v1.0 - [02/20/03] - Created the first version of this FAQs/Walkthrough.  This
will most likely be the final version as well.

------------------------------
     II. Introduction
------------------------------

In 1991, HyperZone was one of the earliest titles released for the Super NES.
This game resembles Space Harrier, except in this game, you take control of
a flying vehicle instead of flying person with a cannon.  There isn't really
much of a storyline to this game.  You are just a person in a red jumpsuit who
flys a laser-shooting vehicle that is used to defeat the enemies of each level.
The levels are a variety of different third-dimensional environments with a
unique set of enemies and bosses.  Although this is a relatively short game, I
still see HyperZone as a quick and fun game to play anytime.

------------------------------
       III. Controls
------------------------------

Up - Moves vehicle up
Down - Moves vehicle down
Left - Moves vehicle left
Right - Moves vehicle right
A Button - Shoots laser blasts.  Hold down to charge and release for a larger
          shot*
B Button - Brakes.  Slows the vehicle's speed.
X Button - Brakes.  Slows the vehicle's speed.
Y Button - Shoots laser blasts.  Hold down to charge and release for a larger
          shot*
L Button - Brakes.  Slows the vehicle's speed.
R Button - Shoots laser blasts.  Hold down to charge and release for a larger
          shot*
Select - Changes highlighted choice in title screen
Start - Pauses game

At the title screen, you are given the options to play using normal or reversed
controls.  This move list applies to normal controls.  The reversed controls is
just a change in direction in the Up and Down directions, with Up making the
vehicle go down, and Down making it go up.

*This applies to all vehicles except the first orange vehicle

------------------------------
IV. Basic Overview and Strategies
------------------------------

Each level is on a track surrounded by a "no fly zone" on the left and right.
If you fly across this area, you slow down and lose power.  So try to stay on
the track.  Sometimes, the track is split into separate smaller track.  If one
of the tracks has life beams (The blue lines that give you power), I suggest
to follow that track, no matter how narrow it is.

Some enemies shoot back at you, so you have to dodge their attacks.  A good
way to do this is to fly in a circular motion.  This minimizes the chance of
getting shot.  In case you are stuck on a narrow track, try flying up and
down in a timed pattern to dodge their shots.

When you ride across life beams, try slowing down before you reach it.  This
gives you more time on the beams, which means more power.  Be sure not to
slow do to a speed of 223, you will lose power when you reach that speed.

For every 30,000 points, you receive an extra life.

------------------------------
         V. Levels
------------------------------

A. Area 1 - Material Factory

 1. Vehicle - Orange, oval shaped craft that shoots green laser shots.
This is the only vehicle that does not have a charged-up
              shot.

 2. Enemies:

Board Y - Yellow square, three shots to kill
Box - Grey square, three shots to kill
C 01 - Red sphere, one shot to kill
C 04 - Green triangle, one shot to kill
C 08 - Blue diamond, one shot to kill
Ten - 4 point star, one shot to kill, purple ones shoot, orange ones
            do not shoot

 3. Level Guide - Material Factory is a colorful-tiled area.  This level is
pretty simple, with only one enemy that shoots.  Towards
the end, the track zigzags.  This part isn't too difficult,
just follow the zigzag, keeping away from the sides of the
                  track.

 4. Boss - A flying 4 winged machine that shoots from its center.  Shoot
anywhere to hit it, and dodge its shots that it shoots at you.

------------------------------

B. Area 2 - Blast Furnace

 1. Vehicle - This is the same vehicle as in Material Factory.

 2. Enemies:

Board B - Blue square, three shots to kill
Dislike - Grey and red mine, one shot to kill
Fire - These create a column of fire, fly around to dodge
Hidarma - Orange fireball, one shot to kill
Zander - Maroon boulder, one shot to kill
Zunko - Green sphere with blue center, shoots, one shot to kill

 3. Level Guide - A level surrounded by molten lava.  The first string of
Fire columns has Zunko enemies shooting, so you have to
dodge the fire as well as their shots.  The second string
of Fire columns is on a narrow track, which may be kind of
difficult.  Just stay low to follow its projected path.

