my guide. Now, let me explain why this extra
section is needed.
Since Rare did not have a MLBPA license when the made
this game, the only real player
in this game is Griffey. All of the other players are
fictional. However, many of them bear
stark resemblances to real life players. That is what
this section addresses.
Some of the stats are really messed up, and they are
loosely based around that player's best season, so
don't ask me.

VII. Conclusion
Conclusion
As you can see, I obviously favor annoying the other
team by swiping bags instead of hitting
the long ball. In my opinion, teams which can fly on
the base paths will always trump those
who swing for the fences. While in today's game it
may not be true, with cozy ballparks and
crappier pitchers, it was true when the game was at
it's best, back in the dead ball era. I hope
this lineup guide has helped you edge ever closer to
that elusive ring.