 4. Boss - A fire snake that flies in circles towards and away from your
ship.  When it gets near, it will not shoot, so this is a
perfect time to shoot it.  Defeat it to advance to the next level.

------------------------------

C. Area 3 - Old Capital

 1. Vehicle - A new green and yellow vehicle.  It can now charge up to shoot
a large blue shot that does more damage.

 2. Enemies:

Board R - Red/orange square, three shots to kill
Chin - Blue machine, comes from behind, shoots, one shot to kill
Egger - Grey and black egg, one shot to kill
Kan - Red machine, shoots, one shot to kill
S Ball - Grey sphere, moves fast, one shot to kill
Ton - Green machine, comes from behind, shoots, one shot to kill

 3. Level Guide - Old Capital looks like a used industrial area.  This level
splits into smaller tracks.  Watch out for Chin and Ton
enemies from behind.  The first life beams are spread too
far apart, so do not slow down.  If it helps, do not try
to follow the track with the life beams toward the end.
It is too risky with the Chin, Ton, and Kan enemies.

 4. Boss - This boss looks like the SNES buttons.  Dodge, and shoot the
colored rings that circle around it.  Once you shoot off all four
of the rings, then you can shoot the center.  It will not shoot
back, so it is an easy victory.

------------------------------

D. Area 4 - Grass Land

 1. Vehicle - You get a large gray vehicle that shoots out 4 red shots when
charged.  The charge period is decreased slightly with this
              vehicle.

 2. Enemies:

Hooky - White ball, moves fast, one shot to kill
Mumoky - Green caterpillar creature that shoots, has 5 sections, one
               hit to destroy each section
Musha - Brown mushroom, one shot to kill
Nahoda - Sunflower-like enemy, shoots, one shot to kill
Nyock - Green bush that grows from the ground when near, one shot to
              destroy each section that grows

 3. Level Guide - Grass everywhere!  There are a lot of dead-ends in this
level.  From far away, you can notice the yellow and black
signs, so take another route.  Use a charged up shot to
                  defeat Mumoky quickly.

 4. Boss - This boss resembles a flower, with a magenta and yellow cell
surrounded by 6 surrounding 'petals'.  Shoot the surrounding
petals first, then you are able to shoot the center.  Watch out,
because the center can shoot really fast once the petals are
           gone.

------------------------------

E. Area 5 - Ripple Field

 1. Vehicle - This level gives you a thin white vehicle that shoots 4 yellow
shots when charged.  Like the previous craft, the charge period
              is decreased a little more.

 2. Enemies:

Blue Fire - Just like Blast Furnace, these create fire columns when you
get near.  These cannot be defeated, so fly around.
Chack - Green spiky ball, shoots, one shot to kill
Midarma - Like Hidarma from Blast Furnace, except blue, one shot to kill
Rarge - Pink squid creature, one shot to kill
Tetra - Blue 3-point star, one shot to kill
Yufo - Blue UFO, one shot to kill

 3. Level Guide - Ripple Field is the opposite of Blast Furnace, taking place
on water.  This level has quite a bit of fire from Chack
enemies.  The track forks into a straight path with Blue
Fire and a dead-end path free from Blue Fire.  I recommend
taking the path without Blue Fire.

 4. Boss - This is 'sequel' to the boss from Blast Furnace, with a few
changes.  This time, it is blue and flys around the top and bottom
track.  The timing of the shot is important to hitting this boss.
Again, like Blast Furnace's boss, wait till it gets near to get a
           better chance to shoot.

------------------------------

F. Area 6 - Neo Megalopolis

 1. Vehicle - The same vehicle used in Ripple Field is used once again in this
              level.

 2. Enemies:

Board G - Green square, three shots to kill
Cannon - Red version of Ton, shoots, one shot to kill
Dust Box - Green version of Box, three shots to kill
Pot - Grey oval, one shot to kill
Tank - Gold set of batteries, one shot to kill
Yokabary - Two green conductors that stretch across the track.  These
cannot be killed, so either go under or over its electric
                 path

 3. Level Guide - This area resembles Material Factory, but now looks dark and
electric.  The worst part is dodging the Yokabary's electric
attacks.  The rest of the level plays just like Material
                  Factory.

 4. Boss - Same boss as in Material Factory, but with more firing power.  Its
4 wings must be shot before you can hit the center.  Be careful
because it shoots rapidly once the wings are shot.  Use the same
strategy used to defeat the boss in Material Factory.

------------------------------

G. Area 7 - Bioplant

 1. Vehicle - A blue craft that shoots 4 blue shots when charged is used in
              this level.

 2. Enemies:

Board W - White square, three shots to kill
Oban - Red cell, shoots, one shot to kill
Pycet - Purple cell with a crack in the middle.  Do not shoot these.
These cannot be shot.  If you do shoot, it opens its eye and
              rushes toward the screen.
Womacy - Orange leech/worm creature that is split into sections.  One
shot will destroy one of its 5 sections.

 3. Level Guide - This level has pulse-lighting.  The track is split many
times to dead-ends, so try to spot these far away.
At the end, track is gone and is replaced by split
sections of life beams.  Plus many enemies shooting, this
part is difficult not to lose a life.  Try not to slow
down.  Once this part is complete, it is off to the boss.

 4. Boss - A mass of red brain-looking spheres.  It shields itself by
swirling around in place.  It can only be shot once it moves to
a different spot.  It is hard to tell if there is only one
sphere if it is moving or swirling.

------------------------------

H. Final Area - Hyper Zone

 1. Vehicle - A dark gray remake of first vehicle.  It shoots 4 green shots
when charged, making it the fastest charging vehicle in the
              game.

 2. Enemies - The enemies are bosses from previous levels:

        First, Blast Furnace boss
        Second, Old Capital boss
        Third, Grass Land boss
        Fourth, Ripple Field boss
        Fifth, Bioplant boss
        Sixth, Neo Megalopolis boss

 3. Level Guide - The track is black, with a black starry background.  It
may be difficult to see, but the track does not have any
secret surprises, so follow the shooting stars to find
the tracks width.  There are no life beams in this
level, so do not get shot.  The enemies are bosses from
previous levels, so check above to see how to defeat
                  these.

 4. Boss - An alien fetus in a shell is the final boss.  It shoots fast
blue fireballs at you, so dodge them.  After a few shots, it
rushes right in front of you and cannot be shot.  Just wait
for it to step back before shooting again.  It then surrounds
itself with blue fireballs, releasing each one toward you,
followed by a string of fireballs.  When it surrounds itself,
this is the chance to shoot.  Repeat until it explodes.
           Congratulations, you have beaten HyperZone!

------------------------------
VI. After You Have Beaten HyperZone
------------------------------

Once you beat the final boss, you are shown a list of the enemies of each
level, followed by the creators of this game.  Once the credits are done,
the HAL logo is shown with shooting stars in the background.  If you
press start, you are taken back to Area 1, this time with the final and
most powerful vehicle.  If you do decide to play the game over again with
this vehicle, you get nothing special.  This game doesn't end unless you
run out of lives or turn the game off.

         VII. FAQs
------------------------------

Q.  How do you dodge enemy fire?
A.  Check section IV: Basic Overview and Strategies for tips on dodging
   enemy fire.

Q.  Are there any secret paths across the track?
A.  No, the area away from the track only goes so far out.  Do not
bother trying to find anything, you will just lose power.

Q.  Is there anyway the first vehicle can have a charged up shot?
A.  No, you can only shoot single shots.

Q.  In Bioplant, the end is way too difficult.  How do you get past
   this?
A.  Either follow the left or right path of life beams.  Do not go
   straight.

Q.  In Neo Megalopolis, how do I dodge the electrical path of
   Yokabary enemies?
A.  I recommend staying low most of the time.  When you see a path
lower than usual, fly over it.
